We always try to plan for the unexpected, be ready, be prepared, but even with all the planning in the world, you can’t outsmart mother nature.

Toni was mad on Sunday we did not get any Easter babies, especially after seeing all of the ones everyone got on Facebook. Still no babies on Monday. I do not know what they are waiting for. The weather was all clear, but cold, on Monday, so dad was finally able to take the load of cows and the bull to Toppenish.  We had two mares down Monday that just weren’t acting right, so lots of texts with Sheena regarding what to do. The problem with horses is that they are hard. We kept them both going and kept bugging poor Sheena. We are very thankful for her as our vet.  Toni and Kade did the horse chores, and then Toni took Jaxsen to his baseball game and Kade went to help Anna with the cattle chores. Dad went and picked Kaine up from baseball practice and then took him up to help with chores. The heifers and 050 were finally going to leave on Tuesday, so Anna and the men got them in and in the corral, since Arlen was going to be there at 6 Tuesday morning. The three bulls we have left to semen check were also moved to the house for Ben to haul in on his way to work on Tuesday. The lawn mower broke down at our house, which is fairly new, so I had cousin Kendel come and mow my yard, so I did not have to rake and bale it by the time ours gets fixed.

Tuesday morning Ben and Anna loaded up the three bulls and then Arlen showed up, so they loaded the heifers and bull. Still no new foals Tuesday AM. Both mares were still off, so Toni spend another day running back and forth consulting with Sheena.  Luis texted me that the Hereford cows were out, so when Anna got home she started to get them in. Ben helped when he got there, after picking up the bulls. So Bullwinkle got pulled and the Hereford cows went out with the rest of the cows. Dad went to St John to take someone and their quilt to the historical museum, and maybe not actually to St John?? Then they went with Skip out to get Skip’s tool box that Ben bought from him.

Wednesday Reba had a dead filly by King.  Barb was still bad off as well. Still consulting with Sheena on Barb. Toni and Anna got Reba in to see if Molly B, mom’s bottle baby, would be a horse, and not a pet. Dad and mom had appts on Wednesday, so Toni, Kendel and Scarlett came down and took care of Molly B at lunch time. The biggest issue with this whole scenario is that Molly B does not thinks she is a horse, she has never nursed a horse, and she is scared of Reba. Grafting Molly B is a fail. But we were able to milk Reba and get some mare colostrum for the freezer. The men worked on the pump in circle 5, and got it set up for Isidro to weld. Next it needs to be cemented I hear.

Thursday we had some nice moisture in the form of rain. Now we just need some heat units and the grass will grow. Cousin Traci called me, Apache is at her house since we have never been able to get her bred, for the kids to ride since she had started beating up the mini stud. I told Traci, Apache has been in with the mini stud so she might foal. She never has before, but she is at your house I feel like the chances are greater. Well, she foaled, and had cute colt by Derringer. Kayla has not named him yet. Dad was taking a bull to Nespleem on Friday and a bull to Wilbur, and bringing and bull and two horses back from Wilbur, so Anna and the shags got the bulls in and sorted. Ben got home and they got the tool box out of the back of Butte, the camper moved into the yard, to get cleaned for Spokane, and the red gooseneck hooked up to go. Kaine and Kade got here, after helping Toni and I put up some fence, and helped Anna get the tack out of the trailer. Jaxsen had a baseball game Thursday night.

Friday morning Dad and Steve headed north with the bulls and brought back a bull and two horses. Toni checked the cows and mares, no new foals. We lost Barb early Friday morning to what looks like a ruptured stomach.  In hindsight, we probably should have tried to c-section the foal, but we were hoping for a good ending.  Marlo came down to do chores, and one of the horses that dad brought back was for Traci to try, so Toni, Marlo and Anna all rode her. She is a retired cutting mare, so very very broke, and very fun. Marlo, Kade, and Toni put in another section of wood fence in Stinger’s pen.

Saturday Jaxsen went with Kolton to his birthday party in Tri-Cities, so Scarlett, Kolton’s sister, came down to hang out with Anna. Anna and Kaine caught their steers and heifers and washed them. Toni checked the horses on her way to my house, and we finally had a live foal, Mil had a fancy blue roan colt by King. Toni, Ben and I got the cows in and sorted them. Then a guy from Connell showed up with his two horse trailer. So we sorted off the sale heifers and he picked one and we loaded it up in his trailer. His wife owns the Brick Store in Connell, which is a cool store that had a lot of antique items and also is kind of like a second hand store. Next we had meat buyers show up, so we loaded their car, now we are out of meat until the next two go in to get butchered. Chad showed up to trim some horses, so Anna Kaine and Scarlett took him up to trim the miniatures, Ruby (the horse Traci is trying) and Katie (Anna’s horse). Ben, Toni and I broke for lunch and them came back down to work cows after. At around 3 Toni, Chad and Kade went down to mom and dads to trim Miss Gen, our new mare from Rusanne and Dan, and went ahead and trimmed Reba since she was there. Anna, Kaine and Scarlett came down to help finish the cows. Kendel got home so Jaxsen got to help as well. After we got done, Toni and Kade had already finished chores, so I hauled two Hereford cows up to put with the bull that dad and Steve brought back from Rusanne and Dan’s house.  We worked on a little fence, teased some mares, and tried to get our normal stuff done.

Sunday we finished working the cows. Kade came down and we all went out and got the cows in. The two gray mares had foals, Butterfly and Zoey, and they are with the cows, so we pushed them out of the way of the cows. They both had big red colts, Butterfly’s looks gray for sure, but not sure on Zoey’s yet. Both have nice head markings. We were debating on which of the mares would foal first, so it is funny that they foaled on the same day. I still say mine, Butterfly, foaled first.  So we finished getting the cows and sorted off the calves. Kade washed his steers and heifers. We had Hunter and Kaden come out to look at the foals, with Hunter choosing Lura’s big fancy buckskin colt, KT Call me Magnum.  We got all of the cows and calves worked, then had 3 bulls to put in a pen for Dad to haul on Monday, and another bull left last Sunday afternoon. We are down to 1 Angus bull left to sell and 1 horned Hereford, both are semen tested and ready to go if anyone is looking.

We had planned to get more fence built to get Sagebug’s pen out, but the cows and calves needed to get worked now that the weather is finally heating up. It is always fun to mess with the calves, see which ones are tame, wild, and in-between. Jaxsen has already said he isn’t’ going to show his club calf next year.  The calf was pretty reactive in the chute. I told him to trade with one of the other kids, but none of them were very impressed with the calf either. He is actually a nice calf, so with some work I am sure he will be fine. Sometimes the clubby calves are a little different.

We always try to plan for the unexpected, be ready, be prepared, but even with all the planning in the world, you can’t outsmart mother nature. Thankfully the bad weather looks like it is behind us and we can once again focus on good spring weather. That bad weather really set the mares back and we attribute it to the bad luck we had this week. In the ranching business you have to take the good with the bad, know that there will be bad days, bad weeks, sometimes bad seasons and just keep moving forward. This wasn’t our best week, but it ended on a really good note with three strong healthy colts.

The winter of April 2022

The winter of April 2022 pretty much derailed us on all fronts. Monday dad was going to take a load of beef cows and a bull to Toppenish, however, we woke up to it snowing in April. So sometimes you have to roll with the punches, the cows were unloaded and turned out in the corral. The kids did not have school, teacher in-service day, so Anna went and checked. Piper had foaled and it was blowing and cold, so Toni and Anna got in Piper and her colt, and Twiggy and her colt, and they hauled them to the house.  I heard that it was pretty hectic. The snow was blowing so hard that it took awhile to find the horses, get them in, and get the two pair sorted off. By the time they got that done the roads weren’t great, so Toni had Anna drive her own vehicle in case things went sideways with the trailer full of horses they both weren’t in it. Toni let the kids out of fence building for Monday, due to the blizzard like conditions.

Tuesday we continued to have weird April weather, however, it was better then Monday.  Due to the Monday weather, we canceled the hauler who was hauling some heifers and a bull we sold. The weather was just too iffy. Snow fell from the sky, but did not really stick, and it rained, and the wind blew, but not as hard. It was still cold. Toni went out to check and Izzy had a cute palomino colt. Then she noticed that Voodoo had legs out, so she called Mom and Kendel for backup. That is the “C-Team” in case anyone was wondering, yet this year they have had to step up their game.  She texted me to call Sheena at Sagehill vet that she was bringing her in. She then pulled VooDoo’s filly while she waited for Mom and Kendel to bring the trailer, and then called me back to tell me to call Sheena and say we were not bringing her in. VooDoo then ran off, so Toni, Mom and Kendel loaded the little filly up in the trailer, which she could not stand up at this point, and hauled her to the house. They cleaned her up, gave her colostrum, and mom continued to feed her throughout the day. Since she could not stand up all day, Toni had to leave work and go help mom feed her, so they could stand her up and get her circulation going. By the time I got there, I went out to the trailer to look at her and she was up. I did not know that this was new, so I gave her some pets and encouraging words and went into the house. Toni and Kade were out building fence, Kaine had baseball practice and got to moms about the time I came out of the trailer. I went out to give Kade some water and said something about her being up, and Toni said she has not been able to get up by herself, I said well, she is up. So that drastically improved her chances. However, at this point she still had not had a bm, so we, Toni, mom and I gave her an enema. And about 60 seconds later she had a good bm. So I texted Sheena that she was up and had a bm and was doing better. Sheena did not know she was not on her mom, so Sheena said we should bring her in in the morning for some plasma. About this time Jake Bennett (no relation) showed up to look at the studs on his way to CA, and then went down to check on VooDoo with us. We got down there and Tank and his mares were out in the alfalfa field, so Jake also helped us fix fence and got shocked, we didn’t laugh (or did we laugh hysterically).  Tuesday was long. By the end of it we have Molly Brown (Mom named her) about a 50/50 chance at best but we were sending out positive thoughts.

Wednesday the Unsinkable Molly Brown, “Molly B,” was doing great, so dad and I loaded her in the trailer so him and mom could take her in to see Sheena. She pooped all over me so I had to go home and change on my way to work. I guess the enema did wonders. There was road construction on the end of Hendricks Rd, so I also had to wait there, but don’t worry, I made it to work on time. We had some more light snow on Wednesday, it was cold, but a little warmer than Monday and Tuesday. Dad had a dentist appointment and ended up getting some teeth pulled. Toni went and got Molly B, who seemed even more energized after the plasma. Then we had a big blue roan outside mare arrive. Of course Rick and Jaime also had to see Molly B, so they helped Toni unload her and move her back to her living quarters. Jaxsen and Kaine both had baseball practice.  Tank’s pen had been put in the corral so after chores we went down and fixed fence so they could go back out.

Thursday we had another snowstorm, so dad canceled going to Toppenish again. Which was good, it got worse down in the valley. Molly B’s vet appointment was also canceled due to the storm. However, later in the day her joints swelled,  she was lethargic, and things didn’t seem to be going well. After a consultation with Sheena, who said we had better bring her in and figure out how much money were planned to invest,  Toni ran her in and she got more plasma. Her plasma was really low. The good news was her total proteins had come up and weren’t as low, so we still had some hope.  I went down and let Tank’s pen out of the alley while Toni was at the vet. Dad took Jaxsen in to baseball and brought Kaine home and took him up to help with chores. The men had some equipment to use the hours on, the neighbor rented it but did not use all of the hours so let them use it, and so they cleaned pens and hauled dirt. I got stuck, where I had driven on Sunday and it was now was wet and muddy due to the storms (which is good we need the moisture), so Kaine came down and got me. We got home and the TV had died. Then Ben decided they were going to go back down and get my pickup out and they got his pickup stuck. So Anna went down and got them.  Toni and Molly B got home about 8 pm, but we were still not out of the woods with Molly.

Friday the morning was cold. Tank’s pen was back out. They got locked back up in the alley and got some hay. Marlo came out and helped do chores and unload groceries and fix fence. The fence was not actually down, they have started going through the circle gates.  Molly B started actually trotting and moving around a bunch more, so that was a relief. She also started having a lot of attitude which reminded us of why we hate bottle baby horses. But without that attitude she would not have persevered, because the odds were very against her, not that she was totally out of the woods, but things were looking up. We are really a fairly positive family about sickness in livestock and survival. If someone says 50/50, we think great, we have a chance, and we continue to fight for that animal.

Saturday it was rainy and cold again. Dad went and got Camas, so Camas and Kaine pulled out posts in the corn field and rolled up the section of fence that was still up.  Then they put out mineral to the cows. Anna and I got in Tanks Pen, then got in Jackpots pen, went and picked up Tanks pen in the trailer, hauled him and mares to Circle 3 and then hauled Jackpots pen to circle 6. It really started to rain after lunch, the kids went out and checked Gunners pen and made sure Jackpot was still in. I worked on pictures from Pomeroy. Ben put the tree puller on the tractor and pulled out some trees. We are have an ongoing war with Russian Olive Trees that we are determined to win. We loaded a bull up and sent him to his new home. Then we went and did chores in the rain. Yes, we need the rain. We also need some heat units with it so the grass will grow.

Happy Easter, sorry I did not have an Easter Post. We went and hunted eggs then the Meachams went to Moses Lake. Terry and Erina came down and we had ham, potatoes, vegetables and pies. Erina got to go meet Molly B with Mom during one of her feeding times. After, Anna and I went and got Izzy, Voodoo and Barb in. We put Izzy with Jackpot and hauled Barb and Voodoo to the house. Barb went in the heavy pen, she is due any day. She is bred to McBride’s champagne stallion. Then Toni and I hauled Twiggy up to Dude and Smokey Joe up to put with Slick. Kade is riding Slick every day and practicing roping. Toni may need to send him to get lessons. We are not a family that ropes, but he seems to have the bug. Toni put out mineral and I walked out to check Mil and see if she is heavy, she is also due any day.

The weather has been cold, foggy, dreary, hard to anticipate spring.

Happy Martin Luther King Day. Ben and the kids checked cows and worked at the ranch. I went to work. The Tonis came back from the class reunion. Our meat was done at Bryans, so Anna and dad ran down and got it, they brought me a coffee at work, it was very nice of them. Anna helped the men do chores, the boys helped Toni. Toni called me at work that Whiskey had a puncture on her knee and it is very swollen. Whiskey is an accident waiting to happen, if something can get injured in any way she does. We do not know what she was injured on, possibly a Russian Olive Tree? Kicked? Fell down? Toni and the boys doctored her. They let Lighting Bug out of the round pen, she has been locked in for a few months, she injured her right hind and was not supposed to move around a lot.  She has been in for months now, so is much improved. She didn’t get to go out with the big horses, but did get to go out with the weanlings- almost yearlings. Whiskey got put in her pen. Mom made us lemon bars, all of us, except Anna, love her lemon bars. Toni brought donuts back for us from the Cle Elum Bakery, they were SO good. Cousin Julie used to bring bear claws from the Cle Elum Bakery when she would come to visit, so it brought back some good memories.  We were not light on desserts Monday.

Tuesday morning we had thick fog, but it cleared out later in the day. Jaxsen and Kade had basketball practice, Isidro ran Jaxsen in and Dad ran Kade in. Toni ran Kaine home after chores, Anna was up helping do cow chores. We had some left-over lemon bars and mom made apricot cobbler on Tuesday. We were discussing Wednesday options and I told her I would like peppermint. Toni went and got Jaxsen and Toti from practice, then Kade, and they told her the rumor was the substitute bus driver ran over a stop sign.

Good thing Toni was out early to check the cows, they had knocked the fence down around the goosepit and there were calves in the goosepit. She said she was smart and strong enough to get them out on her own, but just barely. Murtaugh checked cows with her and sat on her lap when she got done to tell her what a good job she did. To continue with a great Wednesday, Whiskey’s leg did not look as good Wednesday as it did Monday. Toni gave her another exceed shot. The axle on the little flatbed trailer broke when the men were feeding, so they had to switch everything over to the big flat bed and Red. Wednesday was not the best day of the week.

Thursday was rainy. Emerald had a cute bull calf. The swelling in Whiskey’s knee had gone down and we could see that it was broken. Whiskey has been a great filly, so it was a pretty hard day overall.   Toni had been looking forward to riding her in the spring. Thursday was an emotional roller coaster, with birth and death.

Friday mom and I went in to get haircuts. The kids had a half day of school. Anna ran Eddie the cat in to get spayed, then she ran Kaine and Jaxsen down to get haircuts and her and Kade went and got Mei Lings for everyone for lunch. Friday afternoon we had a family from Prosser stop by and look at the two colts we have left for sale, they decided on Ole Son and were going to pick him up the next day. Toni had a bunch of calls so she didn’t show up until later, after chores. It was the first time I had seen Hottie’s sarcoid in a week, so I made Dad come out and look at it. I think the latest treatment is helping. Dad didn’t think so. I know Toni has been cautiously optimistic and thinks there is a bit of progress. Hottie is on an experimental feed supplement with a topical application every day. We are pretty excited to have her on a program that may have long term impacts.  AND we can’t say enough great things about StableFeed- Mary has been absolutely amazing to work with on this project.  Mary is great about shipping products, so don’t be afraid to check out their website- https://stablefeed.com/

Saturday first thing we checked, and then Frecked Son, aka Ol Son, went to his new home in Prosser. Ben and Kaine worked on the old valley fence, and then Anna and I went up and finished it. Next, we brought the heifers up from circle 7 to get yearling weights on and then move up to the old valley. The Meachams were at basketball all day in Tri Cities, Kade and Jaxsen both had AAU games for the Tri-Cites AAU season. I think Toni is wondering why they are doing AAU again. Both boys had a good game overall.

Sunday Toni came down and the kids, Toni and I got yearling weights and then ran them up to the old valley.  It was great to get another look at these coming yearlings. We only sorted out two for the feeder pen. We can’t say enough good things about this group of heifers other than wow. It has been really hard to select what we are keeping and what we are going to market as replacement females. Every time we look at them we start to second guess ourselves. These heifers are fancy.  We can’t keep them all, so we know we have to sell some, but it would be great if we could strike it rich, buy an additional ranch and just keep them! Ben made lunch for us all to celebrate my birthday, he made bacon wrapped shrimp, meat balls and Dutch oven potatoes. Mom made rolls and three different desserts. Then we hauled the heifers that had just calved up to the Old Valley and the 2 Oreos.  For those of you that don’t know, I got a belted Galloway for my birthday last year that is named Oreo. We kept her at mom and dad’s last year so she wouldn’t get bred with a summer Angus, so Mom started calling them Oreo and chocolate Oreo, now they are collectively referred to as the Oreos. They are also collectively a pain in the butt. They do not like to be herded by vehicles, people, horses, basically they are terrible. And then the other heifers follow them and things go badly, there is cussing. So to save everyone drama and so I don’t have to listen to everyone tell me how I have to sell Oreo, we just hauled her and chocolate oreo up to the new pen. Way easier. And the fat buggers probably liked it better.

I had a great birthday. Thanks for everyone for the well wishes. Of course, my family treated me great, lots of fun, presents, great food.  Probably too much food. Uncle Skip and Marlo came over. The best part about a birthday party is knowing you have lots of people that love you and want the best for you.

The weather has been cold, foggy, dreary, hard to anticipate spring. I am unsure why we are getting so many calls on breedings but we are. Maybe because people don’t want to be outside, so they are in front of their computers looking at studs? We will be standing King and Tank to the public. Per our normal procedure, we do limit outside breedings to approximately 10 mares.  Pasture breed only. If you want to be on the 2022 list, please let us know soon. We are excited for breeding to start, but this weather needs to get better.

King and Tank are still with Jordan getting ridden.

November: the last month of autumn, but the beginning of new adventures.

Monday morning bright and early Rog headed to TX, the shipper called Sunday and wanted to pick her up, but we asked her to wait because we were still at the show on Sunday. Rog loaded up a ramp into side load trailer like a pro and headed to TX. The shipper was on time which a lot of them are not. Rog has been a mini me of Leroy, and game for just about anything. We are really going to miss her. Her not brother that had been living with her, since he is headed to Oklahoma any day, was also sad to see her go. Poor Gen again aka Fat Buddy. We brought Ram, one of Fat Buddy’s other “brothers” in to get halter broke and be Fatty’s friend for a week. Kaine and Anna cleaned all of the tack out of the trailer Monday night and cleaned out the barn. Kade had basketball after school. Jaxsen had basketball practice, Toni took him.  Dad went to Lewiston to get some oats. Ben and Toni unloaded them then did chores. Ben and Kicker fed the cows and checked duck ponds.

Tuesday, what happened Tuesday?  Well Dad still had my pick-up from taking it to Lewiston for oats. So he decided to drive it around while he had it. Toni thought that was pretty funny so took a picture and sent it to me, so she ratted him out.  Lightning Bug somehow got super lame on her back leg, could be in her hip, unclear. There is nothing we can see. So she is in the roundpen getting care, and under close watch. Ram and Fatty are still getting worked on. Ram got tied up for the first time and did great. Ram is out of Sagebug and Reba, a Colonel daughter. We were very upset when he was born because he is a colt not a filly. We would have kept him too if he had been a filly. He is amazing minded and has a really cool dun roan color. Toni was feeling a bit ill, so she hasn’t been making us build fence, so that is nice.

Wednesday Coco rolled in from CA. She is going to take her mare, Money, and her foal, Penny, back to CA. Coco is pregnant with a little girl, so Toni spent most of Tuesday trying to convince Coco to name her guardian if her and Jake both die.  Toni would also like the baby to be born with red hair.  Ram and Fat Buddy got some exposure to Coco to help with any stranger danger they might have. Fatty has none, but it is still good for him to be exposed to new people.   Anna and Kaine got home and set up the giant dog crate to haul the mini down to Andee. We got packed to go and packed up the pickup.

Thursday was Veterans Day. We live in the greatest country in the world. Thank you, Veterans, for all you’re doing to help keep it that way!  Ben, Anna, Kaine and I drove to SE Idaho to spend the weekend with the Geddes family. We had a great time hanging out and playing card games. It was great seeing everyone.  Katie and Alvina came out to pick out Alvina’s new project foal. They were between Blue Starlight and Memphis. Memphis really took to Alvina so she made the choice easy. We are really excited for Alvina to have a Leroy foal out of a Double daughter, under Katie’s supervision.  We were all hoping Alvina would love Memphis. Toni showed Memphis’ granddam, Porche, for many years doing anything and everything with her, so we are hopeful that this will be a good fit. Marlo came out to house sit and help with chores. We are in one of our busier times because all of the livestock needs to be fed as we are out of pasture, so it takes all of us to get chores done each night. Marlo helped Toni, so Fat Buddy and Ram got more exposure to strangers. Marlo helped lead them and work on them. Fat Buddy has to wear a fly mask when he goes with his shipper, so that came in the mail and they worked on getting him used to the mask. It wasn’t big enough, but luckily mom could add some velcro to make it fit, so all was not lost.  Toni and Kicker fed the cows in the dark, in the mud, so I am sure that was fun.

Toni is filling in the rest since I have no idea what happened. Yea, I have a great post going here. Toni, Leslie, and Dad went to the WCA convention early Friday morning. Toni was speaking at the Washington Cattlewomen’s annual meeting and had to host her meeting with co-committee chair, Nancy Belsby, for Water and Ecology.  There was a really good turnout and lots of good discussion on issues with DOE, water, Wotus, and various other subjects.  Mom called when they were at the convention and said the horses were out, so they headed home. Marlo and Coco helped get the horses in and fix the fence. This is the same fence we are working on replacing, so that just made Toni want to get back to fencing. Chores were the same, work on horses, feed horses, check everything, feed cattle, check water, look for anything sick, injured, lame (cows and horses). Kicker had to check duck ponds for the hunters.

Saturday Kicker and Kade went bird hunting, after feeding in the morning that is. They got home in time to go with Toni and Jaxsen to Jax’s basketball tournament. Kick and Kade stayed for one game then went out passed Moses Lake to get some equipment Kicker had bought in an auction. Jax had a great couple of games and his team finally had their first win. To celebrate Toni and Jax went to DQ and got blizzards on their way home.  Once home, everyone went separate ways to get chores done in an effort to try to beat the darkness.  Toni and Kade fed the mares in the corral in hopes that they could get them in easier on Sunday.  Then off to regular chores.

Sunday Kick and Kade went hunting again. Toni and Jax went down to load Ram out for his move to Klamath Falls. The wind started howling about 3 am Sunday morning. Ram was perfect. The buyers had trouble with their normal trailer so brought a 2 horse with a small door to get into, but Ram took his time, and eventually loaded allowing his new owners to hit the road.  Toni went and pushed Frank in, haltered him, dewormed him, worked on him for 10 seconds, then led him across the drive-way so he could live with Fat Buddy and get halter broke.  Frank is out of Rosie and Double and just a wonderful colt.  He is going to move to California in December with his new owner.  Then she caught Abs, and her and dad moved Abs into the old mare pen, and moved Rosie and Blackie back out into the big pasture. After lunch, Toni, Coco, Kade, and Jaxsen went and got the whole broodmare herd in, sorted, dewormed those that were staying down there, sorted out the pairs that were down there, hauled all the pairs home, hauled Jag home, weaned 2 foals, moved Money and Penny, dewormed the stuff that came home, turned mares out, moved 2 mares back out to the broodmare band, then started chores.  Toni was headed home to start dinner about the time we got home from Idaho. It was dark. It gets dark so early it is hard to get enough done during the day. We came back to massive winds that will dry out the mud and make life a bit easier. But man the wind is bad when it is howling. Gusts up to 50 mph the weatherman said.  Luckily our drive home from Idaho went well.

We are always busy on the ranch, but making time for family is a priority. I am glad we got to go see Ben’s family. The kids all are growing like weeds so they are really changing between visits.  Just like the calves and the horses, you don’t see them for a week or a few days and they really change.  We are down to our last couple of colts for sale, Blue Starlight, the last Colonel colt, and Ima Freckled Son- this colt is unregistered and will not be able to be registered with the AQHA. Both are nice colts and ready to go if anyone is looking for a foal. We also have a couple of fillies with prices on them that we don’t really want to sell. But they have a price if you have to have them. Also, we have our annual calendars for 2022 for $25.

I am not going to jinx it by saying how well it is going, so I didn’t say it.

Monday was a beautiful October day. Toni loaded out Dual Again and Nevada first thing, and they headed to Olympia. Mom and dad went to Ellensburg in Toni’s Tahoe to get a recliner that Toni bought in a benefit auction for horse therapy. Marly was missing, Marly is Jaxsen’s dog, and Toni found her still in her pickup. Poor Marley. Toni got Quinn in and moved PBJ over with her, so Rog and Gen Again are together. Ryan Cotton found a ride for our Seldom Rest heifers to Montana. So Toni called and talked to the transporter. We had the grid kids BBQ Monday night, Toni, the three boys and I went. We donated the patties, and maybe they ran out?? They were almost out when we went through the line, but there were not that many people left.  They thought there would be 310 people, which is plenty! At least the coached didn’t talk about every single kid this year. Toni waited until the last minute to get the burgers so she had to run to Othello, then Connell, then into the school, then back home for chores, then back in with Jax to the BBQ.

Tuesday Toni called and talked to the destination place for our Seldom Rest heifers. We hopefully have it all set up. A big thank you to Sitz ranch for letting us ship the heifers to their ranch so Ben and Anna can pick them up there on their Montana tour. Also, Kaine and Kade had a football game in Benton City. Kade was injured during his game, ankle stepped on. Kaine’s team won and both boys played great.

Wednesday there was no practice, so everyone came home on the normal bus, and helped with chores, heifers and steers. Toni was still working on foals when I got home, so I just watched her.  We had some fence to fix, weaned some foals, started feeding hay to the big pasture. That means it is officially fall. So maybe not the best day of the week, but we knew it was coming.

Thursday Ben and Anna headed to Billings to participate in the Nile Show.  They did not take anything, but Anna won a Nile Merit Heifer that we will take next year, and she wanted to watch it. She is also helped Brett and Jill Tonne with the heifers they were taking. Kayla came out and brand inspected the steers that are going to get butchered this weekend, and two heifers that we sold. Kendel came down and helped since Toni needed to leave at 11:30 for hair appt. Ben and Anna made it to Montana, and went and checked out the show.  We weaned a few more foals, fixed some more fence, moved some horses, and did normal chores which includes halter breaking. We have 2 we are working on this week plus Rog and Gen that we are shipping out soon so we just continue to work on them.  It was also Jax’s 11th birthday, so mom made brownies and we drank rootbeer.

Friday was dress up day at school, Kaine and his friends had a group costume and Kaine was the rodeo clown. Anna got to show Brett and Jill Tonne’s heifers at the Nile, she was pretty excited. Angela from NRSC came and Toni showed her around to check things out. Marlo came out and helped with chores. Brandy and Chase bought a bred heifer and came and picked her up. Chad came and we got Tulip, Quinn, and Rog trimmed up. They wanted to get more done but ran out of time. Some of the horses escaped into the alfalfa field, Toni, Marlo and I put them in with the turned out horses. It was dark by the time we got done. Marlo and I got back up to the house and a few of the heifers were out, so we ran them in and Kicker started checking why the fence was not hot. He found where the jump wire was down and got it hot.

Saturday Kaine got up and did all of the morning chores. Kade and Kicker went hunting. Anna and Ben watched the Nile heifer show. Keven and Stefanie came out and got their 5 fat steers and looked at the bull calves. They want to pay the kids to halter break whatever bull they get. They are leaning toward Jack Frost but want to talk to their son first. Next, Kaine and I turned everything back out and took a lunch break. Dad called Toni Saturday morning and the fence along the alfalfa field was down again, so Dad and Toni worked on it until lunch time, and then Toni needed to work on a motion. Luke came out to spend the morning with Jax as his birthday party.  So Jax got out of fixing fence. Kade came down after lunch to work on his steers. I was catching the TX steers and Kaine had just gotten done washing his steer and heifer and was blowing them. Then Kaine, Kade and I got the cows in and sorted the 3 bulls calves out that had escaped and but them back in their pen. Next we met Toni down at the house to do chores. Saturday was the last day for Quinn and PBJ, time to move on to the next victims.

Sunday Toni, Kicker, Kade and Jaxsen went to get Meacham family pics. Kaine got up and did chores early. Then we put wheat straw out with the cows, since the corn stalks have not been harvested yet. We put out mineral and protein blocks as well. It rained off and on Sunday, which we need the rain. We took a lunch break and then caught the TX steers again and cleaned up some stuff outside. We went to do chores, and Marlo met us down to help us. Kaine started feeding, Marlo and I got in Fortune and Smokey Joe and turned Quinn and PBJ out. Marlo went to help Kaine and I haltered the two. Then we went down and fed the cattle grain. Kicker, Toni, Kade and Jaxsen got back around then and Kicker finished up the cow chores feeding hay. Marlo, Kaine and I cleaned out the barn and put out more straw.  Ben and Anna picked up Anna’s NILE merit heifer at 3C Cattle. Thanks Lacey and Chad for your awesome donation to the NILE merit program. Anna is really excited to work through this program and get back to the NILE in 2022. Then Anna and Ben headed to Dillon Montana to get the Seldom Rest heifers which got delivered to Sitz late Sunday night.

Another super busy week. We are really working to get all of the foals weaned and moved to their new homes. So if you haven’t picked yours up, contact us so we can get that arranged. There are quite a few in the weaning pen, but they are all getting along pretty well and we are slowly getting them halter broke. I am not going to jinx it by saying how well it is going, so I didn’t say it. (The foals below are just some pictures of foal, if you see your foal below and have you date set up, we have you down).
