Jaxsen and Kaine are diving into summer football, with practices lined up throughout the week and a jamboree scheduled for Friday, keeping them busy and active. Meanwhile, Kade and Toni are gearing up for the Simmental Regionals in just a week and a half, so they’re busy organizing travel documents, checking tires, and getting oil changes done to ensure everything runs smoothly. Kade has also been busy relocating the round pen from its winter spot, where we were halter breaking, to a more stable area, and he’s started working with the two-year-olds. Anna has taken on the task of replacing the old fiberglass posts with sturdy metal T posts, enhancing the durability of our fencing. Additionally, she and Kaine have been out using the skid steer to cut down Russian Olive trees, tackling the overgrowth and making the property look much better.

This week has been sweltering we are reaching triple digits. Kade and I have found ourselves in a bit of a disagreement over Gucci, a three-year-old horse sired by Tank and out of Blue, which Kade has been training. He has claiming Remi, I’ve claimed SJ as “mine,” but it seems we’ve come to a consensus that Gucci might actually suit me better. However, Kade also thinks she will be a good rope horse, however, maybe too lazy. Kade has been lending a hand to Anna with her own three-year-old, Gunny. She worked with Gunny last year, but now it’s time for her to start riding Gunny out, so Kade has been stepping in during the day to help her out. On top of that, Anna is juggling a part-time job with Toni this summer, where she’s been tackling legal work. She’s managed to get Toni all caught up on filing, which means she can now shift her focus to more engaging tasks. Meanwhile, I’m not quite sure what Jaxsen occupies his time with, but I keep reminding him that his steers won’t halter break themselves, and they’re only going to get more challenging as they grow. To add to the chaos, our HVAC system flooded the office, so Anna and Kaine have been busy cleaning up the mess and tearing out the carpet. Thankfully, our friend Hector has a carpet guy lined up, and he’s scheduled to come on Friday to replace the flooring.

On Wednesday July the donkey colt assisted in moving water The sweltering heat of the week had made him somewhat lazy, causing him to neglect his usual responsibilities. However, on this particular day, he seemed to regain his enthusiasm and decided it was time to pitch in once more. He also decided it was great fun to chase Toni’s dog Abby. Ben chased water all week and fixed circles.
On Thursday, our friends Steve and Louis came over to visit and check out all the adorable foals. They hadn’t had the chance to meet MC yet, and it had been ages since they last saw Tank, who was just a colt back then. We spent a delightful afternoon reminiscing and catching up on each other’s lives. After we wrapped up our visit, Toni took care of the chores while I headed over to spend some quality time with Grandma.

On Friday, Dad and Toni made the trip to Spokane to pick up Gina, our last mare at Allies. While they were there, they also met up with Denise, they took Kenna and Blondie. Kenna and Blondie went with Denise to their new home in Montana. We’re thrilled to share that Gina is confirmed in foal to Brother Jackson, which has us all buzzing with excitement. Later that afternoon, we headed to Royal City for the football jamboree, while Anna and Kade stayed back to handle the chores at home. I have to say, the boys played exceptionally well! They faced off against Moses Lake, a much larger school, Ephrata, which is just one classification above us, and Okanagan, who competes in a different division altogether. It was a special day for Jaxsen, as it marked his first game as a high school player, while for Kaine, it was bittersweet since it was his last chance to play spring ball before he becomes a senior next year.

On Saturday, Ben took the three older kids to Hermiston for the UCCA Desert Classic, and they all performed exceptionally well. Each of their four heifers advanced to the championship round, with Short Bread, Penelope, and Baby Jewel winning their respective classes, while Hazel secured a commendable second place. In the championship round, Baby Jewel was crowned the overall heifer champion, and Penelope finished in third place overall. Kade also had a strong showing, finishing third in his class with his steer, while Kaine earned the title of reserve champion. Our Juju who was named grand champion. All three kids made it to the championship round in showmanship, showcasing their hard work and dedication. Back at home, Toni and I were busy as well; we shipped out a cow and her calf, carefully sorting through the herd to reunite a mother who had gotten separated from her young one. We also managed to get Gunner’s pen in, pulling him out and transporting a few of his mares to the house while letting the rest out into the desert. Toni took the time to chop down a thistle, and then we wrapped up the day with our usual chores, feeling accomplished after a busy but rewarding day.

Happy Father’s Day! We gathered in Washtucna at Sonny’s for a delightful lunch with Sherri, Berry, and Jeanie. The atmosphere was lively, and we all enjoyed each other’s company, sharing stories and laughter. After our meal, we returned home where Toni and Kade snapped some pictures of North to send out. Meanwhile, Jaxsen and I got busy putting out grass bales, ensuring the animals had plenty to munch on. Kaine and Anna dove right into their cattle chores, working diligently to keep everything running smoothly. It was a fulfilling day filled with family, fun, and a bit of hard work.

Minnie had another fancy palomino filly by Dude on Monday. An outside mare showed up Monday to breed to Cappy, so we hauled her out there. She immediately got out, he is in a hot fence in the middle of the wheat, we put her back and she is on her last chance. But she has stayed in so far since then, knock on wood. So maybe she was surprised by it?? She was also in heat. Sandy and Ashley also came out on Monday and Sandy put a deposit on her two foals. Toni got lots of pictures as they went from one end of the ranch to the other to see the foals. The kids are busy working on their steers and heifers to go to Wheatland this weekend.

Star had a chestnut filly on Tuesday by MC. Anna and mom took the 5 puppies to the vet for shots. Cricket has been living at moms, since she is mom’s, and apparently the other 4 did not miss her, and were not happy to see her, especially not Trixie. Anna helped Kade record his video for FFA Officer on Tuesday.

Kaine had a sports physical Wednesday morning, so he ran my half ton work pickup, it is not going into forward, into see Dewey in Othello to see how much it would cost to fix it. The Brother Jackson semen showed up Wednesday, so hopefully Gina will be bred and come home from Allies. Reba was bred a few days ago. Kade and Toni got all of the colts West Nile vaccinated and wormed Wednesday. Pine got sorted off to go by himself, he is going to Ellenburg to be with Tylar and Dillion. They are taking him through Moses Lake/Central WA Livestock at the catalog horse sale for us. Toni and I got some videos and pics of Alotta, and played with the yearling fillies for a bit.

On Thursday dad, mom and Anna took a load of Anna’s stuff up to Moscow to her house up there, and got the keys to the house. Mom and dad said it was a lot of walking up and down stairs. Toni went to Evie’s Preschool graduation, and then brought her home to play with the horses. They wormed and West Niled the fillies in the afternoon. And got some new pics of some of them. Jaxsen helpedish as well. Evie really enjoyed helping and is good and handing what a person needs. All the fillies were great to work on. Toni still wants to keep them all.

On Friday Anna and dad went and got my pick up Deweys. They also got Costco. Steve Jarmin brought his mare out to breed. Toni met Dillion and Ty in Royal City with Pine, and picked up a donkey for our neighbor. This is a pet donkey, not a halter breaking donkey. Cousins Linda and Patricia came Friday late afternoon. I went to Grandma’s Friday night but everyone else went to Toni’s house for family dinner.

Ben and the three older kids headed to the Wheatland Jackpot first thing Saturday morning. Mom, dad, Linda, Patricia and I followed up at a reasonable hour. Toni, Jaxsen and Skip moved horses all day. Kicker chased water. The show was good. All our Angus heifers won their class and made it back to the championship round. Anna made it back in showmanship. Aubrey went with them and I think everyone had a great time?? Toni, Jaxsen, and Skip spent way more time moving horses than they had planned. They ended up having to catch Minnie and Star out on the 70 acre field and lead them to the corral. Both the little fillies loaded really well. They also had to get the two of the outside mares from Cappy’s pen and take to the corral for pickup on Sunday. We then had another family dinner at Toni’s so everyone could have a good visit.

On Sunday Big Kevin went to live with the Palmer kid for a while, however, they raise pigs and it sounds like Kevin is not a big fan. Kade and Anna took 4 heifers to preg check and the show cattle to Connell for Jai to do Health papers to go to Desert Storm. Kaine went with his friend Danny to Pasco to pick up a motorcycle. We had some friends come out to borrow Kevin, so loaded him out. Toni and Patricia went looking for eagles nests and beaver huts. Driving and walking around, seeing what there is to see. They went to all the most isolated places on the ranch. Patricia is an avid bird watcher and likes the nature hikes. Jaxsen and I took 2 of the donkey to Whitneys to eat weeds. Ben was cutting trees with the skidsteer. Patricia and I hauled some bales down and put them out with the dump. Kade road Roanie around and got him ready for people to see. We had Skips birthday party that night at Tonis.

Revel foaled Monday, nice red dun roan colt by Cappy. Ashley and Sandy came and got Spark Monday morning and looked at Izzy’s colt, KT Captain Starlight, that is by Midnight Kat DR. Nice brown colt. Izzy would like to be turned out, so she was super great. They looked at most of the foals because Ashley and Sandy are still shopping. The boys worked on their Spokane steers and Kade worked on his Nile heifer and his Simmental heifer.

Tuesday Ellie had a nice blue roan filly by Gunner. When Toni went to look at it, she did not notice her dogs had followed her out of the pickup, and Rosie B, who gets dogs, about ran her over chasing the dogs. So then Ellie and the filly took off, so she did not get any good pics. The weather was super nice and it felt like spring. Kade made a cool bridle rack in welding with the plasma cutter. We lost Huckleberry’s filly on Tuesday. She was fine and then she wasn’t. We assume she didn’t get colostrum. Mom noticed the filly was down, called Toni and they started trying to get her saved. Kade was a big help but in the end it wasn’t enough. When things like that happen with a mare on her first foal, especially when the foal goes down around day 3, we give the next foal colostrum just to be safe. The reality is that we can’t control everything, but we try to manage the things we can control. There could have been any number of things wrong with the filly, things we can’t diagnose or see. We just have to do our best, and many times our best isn’t good enough. Everyone in the livestock industry will tell you the same thing, it isn’t for the faint of heart.

Wednesday was Toni and Kicker’s 20 year anniversary, so they went on a short vacation for a few days. Ben took our last Hereford bull to Wilbur to Wagners. We only have a handful of Angus bulls left for sale. Marlo came and stayed with the boys. Marlo and Kade did most of the horse chores, I just had to feed the old mares when I got there and go check. So I helped Ben move the skidsteer to the next circle to chop more Russian Olive Trees and we put the bulls back in their pen. They got the hot fence down and went on a walk about.

Zoey foaled on Thursday, a nice palomino Filly and Twiggy had a fancy chestnut filly, both by Dude. Kaine took the puppies to Sagehill Vet to get their first shots. Puppies were tired after a long day. Anna and Lane came down for the weekend.

Kade went to Wenatchee for state trap, good luck kids. Toni and Kicker were meeting them there from their anniversary vacation. Anna and Lane worked around the ranch, fixing fence, etc on Friday. We had an outside mare get dropped off on Friday, I went to grandmas so Anna showed them around and showed them the studs. The mare has a cute colt at her side by John Grey’s son of Gunner. They picked Cappy to put her with, and Huckleberry must have known she was his aunt, she followed them around.

Saturday was the 2nd day of trap shooting state. We had some rain first thing in the morning, then the wind came up later. Jaxsen and Kaine worked on their steers. Anna and Lane continued fixing fence. Ben was running around getting the circles running. I checked the horses and cows, then moved the yearling colts, MC’s pen and Cappy’s pen. After lunch Jaxsen helped me get the mares in and we ran the 3 going with Gunner across the top of circle 5, Lane and Anna helped us with them, then we hauled Zoey out with Sagebug and Twiggy down to Tank.

Happy Easter. Meachams went to Moses Lake. Hammers came to Connell. Mom, Erina and I went out and checked foals between dinner and dessert. Anna and Lane headed back to college. We all did chores. Irish was waxed up all day but never did give us an Easter foal. This is one of the first years we haven’t had an easter foal in a long time. Last year we had Peeps and Copper on Easter, Marlo gets to name the Easter foals since her birthday is in September, so we are not foaling in September. It is probably for the best we didn’t get an Easter foal. The Easter names are pretty used up. One year I think we just named the foal Easter. But with Marlo naming them, maybe they will be freshened up.

It was a beautiful Spring week. We had some ups and downs but overall the week was net positive. Easter is a great reminder of sacrifice along with forgiveness, so a perfect end to the week. We were able to spend Easter with our family, and that in itself is a blessing.

We rolled in late Sunday from Reno, so Monday was a rest day, then Anna headed to Moscow for school, the boys started back working on their Spokane steers and I started getting Sagebug fence back up. Toni started catching up on her attorney work that had been neglected while we were gone. The men were at work, so where they normally are on a Monday. We checked horses, etc. I got to see the three born while I was gone. I am kind of disappointed there were not more born while I was gone. We got all of our normal stuff done Monday night.

The boys are on spring break. The big two worked on their steers and heifers. Kade then went to Eltopia with Roanie to show him. Kaine and the boys’ friend Cyson went to Soap Lake with the show heifers to get their feet trimmed. They also met Kat’s parents with some stuff she forgot in our trailer, and she took the pickup keys home with her. No new foals on Tuesday.

On Wednesday the boys worked on their steers and heifers again, and then went down and worked on Sagebug’s pen some more. Then Kade had Trap shooting practice so he went to that. Mocha foaled on Tuesday, fancy bay filly by Tank. Dad had pre-named her/it Grande so she came out big, but gentle like a normal Mocha foal. We loved her on sight. We have so many heavy mares it isn’t even funny. We sat out and played with the puppies Wednesday night, Tipsy does a really good job playing with them. She is still a big puppy.

On Thursday Pinky foaled, a nice bay roan filly by Gunner. We received a picture of King with his hair all braided to one side. He looks happy, mom is happy she got to see King. She still isn’t happy we sold him, but it did allow us to buy MC. We needed to bring in a stud that wasn’t related to anything. We got our mares all situated to head up to Allie’s for Friday. The weather has been ok for Spring. The boys have really had to put in the work to get their steers ready. For some reason this year a bunch of the Angus shows are scheduled in the spring before school is out. So instead of having time to get the Spokane steers ready, it has been a bit hectic.

Friday Dad, Skip and Toni took Cammie, Reba and Gina to Allie’s to get AIed. Jitter Bug foaled, a big grullo colt by MC, Anna and the boys went out and got her. The colt was big enough there were some minor issues. Luckily BB was out with Jitter Bug so she got the colt licked off, but she is ready to have her own foal so Jitter Bug got to get moved into the dog pen at mom’s. Jitter loved the colt once she realized it was hers. For everyone that doesn’t remember, last year Jitter Bug raised Peanut’s filly, Hurricane, and Peanut raised Jitter’s colt Alme. Toni needed some trotting videos of Wild, so her, mom and Kade got videos and pics when Toni got back. Marlo was out to do chores and pet the foals on Friday. I guess she hadn’t petted any of the foals yet this year so we remedied that on Friday. Big E loves to be petted and scratched.

Mom had a surprise Saturday, May the donkey foaled, we have had her for 11 months and were not told she was in with the jack before we got her. I literally had said to Toni the day before that May looks pregnant, so Toni looked up how long we had had her to see if she could be. He is a cute jack named July. June is upset that she is not the apple of May’s eye anymore. BB also had a nice buckskin filly on Saturday by MC. Ben got the tree shear hooked back up to the skisteer and started shearing trees. Toni and Anna both used it as well. Kaine, Kade and Jaxsen worked on their steers. Anna worked on her cow calf pair and Cookie’s sister to go to Ellensburg. We finished Sagebug’s pen and locked the mares back on this side of the lake. They are not thrilled. We moved Peanut down there as well. We put Sally and CanCan in with Cappy. Mocha in with Tank. Pinky is locked in a pen to go and get AIed. We brought all of the mares into Circle 5, only 25 left down there to foal. It will be easier to check them in a much smaller pen.

Nelli had a fancy blaze fancy buckskin on Sunday by MC. Kaine and Kade took the two Hereford bulls to Connell to get their horns turned. Uncle Joe was kind enough to show the boys how he cuts them so that the horns go the right direction. They helped him with 20 of his bulls, so the boys should be able to do it the next time we have some big horned bulls that need trimmed up. We turned Sagebug out with his mares. We had people out looking at bulls. Barb and Phina came out and looked at foals and yearlings. Abs and Mr Pickles, another donkey, came on Sunday from Tina’s house. We also started supplementing July the baby Jack. He just wasn’t looking good. Lots of fence built over the weekend and lots more to build/fix. We are ready to get studs out of the corral and out on grass.

Are we in love with the 2025 foal crop? Of course we are. Including July. We are about 1/3 done foaling and couldn’t be happier with what we have on the ground. Feel free to come look!

Everyone except me was home Monday, so a lot got done. Toni, Kade and Jaxsen put some poles up between Cappy and MC that had been knocked down and then got some pics of Spark, Cappy, and MC. MC is looking good. So is Cappy. They also took pics of Ink as he was leaving for his new home the next day. He really hadn’t been loaded much so they did some loading practice. Toni and Jaxsen hauled Ink up to my house to get loaded out first thing on Tuesday. Ink didn’t unload very well but other than that did a great job, especially for his first trip on his own. He is a very intelligent colt. Ben, Anna and Kaine got the bulls in to get the last of the bred heifers out. They built a second nursery pen, since the first one was full with the jersey, Goldie, her 4 nurse calves and a 2 year old cow with her sick calf. Kaine and Kade tied up their steers and Kade tied up his Nile heifer. No new calves on Monday, but it was 17 degrees in the morning, so that was good.

Toni loaded Ink out first think Tuesday morning. The hauler was 30 minutes early, Ink jumped right in, so the hauler was loaded and gone before he was even supposed to be there. We have used this hauler many times and they are extremely reliable. The boys went hunting with their friends, so Toni just had Jaxsen to help her. The boys did not have school on Tuesday for grade prep or something. After they got back they caught their steers and heifers. Kade was not feeling great but worked on Gucci to get some fresh air. She was not ready to get back in the swing of things from being off all winter, she felt it was still winter. However, she did really good and is a really nice coming 3 year old. She is still one of our top picks.

On Wednesday Toni checked and petted some of the new calves. She tried to cause drama and told Kade we were taking Queen back. I told Kade he was fine, we were not taking his heifer back. He traded her for a different heifer. Queen was his 2024 show heifer and is about to calve. Ben came home at noon and Ben and Hank semen and trich tested a bull. Toni sent Ben a Tik Tok that if he was a real cowboy he would give a bull a wet willy. So he gave the bull calf that was born a wet willy and said he is a cowboy. See video below. Toni did not need to tie Alotta to June on Wednesday, she was great. Toni stayed with grandma Wednesday night.
On Thursday Toni checked, and the bulls were in the heavy heifer pen again. Just two this time. Queen had calved so Toni had to go and pet it. And lead her pet, the Wee Lord, around. I have great employees at work. They gave me flowers, a bracelet with KT engraved in it, a pinata, donuts, and we had lunch for my birthday (which is really on Friday but that is my day off). I felt appreciated. Billy from TLC came and butchered a steer that we had sold. I stayed with grandma on Thursday.

On Friday I got home from grandmas and checked the cows. Three calves were born on my birthday, I named the first two Steveo and Danno, from Hawaii 5-0. Toni, mom and I went to the Brunswick for lunch, I had not been there in a while and it was really good. I came home and Kaine and I checked the cows again. He got out and petted Steveo and Steveo’s mom, 4I, one of his show heifers. Then Kaine and I fed the cows. Kade, Marlo and Toni all rode Blueberry Friday night, we had someone coming to look at her on Saturday. She did great. Anna and Lane got home and Ben brought Checos home for dinner.

On Saturday we went out and checked cows, no new calves on Saturday. Anna, Lane and I went and got pics of the bulls, or a couple pics of the bulls, they were in the Russian Olive trees. We tagged calves, Ben, Lane and Kaine tagged Ben’s crazy long horn’s calf. Anna and I refused to assist. Kaine, Lane and Anna moved the minis up the hill, they were bothering the heifers. Toni and I did a new video of Opal. We had buyers out that ended up buying Blueberry and taking her home. They were a really good fit for Blueberry so we are excited to for them. Kade rode Jag and continued to work on the horses. We also had a buyer come out and look at the heifers and picked five of the reg heifers to buy.
On Sunday Anna and I checked, Ben was cooking for everyone to come down for lunch, Kaine was cleaning the house and Lane was doing home work. We got some new pics of calves, some pics of some eagles and some pics of heifers. Terry and Erina came down for my birthday party. We had bang bang shrimp and chicken, brisket, baked potatoes, rolls, strawberry trifle, caramel cheesecake and a layered cookie. It was all great. Then Jaxsen and I put out grass bales. Jaxsen and Toni got in the yearling colts, while I was getting the bales loaded by Ben, and Toni haltered Buzzy and Fancy Gun and left them in to work with again. Kade took his pickup to get looked at, then I helped him with his chores. Kaine and the men did the cow chores.

The ground has frozen, but the weather has remained decently pleasant. It has been really fun to have this many groups of people out to look at the ranch. Normally the winters are so bitterly cold that no one wants to come see us, but this winter, at least so far, has been pretty mild. If you are in the market for a horse, come out and tour the ranch before the weather turns bad. Same with bulls and heifers, we have a really good selection of livestock to chose from.
