If you come to this ranch looking for the “best one”

If you come to this ranch looking for the “best one”, be prepared to look at chestnuts and bays. If you come and tell me you are about resale value and don’t want red or bay, I get it. If you are in the resale game, color sells. That is just a fact of life. But if you come looking for the best foal we have available, we are going to show you them all. We ride bay, we ride chestnut and sorrel. What makes a “best one” isn’t the color, it is the brain, the try, the grit, the confirmation. Color is so far down the list, it isn’t in the equation.  A “best one” can mean many things, but to us it means the best and strongest that we have to offer. The color can just be icing on the cake.

To put it mildly, fair tired is an all kind of different tired!

The week of Aug 19th – Aug 25th was a fun filled week at the fair, it is known around here “The Best Week of Summer,” or by adults as the Longest Week of Summer or depending on how hot it is, the Worst Week of Summer. Anna started college classes Monday, and Ady decided to not go to the Benton Franklin Fair. We felt like we were short a few steers and kids all week. We only took 4 open heifers since last year they decided to make us clean out our beds, we used to take a whole bunch of open cattle. So it was a pretty light week for us really. Monday Kaine, Jaxsen, Toni and I hauled the steers in, Kade and Kicker took Kade’s pickup to B&W to have a gooseneck hitch put in, then Kicker brought Kade over to the fair. Ben and Kicker did all the chores all week, except the horse chores on two days when Toni and I drove home to dr Copper.

Tuesday was Market, Kaine and Kade were showing FFA this year, so they were first, they did a great job. Kade was grand champion in Market and Kaine was Reserve champion. Jaxsen, Julian and Natalie were showing 4H. Natalie and Julian both made it back to the champion round, Jaxsen was 3rd in his class which had 2 phenomenal steers in it. The funny thing is last fall we had some friends ask us to buy them steers for their kids. We bought some super top-notch steers and Toni said- we are going to regret buying these steers. The Market championship round had 3 of the steers that we bought last fall. They are that good. And one of them beat Jaxsen.  Natalie was grand champion 4H. That afternoon the kids went on rides and Toni and I went home to dr Copper and do the horse chores. We got back in time to go to the rodeo and eat dinner.

Wednesday was Fitting and Showing, the kids all did great again. Kaine was Grand Champion FFA in Fitting and Showing and Kade was Reserve champion. It was super cool because during that round the Judge said she kept waiting on one of the boys to make a mistake and they didn’t. She finally chose Kaine due to personal preference because they were both showing that good and their steers were that good. Let me tell you, we were beyond ecstatic to have the boys go back-to-back Grand Reserve/Grand Reserve in reverse. We did get asked if there were more than 2 FFA showmen and yes there were.  Natalie, Julian and Jaxsen all made it back to the championship round, and Natalie was grand champion. The kids all did great showing. Jaxsen’s steer, Gunz, that we raised took such good care of Jax. Some of the steers on both days were a bit much, getting loose, running the ring and steady eddie Gunzy and Jax just stood there and did their thing. Super solid. Wednesday football practice started, so Kaine and Max went to football practice when they got done showing. We walked around the fair for a while, got a massage in the massage chair, got a bundt cake sample, shoes polished. Then did chores and went to the rodeo and dinner.  We had heard rumors the big boys were wandering the fair with girls, but no first hand knowledge on that. Toni and Leslie also went to Craig Morgan and said it was an awesome concert.

On Thursday the kids went around and learned how to show all the animals for the round robin. Aram and Emmett “managed” the round robin kids. Kaine tried to fire Aram but since he didn’t hire Aram, he couldn’t fire him. Aram and Emmett are really good at managing people and it was hysterical to overhear Aram trying to boss Kaine around to get him motivated.  They did a great job. Toni and I went back to do chores right after lunch so we made it back in time for the round robin. All of the beef kids did great, none of them won, and we could not hear the announcer at all from our side of the ring, it was kind like we were the red headed step child (isn’t that the saying??) Our kids all did well though, I am proud of all 4 of them. Then we went to the rodeo and had dinner.

Friday was the sale, Kade, Natalie and Kaine were at the sale of champions at the beginning. Thank you Musser Bros Trucks and Auto, Watts Construction and Wheatland Bank for buying their steers. Then we waited around until last, had lunch, etc. Finally, it was Jaxsen and Julian turn. Ray Poland Construction bought Julians and Les Schwab about Jaxsens. Thak you to all our buyers. Kaine, Max, Keegan and Andrew went to practice on Friday. We went to the rodeo and dinner. Let me tell you, by Friday we were tired. Also, as kind of a fun thing there was a really cool hat booth that had set-up at the fair that had blanks, meaning you get to pick how the hat is shaped. Kade, Kaine, Julian, and Lane all wanted a semi-custom hat and it was really a fun process. Toni bought a pre-formed hat. Super fun to all have new straw hats. Jax got a ball-cap and a sweatshirt because he didn’t pack one. The weather was very moderate this year and it was rainy and windy by Friday.

Saturday was livestock judging, and Toni and Leslie have a good time getting the steer class together and placing them. Toni probably more so than Leslie. It is one of her favorite things. Judging cattle, what is more fun?  The kids all did pretty good, Aram was reserve champion in FFA and the FFA team with our kids was 1st. Natalie, Julian and Jaxsen all placed well in 4H. Kaine was at football so did not judge. Manny reserved tables for the rodeo on Saturday night, so we had great seats and Ben, Kicker, Anna, McCall, Marlo and Lane all came. We had a great time. Saturday night is really the only night we get to relax and enjoy the fair like normal people. Other than eating. We eat fried food all week at the fair. Funnel Cake, Elephant Ears, the big Fry square, etc. Lots of crap food.

Sunday morning we got up and cleaned out the beds, packed up our stuff and came home. We all took a nap when we got home, then did chores and cleaned out the camper.  To put it mildly, fair tired is an all kind of different tired!

We had a great time at the fair. Got to see good friends, help people, see people, and just let the kids enjoy their last week of summer.

Another week down. 3 colts, 3 fillies, a bunch of heavy mares. We are so excited for the foals. We just live in anticipation for what we are going to get next. Which mare is your favorite?

Monday was drive your tractor to school day. Anna is an FFA officer, so she took the flatbed to school so the officers could ride on the flatbed. Kaine drove the flatbed and did not lose anyone, so that was good. Kade rode in a tractor with his friend Cole. Toni had court bright and early. I checked the mares with my binoculars. It was announced that Anna was the District 9 Star Farmer and made the top 4 in WA to compete at State Convention. She was also the Beef Production WA proficiency award winner, so will get to compete at Nationals.

On Tuesday Lightening Bug foaled, she had a beautiful grullo filly by Jackpot. Dad started harrowing on Tuesday, so Toni helped him get the harrow out, and then they fixed it with a calving chain Toni had riding around in her pickup. Then he called her because it broke again, she fixed it with some other random chains she found. Toni and Kade took some pictures of Fancy Like’s belly spot to send to AQHA. Toni and Kade also got some pics of Bellini. Jaxsen went to the Orthodontist on Tuesday, but they did not put his braces in, he now has rubber bank expanders??

No new foals on Wednesday, however Jitter was out in the desert eating grass and made Toni look for her and try to get her in. Jitter likes to crawl through fences so she would rather be a pain in the butt and crawl through a fence than go through a gate. Toni and Kade pulled hair on Fancy Like to send in a DNA test. They also worked on Fancy for awhile.  Since Kade wants her to be a future calf horse they were picking up her feet with a rope and desensitizing her.  Toni had court again. Then she had to head over to stay with Grandma.

Toni hauled Mis Gen, Abs and Reba into Sheena to get preg checked on Thursday, and guess what, all 3 are still pregnant!! She hauled Voodoo in to get Coggins Tested, we are sending her to Moses Lake. And Bellini went to for Sheena to work on her eye.  There is actually a really good fb post on Bellini’s eye. Bellini lacerated her eye and Sheena did an experimental surgery to try to save the eye. So far so good. And Bellini is a good filly. She has really only been loaded to go to the vet and come home, but continues to not fight us. She does have some issues with liking people. She likes who she likes and that is it. The good news for her is that Sheena cleared her to be turned back out with the other yearlings when she got home so no longer living in solitary confinement. The bad news is we have some tough yearlings that she is going to have to learn to live with. But it is good for her. Dad and Kaine took Kaine’s pickup to a guy in Eltopia to work on. Anna worked on her show heifers and steers. Kade also worked on his horse Stormy. Jaxsen had FFA practice after school and dad picked him up.

Happy Friday. Kaine went to Tri Cities for a welding competition with FFA, he said they did not win, they did not do as good of a job as they did with the fishing statue, however, he did find out this week that they got second, so it was not as bad as he thought. Ben was home on Friday and checked, no new foals. Kade has been riding Stormy as many nights as he can to get her ready to start roping on her. He is also still riding Mauney and also plans to start breakaway roping on Mooney. The are both black mares with two hind socks so it is hard to tell which one he is riding unless you can see their face. Both have a really good handle and a level head. I went and stayed with grandma on Friday night. Marlo helped Toni with chores.

Anna checked the horses early Saturday and Mocha had a magnificent colt that we are calling Laroy after his dad. And Rosie B had a stunning buckskin filly by Gunner. Anna washed her heifers and steers early, then we headed out and checked the cows in the morning. Dad took Kade to a trap competition with his new gun. He won the buddy shoot with Conrad and did really well on the first round. At noon we headed to Uncle Joe’s 70th birthday and the Feb-May birthday party. We all had a great time. We got to see some friends we haven’t seen in a while, some years. It was great to see the support for Uncle Joe and help him celebrate making it to 70. There have been times we have all questioned his longevity. Haha. It was also fun to get Grandma out to the party to see everyone. We came home and did chores and moved horses around. We are still working on getting studs put out mares out, and just keeping everything moving forward.

Sunday Kade had some people coming out to look at Mauney. They liked her, but Kade wasn’t willing to budge on the price as much as they wanted. Anna and Kade were good kids and washed their heifers and steers. Kaine and Jaxsen are well you know, Kaine and Jaxsen. Kaine at least got his tied up. Toni and I got the circle 5 mares in and moved the ones out that needed to go out with studs. We haven’t turned Gunner out into his big pasture yet because not enough mares have foaled so Playin got to stay in Circle 5 and continue to be a menace. We did get her and her mother into the corral so we could pet on her and make her stand still. We also got Opal in to take to MC. Lots of moving of horses. Bug got to go out across the landbridge to his desert ground with his 2 colts and their mothers.  Kade practiced his tie down skills and Tank watched. When Kade got his new gun and was shooting Tank came to the closest corner to watch Kade shoot. Either Tank likes Kade or he is just a nosey bugger.  Since Tank likes everyone it is probably both.

Another week down. 3 colts, 3 fillies, a bunch of heavy mares. We are so excited for the foals. We just live in anticipation for what we are going to get next. Which mare is your favorite?

As of Sunday we have bulls turned out and our AI program for the cows is completed.

Another Monday after a short weekend. Toni had court all day, in two different locations. But luckily it is light enough now that Anna can check before school. The weather was nice on Monday. No new foals, no new calves. Toni texted the boys to do her chores and needed a confirmed receipt of text after the last time. Kade confirmed it and fed the babies and the olds. Then he rode Mooney around, she is a nice mare and meets him at the gate.

On Tuesday Toni had court again, but had time to check in the morning first. The sun was shining and she reported that the tractors were hitting the field. Already?? Come on guys, it is February, we just got to use all the corn stalks the beginning on this month. Take her down a notch. We bid on some bale spears for the Skid Steer in the Musser Bros auction. Jaxsen had FFA practice after school, dad went and picked him up after. Toni worked on Smo and Jexy and asked if I had secretly halter broke them when they were in Las Vegas. I said of course I did. Coffey Refrigeration came out and looked at the outdoor freezer on Tuesday. Thank you Coffey, you were the ONLY people that would come out and look at it out of the 14 people Ben called (14 might be a slight exaggeration). We do not live that far out of town. And Happy 2nd birthday to our Shea Bug.

Guess what I saw Wednesday on my way to work?? Goldie foaled. Fancy colt by Sagebug. Mom and I were disappointed it was not a filly we could name Shea Bug since Shea’s birthday was Tuesday and he could have been born in the night. Goldie is claimed by Ben and so is Sagebug so we are all waiting on Ben to name “his” colt.  Sonny got out and Scarlett caught him, Sonny is the mini colt we have left from last year. We moved Derringer up with the mares so Sonny had to go down to the barn and he is not super happy about it. Toni was in meetings/calls all day. Kade had agronomy practice. Kaine fed the horses and did not notice Dude colicing. Kade came down to ride Mauny, and noticed he was down and go him up, but did not think about him colicing. When Toni got down there she was not happy with them. Toni and Kade were walking him and had gotten immediate response down him and Zesterra. We got Dude through it but it was pretty stressful there for a bit. Toni went and spent the night with grandma, mom had been there during the day. Mom checked Dude every few hrs and I was on call. Thomassans came down and picked out a couple of Hereford steers. They were picking them up later in the week, so Ben and Anna put their EID tags in. The boys helped feed grain since Anna was selling steers.

Toni checked in the morning, nothing new. Dude was still fine.  All of the kids except Kaine had FFA practice after school. So he did chores and when the other kids got home they helped him. Toni and I got Mage and Duke in and got them ready to leave the next day. Ben and Anna got the cows in to get ready to sort on Friday.  We are also still working on Smo and Jexy. Even though they are pretty much perfect, they still get their week of halter breaking, need it or not. But seriously they are pretty much perfect. Smo does not like her feet picked up and that is the only issue with her. Jexy doesn’t like it when you put a halter on him, he is more of a leader than a follower. As Toni wants to keep him as a stud prospect we need to get him beyond that mentality. Toni also wants Smo off of the for sale page. She is priced at $15,000.00 so I think it is pretty safe. Toni is trying to claim Smo as her next horse. I also claim her so we will see.

On Friday Ben, Toni, Marlo and Anna sorted cows, pulled CIDRs and then semen tested bulls.  In addition, Andy and Ilene came and picked up Duke and Mage. Duke and Mage really hadn’t loaded before so they were a touch resistant to load but so smart. They didn’t freak out at all just didn’t think they could get their feet picked up that far. Toni put a rope around Duke’s front foot and got him to step up. They ended up having to pull both of Duke’s front feet in to get him to load. Mage they only pulled one front foot up then he jumped in. But Mage had been loaded with his mom before so he kind of knew about it.  We are excited for Andy and Ilene. Both of those colts would have been keepers if they had been fillies. But I think we say that a lot about the foals. We pretty much like them all. Duke we may have spoiled a tiny bit. So they had a busy day. Coffey Refrigeration came out and worked on fixing the freezer. We continued working on the Smo and Jexy that night. Mom went to grandmas. Dad went to Tri Cities and brought me a coffee at work.

On Saturday we got our second foal- Ro had a filly by Gunner. We are super excited about her. We got up early Saturday and gave the cows their 2nd day shot to be ready to AI on Sunday. Then Anna and dad took the two Charolais cows to Alan’s to get bred, one of the cows is Alan’s, so it is not coming back. Kade went to trap and did really good, then him and Kicker went and picked up a tractor we bought for dad.  It is an older Ford tractor. Dad didn’t know about it. It was pretty fun when Kicker drove in the driveway and surprised Dad with the tractor. Dad likes a good surprise.  Lane came out and Anna, Lane and I checked cows. Ben and Kaine worked on Ben’s pickup, changing the leaf spring. Anna, Lane and I caught Shorty and loaded her and the two Hereford cows and took them to moms. Then Kaine and I hauled grass bales down. Toni came down and we worked on Smo and Jexy and dad and Kaine fed down the driveway. I stayed with grandma on Saturday night.

Saturday night the cows broke the water line. So Sunday morning early Ben and Anna started to fix it and then went to Othello to get the parts. Leslie loaded up lot 1 for me to bring home, so I turned him out at mom and dads on my way by (we are calling him Uno). Toni had also turned Libby out on that side of the road, and she was happy to have bovine friends. Toni and Kade hauled Stormy and Electra down to ride and Kaine caught Ol Kevin. I guess we went from Big Kev to Ol Kevin. Kaine watches too much Dale Brisby. His cat is named Ol Son and it is a girl cat. We sorted cows to AI and then Kaine and Kade rode out and got 034, the bull in. He was limping so the men doctored his foot for foot rot. Mark and Mike came out and we AIed cows. Then Toni and I went down and turned Smo and Jexy out after one last day of working on them. The boys fed and then Kade rode Friday, Toni is switching Electra for Friday so Kade made sure he could ride her as well. Anna washed her show steers and heifers that night when we got done. Kaine finished fixing the leaf spring on Ben’s pickup.  Toni put Electra in with Tank when they got home and moved Friday up to her house. Electra is decent to ride but she is way too mothered up to Stormy. Stormy is great. Both are out of Double so we think they are great. Stormy was awesome at my house on Sunday. That was only the second time she has been hauled somewhere to be ridden. Kade has done a good job with her, but she is a good horse.

As of Sunday we have bulls turned out and our AI program for the cows is completed. We are really excited about the new bulls we used for the program as well as the bulls that have such great calves on the ground that we are using them again. This calf crop is truly exceptional and we can’t wait to see how they grow. With the weather finally starting to turn nice it has been nothing but a trial on our patience to wait for the mares to foal. We have quite a few on our watch list. Let me assure you, checking them 10 times per day does not make them foal any faster!

Also a quick reminder for those that don’t know, the facebook page got hacked so we have a new FB page also under KT Ranch. It is a personal page so you have to friend request.
