Our Last Fair is in the books, now it is time for Football.

Monday back to school and work for a few days, and then we will be at the Othello Fair. The boys all had football practice. Toni had a lot of phone calls to return. Dad worked at Pioneer Monday. We got steers ready, paperwork ready and food ready for our last terminal show. Othello is one of my favorite fairs, and as tired as a I am, I am actually really looking forward to Othello. They have some different events to watch that are fun, mounted shooting, draft pull.  The food is great and cheaper than the BF fair. It is a smaller, more community oriented, fair.

Tuesday the kids went to school, the boys to football practice, and Toni and Anna hauled our steers into Othello. Leslie hauled their steers in. So it was Toni, Anna, and Leslie to unload all 7 steers and the 5 heifers. Monica and Vixen were pretty anti going to the fair. Monica tried to load herself back up in the trailer to go home when she realized she was at a fair. After she realized there was no going back, she settled in ok. Stacy brought Adrian, Kaine and Kade after practice. I got there after work and chores.  We made a deal with Stacy that as long has he hauled the kids to and from practice, Adrian could stay with us and Stacy didn’t have to stay at the fair. He thought that was a good deal. So did we!

Also on Tuesday, we heard our good friend Gary Moore lost his battle with cancer. Anna is riding his horse, Katie, she has had her about a year now.  Gary and Judy have come and watched the kids show the past few years. Gary was a great man and will be missed by many.

Wednesday we had market and heifers, it did not start until 10, so we slept in until 5:30. We washed everything and then Simplot made us breakfast. It was great. FFA showed first and then 4H. Anna was grand champion in Market with Pumpkin and Kade was reserve with Kid Curry aka Silver. Kade really wanted to beat Anna, but his steer was just a touch too light to win overall. Both steers have been awesome in the show ring. Kaine took his homegrown extra steer that hadn’t been worked on as much and didn’t have a club look. He was a good steer, just not a show steer.  We had lots of kids in the championship round. Next we had the heifer show, FFA, 4H then Open. Anna was reserve champion overall with her Angus heifer, Beth.  This was Beth’s first show, as she is a 2021 AI calf. She was a rockstar other than a few kicking incidents.  Kayla, Savannah and Grace, who are 2, 4 and 5 years olds, all had division champions in open. I was named the Ringmaster by the Beef Superintendent so I got to run the heifer show the way I wanted to, so it was great. Then we went back and had lunch burritos and washed. I went home and did chores and then came back.

Thursday was fitting and showing. The kids all showed great. They all made it back to the championship round, even Kaine with his steer that had no experience. I would just like to say that Kaine handled the steer like a pro, even when the steer wasn’t cooperating.  Anna was Grand Champion Senior showman, Kade was Grand Champion Intermediate showman and Julian was Grand Champion Jr Showman. Anna was also overall 4H showman and Judge Toth said if he had a reserve it would have been Julian (Kade also showed very well in the final drive).  When Judge Toth told Julian he liked Julian’s belt, Julian replied “I do too, but it would look better with a belt buckle.” That kids is witty! He must have made the perfect impression because he was the top Jr and showed like a rockstar. Then Kayla and Savannah went and showed PeeWee sheep with the Shattucks. They had A LOT of fun, so Savannah helped them put away the lambs.  The bad thing was that after showing the sheep, the two littles thought they owned those sheep. We got to hear over and over, I want to walk my sheep.  How many times can one sheep be walked? Thousands. Then we broke for lunch and the kids went around to learn how to show all of the animals. The beef kids all started out together and before we knew it there were 15 kids all in a group working together to learn how to show each other’s animals. It was pretty cool. All of the kids made good friends with some of the kids from other species on Thursday. We saw many of those kids during the rest of the fair as they came to hang out with our group. Thursday night everyone celebrated a belated birthday for Marlo, she had gone to Kansas for her birthday so we did not get to celebrate it then.  It was a really fun celebration that ended with cupcakes from the Cow Path bakery in Othello. If you haven’t tried the Cow Path DO! It is really good.

Friday I had to go to work. However, the kids had judging in the morning, and Ady beat Toni’s judging scores, so she won a milk shake from Toni. Toni had a respectable score, but Ady was the Grand Champion junior and had an awesome score. The kids had round robin at noon, and then an awards ceremony after, to find out how they did in the round robin and get their awards. At the awards ceremony the kids found out that Fedex had lost their belt buckles. Julian was devastated, it is his first one and he was really looking forward to it. Anna won the senior division of the round robin. After the awards ceremony the kids went to do their homework.  I went home and did chores on my way to the fair Friday night. Toni had 8 box seat tickets to the rodeo that night, so Traci and the kids all went (that is with Traci holding one kid on her lap).  Thanks Traci for the sacrifice because the rest of us were way too tired to make it through the rodeo. I guess the cows for the wild cow riding were woofy, like hunted some of the competitors. Of course, that leads to reminiscing about Ben’s days doing the wild cow riding at Othello with our good friends Hugo, Luis, and his brother Chad. Once Hugo quit going and it was just Luis, Ben, and Chad they won the wild cow riding both nights. And Hugo never did while cow riding with them, and some of the pics below are from the old days. LOL. They “retired” after that 2-night win. Not saying anyone was the weak link, but……

Saturday was the sale, the sale was great, thank you to our Othello buyers, Dale Bayley (Kaine and Kade), Edith Spencer (Anna), K’ntucky Turf (Julian), Industrial Ventilation (Natalie)and DC Drilling (Ady). After the steers sold we went and had fair food for lunch. Next we walked around, had balloon animals made, watch some more of the sale, bought a couple of pigs, told Whitney we bought her a duck (we didn’t). Then we went to the buyer’s diner and after that Kaine, Keegan and Ady got hypnotized. It was really funny. At home Ben weaned all of the calves and gave them a blackleg booster. He rolled up with wire in circle 5 that we were using as a pen for Gunner on the irrigated grass.

Sunday we cleaned up and went home, that was our last fair, now to get ready for a jackpot show in November. We get to start over halter breaking. And on to weaning and shipping foals, calves are all weaned. Ben made sure the fence was up below circle 3 and moved the big Angus bulls down there. We moved the new group of show heifers and steers in the big run so they had more room to run around. The kids did homework all day.

The weather has really turned and we finally got some rain! When the rain finally hits you can’t complain, even if you are at the fair and would like to complain, you can’t.  Now we start Friday Night Lights- the two big boys have been going to football practice and now it is time to start the games. Jax will start playing on Saturday. Fall is not officially here until Wednesday, but it is starting to feel like it.

” tried being reasonable, I didn’t like it.” Clint Eastwood

Monday was Veterans Day, a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. We would like to take a minute to thank all of the Veterans out there.

Monday morning dad took a load of beef cows to Toppenish. Anna and I fed grain and checked animals, then I took mom to her physical therapy. She is getting physical therapy on her broken wrist. After physical therapy we got lunch to take home from checos. Following lunch, Kameron came to get the bred heifers, so Anna, Kaine and I got them in and sorted out the old cows that we had left in. Next, we caught the heifers and steers and then Toni, Kade and Jaxsen got there when we were almost done. The 4 kids worked on heifers and steers and Toni and I worked on M&M, Macy’s heifer that she is getting on Sunday. M&M did really good for her first time with the show stick. Then, Toni and I went down and looked at the bull calves and checked on Leroy and Fancy. Both are doing great. The kids washed off the grass carpets for our show on Sunday, we are just having one with the 4H group at the house since the kids missed the jackpot on Nov 2nd. Toni and I went down to do chores after and worked on the three foals. Also, I worked on getting breeding information into AIMS from our spreadsheet, we are going to start calving around Dec 17th, so I had better get it before then. I also made an apt for our grass fed heifer on Nov 20th, half is sold, but if you want some grass fed we have a half left.

Tuesday started out as a foggy day, and worked its way into a rainy day. Toni had caught the plague from the kids, I am hoping to not catch it. Since Toni was ill, I went with dad to the Franklin County Cattlemen’s meeting. I had not been in a while. Dad and I had a good time, I sat with Mindy and Leslie and Dad sat with Alexanders. Also on Tuesday, Toni says I am no longer allowed to write about my dislike for Daylight Savings, so I have stopped writing about it. Toni and the kids still did chores even though she had the plague.

Wednesday was another dreary day. Toni was still sick, but Toni and Leslie went to the Washington Cattlemen’s meeting in Kennewick in the late afternoon. Toni did chores before she left. Joe got home with Anna’s steer from TX, they got home a little after 6 PM, so we went over and picked him up and put the little red steer in with him. He looks really good and is pretty calm considering he just made a 36 hour trip by himself. He just stands there and stares at us all like what is going on? Jaxsen was not too interested in going to see the steer, so we dropped him off and he went in to see Great Grandma. He and Great Grandma had quite the conversation, but it is a secret.

Toni was so sick with the plague on Thursday that she came back early from the WCA Conferences, and did not even make it down to the conference. Anna, Kaine and Jaxsen did chores and then I ran Jaxsen home when I got there.

Friday Toni was still sick, but she took Double Down to the Sagehill Clinic to get Coggins, Brand, and Health to go to CA next week in the Youth Development Program. She started to feel a little better as the day went on. But, still not great. Kicker went down and helped the kids with chores.

Saturday we had not booked any horses to leave since we thought the boys had a basketball game. Ben went out and worked on fences so we could turn the bulls out on stalks and the calves out on the grass. The 4 kids and I caught everything and washed the show animals. Then we worked on them and took them for a walk. Dad, mom, Skip and Jack all got to moms on Saturday. Our cousins Brandy and Jody also came over to meet Jack, so Brandy’s kids went out and saw the horses and petted Rocky the bull. Toni and Kicker put out straw on Saturday as well.

Sunday was our KT Invitational, basically we invited the members of our 4H group and a few others. The kids, Kicker and I got up and started catching the animals. Toni went down and loaded Cutter and then she came down to help. Kicker went to put his tri tip on the smoker, since we were having a birthday party that evening. Ben was up at the house making bacon wrapped shrimp. We got everyone washed and blown and then went and had lunch. Josslin and Macy came, Bella, Adrian and Emmet. Macy showed her heifer, I don’t know what her name is yet, Bella showed Kade’s steer Nigel, Adrian showed Kade’s steer Goldmember, Emmet showed Kaine’s steer Austin, Anna showed her Texas steer, Sir Freddy G, Kaine showed his Montana steer, Smithers, Kade showed his Evergreen steer, General Gogol, and Jaxsen showed the clubby heifer, Foxy. We all had a great time, Adrian won market with Goldmember and Kade got Reserve with Gogol. Anna won showmanship and Kade got Reserve. We had volunteer judge Heidi Shattuck, and she really worked a lot with the kids. Tina Kocar donated ribbons, and they were AWESOME. If you want to buy ribbons go to Ribbons by Tina. Horseshoe Angus donated mugs for the Champion and Reserve and candy bars for all. Josslin stayed and helped do chores. More pictures coming soon.

After chores we had a birthday party for Anna and Toni, Toni is turning the big 40 on the 19th. We all also got to meet dad and Skip’s brother Jack over the weekend. California cousins, Linda and Patricia flew up to meet Jack too and participate in the birthday party. Lots of food and laughter, you can’t have a better birthday party than that!

Even we don’t know how we get it all done sometimes!

We had a pretty normal Monday here, you know, Reptile Man at the library, washing steers and heifers, Jaxsen playing in the dog pool with the dogs. The steers are all doing great. The calves are getting tired of being washed, so they were a little rowdy Monday. But besides that a pretty normal day here. Toni did not end up having to go to Yakima for the week for her big bankruptcy case so the kids were actually able to work on their show cattle which made Anna happy.

Tuesday started normal, then Debbie texted that Truffles had foaled and the palomino mini mare had stolen it. I was already at work so I texted Anna and she called Dad, my dad not hers, and they went over to rescue Truffles and the new baby. Ben met them there and helped they get them loaded. Then dad and Anna fed the new little colt some colostrum, just to make sure he got it. Kaine and Kade went with Leslie and the 4H group to the water park in Moses Lake. Anna did not go since she stayed home to take care of Truffles and the foal. Anna is very diligent about getting work done and doesn’t seem to care if she misses some of the fun stuff. The boys on the other hand, are all about the party! After work, Toni hauled Colonel to the house, we are hand breeding Kool to him, and since she is so old we don’t want to turn her out. Colonel is not super impressed with being locked in, but he is being pretty good. We also hauled Red Robin and Stinger to the house to get an ultrasound on them on Thursday. We still have Cammie, Bayless’ black mare and Abs to get to the house, the rest of the 12 mares are already there.

Wednesday we woke up to some rain. Toni had a lot of work to do, so Kaine and Anna caught the steers, washed them and tied them up. Kade, Jaxsen and grandma (or mom to me) picked raspberries so mom could make raspberry pie, one of our favorites from Grandma Ruth’s recipe. Kade and Toni were waiting for me with the trailer when I got there, they had brought Abs and Bayless’ black mare down. So we went out and caught Cammie and brought her back to ultrasound too. It is SUPER fun to try to take mares out of Sagebug’s pen. Sagebug is a pain in the butt, and so are all of the foals out there. I had to sacrifice myself and pet all of the foals while Toni caught Cammie. Sagebug and Money had loaded themselves in the trailer, so we locked them in while we went and took pictures and got Cammie moved. Sagebug is still a really young stud (he is 3), but so good minded. But he does not like it when we take mares out, he likes addition not subtraction.

Thursday Toni went and got the kids bright and early to help with ultrasounding. Anna and Kaine had the steers tied in the barn when she got there. We were ecstatic to find out that Cammie is FINALLY pregnant. Red Robin is also pregnant, great news. Stinger is open again this year, we are going to try something different with her next year. Abbey is no longer cycling, she is 26, we were not surprised. Pistol and Pepper both have twins, but Pistol’s looks like it is resolving itself. Pepper, we need to watch. Overall a super good day. Toni took the kids up afterwards to work on their steers and heifers. Then the kids cleaned out the gooseneck for Toni to take them to a steer clinic with their 4H group Friday. Also, Colonel bred Kools on Thursday, then we gave him a bite of grain. We think he might actually like this hand breeding business! Thursday was also Shannon Miller Case’s bday, but we missed it trying to get everything done.

Friday morning everyone was up early to go to their steer clinic. Toni took the kids over and they did great with their steers. This was these three steer’s first outing. McCall did the clinic while some of the 4-H group did other things, lots of people and steers were there. Everyone was hungry afterwards, so they went to the Burger Factory on the way home. Then they packed up the show box to get it ready for the show next weekend. Also on Friday, Coco stopped and got Jackpot and is bringing him back from CA. They had a layover in Oregon Friday night. The California contingent is headed North. Coco has been bringing Addy up to go show with us for a few years now and the kids always enjoy their time with her.

Saturday morning we had a horse clinic put on by Dusti Kissler. We invited the 4H kids over so that they were ready for when they made it to the round robin. After showmanship Dusti, Anna, Kaine, Kade and Toni had a riding clinic. Toni rode Friday, Anna rode Ollie, Kaine rode Cad and Kade rode Slick. Everyone had a great time, but it was a long hot day. The horses and humans all did great. Friday has come back as an amazing horse that we could not be happier with. She was the only filly out of Colonel and Peppy . We have always loved her and she has met our expectations. We can’t thank Rachael Hamby enough for the training that has gone into this horse.

After the clinic it was lunch time and then the kids started washing steers and heifers for the upcoming shows. I helped Jaxsen and the rest of the kids did their own. Next, Kaine, Kade, Jaxsen, Anna, Ben, Kicker and I moved the Hereford cows down to the pen Bishop was in. We got the bull calves in to check for bad eyes, there is a lot of tall grass in that pen and they get grass seeds and cheat grass in their eyes that has to be pulled out or they will get a blue spot. While we were looking through the bull calves Coco and Addy drove by with Jackpot. So the boys and Anna went back to the house to see Jackpot. Toni had left to get work done, but she showed back up when Jackpot did, coincidence? Kicker, Ben and I came back when we were done. Jackpot looks and acts great. We are all happy he is home for the short time he will be here. Also, the hay was ready to bale Saturday night, so we skipped the birthday party we were going to go too for our friend Caleb and Kicker and Ben were out late with the hay. The dew came in too heavy and they had to finish Sunday. I am sure everyone is noticing a pattern here, we are too busy to do anything with our friends! Luckily everyone pretty much knows how we roll, so no one is surprised when we send a so sorry text.

Sunday we woke up and caught the steers. Hay was still being baled and Kristi was out with Toni looking at Genuine (Colonel Belle colt that she bought). Kristi, Lynn, and Matt all went on an abbreviated tour. Matt wanted to pet Rocky and they wanted to see the tiny babies as well as Genuine. They then headed down to the Merc for some local food. The twins were coming at 2 to help the kids clip everything, so we ran to town for groceries before they got there. However, the twins got there early so Anna called Toni, Kade, Coco and Addy and had them go down and get started. The heifers and calves still had to be caught. When we got there they had everything caught and set up and were getting started. So the kids and twins clipped all day on Sunday.

I went out and checked the cows, I made sure everything was paired up from the move the day before. One cow and calf had come back, however, there was still a fence separating them, so I got them paired up. Everything else looked good. I went back to the house and helped the kids for a bit. Then, Toni, Coco and I did chores. Colonel and Kool are still having their abbreviated fun, and we think Colonel is really getting the hang of it. He does his business then walks back to his pen and nickers at us for his bite of grain. He is not a stupid horse!

We are excited to have all of our owned horses out of California and back in Washington. We got good quality training from both trainers, but it was time to get Friday home and take Jackpot to the next phase of his life, whatever that is going to be. It is truly a great feeling to have these horses live up to the expectations that we have for them and know that as our breeding program moves forward, it just keeps getting better.
