Monday was sunny, so Mastres got a little bit more of our hay baled. We worked on foals. Tulip got tied to the other 2, so know she has “pulled” all four of our foals for this week. These four are a pretty excellent group to start with. We could lead, to some extent, all four the first day. So hooking to Tulip is more just so they all four get worked on efficiently. Kade had drivers Ed. Kaine and Jaxsen had football practice. Anna worked on her show animals and the min foals. Tulip is not happy about being back in the halter breaking pen. I went to Connell for a meeting with Columbia Basin Development League on the completion of the Columbia Basin Project. Toni had court.

Tuesday it rained in the morning, and then it was sunny, hopefully we can get some more hay up. Mike Chubb came and harvested a steer, we have a lot more if anyone needs meat. Jaxsen had a game in Royal on Tuesday, Marlo and Toni went, he was on fire. He had some good sacks and ran the ball 20 yards on a kick return. Anna did the horse chores because Kade had drivers ed, when Kaine and I got home we worked on the foals. I worked on Juju and Coffee and Kaine worked on Fooler and Super Puncher. It is really good for Kaine, or just anyone new, to get in the foal pen helping to get these foals exposed to new people. All four of these didn’t care about Kaine being new. They were fine. Ben and Anna also sorted the calves for Toni to haul to Moses Lake on Wednesday, and put them next to the chute and 811, 745 and 1 (a cow, bull and heifer), also next to the chute. Toni and Marlo brought Toni’s picked up and we hooked it up and discussed the plan for the next day.

On Wednesday Kaine had to go to school early to watch football film. Anna found the haul slips and filled them out and then Toni got here and Anna, Kade and Toni loaded the load. I had already left for work, as well as the men had. I hear the cattle all loaded great and everything fit. We had to use the 3 compartment Wilson to get them all, but it was good. It was a quick trip and then Toni was back at work. We worked on the foals that night, they are all doing great. Kaine helped, since he is home too late after football to help with the other chores.

On Thursday Mom and Toni went down to see grandma, they wore matching shirts and were twins. Grandma is at Kadlec right now so everyone is taking turns staying with her during the day there. Kaine had a football against Toppenish. They played a great game, Kaine had some really good tackles and blocks. I worked on Juju before I left and turned on the circle. Toni worked on the rest of the foals. Kade did not have Drivers Ed on Thursday so he rode his horses. However, he did have to drive though, so did not get to ride as long as he would have liked.

On Friday I went to see grandma after work and have dinner with her. Marlo came and helped Toni worked on foals. Marlo really liked the 2 she worked on and they liked her in return. These four foals were already good enough on Friday to go out in the driveway. The kids did chores and then Kade went to rope, Anna went to work on her show animals, Kaine was sore from his football game and I do not know what Jaxsen did. The PVF sale was Friday starting at 6:30 pm central time so Toni stayed to watch the sale on CCI until Kade got home, then Kade watched. One of our top three heifers was the very last to sell so somehow Kade got her bought. We have wanted a PVF heifer for a long time. Now we just need to ship her home from IL.

On Saturday we loaded out the minis first thing. Two went via shipper to Montana, which we were really happy to meet the shippers, Cindy works at the Billings horse sale, so we now have a contact for shipping home if we get anything at Billings in the future. Wee Lass went with her owners, in the cab of the pickup. Next Juju left and then Coffee. Juju went up the ramp like a pro, I guess he was ready to hit the road. Coffee was not quite ready to leave and took a little longer to get him in. But he was not bad. We had a lunch break and then got the 4 heavy Hereford heifers in, so we have one heavy Angus heifer left (2 have already calved) and then the 4 Herefords. Ben and Kade tied his red half clubby steer to Basil, the donkey. Jaxsen washed his steer Guns. We did chores, worked on foals, etc. The sale at Moses Lake was still going when we got done so we checked it out. Our friends Joe and John had 2 lots in the sale. They didn’t sell great, but didn’t’ sell bad.

On Sunday morning two of the clubby heifers headed to Idaho with cousins. Kallie and Wyatt bought Baby Girl and the Fur Trader heifer to show. Then we went down to load Fooler. The buyer was a little late, so we had time to start some other projects. Toni started filing and I started making the 2024 mares page list, so we can started deciding who we are breeding who too. Fooler did pretty good loading when Tracy got there, slowly but surely. Then we took a lunch break and Toni did her billing and I got the horses in out of the desert that had escaped out there. McCall came and her and Anna washed and clipped and got ready for the Nile. We tied Kade’s red steer up to Rosie that afternoon and he worked on him, and then him and Anna switched the steer and heifer. Kaine fixed my Colorado tire and worked on his steer and heifer. After chores Toni and I got in the next three foals to halter break, Smokin, Saul and Runner. Two colts by Gunner and one out of a Gunner daughter and by King. Smokin is a pet so it will be interesting to see how he does. Sometimes pets are the worst.

Another week gone by so quickly. Next week Anna has her three lots at the Evergreen Sale in Ellensburg, selling Oct 14. She has worked really hard on these three calves. If you know anyone looking for show calves for next year, she has 1 Angus heifer and 2 Angus steers that are show ready. She has been working on these calves for months, the heifer has already been to a show and handled by small children. These are really good calves. Please come show her your support if you have time. We are very proud of the hard work she has done to get ready for her FIRST, probably not last, auction.

Monday I worked from home so I could rest some more. Toni also worked from home, but that is where her office is. The kids went to work on their cattle for the following weekend. Ben and Kicker had gotten Fatness in for Kaydence to show so her and Anna got her caught and washed to make sure she wanted to be back in the show string. The next pick was for her to show Reece’s heifer, who is only entered in Peewee so far. But, as long as Fatness got grain she was good to go. Monday was also the day that Jax had to get back into work mode. Not an easy thing when a kid does not want to show at all. After some pep talks he went to work on his steers in the afternoon. The men got our hay baled while we were gone, and the stacking area by the corral is overflowing again. We have told the boys multiple times you can’t feed freshly baled hay to the horses, and thankfully they have listened. We also have Lily quarantined from her long trip home. She can see other horses and is getting treats from mom every day, so she is decently happy. I am sure she wants to go out with the other yearlings, but at least her best friends are horses now and not show heifers. We were all a bit worried when she seemed bonded to the heifers that she was having an identity crisis. Kade got his horses caught and rode and roped a bit on Monday.

Tuesday back to work in person. I still think I am too tired. Toni had told her clients she would not be back until Tuesday, so even though some were calling her Monday, she was able to catch up. So Tuesday the calls picked back up. The kids started cleaning out the trailer and repacking. Also working on their steers and heifers to go to Sagebrush. Dad and Mom went to Spokane to a funeral on Tuesday. Kade went back to roping and riding. Hunter, who bought Lura’s colt last year, and his gf Miah, came by for a tour Tuesday night, so Toni went around with them checking the horses and looking at them all. Miah ropes so all three had a good time looking at everyone.

Wednesday Toni and dad took a steer to Mountain View Meats for Erina and Terry in CDA. On the way home they stopped at Ally’s and picked up Cammie and Cinder. Both are bred to Goodbye Blues, a running stallion standing at Ally’s. Cammie is confirmed in foal and Cinder was just bred. However, it is mid July, we are done. The kids switched the circles, circle 4 and 5, and sorted out the bad eyes to get doctored. Toni took Anna and Kade to a horse show at Saddle Club with their Double daughters, Gunnie and Stormy. Both fillies did awesome. Toni reminded us all that the last time she showed at the Saddle Club she also showed a Double daughter, Flecka, and was pregnant with Jaxsen. So the tradition of Double daughters at the Saddle Club continues on. Traci and the girls came over and watched and then they went back to Traci’s for ice cream. Kaine finished up the chores at our house. I asked Jaxsen where his mom went when I got there, I knew but was checking him. This is like 6:30, so she had been gone for a while, and he said I don’t know, wait, I think I might have found her, did she go to the horse show?? Do not depend on him to notice if you are stuck in the ditch. I asked him if my pickup was back, which it was and he was at my house when it showed up, and he said I do not think so.

On Thursday the kids cleaned out the trailer and packed it to go again. They clipped and got ready. Kaine and Kade put the hitch in for the 5th wheel and the men put the tv up, the old tv broke, we had to get a new tv for the camper. Of course that did not fit on the wall mount, so we had to get a new wall mount. We don’t even watch the tv that much, but if you need it you need it. Everyone was still really tired from Jr. Nationals, but was resigned to going again.

On Friday I took the camper to work, then was headed to Colfax after. Toni, the kids and the BB Crew headed over earlier. Grandma is back home from the rehab facility, so everyone got to see her. She still needs help and is having to recover from a broken hip, but on the road to recovery. I had a bunch of water in my Costco cart, that the shopper said was sold out, 100 degree heat and no water…super impressive. So after our arguing through messages, he dropped my order, I got a new shopper, and guess what, EVERYTHING on my list was in stock. I have had Hugo before, he is great at picking out produce, etc. Then I loaded up and met them in Colfax. Thanks to the men, we left them behind to do chores again. All the cattle unloaded really well. Kade and Kaine took their extra steers that had never been anywhere before, and they really didn’t like the little kids, but they were fine. The steers didn’t look the best, but I guess that is what happens when you leave a 14 year old and a 15 year old to manage their own cattle. They have been showing long enough now they should know what to do.

On Saturday we did not show until afternoon, so we slept in until 6 and then got everything washed. We had a great time visiting with everyone. Even Uncle Skip stopped by in the morning. The show went well, Ady, Anna and Kaine made it back to the championship round as standbys. Aram and Luis came with Aram’s steer, so we stalled him with ours. This is Aram’s first year showing and he did great. He improves tremendously every show. Natalie and Aram both made it back to the Washington Cattle Feeders Class. Kaine and Kade made it through their classes with their steers.

On Sunday we started showmanship at 9, so we got up at 5. The kids all did great, Julian was 3rd overall in Jr, Kaine was 4th overall in intermediate and Anna was reserve champion in Sr. It was Kaydence’s first time showing ever and her and Fatness did great. Then we had the heifer class. Kasen made it back with his fall Hereford heifer, Kade’s heifer did pretty good for how green she is and coming back from Jr Nationals. Kaine and Kaydence were first in their classes so made it back and Anna was 2nd with Stormy so 2nd in her class. Then we packed up and headed home. It was a hot hot weekend. We had lots of friends at the show and even more came to see us. The kids all did great helping the younger kids that were at the show for the first time. Most of the older kids were in the pee wee classes with kids helping them out. Overall it was a really good weekend.

We came home to even hotter weather, and the market is getting hot too. We have had lots of calls on the foals. For some reason people are just buying and not coming to see them. Totally fine with us, but we are always willing to give the tour when our schedules permit. Like always we are very pleased with the foals and think they are all great.

Monday we woke up to a skiff of snow that when you headed south it didn’t last long, but the roads north were snowing and foggy. No new foals on Monday. The boys did chores, Anna had FFA competition in Ag Sales after school. Everyone on her team placed in the top 10 and her team placed first. Good job Anna, Keegan, Hardy and Brandy. Dad and Toni took the red trailer into Othello welding to get fixed at around noon, so Toni could take dad to subway for lunch. The handle on the middle gate had broken off when dad hauled a load of cows to Toppenish last week.

Tuesday Kade went his FFA competition during the day. Toni checked and we finally had another calf. The last few cows are drawing it out. Dad and mom went and had lunch with grandma. Othello welding called Toni and the trailer was done, so Toni and dad went and picked it up after Toni’s meetings. We FINALLY had a foal on Tuesday, a striking black colt, he is possibly a blue roan. He is out of Mocha and by Gunner. Mocha’s foals have coffee names, and Gunner’s foals have Gun names, so to a casual observer his name of, KT Black Rifle, could be confusing. However, we have a local coffee stand called Black Rifle Coffee, hence the gun coffee name that no one will understand except us. Toni is threatening to keep this colt, I told her we have too many that are related, so as of now he is for sale. In typical Mocha foal fashion, he came up to see us when we were checking. Mocha is a favorite mare to everyone that meets her, and her foals are favorites to everyone that buys one, so I am sure all of those people are siding with Toni. We are still talking about a barn name for this handsome colt. After we got done talking to Mocha and petting the colt we went and fed our cripple heifer in the cattails. She came out of the cattails since we took so long, which is good, maybe we can start working her towards the house.

Wednesday Oreo finally calved and had Cookie, or Traci said should be named Thin Mint since it is TINY. It was also Kicker’s birthday on Wednesday, so Toni calls him Kicker’s Cookie. Jaxsen and I decided Jaxsen can show him as a steer next year since he has a lot of hair. It was cold and rainy on Wednesday, Mocha had black rifle up in the hay line. Mom made us a really good butter cake, even thought it was Wednesday. Isidro moved the mower to circle 4, which means they have mowed all the trees they can in 5 and we will have to hand cut the rest which is a big task.

Thursday dad was headed out to go to Topp with Steve to drop off some cows, and saw two mares had foaled. Except one of the mares was open, so Toni ran down. The kids and Dad already had the mares in. Anna had a string in her hand to catch the thief mare and separate the mare from her “baby.” For future reference if you have a mare that is strong and dedicated enough to steal a foal from a seasoned mare, probably don’t use a piece of twine to catch and move her. Toni did use the twine and did get her moved but said that her arm almost got ripped out of the socket. Dad’s comments centered around how great the kids did and how dumb mares are. Goldie had the colt that was stolen. Mom and Toni got nursemate into him and left them locked in. Cleo had a filly that mom and Toni are fighting over. Toni told the filly that they could be best friends forever. The mowing in circle 4 is going a lot faster in the top part. The kids mowed it last spring but it did not get sprayed. Dad also harrowed the pasture during the week. He got the heavy mare pen done, circle 8 and part of 7 this week. Thursday afternoon Mud foaled and we had another black colt on the ranch. This is the first foal out of Highbrow Lil Shadow aka Stetson, so this colt has a pretty cool pedigree. We moved Miss Gen down with Tank so she couldn’t steal another baby. She is an older (ok maybe old is a better word for her) mare so we figure she might need the extra time to get bred.

Friday we pulled CIDRs on the cows. Anna stayed home to help and Toni came down after court. We got through them pretty fast. Friday was a crazy weather day, it was cold, we had snow in the AM, then it warmed up then got cold again. We checked, fed, etc. Anna went in and got the boys from school. Marlo was out to do chores, so she got to see the new babies, pet Queenie Bellini, etc. Stina had a cute mini horse filly by Derringer, Toni claims Stina and her sister Spicy, so she named her KT Blue Eyed Devil. I told her I was not naming the sweet little baby Blue Eyed Devil, so I put down Blue Eyed Dreamer.

Saturday morning the cows got their 2nd shot. We got up and sorted them and ran them through. We had lots of help on Saturday, Ben, Toni, Kaine, Anna and I. Kade was at a shoot somewhere there was lots of snow. He did really good, had a 39 score and was 6th overall. He won a knife. We also fixed a bit of fence one of the Hereford bulls had knocked down trying to get out with the cows that were coming into heat. Anna and Lane had prom Saturday night, so Anna went to Tonis and they did her hair and makeup. They went with Anna’s friends, Brandy and Emilee and Lane’s friends Trey and Travis (who are twins). Leroy was a super creeper in pics. They had a great time.

Sunday morning the kids caught their steers. Sophie came and picked up her Angus steer that she bought from Anna. We took her down to see Baby Blue and Anna showed her some things she needed to get. After lunch we sorted cows and then Mark came and AIed them. Kaine and Jaxsen left at one point to go down and do horse chores. After we got done Toni and I went down to work on The Judge and then go feed and check the mares. The boys stayed and helped get everything turned out of the corral, let their steers go and feed.

Everyone loves cattle sorting AFTER the fact. Then it is funny. Anyone that tries to tell you they haven’t yelled or been yelled at during cattle sorting hasn’t really done it. Last Friday it was Ben, Kaine, Anna, and Toni. Afterwards I asked Kaine how it went. He said his dad didn’t talk to him, Anna yelled at him, and Toni talked to him like he was a kindergartner. I just know that the code words were By, AI, and Hereford, so the only easy sort was the Hereford pen, and there weren’t many in the Hereford pen.

I am not done with the Pomeroy pictures, so still missing Ady, Natalie, Julian, Vanna and Kayla.

Monday was the first official day of spring break and a wind storm. Toni had court in the morning, Anna checked the cows and horses. Anna’s friends came out and spent the day and night with her. Toni brought lunch home for her and the boys. Dad went up and supervised the girls riding, yes in the wind storm. Kade also had to ride in the wind. We made fun of them, but mom and dad pointed out that we did that crap too when we were their age. You can’t keep a good rider down and wind is nothing. Toni let the boys out of building fence, since Freida was colicing and they had to walk her. Toni gave her some immediate response and some Zesterra from Rowdy Berry. Then they walked her and walked her and walked her. For awhile we didn’t think anything was going to work, but we got her through. It is funny, once she was better, she was better and she wanted out of the corral. Too bad for her that she isn’t the boss. She had to stay in the corral until morning just to make sure no relapses.

Tuesday it was still windy, but not wind storm highs. Anna checked and then the kids worked on steers. Anna continued to clip the steers. Toni took Twist over to hand breed to Whitty again, at Holly’s house. Mom had just enough pie left for Toni and I. So we got that pie after we got our chores done which included putting in posts and teasing Stetson to his mares. Stetson is new to us, so he doesn’t get to be left with the mares, but gets to be with them long enough to get his job done, which can be an hour or 2. So far he is doing pretty well and getting things figured out.

Wednesday the kids continued clipping and working on their steers. The wind still blew a little bit, but not as bad. Toni and the kids worked on the 2, 3 and 4 year olds. They all did great. We tried hand breeding Mud again to Stetson, and she is no longer in heat so we turned her out. We are now hand breeding BB to Stetson, she should be coming in and will move Annie down to breed her to Stetson as well. We put a section of wood fence on the next section of fence we are building. Then the boys went to help Anna with the show cattle and Toni and I put two more wood posts in. The men are continuing to work on the circles and get water on.

Thursday the kids finished clipping and packed up the trailer to go to the Garfield County Preview. Toni and the kids worked on the young horses again and had a second day of them really doing great. Once school starts again they will work on a few each night, but with spring break, they decided to work on all of them. Anna really likes both of hers, Kade really loves Stormy and is trying to convince Toni to take Jitter. Kaine likes both of his, but is also helping Toni with the 2 year olds to see if one of those will really connect with him. After work and chores we put up some more fence.

Friday we finished packing up the trailer. I went out and checked and Twiggy had foaled, we are mad she had a colt, we would like to have kept him, beautiful blazed bay colt. Toni and Jaxsen ran to the bank. Toni had settled a case that was headed to trial the next week that hinged on funds being sent on Friday. Then we loaded up and went to Pomeroy. The cattle all unloaded great, especially since three haven’t been anywhere and the other three haven’t been anywhere since November. We washed the cattle when we got there. Lots of people were at the fairgrounds so we had a nice get together in the barn for awhile. Then all 12 of us slept in Kayla’s camper. Kayla, thanks for letting us use your camper.

Saturday the kids showed, and they all did really well. Most made it back to the championship round, in showmanship, market, or both. Kaine was reserve champion intermediate showman. We all had a great time and it was great seeing everyone. The weather was ok for Pomeroy, meaning it only snowed a little and was super windy. 71 head of steers were at the show and 13 heifers, so a tremendous turn-out for the time of year and weather conditions. Of course it was mostly die-hard show kids, so the classes were deep. Then we loaded up and came back from Pomeroy. As we rolled home in an exhausted state, we realized Ben and Dad had done the horse chores. So all we had to do was unpack the cattle, the kids, the vehicles, greet the dogs (because they missed us the most), and do a check on the livestock to make sure all was well. There were some things that we needed to deal with on Sunday, but nothing that really couldn’t wait. I am not even close to done with the pics, so I have not gotten to the Natalie, Ady, Julian, Vanna and Kayla yet, but they were there.

Friday the bulls were fighting through the gate, broke the chain, and got all of the cows mixed together. Since we were leaving we left them until Sunday. So here we are on Sunday in the cold and wind getting the cows in and sorting them. We sorted the heifer calves into one pen and the bulls into the other. After helping us get them in the kids washed their steers. We turned all the cows back out with the proper bulls. We then fixed the fence after. Sunday was long. Probably partly because we were still tired. Really it mostly went well, it just felt like a lot.

It is crazy to think we are already to the middle of April. Foaling has really slowed down, but I think it always feels like we have a wave of foals, then a break, then another wave. We have about 5 mares that are due, so just a waiting game. With the weird weather, it might be best if they hold out for a bit.

We decided to add a two-year-old for sale on our page, a Leroy daughter out of Ro, our Silver Gun daughter. This is a really nice red dun filly. She has tremendous potential, loves people, quick, smart, really a great project for any age. Her pedigree speaks for itself in terms of a listing of great AQHA horses with performance. Jean has been a favorite of the family since she was born. We would like to see her go to a performance type home. We have decided to offer her for sale because we have too many young horses and the kids want to ride what they have already gotten started. Kaine likes Jean, but he wants something bigger. This is a very pretty and feminine typey filly. We are excited to see her reach her full potential.
