Toni and Anna got the new halter breaking group in and took pics of Whitty and Cowy. Whitty and Cowy were supposed to get turned out with the other foals, but they decided to turn them in with the “special” foals. The “special” foals are just the 4 that got weaned first, so not really special as much as just weaned the longest so in their own pen. “7” calved on Monday and had twin bull calves. Last year she had twin heifers. Anna and the dogs checked the cows and grabbed one of the calves. Both calves are small, but have vigor. Kaine and Kade’s Spokane steers also got out through the feed panel, one of the bars broke off, and they went for a walk about so Anna got them back in. Anna told people that Kaine’s steer is wild, but Kaine doesn’t agree. Lets hope Kaine is right. Ben went and got our free standing panels when he got off of work from LDs. LD put hinges on a couple for our gates so we know have some free standing panels with swinging gates off of the one side. We are pretty excited and LD did a fantastic job. If anyone wants any of those big panels, LD and Gwen are getting another load to sell in the spring and have the panels priced competitively.

Tuesday we saw the sun for part of the day. Anna went out into circle 4 and finished pulling out T posts from the old fence we used to have in the middle. Toni worked on Sugar Cookie, Radiant Rifle and Alme and she said they were all awesome. We were a bit nervous about Rad and Alme. Rad is really big, a typical Gunner foal, and was out in the desert so has had less exposure than some, but she was solid. Alme has been our spoiled boy, but was also super solid. That is good news since it is still so muddy we are hesitant to use the donkeys. Toni could lead all three the first day, and Alme and Sugar Cookie started leading like they knew what they were doing within a couple of minutes. Sugar Cookie is our AI baby sired by The Goodbye Blues.

I was home on Wednesday so Anna, Ben and I checked cows. Mom, Anna and I ran to Othello and got a few things, including a shelf for the freezer for Ben to organize the freezer. Toni and I tried out the new dump and put a bale of straw in the round pen, in with Copper and the “special” foals. We took Radiant Rifle, Sugar Cookie and Alme for a walk about. I just led Alme, so Toni made fun of me that she had to do the other two. Yes, because all three were just so hard, that was my sarcastic voice. Because of all the rain we had a puddle that still had quite a bit of water in it so we were leading the foals through the water, standing them in the water, just getting them exposed to anything we could out in the driveway. When we are doing chores there are lots of things to be exposed to- dogs, lots of dogs, Reno the puppy that is already a cow dog, the boys on the 4-Wheeler, loud talking, more dogs. All three of the foals took everything in stride, they were just like whatever. Sugar Cookie didn’t like walking in the water, but Toni worked on her and got her to have some trust, moving freely in the water.
Happy Thanksgiving, Vixen gave Kade a cute clubby x heifer on Thanksgiving, and 139 also calved and had a bull. Terry and Erina came down and we all went to Tonis. We had a great Thanksgiving with friends, family, good food, and laughs. We all ate too much and were thankful for the blessings in our lives. We were missing one of the kids, but otherwise we had a full house. After our big dinner, we managed to go do chores. We took the foals out to walk through mud muddles. Kaine brought Reno down to do chores, and she was very helpful with the foals, still my sarcastic voice. These foals have really been a joy to work with. They tie great, easy to catch, and have just been about perfect.

We had someone out to look at bulls on Friday, so we got them in and sorted them. Just to jump ahead, we also did that Saturday and Sunday, it is good having people come out. We sold three bulls in three days to three repeat buyers. We checked cows tagging calves. Ben and I hauled corn cobs around with the dump trailer to muddy areas. Kaine welded on a gate. Anna cleaned out the barn. Kaine and I hauled corn cobs down to mom and dads Marlo, Kaine and I spread them out. Marlo and I led the three foals through them and they did great. The corn cobs are kind of weird to walk on if you aren’t used to them, they are spongy so they sink down, but they can also roll out from under you, so again, interesting. The corn cobs do help soak up the water and mud, so make the corral a much safer environment overall with all the excess moisture we have been getting. The foals liked Marlo and exhibited no stranger danger at all.

On Saturday we tagged the calves in the heavy heifer pen, including Ben’s No Horn. No Horn is out of a Longhorn cow and an Angus bull which equals no horns. I also like to say that is a waste, but at least he now has one longhorn that has calved so not just a money pit. Kaine and I hauled Boon and Reina to mom and dads, the heavy heifers went into their pen and they did not need that much hay. Boon is already getting really fat and sassy, so going to mom’s is a better spot for them both.

On Sunday we started putting out the freestanding panels we bought from LD Green. We put one with a gate in Sagebug’s pen, one is Hauls pen, and put some straw in both pens. Ben claims Sagebug as “his” stud because Sagebug is so good to deal with and can be left with the bulls all winter. Then we loaded some straw hay into the dump trailer and took the freestanding panels that go down to moms down to moms. Kaine, Ben, dad and I got them up. Toni got down there in time to help Katie and Chad load Sugar Cookie. She is going to go to Pullman for a while and see if she wants to be a barrel horse in a few years. Katie and Alvina have both Cash and Sugar Cookie now. So our barrel bred fillies that we want to keep and also want to see turn cans. We are excited to see how they do. We got some pictures of Ink for a person that had texted requesting new pics. We also got some video of Dancing Bug for a friend that is interested in her. Dancing Bug is a big filly with a big motor, but very smart. Then we haltered the next group, Peaches, Sarge and Buzzy. We dumped the bales out with the foals. It was fully dark by the time we got everything done.

Monday was Kaine’s first summer football game, so Coco, Shea and I went to it. It was fairly warm, Shea fell asleep as soon as we pulled into the parking lot, so Coco and I packed the stroller up the stairs into the stadium. The only shade was at the very top. Shea slept most of the game, and then woke up in a great mood and we shared some watermelon and she played with the toys I brought her from my office. Toni had court in Ritzville, so headed up there for most of the day. Toni and the rest of the kids did chores. We got a feeder set up for Chick, as she is now an orphan. This way she has feed available with milk replacer in it, 24 hours. Except when Cleo knocks it open and eats the feed. She seems to really like to eat the milk replacer. Kade really started to ride Joss because she finally turned 2 so he is working on her a bunch. We brought home Papa Murphy’s for dinner.

On Tuesday Kaine had his second summer game in Royal City, it was a windy day since it is always windy in Royal. The kids washed their steers and heifers to get ready for the show this coming weekend. Kade had an orthodontist appt and Jaxsen elected to hang out with mom. Steve Jarmen brought out a mare to breed to MC and two more donkeys. So now we have 5 donkeys. We also got another outside mare in to breed to Cappy. The 2 young studs have the most outside mares, but that is probably due to their location by the house. Kade put another ride on Joss. Dad and I went to the scrimmage in Royal, it was a lot of fun, there were 8 schools there.

On Wednesday Jag headed to SE Idaho first thing to get a few rides on her. Then Toni and Kade took For in to Sagehill Vet to get Coggins and health for the sale. He did great. It was his first ride alone in the trailer and this colt continues to just really impress us. He is super smart. The one thing we would change is to make him a gelding, that should really make him smart. Toni took Jaxsen’s halter as a leash for her dog, so Jaxsen used a string to catch his steer. Gunz was fine until he got to the barn and Gunz decided he had not finished eating and drug Jaxsen back to the feed bunk. Toni stayed with grandma on Wednesday and I was actually home for chores, no game.

On Thursday Toni got some more videos of Kade riding Joss. She is doing great, very smart, picks things up quickly, agile, she has been a great little mare. She isn’t the biggest in stature, but seems to have a big heart. She also has really good bone and hoof size for her actual size. We think she will make a great breakaway mare. Jaxsen went down to rinse his steers and forgot a halter so caught his steers with string he picked upon the ground. At least he was a problem solver. We also continue to try to pet, handle, love on all the foals at the house. We have some really friendly buggers.
On Friday Kaine had a scrimmage in Connell at 9:30, it was windy and cold, but I was wearing shorts since the kid are on summer break. I am committed to summer no matter what. It went until around noon. The kids clipped and dyed heifers and steers in the afternoon. I checked cows and fixed fence. Then went down to do chores early to go to grandmas. Toni was late due to meetings, so her and Aby fixed fence. We have a couple of fences that need some work. Nothing extreme, just maintenance. And the Sagebug fence needs to be put up every year because we take it down for the winter. Fence, fence, fence, seems to be what we do way too much! We need a fence fairy. So far we haven’t found one, if anyone has one for sale, please let us know.

On Saturday Ben took the three older kids to the UCCA Desert Classic in Hermiston. They all did really well. We had a few class winners and Kaine’s steer, RJ, was Grand Champion Overall steer. At home I was building fence for Sagebug and his mares to come down to circle 3. I checked Sagebug’s pen after the thunder lightening and hail we got. Toni and I did chores with the shags. We took a couple of mares out of MC’s pen. We are trying to get mares cycled out of pens that require feeding and out onto the pasture. There is no real secret to fat happy horses, they just do better on green grass.

Happy Father’s Day. Sunday we did not have the storm but it was still very windy, and we need to spray. So that didn’t get done. After a lunch of steak and baked potatoes, Ben and Kaine worked on Kaine’s pickup, and Anna and I went out and put mineral out. Marlo brought Toni some cats, and then Toni and Marlo went down and messed with the yearlings, pulled some of Lightning’s hair for DNA and got Katana and Colada in, Colada has a cut on her leg that needs doctoring. Kade continued to ride the young horses. It is really a debate which of the two year olds are doing the best, they are all so good. Gucci, out of Blue and by Tank is a favorite, but so are all the others! It is always hard to pick a favorite.

Just a reminder that if you want to show in the AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge you must have a horse bred by an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder. We have been enrolled in the program since 2011 and are the AQHA 2022 Heritage Breeder of the year. Check out our amazing foal and yearling offerings!

Bright and early Monday morning Anna, Ben and McCall headed to Billings Montana for the Nile Cattle Show. They got there and got checked in. Toni had court. Dad and Mom headed to Addy to get Dad’s new side by side, or new to him but used, from Gary and Ruth. Monday was the start of homecoming week at school and Kade participated in the homecoming events at the assembly. Toni and I hooked the three foals to the three donkeys Monday night, Basil got Capone, Rosie got Bailey and Tulip for Mercades. These are three pretty big foals. Capone is the size of a yearling already and the other 2 aren’t small. We are thankful for donkeys. Very thankful. Toni picked Kade up from school to do horse chores and then ran him back in for drivers ed. Kicker was fixing circles so Kaine ran up to do cow chores after he got home from practice.

On Tuesday we turned the circle off and dad drove his new side by side up to the pond and out into the circle. He had fun. At the Nile Anna showed Mini Herefords, the mini-Hereford bull she showed won his division and the heifer got 3rd in her class. She had fun. I saw on Facebook that Kade participated in the homecoming events again. Good job buddy and having good school spirit. Jaxsen had a game, they beat Othello, Jaxsen played great. Mercades did not need to get tied to the donkey on Tuesday, I led her all over one handed while we moved the colts around. Capone was tied to Basil again and Bailey to Rosie. Kade drove after school then had drivers ed. Kaine went up to help with cow chores after he got done with horse chores. Kaine forgot to let the kittens out on Tuesday and they were little devils when we got home.

On Wednesday Mom and Toni went to see grandma, she has moved over to the rehab. Morgan and Tel came to the Nile to watch Anna show Char and hang out with Ben, Anna and McCall. Tel preferred Ben but Morgan would not let him keep him. I did get a text congrats on the grandbaby, how old do you people think I am?? Anna had fun showing the char heifer on Wednesday. I think they were third in their class in the Jr Show, I think third in showmanship and middle of the class in open. They did great, she showed really well and looked really good. Kade’s PVF heifer came on Wednesday over to Connell, Joe and Kade evaluated her at great extent. Toni was given some mixed soft Australian licorice when she took Kade to get his heifer, so she was happy. Kade didn’t do the horse chores since he was picking up his heifer and then had drivers ed, so Kaine did horse chores and then went to help with cow chores. Jaxsen is still just doing water. We tied Bailey to Basil and Capone to Rosie on Wednesday and led Mercades. We then let Basil and Tulip out with the other foals and just left Rosie in for Thursday pulling. Rosie is by far the toughest of the lot, hardest to catch, but the toughest.

Great day at the Nile on Thursday. Anna showed a Gelbvieh heifer from Ledgerwood Gelbvieh, they won their class in the Jr Division and made it back. They were Grand Champion Sr Showman in showmanship. In the open division she was second in her class. Anna also got to show another heifer for Ledgerwood Gelbvieh and a bull, the bull was the Reserve Grand Champion overall bull. In the Angus division Anna’s bred and owned heifer won her division and her bull won his class. In showmanship Kale made it back to the championship round and Anna did really well. I went and had lunch with grandma, I shared a grilled cheese sandwich with her and she had soup. Thursday night Toni and I worked on the foals. Kade did not have drivers ed so he did most of the chores. The foals are really starting to make progress. Tulip wanted to be done. She is kind of turning into a quitter.

Friday Anna and McCall showed at the Nile and Kale Cordill showed his Nile Merit heifer. McCall had Queenie and Baby Cow and Anna showed Blondie and her bull. Queenie got 2nd in her class and Blondie was in the same class and 3rd. Baby Cow was 5th in a deep class. Kale and Berta were 3rd in their class. The bull won his division and got to come back to the championship round. Kale and Berta were 4th Overall in the Nile Merit Program and Reserve Champion in Showmanship. Marlo came and her and Kade did chores. I worked on the foals, Toni had court on Friday, but she got there as we were finishing up and took some pics of the foals. Mom, Marlo, Kade, Jaxsen and I met Dianne in at Kaine’s football game. Kade got to record the film for the team. It was Sr night and we got to see a lot of fiends be honored in Sr night. It was a great game and Connell won.

Happy birthday Jaxsen. On Saturday Kade went hunting and Kaine went with his friends to Tri Cities to play golf before homecoming. Toni and I loaded out Mercades on Saturday, she went home with Juan. Jaxsen wanted to invite friends over for his birthday, so Toni went around and gathered them up. Then Robby and Ed came with daughter Cheynne to get a clubby steer. Then I fixed fence with the dogs, cleaned some stuff up, fed the cows a few old 2 string bales that were left over from shows and hanging around the show shed. Kade got home and did chores early so I could take him down to meet the boys for homecoming. Toni and I took pics of Capone and then finished up chores, which included getting Blaze and Dukey in and haltered. We had to chase the pen around a bit, but we got them. Both were pretty easy to halter. Bailey gets another week. I then ran to Kennewick with Kade and took homecoming pics and dropped him off with the other kids and came home. The boys had a good time at Homecoming. Ben, McCall and Mckenna went to Morgans in Wyoming to pick up the steers at Morgans house. They look really good, we are really happy with them. Then they went to the Angus sale to bid on some heifers but did not get any. Which the trailer was pretty full so maybe for the best, even though we really liked some of Zane Barragree’s heifers in the sale and some of Lacey and Chads from 3C (they donated Anna’s Nile Merit Heifer from last year). McKena flew out of Billings that night home to Kansas. Toni took Jax’s friends home. A few wanted to stay the night but she said she couldn’t deal with it. Our friend Robby said that she read somewhere that raising boys is like raising a pack of squirrels. That seems accurate. 2 boys is ok, more than 2 and you wonder what type of hell life has become.

On Sunday McCall, Ben and Anna headed home with the trailer load, and one heifer of Kelly Cordills that they dropped off. Toni, Kaine and Kade went to Pomeroy to pick up the Spokane steers from Dixons. Both boys took a turn driving with the trailer, they really can’t get too much experience driving with a trailer before they are turned lose on society. Once in Pomeroy, they spent some time with John and Jerry looking through the weaned calves. John Dixon does have some calves left that would work for a fall show if anyone is looking. I worked around the place with the dogs. Everyone kind of got home around the same time. We had to move pens around a bit to get pens for all of the steers and critters we have accumulated. Toni and I worked on group 4, Bailey, Blaze and Duke. All three donkeys had to come back in for a bit. We also put out big bales in the White tractor. I guess that happened this week too, we have sold the White tractor so putting out bales Sunday may have been its last job for KT Ranch. We also got Cog caught, practiced loading him, and put him in a pen at the house for him to leave on Monday to his new home. I weaned Mouse when she came in for grain, so another foal weaned.

We are down to four long yearling colts and one filly. We think they are all pretty good ones and each has a unique trait that sets them apart. The Judge is a big gray colt out of John Hallowell’s PD stud- so Apache Blue Boy on the bottom and Dash for Cash on the top. This colt is made for performance. He is big, strong, smart, and pretty. King Two is a stout shorter colt, clearly made for breakaway, calf roping, healing. He is more reactive, but again, really smart. He is more of a project type, but is going to make a fantastic horse. King Three is a true-blue roan that carries a crème gene. He is EE, so can’t have a red foal. Again, super smart colt. Very fancy, has the right look. Joker is a joy to be around, has the pedigree, and ability. We had originally thought Joker would be our next stallion, but we are going to go a different route. Joker has that potential, or would make a great gelding. Joss is a buckskin filly. She was a later born filly, but is stout, smart, curious, and just a fun filly. She isn’t going to be huge, should mature 14.2 with lots of natural grace. These are all really great foals that we are ready to move before winter.
