Life has been pretty busy lately. But busy in a good way. Hopefully
Crazy, tired day on Monday, Toni had to be at Yakima first thing for court. Ben had to go to work early, Ben and Anna normally do morning chores, so Kaine got to get up early and help Anna with morning chores. Mom texted that Frieda foaled, finally, and Coco texted that Money also foaled. Both had Jackpot babies. Both Jaxsen and Kaine had baseball games Monday night. Kaine’s team, and Jaxsen team lost, but Jaxsen played like a super star. He told us all about it. Toni says he actually did play really well, because according to Jaxsen he ALWAYS plays like a super star.
Tuesday Kaine and Jaxsen had baseball practice, Kade did most of the horse chores and Anna most of the show cattle chores. Ben has been working late planting, due to them being behind due to the weather, so that leaves them shorthanded doing cattle chores. So Kade has not stayed to do fencing projects after he is done with horse chores, so I feel like Toni thinks her and I are behind on fencing, since it is just her and I. I feel like I am still tired from Spokane. Dad went and picked up the boys from practice so Toni and I could continue fencing. We have decided that once the current project is done that this will be our last new build for the year. We still have fence fixing and our seasonal fence, so plenty of fence work left for 2022. Also, Molly B was a month old Tuesday, happy birthday Molly.
Wednesday Kaine had a game in Othello so dad went and picked him up. We are shipping Blue Starlight to his new home, one of our really great repeat customers Austin and Brita, so we got Blue Starlight in to work on him. He was pretty opposed to being a real horse and wanted to continue living the life of luxury out in the yearling pen. He still got caught, messed with, and loaded three times. Toni likes to load everything three times when we are practicing. The first load can be a fluke, second load can also be a fluke, but if they load three times, then that is good. Toni and I continued our fencing project. Anna clipped the heifer Jaxsen is showing, #1, and Kade worked on his heifers. I went and picked Jaxsen up from practice, so Toni could continue with her goal. I was texted that the corn for the cattle had not shown up yet, it was supposed to be at the house the beginning of the week and we are past the hump on hump day. So I texted Stefan and asked him the status, he said he would get back to me.
Stefan texted me first thing on Thursday, that the corn has been ground, they are looking for someone to deliver it. Which he texted a few hrs later that it should be on its way. Anna and Kade headed to Tri Cities first thing in the morning for FFA state convention. Anna and Kade were both competing. Anna is competing all week, so she is not going to the WA Angus field day with us in Ellensburg, just Toni, the boys and I. Fun Fun. Only 10 of us going in total, Leslie, Traci, Ady, Natalie and Julian, plus us 5. I said to Leslie, we only need 10 breakfast sandwiches?? Are you sure? It does not seem like enough. Mom and Dad went to pick-up horse stuff at Hale’s feed in Ephrata then had lunch with Cousin John and his wonderful wife Cindy. That left Toni in charge of Molly B. Molly B got her halter off and took a run-around, but she was fine and came back to Toni when she was done because she was hungry. Molly B is getting really big and likes to run. Jaxsen had a game on Thursday, dad went and watched it. Toni continued fencing, practiced loading Blue Starlight and did the horse chores. Kaine and I went up and did the show cattle chores, hooked Butte up to the gooseneck, packed up some stuff for the trip, etc.
Happy Friday the 13th. Anna went back to WA FFA State Convention on Friday. Toni texted that half of the yearlings were out, they got the man gate open into the pasture and escaped. Her favorites came to her since they did not know why they had gotten out in the first place. But the mini Blue Devil wasn’t voluntarily coming back in to her pen. Toni left them out until early chore time. Even Blue Devil came back for grain. So all the yearling got put back. Blue Starlight got his last day of loading practice. We went to Ellensburg Friday afternoon for a Jr Angus Show. Anna was competing in Ag Sales, the competition was Saturday, so she could not go to the Angus show with us. However, she was running for Angus Queen, so they called her on Friday and did the interview over the phone. Kaine, Kade, Jaxsen, Natalie, Ady and Julian all showed at the Angus show. Traci was a meanie and left Savannah and Kayla home with Manny. Toni, Leslie and Traci took the kids and I met them there since I had to go to work on Friday. We ate at the pasta place and had a good time
Saturday we woke up at 5 and got out to wash, we started at 9:30 with no fit showmanship, so we did not have to get out there at 4:30. We washed and got the heifers ready to show. Showmanship started with oldest to youngest, without Anna there we only had one intermediate. Kaine was reserve champion intermediate. Kade got to come back for Jrs to the championship round. All of the kids showed really well. We had a fitting contest and then a lunch break and started with the breeding classes. Kade’s fall heifer and Julian’s heifer both won their classes and Kaine’s April heifer got second in her class, so those three heifers made it back to division champions. All of the heifers did really well. Kaine got to show one of Sydney Rylaardam’s heifers in the championship round, she had two come back. Kaine was third overall with his Evergreen heifer so gets a nice check for buying and showing her at the show. Then we packed up and came home. All of the kids had a good time. We got to see lots of our friends and start making plans for the trip to Angus Nationals. Also, Blue Starlight made it to his new home in Ellensburg on Saturday and Brita and Norman came and watched the kids shows.
Sunday we were all home and had lots of ranch work to catch up on, except Ben who was at work all weekend. Anna got back from State convention Sunday morning. I went and showed horses Sunday morning, got lots of pics. The Meachams worked on stretching the fence that Toni and I had been putting up. The kids washed their heifers and steers to prepare for Wheatland on May 21st. Jaxsen and I hauled Frieda down with Jackpot and hauled the two year old Hereford bull to my house for Luis to borrow. The three older kids and Camas emptied the feed out of the Titan and then rode horses after they got done washing everything. Once we finished chores we went out and sorted mares, putting a couple of new heavies in the heavy pen. We also had to grab Spunky and work on her because she is getting ready to move to her new home. We are finally getting down to our keeper yearlings. We still have the grade quarter horse filly that we need to get halter broke and marketed. She is pretty and will look pretty in a new pasture! Molly B also had to be moved, which mom wasn’t particularly thrilled about, but that filly is getting big and needs a permanent pen.
The kids have shows the next two weekends, but one of us will be around for everyone having to wait to look at foals. We have some availability to actually show some horses.
Life has been pretty busy lately. But busy in a good way. Hopefully things are back on track with mother nature and life in general. We are still getting more rain than normal, but that is great because it will allow us to leave the horses on the desert ground longer. We still have quite a few mares left to foal, but hopefully most of them are pretty close. Lots of exciting foals still expected and some really exceptional ones on the ground. I am pretty sure we think every year we have the best bunch of foals. Maybe we do!

Luckily we survived it! (Maybe that is a bit dramatic)
Monday morning Dunny had a beautiful colt by Dude. Crystal, who Allie had brought back from getting AIed to NZ Scotch Time, was out at down at the corral, she did not like living with Stinger, who can be a real B. Toni and Kade put panels up along the side of the fence that is semi-imaginary, since Rocky the old Hereford bull thinks wire is for rubbing, and not as a fence. Crystal then pushed the fence in a different spot and got out, so she went in Tulip’s halter breaking pen, and Tulip went back out with the yearlings. Toni had to run into Connell for Jaxsen’s baseball game, so Kade and I caught Crystal and put her back. Kaine got home from baseball practice, so him and Kade went up and helped Anna pack to head to Spokane.
Tuesday morning Kade and Jaxsen went to school, Kaine, Anna and I finished packing for the Spokane Jr Livestock show. We went over to Connell around 10 to pack tack there. Dad went and picked up Toni and Kade. Somehow, they got all of the stuff packed in his vehicle, including Toni’s new puppy Abby. Toni took her over to Whitney to watch while we were gone. Everyone got there around noon, and then we headed for the Spokane Jr Livestock show. Joe drove the mini Pete with the Eby, with lots of kids. We got here around 2 and unloaded steers and tack and got ready for the show. Everyone is always impressed when we roll in with the Pete and the show cattle, we actually look somewhat professional. Haha. It does not look like I took any pics on Tuesday, so here are some random pictures.
Wednesday the press release finally came out that we are the 2021 Ranching Heritage Breeder of the Year and we finally got the share it with the world. Thank you everyone for your kind words, we are honored and humbled to be recognized as the AQHA 2021 ranching heritage breeder of the year by AQHA. We can’t thank everyone that has supported us enough. Our dedication and commitment to the ranching industry will continue full force.
Also on Wednesday, the kids worked on homework after we washed and fed. Wednesday the weather was pretty good, which did not last all week. Normally we make the kids livestock judge, but it is just way too much. It goes all day. And the Connell FFA team would have only had 3 kids not 4, so that wasn’t going to work. It was great to be up at Spokane seeing all of our show friends. Toni calls these trips Showcations. We also have a bunch of family that goes up to Spokane so good to see them as well. Mom sent massive amounts of baked goods, so we had lots of people over to try the muffins and cookies. The baked goods didn’t last long.
Thursday Anna, Kaine, Kade and I got up at 4:15, to be out at 4:30, to get all of our prospects and market steers washed. Toni was out around 5 and her and Kaine started doing beds, since we were done washing and Anna and Kade were blowing. Then Leslie, Ady, Natalie and Julian got out and Kaine and Julian washed their steers and Ady and Natalie did their beds. The heifers showed first, then prospects and then market steers. Kaine was 9th overall and Kade was 10th overall in market steer prospects. Anna was second in her class, so all three made it back to the championship round. It was a deep class. The winning steer came from a really great showperson out of Montana and was a really fancy steer. In Market, Anna, Kade, Julian and Natalie all made it back to the championship round. Anna was 4th, Kade 6th, Natalie 11th and Julian 12th overall. Everyone showed great. Again, the fat steer classes were tough and the kids showed great and placed really well. The Judge was from Oklahoma and made short work of the classes, so he was able to get everyone done by early afternoon.
Friday since we only had to wash the market steers we slept in to 5, if you have a market steer you have to show them in showmanship. We started with juniors, both of our juniors made it back and Julian was Grand Champion and Natalie was Reserve Grand Champion. Timmy, Julian’s steer, is a great purebred Hereford steer, Julian and I decided he was our favorite of all of Julian’s steers. Natalie had a really great clubby steer form Gary Byee, who also showed really well. Ady, Kade and Kaine are all intermediates, Kaine made it back to the championship round, Ady and Kade showed really well too, but their steers didn’t show the best. Anna is our only senior this year, she made it back and was the 5th overall senior showman, and her steer wasn’t that great. Good job kids. Friday night there was a tornado/funnel cloud over the top of us, which we did not know until the next day when Erina sent us the news link. The weather was horrible on Friday night. Luckily we survived it!
Saturday was the sale, the steers always sell last, so we slept in until 6:30. We washed and fed the steers and then went and had breakfast. We also watched the Twins, McCall and McKenna Lovejoy, graduated from college at Oklahoma State on Saturday morning. We are so proud of our girls. Saturday we continued to have crazy weather, it would pour rain, hail, the wind blew, then the sun would come out. It was crazy. Thank you to all our buyers, Scheffelmaier Meats is a great repeat buyer and bought Anna’s steers, the Spokane booster club bought Kaine, Kade and Adys steers, and Fusion Seeds bought Natalie and Julians. Thank you everyone for your support. All of the steers left Saturday, which is not normal, they normally leave on Sunday. Kicker came up and took the tack and prospects home. We helped clean up the barn, packed panels, pulled t-posts, cleaned and picked-up. We were able to pack up and leave about 7:30 Saturday night. We had to stop and feed the kids, so it was about 10:30 when I got home. But it was worth sleeping in our own beds. We were all exhausted and thankful to be home. Luckily the weather had worn itself out as well for the most part. There were some wind gusts, but not too bad of a trip home.
Sunday Ben made us bacon wrapped shrimp, tri tip and Dutch oven potatoes for Mother’s Day, I do not think Toni ended up with any potatoes or tri tip, it was great. We got to sleep in and then do a few ranch chores. Happy Mother’s Day everyone.

Many of the horses on our sale page are not ours or located at our ranch in Connell. Please call the owners of the horses, they are bred by us or out of one of our stallions, which is why they are our for sale page. There is a really nice broke mare, a green broke mare, a 4 year old with limited ground work, two year old colts, a two year old filly, two stallions and some yearlings.

We always try to plan for the unexpected, be ready, be prepared, but even with all the planning in the world, you can’t outsmart mother nature.
Toni was mad on Sunday we did not get any Easter babies, especially after seeing all of the ones everyone got on Facebook. Still no babies on Monday. I do not know what they are waiting for. The weather was all clear, but cold, on Monday, so dad was finally able to take the load of cows and the bull to Toppenish. We had two mares down Monday that just weren’t acting right, so lots of texts with Sheena regarding what to do. The problem with horses is that they are hard. We kept them both going and kept bugging poor Sheena. We are very thankful for her as our vet. Toni and Kade did the horse chores, and then Toni took Jaxsen to his baseball game and Kade went to help Anna with the cattle chores. Dad went and picked Kaine up from baseball practice and then took him up to help with chores. The heifers and 050 were finally going to leave on Tuesday, so Anna and the men got them in and in the corral, since Arlen was going to be there at 6 Tuesday morning. The three bulls we have left to semen check were also moved to the house for Ben to haul in on his way to work on Tuesday. The lawn mower broke down at our house, which is fairly new, so I had cousin Kendel come and mow my yard, so I did not have to rake and bale it by the time ours gets fixed.
Tuesday morning Ben and Anna loaded up the three bulls and then Arlen showed up, so they loaded the heifers and bull. Still no new foals Tuesday AM. Both mares were still off, so Toni spend another day running back and forth consulting with Sheena. Luis texted me that the Hereford cows were out, so when Anna got home she started to get them in. Ben helped when he got there, after picking up the bulls. So Bullwinkle got pulled and the Hereford cows went out with the rest of the cows. Dad went to St John to take someone and their quilt to the historical museum, and maybe not actually to St John?? Then they went with Skip out to get Skip’s tool box that Ben bought from him.
Wednesday Reba had a dead filly by King. Barb was still bad off as well. Still consulting with Sheena on Barb. Toni and Anna got Reba in to see if Molly B, mom’s bottle baby, would be a horse, and not a pet. Dad and mom had appts on Wednesday, so Toni, Kendel and Scarlett came down and took care of Molly B at lunch time. The biggest issue with this whole scenario is that Molly B does not thinks she is a horse, she has never nursed a horse, and she is scared of Reba. Grafting Molly B is a fail. But we were able to milk Reba and get some mare colostrum for the freezer. The men worked on the pump in circle 5, and got it set up for Isidro to weld. Next it needs to be cemented I hear.
Thursday we had some nice moisture in the form of rain. Now we just need some heat units and the grass will grow. Cousin Traci called me, Apache is at her house since we have never been able to get her bred, for the kids to ride since she had started beating up the mini stud. I told Traci, Apache has been in with the mini stud so she might foal. She never has before, but she is at your house I feel like the chances are greater. Well, she foaled, and had cute colt by Derringer. Kayla has not named him yet. Dad was taking a bull to Nespleem on Friday and a bull to Wilbur, and bringing and bull and two horses back from Wilbur, so Anna and the shags got the bulls in and sorted. Ben got home and they got the tool box out of the back of Butte, the camper moved into the yard, to get cleaned for Spokane, and the red gooseneck hooked up to go. Kaine and Kade got here, after helping Toni and I put up some fence, and helped Anna get the tack out of the trailer. Jaxsen had a baseball game Thursday night.
Friday morning Dad and Steve headed north with the bulls and brought back a bull and two horses. Toni checked the cows and mares, no new foals. We lost Barb early Friday morning to what looks like a ruptured stomach. In hindsight, we probably should have tried to c-section the foal, but we were hoping for a good ending. Marlo came down to do chores, and one of the horses that dad brought back was for Traci to try, so Toni, Marlo and Anna all rode her. She is a retired cutting mare, so very very broke, and very fun. Marlo, Kade, and Toni put in another section of wood fence in Stinger’s pen.
Saturday Jaxsen went with Kolton to his birthday party in Tri-Cities, so Scarlett, Kolton’s sister, came down to hang out with Anna. Anna and Kaine caught their steers and heifers and washed them. Toni checked the horses on her way to my house, and we finally had a live foal, Mil had a fancy blue roan colt by King. Toni, Ben and I got the cows in and sorted them. Then a guy from Connell showed up with his two horse trailer. So we sorted off the sale heifers and he picked one and we loaded it up in his trailer. His wife owns the Brick Store in Connell, which is a cool store that had a lot of antique items and also is kind of like a second hand store. Next we had meat buyers show up, so we loaded their car, now we are out of meat until the next two go in to get butchered. Chad showed up to trim some horses, so Anna Kaine and Scarlett took him up to trim the miniatures, Ruby (the horse Traci is trying) and Katie (Anna’s horse). Ben, Toni and I broke for lunch and them came back down to work cows after. At around 3 Toni, Chad and Kade went down to mom and dads to trim Miss Gen, our new mare from Rusanne and Dan, and went ahead and trimmed Reba since she was there. Anna, Kaine and Scarlett came down to help finish the cows. Kendel got home so Jaxsen got to help as well. After we got done, Toni and Kade had already finished chores, so I hauled two Hereford cows up to put with the bull that dad and Steve brought back from Rusanne and Dan’s house. We worked on a little fence, teased some mares, and tried to get our normal stuff done.
Sunday we finished working the cows. Kade came down and we all went out and got the cows in. The two gray mares had foals, Butterfly and Zoey, and they are with the cows, so we pushed them out of the way of the cows. They both had big red colts, Butterfly’s looks gray for sure, but not sure on Zoey’s yet. Both have nice head markings. We were debating on which of the mares would foal first, so it is funny that they foaled on the same day. I still say mine, Butterfly, foaled first. So we finished getting the cows and sorted off the calves. Kade washed his steers and heifers. We had Hunter and Kaden come out to look at the foals, with Hunter choosing Lura’s big fancy buckskin colt, KT Call me Magnum. We got all of the cows and calves worked, then had 3 bulls to put in a pen for Dad to haul on Monday, and another bull left last Sunday afternoon. We are down to 1 Angus bull left to sell and 1 horned Hereford, both are semen tested and ready to go if anyone is looking.
We had planned to get more fence built to get Sagebug’s pen out, but the cows and calves needed to get worked now that the weather is finally heating up. It is always fun to mess with the calves, see which ones are tame, wild, and in-between. Jaxsen has already said he isn’t’ going to show his club calf next year. The calf was pretty reactive in the chute. I told him to trade with one of the other kids, but none of them were very impressed with the calf either. He is actually a nice calf, so with some work I am sure he will be fine. Sometimes the clubby calves are a little different.
We always try to plan for the unexpected, be ready, be prepared, but even with all the planning in the world, you can’t outsmart mother nature. Thankfully the bad weather looks like it is behind us and we can once again focus on good spring weather. That bad weather really set the mares back and we attribute it to the bad luck we had this week. In the ranching business you have to take the good with the bad, know that there will be bad days, bad weeks, sometimes bad seasons and just keep moving forward. This wasn’t our best week, but it ended on a really good note with three strong healthy colts.

The winter of April 2022
The winter of April 2022 pretty much derailed us on all fronts. Monday dad was going to take a load of beef cows and a bull to Toppenish, however, we woke up to it snowing in April. So sometimes you have to roll with the punches, the cows were unloaded and turned out in the corral. The kids did not have school, teacher in-service day, so Anna went and checked. Piper had foaled and it was blowing and cold, so Toni and Anna got in Piper and her colt, and Twiggy and her colt, and they hauled them to the house. I heard that it was pretty hectic. The snow was blowing so hard that it took awhile to find the horses, get them in, and get the two pair sorted off. By the time they got that done the roads weren’t great, so Toni had Anna drive her own vehicle in case things went sideways with the trailer full of horses they both weren’t in it. Toni let the kids out of fence building for Monday, due to the blizzard like conditions.
Tuesday we continued to have weird April weather, however, it was better then Monday. Due to the Monday weather, we canceled the hauler who was hauling some heifers and a bull we sold. The weather was just too iffy. Snow fell from the sky, but did not really stick, and it rained, and the wind blew, but not as hard. It was still cold. Toni went out to check and Izzy had a cute palomino colt. Then she noticed that Voodoo had legs out, so she called Mom and Kendel for backup. That is the “C-Team” in case anyone was wondering, yet this year they have had to step up their game. She texted me to call Sheena at Sagehill vet that she was bringing her in. She then pulled VooDoo’s filly while she waited for Mom and Kendel to bring the trailer, and then called me back to tell me to call Sheena and say we were not bringing her in. VooDoo then ran off, so Toni, Mom and Kendel loaded the little filly up in the trailer, which she could not stand up at this point, and hauled her to the house. They cleaned her up, gave her colostrum, and mom continued to feed her throughout the day. Since she could not stand up all day, Toni had to leave work and go help mom feed her, so they could stand her up and get her circulation going. By the time I got there, I went out to the trailer to look at her and she was up. I did not know that this was new, so I gave her some pets and encouraging words and went into the house. Toni and Kade were out building fence, Kaine had baseball practice and got to moms about the time I came out of the trailer. I went out to give Kade some water and said something about her being up, and Toni said she has not been able to get up by herself, I said well, she is up. So that drastically improved her chances. However, at this point she still had not had a bm, so we, Toni, mom and I gave her an enema. And about 60 seconds later she had a good bm. So I texted Sheena that she was up and had a bm and was doing better. Sheena did not know she was not on her mom, so Sheena said we should bring her in in the morning for some plasma. About this time Jake Bennett (no relation) showed up to look at the studs on his way to CA, and then went down to check on VooDoo with us. We got down there and Tank and his mares were out in the alfalfa field, so Jake also helped us fix fence and got shocked, we didn’t laugh (or did we laugh hysterically). Tuesday was long. By the end of it we have Molly Brown (Mom named her) about a 50/50 chance at best but we were sending out positive thoughts.
Wednesday the Unsinkable Molly Brown, “Molly B,” was doing great, so dad and I loaded her in the trailer so him and mom could take her in to see Sheena. She pooped all over me so I had to go home and change on my way to work. I guess the enema did wonders. There was road construction on the end of Hendricks Rd, so I also had to wait there, but don’t worry, I made it to work on time. We had some more light snow on Wednesday, it was cold, but a little warmer than Monday and Tuesday. Dad had a dentist appointment and ended up getting some teeth pulled. Toni went and got Molly B, who seemed even more energized after the plasma. Then we had a big blue roan outside mare arrive. Of course Rick and Jaime also had to see Molly B, so they helped Toni unload her and move her back to her living quarters. Jaxsen and Kaine both had baseball practice. Tank’s pen had been put in the corral so after chores we went down and fixed fence so they could go back out.
Thursday we had another snowstorm, so dad canceled going to Toppenish again. Which was good, it got worse down in the valley. Molly B’s vet appointment was also canceled due to the storm. However, later in the day her joints swelled, she was lethargic, and things didn’t seem to be going well. After a consultation with Sheena, who said we had better bring her in and figure out how much money were planned to invest, Toni ran her in and she got more plasma. Her plasma was really low. The good news was her total proteins had come up and weren’t as low, so we still had some hope. I went down and let Tank’s pen out of the alley while Toni was at the vet. Dad took Jaxsen in to baseball and brought Kaine home and took him up to help with chores. The men had some equipment to use the hours on, the neighbor rented it but did not use all of the hours so let them use it, and so they cleaned pens and hauled dirt. I got stuck, where I had driven on Sunday and it was now was wet and muddy due to the storms (which is good we need the moisture), so Kaine came down and got me. We got home and the TV had died. Then Ben decided they were going to go back down and get my pickup out and they got his pickup stuck. So Anna went down and got them. Toni and Molly B got home about 8 pm, but we were still not out of the woods with Molly.
Friday the morning was cold. Tank’s pen was back out. They got locked back up in the alley and got some hay. Marlo came out and helped do chores and unload groceries and fix fence. The fence was not actually down, they have started going through the circle gates. Molly B started actually trotting and moving around a bunch more, so that was a relief. She also started having a lot of attitude which reminded us of why we hate bottle baby horses. But without that attitude she would not have persevered, because the odds were very against her, not that she was totally out of the woods, but things were looking up. We are really a fairly positive family about sickness in livestock and survival. If someone says 50/50, we think great, we have a chance, and we continue to fight for that animal.
Saturday it was rainy and cold again. Dad went and got Camas, so Camas and Kaine pulled out posts in the corn field and rolled up the section of fence that was still up. Then they put out mineral to the cows. Anna and I got in Tanks Pen, then got in Jackpots pen, went and picked up Tanks pen in the trailer, hauled him and mares to Circle 3 and then hauled Jackpots pen to circle 6. It really started to rain after lunch, the kids went out and checked Gunners pen and made sure Jackpot was still in. I worked on pictures from Pomeroy. Ben put the tree puller on the tractor and pulled out some trees. We are have an ongoing war with Russian Olive Trees that we are determined to win. We loaded a bull up and sent him to his new home. Then we went and did chores in the rain. Yes, we need the rain. We also need some heat units with it so the grass will grow.
Happy Easter, sorry I did not have an Easter Post. We went and hunted eggs then the Meachams went to Moses Lake. Terry and Erina came down and we had ham, potatoes, vegetables and pies. Erina got to go meet Molly B with Mom during one of her feeding times. After, Anna and I went and got Izzy, Voodoo and Barb in. We put Izzy with Jackpot and hauled Barb and Voodoo to the house. Barb went in the heavy pen, she is due any day. She is bred to McBride’s champagne stallion. Then Toni and I hauled Twiggy up to Dude and Smokey Joe up to put with Slick. Kade is riding Slick every day and practicing roping. Toni may need to send him to get lessons. We are not a family that ropes, but he seems to have the bug. Toni put out mineral and I walked out to check Mil and see if she is heavy, she is also due any day.

Monday was the first official day of spring break and a wind storm. Toni had court in the morning, Anna checked the cows and horses. Anna’s friends came out and spent the day and night with her. Toni brought lunch home for her and the boys. Dad went up and supervised the girls riding, yes in the wind storm. Kade also had to ride in the wind. We made fun of them, but mom and dad pointed out that we did that crap too when we were their age. You can’t keep a good rider down and wind is nothing. Toni let the boys out of building fence, since Freida was colicing and they had to walk her. Toni gave her some immediate response and some Zesterra from Rowdy Berry. Then they walked her and walked her and walked her. For awhile we didn’t think anything was going to work, but we got her through. It is funny, once she was better, she was better and she wanted out of the corral. Too bad for her that she isn’t the boss. She had to stay in the corral until morning just to make sure no relapses.
Tuesday it was still windy, but not wind storm highs. Anna checked and then the kids worked on steers. Anna continued to clip the steers. Toni took Twist over to hand breed to Whitty again, at Holly’s house. Mom had just enough pie left for Toni and I. So we got that pie after we got our chores done which included putting in posts and teasing Stetson to his mares. Stetson is new to us, so he doesn’t get to be left with the mares, but gets to be with them long enough to get his job done, which can be an hour or 2. So far he is doing pretty well and getting things figured out.
Wednesday the kids continued clipping and working on their steers. The wind still blew a little bit, but not as bad. Toni and the kids worked on the 2, 3 and 4 year olds. They all did great. We tried hand breeding Mud again to Stetson, and she is no longer in heat so we turned her out. We are now hand breeding BB to Stetson, she should be coming in and will move Annie down to breed her to Stetson as well. We put a section of wood fence on the next section of fence we are building. Then the boys went to help Anna with the show cattle and Toni and I put two more wood posts in. The men are continuing to work on the circles and get water on.
Thursday the kids finished clipping and packed up the trailer to go to the Garfield County Preview. Toni and the kids worked on the young horses again and had a second day of them really doing great. Once school starts again they will work on a few each night, but with spring break, they decided to work on all of them. Anna really likes both of hers, Kade really loves Stormy and is trying to convince Toni to take Jitter. Kaine likes both of his, but is also helping Toni with the 2 year olds to see if one of those will really connect with him. After work and chores we put up some more fence.
Friday we finished packing up the trailer. I went out and checked and Twiggy had foaled, we are mad she had a colt, we would like to have kept him, beautiful blazed bay colt. Toni and Jaxsen ran to the bank. Toni had settled a case that was headed to trial the next week that hinged on funds being sent on Friday. Then we loaded up and went to Pomeroy. The cattle all unloaded great, especially since three haven’t been anywhere and the other three haven’t been anywhere since November. We washed the cattle when we got there. Lots of people were at the fairgrounds so we had a nice get together in the barn for awhile. Then all 12 of us slept in Kayla’s camper. Kayla, thanks for letting us use your camper.
Saturday the kids showed, and they all did really well. Most made it back to the championship round, in showmanship, market, or both. Kaine was reserve champion intermediate showman. We all had a great time and it was great seeing everyone. The weather was ok for Pomeroy, meaning it only snowed a little and was super windy. 71 head of steers were at the show and 13 heifers, so a tremendous turn-out for the time of year and weather conditions. Of course it was mostly die-hard show kids, so the classes were deep. Then we loaded up and came back from Pomeroy. As we rolled home in an exhausted state, we realized Ben and Dad had done the horse chores. So all we had to do was unpack the cattle, the kids, the vehicles, greet the dogs (because they missed us the most), and do a check on the livestock to make sure all was well. There were some things that we needed to deal with on Sunday, but nothing that really couldn’t wait. I am not even close to done with the pics, so I have not gotten to the Natalie, Ady, Julian, Vanna and Kayla yet, but they were there.
Friday the bulls were fighting through the gate, broke the chain, and got all of the cows mixed together. Since we were leaving we left them until Sunday. So here we are on Sunday in the cold and wind getting the cows in and sorting them. We sorted the heifer calves into one pen and the bulls into the other. After helping us get them in the kids washed their steers. We turned all the cows back out with the proper bulls. We then fixed the fence after. Sunday was long. Probably partly because we were still tired. Really it mostly went well, it just felt like a lot.
It is crazy to think we are already to the middle of April. Foaling has really slowed down, but I think it always feels like we have a wave of foals, then a break, then another wave. We have about 5 mares that are due, so just a waiting game. With the weird weather, it might be best if they hold out for a bit.
We decided to add a two-year-old for sale on our page, a Leroy daughter out of Ro, our Silver Gun daughter. This is a really nice red dun filly. She has tremendous potential, loves people, quick, smart, really a great project for any age. Her pedigree speaks for itself in terms of a listing of great AQHA horses with performance. Jean has been a favorite of the family since she was born. We would like to see her go to a performance type home. We have decided to offer her for sale because we have too many young horses and the kids want to ride what they have already gotten started. Kaine likes Jean, but he wants something bigger. This is a very pretty and feminine typey filly. We are excited to see her reach her full potential.
