Time just flies with so much to get done

Monday morning was brisk, but at least the sun was out. The boys all had football practice. Anna and Jaxsen did most of chores, before he went to practice, and then Toni and I worked on the foals. We hooked Nevada to Tulip, this is her second day on her.  I led Dual Again around while Tulip led Nevada. Toni worked on Rog and Spark. Anna went home to feed the new show animals and lead them and let them go. Ben and Kicker were out fixing circles, we only have water for another week or so, so you need to get the last soaks in. and FYI, Ben and Kicker work on circles and chase water basically every night when water is on, I just don’t always mention it.

Tuesday morning was a little colder and a little darker, definitely fall weather. I am glad we are not in the weather stream for all of your areas that got snow. I had lots of snow snaps on Tuesday morning. Brad Cox delivered our cow, calf and heifer from Traynhams Ranches, Brett met him there to pick up his two pair and Stacy also came around the same time to pick up Adrian and Emmett’s heifers from the Evergreen sale. Toni took Jaxsen into get team football pics and pick the other two boys up after football pictures were done. That took until around 7, which was dark so I don’t know if they had the stadium lights on for pictures? Toni and Anna had done most of chores, but I still had to move dad’s water, since he was harvesting until late, worked on Nevada and Dual, Nevada did great and did not have to be tied to Tulip. Fed Stinger and Annie, moved Regan around and fed her. So I was busy until Toni got home with the boys.

Wednesday Toni loaded Spark and Regan and sent them on their way to CA. They loaded great and left at first light.  Spark went to a new customer that hasn’t been here before, hasn’t met us, and had never seen Spark before she got here. That is always nerve wracking, but she absolutely loved Spark. Spark is our first foal out of King to be shipped. We had 2 this year, one sold to CA and one to OK. Both are excellent babies.  Wednesday afternoon, the two big boys had football games in Connell, so Toni did chores early so she could go watch Kade. It was Kade’s first jr high game with the 7th grade team. When she was done with chores and about to head home, Hayley called to tell her that there were horses out at Hayley’s house. Toni didn’t think the horses could possibly be ours because Hayley lives a couple of miles away. Toni went anyway and much to her dismay found Gunner and Sagebug in Hayley’s yard. Toni got in touch with Ben and they finally got them home. On the way home, Gayle and Ken’s longhorn steer jumped out (Ben says he just stepped over the fence) of his single wire, low hot fence to join the party and was also out. Kendel came out to help them get him in. So after the studs got put back, then the steer, who has a huge rack of horns, also had to be got in and put back. Kendel went up and tightened her parent’s fence so that it might possibly keep him in for the future.  Gunner had destroyed the wood fence so all of the studs had to be moved around. Leroy got moved up to Toni’s house, Gunner went in Sagebug’s pen, Sagebug went into Gunner’s pen. Toni did not make it to Kade’s game. They finished moving, sorting, and fixing when the game was over. Kade made a touchdown and an extra point for his team along with multiple sacks. Kaine also had a good game, which I got to see, with lots of great blocking and sacks. And Toni added most of this about the studs and Longhorn, I was not there, I was at the football game.

Thursday morning Toni had to go to in person court again. After work was done we worked on foals.  Jaxsen had a game in Mattawa, so Toni, Marlo and Jaxsen went to Mattawa at 4. Kaine and Kade had practice, so came home on the activity bus. I dropped Kade off at his house, Anna was finishing up the steer and heifer chores, I dropped Kaine off to help her finish cleaning the barn.  We also had our friend John deliver a black stallion for us to try. He is a son of Smart Lil Highbrow, who won $97k. We don’t know if we will be standing him in 2022, but we are seeing how he adjusts to our ranch.

Friday there was not any practice, so Kaine and Kade helped with chores and their steers after school. They got to lead foals, it helps having new people for stranger danger. We also had Marlo on Friday to work on stranger danger. And Toni got some good pics of Marlo for a social media deal at Lovejoy Farms, Marlo’s family farm.

Saturday everyone went different directions, or almost everyone. Ben, Kicker, Kade and Kaine went hunting with cousin Manny, this was the first time Kaine and Kade had been deer hunting. They were pretty excited. They did not see anything they could shoot, but did see lots of deer. Toni took Jaxsen to Royal for a football game, poor Jaxsen injured his ankle, luckily it was the last game of the season. Anna, Logan and I went to Pomeroy to get some more show steers from Jana Koller. Anna, Logan and I got home and unloaded the seers, then I rolled up wire at the bottom of the corn field and put out mineral. Toni got home and we went down and haltered foals. We have Nevada and Dual leaving Monday so getting them ready along with the other foals we need to get to their new homes. Then a poodle male came to breed Lynn, so Anna, Logan and I left and left Toni there on her own. Ben, Kicker, Kaine and Kade got home to do the cow chores.  Mom wanted a gate in the old mare pen to walk through when the weather gets bad, so Toni put that in.

Sunday Ben, Kicker, Kaine and Kade went hunting again in the morning, they went to different places this time. Again, nothing they could shoot. Anna tied up the steers and heifers and then washed hers an started clipping them. We had meat buyers come out on Sunday, and actually on Friday as well. Then we went to Jaxsen’s house for his birthday party. We had tacos and banana cream pie. After that we tied up the Texas steers, Anna kept clipping and the boys worked on theirs. Toni and I loaded Nevada and Dual Again since they were leaving on Monday. We also went ahead and loaded Rog, just so we can get her really used to loading. She  is the spitting image of Leroy and acts just like him too. She pretty much stands there and lets us do whatever, but has perfected the horse eye roll if you hug on her neck too long. Then we tied PBJ to Tulip. I took Tulip back to my house to tie steers too.  Toni and Mom aren’t too happy about Tulip leaving, so I kept having to reassure them that I will bring her back.

Wow, we have been busy this week. Time just flies with so much to get done.  We have a full plate of things to accomplish before winter, but we are getting through the list.  One of the questions we have been asked this week a few times, is why do we have Jackpot and King for sale? Jackpot and King are studs we have raised and really reallly like. They are great horses with tons of potential. We really don’t want to sell them, but we have quite a few studs hanging around. We would like to get a black based stud that isn’t related to ½ of our mares. King is super cool, hz black, one copy of the roan gene, and fancy, but he is related to quite a few of our mares. And he is related to Double and Tank, two of our other studs. Jackpot isn’t as related to our herd, but he is a crème based stud and we have way too many of those.  It is a hard decision to put studs up for sale. You put a lot of thought into a breeding program along with the emotional investment. We have the two for sale priced at what we think they are worth, so we will see.  It won’t break anyone’s heart if they don’t sell. And mom does not want to sell King at all, he is her favorite, so the price literally gets added and taken off all of the time. It is back off now I think.

So, this is the last call, the last chance to see the kids show steers or buy some beef for 2021 from the kids.

Happy Labor Day. Monday we got Gunner’s pen in and pulled him and took the 3 pair home that needed to be weaned. We had some people show up to look at the two yearling fillies we have left, and they took Dime, now we are just down to Shi of the yearlings for sale. Dime was a hard one to sell because she is our last Sissy foal, but she needed lots of one-on-one work and we didn’t have time to give it. This is better for her and sometimes you just have to make those hard choices. Next we went to CBJLS to set up for the show in the coming week with the 4H group. We ran downtown and got a coffee or smoothie, I was the only one that got a coffee, when we got done. Then we went home and did chores.

Tuesday I took the camper to work with me to get worked on by the Mobile RV Dr. It is having slide issues. He could not fix it, mobily, since the whole slide has to come out. So I called Broadmoor and made an appointment for Oct 29th. We always go to Broadmoor because they are a big supporter of the community, donating money to the livestock shows and buying kids’ animals. They support us so we support them. Toni, Leslie, Traci, and the tiny girls worked on steers to get them ready for CBJLS and Othello. You know stuff is real when the adults are having to work on the kids’ steers. Leslie and Traci hauled them over to my house so their steers could have a “trip” before their final trip to the fair. Toni worked on Big Boy Brad and Kaine’s steer. Anna’s steer for CBJLS is a bottle calf she raised so no one feels the need to work on him, which may be a mistake, we will see. Ben is back to harvesting, so 2:30 AM mornings. Kicker is also harvesting and checking spud sheds, so Toni and I did not know if they would be there for chores, but they were. So we went and fixed some fence after horse chores.

Wednesday was steer weigh in for CBJLS. Toni and Dad did chores way early. The weaned foals had somehow broken one of our big sprinklers into three separate parts, yet none of them were hurt at all.  Kaine and Kade had football practice, so Anna, Jaxsen and Toni loaded the steers and took them in and met the other two. The steers all weighed in great and were acting unremarkable, which is what we want. Leslie and Traci brought their steers in. The 4-H group had 16 steers at CBJLS. For the most part all of the steers were acting really great.  We had dinner with the 4H group after weigh in to discuss the week.  Our good friend Leonard joined us for dinner even though his daughter has moved to FFA. We must be entertainment or something.

On Thursday Toni and the kids got up early to go in and wash. I went to work for a board meeting. The kids had market classes on Thursday, they all did great. Natalie and Kaine made it back to the championship round, and Kaine was Reserve champion. All of the kids showed great. I went home and did chores. Dad went and picked up the older kids, and Leslie and Toni took the younger kids to the movies, it was part of the fair activities, so was free to the exhibitors. The movie theater was absolutely packed with kids. CBJLS has amazing community support making it very relaxed along with a great experience for the kids. We were pretty worried that the late night movie was going to make some people grouchy, but it was a movie Jaxsen really really really wanted to see and continues to talk about now that he has seen it. Toni and Leslie said it was good. There was action, humor, and of course the popcorn and candy made it worth it.  The movie was called Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

On Friday the kids had Fitting and Showing. They started with oldest to youngest, FFA then down to PeeWees. Anna was Reserve Champion Senior, Kaine was Grand Champion Intermediate, Kade was 3rd overall.  Natalie was Grand Champion Jr and Julian was Reserve Grand Champion Jr. All of the kids showed great. Then we had PeeWees, Kayla showed Kade’s steer, Hannibal Hays, and Savannah showed Jaxsen’s steer, Big Boy Brad. Then Big Boy Brad and Kaine’s steer, Ike, were used in adult showmanship, where Toni won and Wes was reserve. Toni wasn’t going to show but Wes and Jesse Fletcher were trash talking so she said she had to do it. It was a 60/40 split on entries so she won enough money to buy us Chinese food, clearly worth it.  Natalie and Kaine went around and learned how to show the other animals and Anna, Kade, Ady and Julian washed all of the steers. Big Boy Brad was also used to teach the kids from the other species how to show, so that AJ and Ike could rest.  Clearly the real winner here is Big Boy Brad, who may not have been the prettiest steer at the show, but clearly was kind and easy.

Friday night was the Round Robin, it was great, 3 out of the 4 winners were beef kids, George Dress (who is just an all-around good kid), Kaine and Natalie, we are proud of all of them. Our entertainment for Friday night was axe throwing. Toni, Traci, Manny, Natalie, Ady, Julian, Jaxsen Savannah and Kayla all participated after waiting in line for over an hour. They say it was pretty cool. Manny told us that for $12 we could all go to Pasco and throw axes without waiting in line in the cold, but that wouldn’t be free.

Saturday started with livestock judging, then the Connell parade down town, next the livestock sale, then we loaded out steers and finished with the banquet and dance. The sale was great, and thank you to all of our buyers. Koncrete Industries bought Kaine’s Reserve champion steer. Danz Farms (JJ and Judy Danz) bought Natalies, Bar None bought Adys, Grain Acres bought Julians, Corrales Ag (Erica Corrales) bought Kades, Broadmoor RV (thank you for being a repeat buyer) bought Annas, and Ed Poe (again, thank you for being a repeat buyer) bought Jaxsens. We got the livestock judging results were we learned that our boy Flaco (also known by his real name of Trinton) got a 297 out of 300 and was the overall winner. We were so excited and proud for him. Anna was no slouch with a 295 and winner of the FFA division.  All of the kids did great. Then we all hung out and waited to load the steers and then went and ate and the kids danced while we laughed the laugh of the overly tired. We all had a great time, getting to see some great friends that we only see at CBJLS.

Sunday we picked up the stuff from Connell and moved it to Othello and decorated there. It is our last terminal steer show, then we are back to jackpotting the 2022 show steers and heifers. We went out to eat at Checos after setting up and then went home to rest for a few minutes, do homework, starting cooking for Othello and work on the CBJLS pictures.

The kids are going to get a couple of days of school and football practice before we head to the Othello Fair for the rest of this coming week.  So, this is the last call, the last chance to see the kids show steers or buy some beef for 2021 from the kids.  We have some great steers headed to Othello with some great showmen doing their best to bring home the buckles.

It is crazy to think we are already into the middle of August!

Monday the three older kids worked on their steers and then went over to Connell with McCall and McKenna to say good bye to them, and give Leslie and Jay a present with the twins for taking them to Nebraska. They then came home and did chores. I went to Othello for a working meeting and then back to Pasco.  We still have a mares on regumate, Cancan getting doctored, water to move, and lots of other fun fun projects. We are also getting Slugger tamed down to start halter breaking him so moved him to the corral so he can see humans.

Tuesday morning Mike Chubbs came out and butchered three heifers and a pig. Dad went to Allie’s to pick up Stinger. Toni texted and said Chad was bringing some wheat straw out today. Anna and Kaine caught Monica and Addy to start halter breaking, we are going to try to take Monica to Benton Franklin Fair.  Toni texted me that she wanted to turn out Dime and Shi, they have been in with the old mares, so she turned them out in the big pasture with the other yearling fillies. Once Stinger was unloaded the kids decided which one of them was getting a driving lesson pulling a trailer on the way back to my house, Kaine won that so he got to drive.  On the way they saw a cow in heat and the bull calves riding her. So Toni and the kids went out to get her in. They had her in and she jumped through the fence and in into a different pen. Then Anna said that they already had her in once, she pushed the gate open into the wash rack and jumped the wash rack fence and got out. Guess who gets to go on a trip to town?  Jaxsen was not impressed with the cow and talked about how dumb she is for quite a long time after that.

Wednesday the kids worked on their animals. Toni and Jaxsen got down to do chores when the other kids were already leaving, so Jaxsen did not go and work on his steers, it was getting hot, so I feel like he was ok with this.  Dime and Shi had gotten the round pen open so were back in with the old mares, I guess they don’t like being in the big pasture. I got there in time to help change water.

By Thursday Monica and Addy were so great the kids lead them to their pen and back without setting any panels. Jaxsen got stung in the eye lid while doing chores, so he went home with Toni. We got more wheat straw from Chad on Thursday and the Jon Mastre bailed our hay. The water pump went out in the stacker so it all did not get stacked. Murtaugh went with Ben on the tractor to work on a circle and then try to help with the stacker.

Friday Jaxsen was milking the wasp sting, and could not look up what school supplies he needed, or go work on his steers due to his eye. In the afternoon mom and the kids went over to Connell to see grandma. Marlo came to do chores, after chores Marlo went with the kids to work on steers. Jaxsen’s eye is still swollen.  Mom also got stung by the wasps in the arm. I guess the wasps are getting aggressive.

Saturday Leslie, Traci, Anna, Kaine, Kade, Ady, Julian, Natalie, Joe, Dad and I went to Jana Kollers to look at steers and heifers. We met Bill and Kayla there. So we spent the morning looking at 2022 show animals. Then Dad, Anna, Kaine, Kade and I left and went and had lunch at Lyon’s Ferry Mariana. Everyone else went and looked at Bill’s fall bulls. We got back to the house and Kade went home for a bit as Toni had some friends over with their little boy. Anna and Kaine washed their steers. Kaine went and helped Ben worked on the fence in the weaning pen. Anna and I went out and checked the cows and horses. Comet needed to come home, so Anna and I took her to mom and dads. She is getting old and somehow hurt herself and has a swollen shoulder.  Kade and Jaxsen came down and washed their steers. Then they went and helped move stuff around so we could wean on Saturday. Then we went down and did chores, and the kids worked on their two and three year olds.

Sunday morning we weaned the bull calves. We sorted off some cows to send to Toppenish, and so then we got the heifer calves in to sort some cows off that were in there to send. Terry and Erina came and picked up Livvy. Toni and I went out and caught Dolly and brought her to the house, she needs to go in to Sheena and get her travel papers so she can go to CA. We haltered Slugger, we are getting him ready to go to the Midwest. Toni got stung in the hand by a wasp while we were down at the corral. We also moved the yearling colts to the middle pen and King back into the back pen. Kicker and Jaxsen fixed fence between circles 5 and 6. The kids came down and did chores and then worked on their three year olds. Anna rode Jag out of the round pen with the saddle. We make them start the horses without a saddle, so this is the first good ride Anna had with Jag saddled. Toni and Anna even rode down the driveway then around to the back of the house. Jag did really good.

It is crazy to think we are already into the middle of August! We are beginning our last week of summer with the kids before we start the marathon fair season.  We are making our foal weaning schedule, shipping mares home, and getting ready to gear up for fall. Anyone with a foal purchased, please get in touch with us so we can get that foal weaning schedule complete. We do have some really fancy foals left for sale as well. We also have two Hereford steers, that are around 300 lbs for $400.

Anyone looking for beef? The kids will be selling their steers at Benton Franklin, CBJLS, and the Othello fairs with sales on Aug 28, Sept 11, and Sept 18. For those that don’t want to go in person, you can call in, have someone bid for you (we can help with that), or call the fair office for options. There are lots of hard working kids out there with animals for sale, so please support your local fairs as many of these kids depend on the funds they earn.

Last Week in Pictures

Monday everyone was exhausted from the long show weekend.

Monday everyone was exhausted from the long show weekend. Anna fell asleep in the barn in the chair, Toni found her when she got there to help catch and work on the Othello steers. The Othello steers are doing great, only Kaines and Jaxsens had not been worked on a lot, Kade has been showing his. Gunner’s pen was out again, so Toni and the kids got them back in and fixed the fence. It looks like the Express cow is the one that keeps breaking the fence, she tried to jump in with Gunner, but, she does not know that she can’t jump and lands on the fence. Toni was not pleased with her. The kids did chores, Toni and I doctored CanCan and moved the water. Brad and Ady went home on Monday, it was nice to have them for a week.

Tuesday it seemed more smoky and hazy, but, I don’t know if that was actually true. Anna and Kaine got circle 5 in and sorted out bad eyed cows. Ben doctored them when he got home. Anna, Kaine and Kade washed their steers and heifers. Toni was really busy Tuesday so did not take Jaxsen down to work on his steers. But, he did go down and take care of Dagger and help do night chores. The end gun on the circle would not shut off at mom and dads, so the alley was flooded and the kids had to go around. I am still going through pictures from last weekend, Coco and Whitney took 1847 with my camera of all the kids. I really appreciate Coco and Whitney taking pictures.

Wednesday Anna and Kaine got circle 4 in and sorted them for bad eyes. Kade came down and they caught the steers and washed them. Jaxsen’s steer, Anti-Venom, kicked Kade, so Jaxsen just wants to show Dagger and Big Boy Brad now, less risk and all. Anna and Kaine put together the new patio furniture and made the patio look nice. Toni and the boys sat on it so she could send me a snap. Toni and the kids had chores done when I got there, so we went home and did the steer chores.

Thursday was cloudy and called for rain and thunderstorms. Toni took pictures of the kids to upload to the Benton Franklin website for their buyers’ pictures.  Brita and Austin came out to look at their foal Ivy, one of the last two Colonel foals. They have a full sister to her as well. The kids worked on their steers and then went down and did chores before the elusive thunderstorm. Candice, James and the kids came up from SE Idaho for the weekend. But while we were waiting on them the bull calves went through the fence and started riding the heifer calves. So, we had to get them in and lock them up. We heard some thunder but did not see any rain.

Friday Ben stayed home with the kids and hung out with Candice, James and the kids. They were going to go down to the lake but it was too windy.  They are a card family, so while James napped, Ben, Candice, and the kids all played Candice and Ben’s favorite card games, like Phase 10. Toni, Marlo, Kade and Jaxsen did horse chores. Ben and the other kids did cow chores and Kicker checked the circles. I brought Costco home and dad ran into Connell and got tamales from Martha.  Martha has been selling tamales at the Connell Farmer’s Market and they are extremely good.

Saturday morning Toni, Kicker, Kade and Jaxsen went to Leavenworth for the weekend. Anna and Kaine washed their steers in the morning, then we all went down to the lake. We took the Slammer, the kids’ little boat, and Ben and Kaine rode around on it. And James, Candice, Cristy and Kaydence were on one paddle boat and Anna, Lydia, Aeliana and I were on the other. We went down to the dock and the kids jumped off and swam there. Then we paddled back to the other end and the kids swam some more. Then we went back and did chores.

Sunday James, Candice, Cristy, Kaydence, Lydia and Aeliana all headed home. Anna, Kaine and I went to Cecil and Debbies and got Apache and brought her home, she was being mean to Dreamer. Then we went and got Camas and brought her out to help. Next, we went and got Jackpot’s pen in and pulled Jackpot and got Piper and Slugger in to halter break Slugger. We moved Gunner’s pen into Jackpot’s pen, put Jackpot’s mares back out with the cows. Then Yutzy’s came and got Midnight, the appaloosa mare at the house getting bred, and she went home. Anna, Kaine and Camas finished up chores and Ben and I went to Sawyer Brown in Kennewick. Toni, Kicker, Kade and Jaxsen got home and Toni had a guy come out to look at horses.  Then Toni and her kids went and got Gunner’s pen back in and fixed fence.

It was awesome to be home for a weekend and actually get something accomplished. We are slowly starting to halter break foals that are at the house. We are also slowly trying to pull studs and get the breeding season over. We are gearing up for the AQHA Youth Program as well and talking out which 2 foals we will donate this year. We donate 2 every year and feel that it is a great program to support youth in the horse industry. Because it is a scholarship program, we recommend that kids going into their Junior or Senior year apply, just because they are older and have a better chance at getting a scholarship. For anyone that wants more info, we have posted about it on our website and the AQHA has information at aqha.com This is a great program for a kid that wants to get their own foal and take it from weaning all the way to ready to start. We are extremely pleased to be involved and invested in the future of AQHA through our AQHA youth.
