Monday we woke up to freezing fog, but the kids did not have school, teacher in service day, so we did not have to worry about them driving in it. Monday was my actual birthday, again, thank you everyone for all of the birthday wishes. I had a work meeting in Othello, we were going to go out to the Brunswick for lunch after, it was closed, so we went over to Checos, closed, went to Ironworks, I guess the third time is the charm, finally found something open. Mom made apple fritters and we had left over desserts from Sunday. So we had lots of desserts again on Monday. Ben made steak for dinner, it was a great day.

Tuesday Toni and the dogs checked cows. Murtaugh likes to jump in and help her. Jaxsen had a game which was supposed to start at 4. Toni was running on time, which Dad considers late, so Dad was sitting in the drivers seat of Toni’s car when Toni got ready to go. So Dad drove Toni and Jaxsen to the game. It was Connell vs Connell and the first game for the school league. Jax made some plays. He is getting better. The kids did chores, they helped with horse and then cow chores. The weather is still really foggy and gray.

Wednesday we had freezing fog again. The fog was not as thick as it has been, so I think people forgot it could still be freezing, there were two cars in the ditch on my way to work. Toni had a mediation all day on Wednesday, so Anna checked cows before she left, Zora, Jaxsen’s old show heifer, had just calved so she asked dad to go back and check to make sure she didn’t have twins. She had moved and it took him a while to find her, but no twins. The three older kids went and helped Ben with cow chores after they got done with horse chores. I took Jaxsen home with me when I got home, after eating some lemon poppyseed muffins that mom had made, they were so good. Toni was waiting for us when we got there. Toni’s case did not settle.

Thursday morning was nice, crisp and clear. No new calves, but checking actually went ok with the lack of fog. Toni testified on behalf of the WCA in support of the Stock Water Bill. There were 21 people testifying on the bill, most in favor. It is a really good bill that helps support ag, but it probably won’t make it into law. Because the weather was good on Thursday we started planning out the new fence between circles 7 and 8. Dad called around and got the no climb horse fence bought. Now we just need to go get it and start putting posts in. The ground is still frozen, so we really can’t do much until it thaws. Jaxsen had basketball in Mesa, so Dad and Toni went to that game as well, the team played really well.

Friday mom made jelly filled donuts, they were really good. Toni bought a couple of new office chairs on the Musser Brothers Estate auction website. Some pretty cool leather ones. They were only $100 each. Marlo came and helped do chores. We are still working on Hottie’s leg every night. Marlo thought it looked like the sarcoid is smaller. Anna went to watch her friend Brandi’s basketball game, and then her friend Josie came home with her and spent the night.

Saturday Anna and I took T021 to Connell to get semen tested and brand inspected. Ben and Kaine went out got the Braford cow in, she always jumps out to calve down by the lake. The Meachams went to Tri Cities for a basketball tournament. After Anna and I got back we went out and got new pictures of the bulls. Next Anna went and caught her horse and we moved the steers and heifers around so the Spokane steers will be easier to catch. Then Kaine and I went and did the horse chores and Ben and Anna did the cow chores. Mom made more filled donuts, we had lemon custard filled donuts, cream filled donuts with chocolate on top, cream filled donuts with mint chocolate on top.

Sunday the men and boys all went hunting. Last weekend of hunting season for the year. Toni, Anna and I loaded T021 when his new owners showed up. We chatted with them for awhile. We hadn’t met them before, but we knew lots of people in common with them. The ag world is small. Then we went and checked the cows and made a list of the heavy cows. Then Anna and I had lunch and Anna went out and caught her steers. I worked on some office work were I could watch her out the window. Then men got back and had a quick lunch and then went up to clean ducks. Mar and his cousin showed up and got the last two pigs. Toni went out and checked the mares and gave them mineral. Then we did regular chores, moved some mares around, talked about what needs to be done.

With February around the corner, optimism is rising. We are nearing the end of calving season, bull buyers are showing up to look at the bulls we have for sale, and foaling is right around the corner. Like every year, we are so excited to see what we get for foals. We have some maiden mares that may be the early foalers. We aren’t placing bets yet on who is going to be first, but we are starting to see some mares bagging up.

And we are excited to watch Anna on WA Grown, Kade and Natalie were also interviewed at Spokane, so we are looking forward to see who all gets on the show. It airs tonight at 7 on Facebook, and later in the week on TV.

All in a days work, calves in the goose pit, new babies, bulls need scratched, broken axle on the flatbed trailer, headlight on the mini bike.

And a very special unicorn princess happy birthday to Aeliana James.

Monday January 3, 2022, back to work and school in the middle of a wintery mix, rain, snow, rain, snow. Kaine told me I should do a calendar of just our stallions, that is something to think about?? I am putting it in the middle here to see who reads this. LOL Ben is home one more day before going back to work, so he checked the cows and sent us lots of snow babies pics. I realize we were in a drought and need the moisture, that does not make doing chores in the snow any easier. I guess the cows decided they could not hold the calves in any longer. One of Kaine’s Angus heifers calved, we saw she was calving and got her in the barn, and one of the Hereford cows calved. Murtaugh, Andee and Chester (all dogs) all went out with me on my checks, at 10 and Midnight. I gave the Hereford calf a half bottle of colostrum at 10, I could not tell if it had nursed, it was up, and it was better to be safe than sorry.

Anna got up and did the 3AM check, she left Ben a message that Jacky was calving so to wake her if he needed help. At Ben’s check she had calved, so he went and got her a bale of straw, since she did not have it on the straw, but she is a heifer. Jaxsen’s heifer in fact which is why she has such a creative name. The kids had a 2 hr delay, so since Ben went back to work after his month-long Christmas break, Anna got to check while it was still light out. Toni went down and checked a little later in the day. 636 and 339 both calved on Tuesday. Anna put some straw bales in the Colorado when she got home and parked it back in the heavy pen, in case we needed it during the night. Murtaugh, Andee, Chester and I did the 10 check and Anna did the midnight check, Ben did the early morning. It was snowing when I checked, blowing when Anna checked, and clear when Ben checked. Ben and Anna said the dogs do not go with them, so I guess I am the only one they love. LOL

Wednesday the roads were not much different than Tuesday, but school was canceled, so the kids got to stay home. We had a winter weather advisory, so it was good anyway that way we did not have to worry about them getting home. It snowed off and on in Pasco all day, but did not start up at our house until late afternoon. No new babies on Wednesday. It was our baby cousin Whitney’s birthday. She is the youngest Bennett cousin. Every year that she ages really makes us feel our age. We can all remember when she was born. We didn’t do anything with her on Wednesday because of the weather.

Thursday more snow and rain, kids and Ben were off from school. Getting out of our house I just had to make a run through the snow drifts, but as I got towards Pasco there had been rain, so the highway was slick. The weather warmed up during the day, so the roads were fine going home. Kade went to my house, and the three older kids went sledding. The kids and Toni got chores done and got home before dark. It is still way to icy for them to build fence or return to halter breaking foals. We still have 5 or 6 that aren’t halter broke, so that is going go be fun the bigger they get.

The kids had another snow day on Friday, so they checked cows, broke water and fed grain. The weather was really warming up, but out on the rural roads where it melted over the snow it was really slick still. We will have a few cows calving, we had three Friday night. Marlo came down and helped with chores on Friday and brought us some really good cupcakes for dessert.

Saturday we tagged all of the calves in the heavy pen and turned them out in the corn field. Then we got a new batch of heavy cows in and the bred heifers that were for sale. Kaine only fell on the ice 6 or 7 times getting the calved cows in. Ben had to literally pull him off of the ice by his hood at one point. Don’t worry, at 14 that does not stop you from running on the ice and jumping on it again the next time you see a frozen puddle. I told him we could have made a Tick Tok video. Since the weather was much warmer the cows did not follow the hay as well as normal, so we had to push a few in. Some neighbors found some old horse blankets in their basement they were no longer using and a garbage bag of regular horse halters, so we put a blanket on Abs, replaced Double’s blanket that he destroyed, and put the others away. Mom made us éclair cake for dessert on Saturday, she used chocolate pudding instead of vanilla, it was still REALLY good. Toni still wants to call it a salad so we can eat it all the time.

Sunday Camas came over to help, Anna went and picked her up. We got yearling weights on the bulls and show heifers. Kaine fell down a few more times. It was slick on Sunday, since it was so warm on Saturday, we had a lot more snow melt and refreeze. Kam came and got the bred heifers on Sunday, so they went to their new home. We had 5 in the heavy pen, so it was not too soon for me. One actually calved Sunday night. We have 34 head left to calve now with the heifers gone. We went and checked all of the cattle. Did chores.

Kade and Jaxsen start playing basketball again next week, so we are going to be short handed. But we always make it work. If anyone is looking for any broodmares, Dal Dagnon passed away and his family is selling the majority of his broodmare herd. They are asking $800 per mare, they may or may not be bred for 2022. Dal had a good, strong breeding program for many years. There are some older mares in the group, but really well bred. I know at least one has Poco Bueno on her papers, and that is hard to find. We can get you Ray’s number if you want to go look at the mares, they are in Tonasket. If we get any pictures of the mares we will post them, but that probably will not happen.

2022 came in with an explosion of snow. If you are a pessimist, I guess you wouldn’t see this as a good start to the year, but as a realist, this is a great start. Hopefully all of the bad weather is just getting out of the way right off the get go and we can settle in for a nice mild rest of winter. And we really needed the moisture. Snow now means grass later, I have to keep telling myself that.

Also, dad has a friend, we all have a friend but they were dads friends first, with some longhorns for sale. If you want a longhorn hit up dad and he will get you their number. Those are the actual longhorns in the pictures.

Monday started really early for Ben and Toni, at around 12:53, Frank and Firecracker’s buyers were turning onto Hendricks Rd, finally after a terrible trip up, of breakdowns, snow, car wrecks, etc. So Ben and Toni went out and loaded them, they loaded great, and they turned and burned for CA. Most of the details are on last week’s post. Anna and Kaine had Dr appts in the morning, so Ben took them to that, since he is off for December. They checked cows first, and 947 and 847 had both calved. 947 had actually calved when Ben checked them and 12:53, and it was already up, dry and nursing. The cows that did not take in the first round of AIing are calving now to the bulls, and the 2nd round of AI cows are calving. So lots of calves Monday. After Ben and the kids got back they got in the heifers from circle 7 to bangs vaccinate on Tuesday. Hank texted while they were at the dr that he could come out Tuesday afternoon and bang the heifers. So the kids did not go back to school but helped get heifers in, sort and haul them. Mom made a REALLY good éclair cake, it was so good. Toni wants to call it white salad or something so it can go in the salad category and be eaten with every meal. Kade had a bb game after school. So Toni and Dad went to that.

More calves on Tuesday. Toni canceled her afternoon meeting to help bangs vaccinate heifers. Toni had a morning meeting so took off for that then was a tad late for bangs vaccinating, but she did get there. They did them in record time and then Kendel helped them push them back down the road. Then Toni worked on Memphis, she tied her to Tulip, and the kids did chores. Memphis is really tame and nice, but has some fire to her. It took Toni and Tulip quite a long time to get Memphis across the road. Memphis wasn’t into leading. But we know by the time she leaves to move to Alvina’s house, she will be good.

Wednesday Anna went to Josie’s house after school to make cookies for FFA, she brought Kaine and Jaxsen home first so they could do chores. Toni had a big hearing in the afternoon, but did get her chores done and worked on Memphis before Dad and Toni went to watch Kade play bb. Mom only had to crack the whip a little bit to make Jaxsen help with ALL the chores. Anna finished the family calendar for grandma Wednesday night, so I got them ordered for Grandma, and everyone that wants one. The weather has been pretty cold, but still good weather for calving vs February which is historically our worst month of weather.

We woke up to snow on Thursday, but it was not too cold, just barely freezing. Of course we had a handful of calves in the snow. Ben tied up a bull we are halter breaking and Anna’s clubby steer on Thursday. By Thursday Memphis was leading, tying up, and acting like a pro. That is the great thing about the Leroy foals, they are super smart and they want to be people pleasers. Memphis just needed to know she wasn’t the alpha, once she got it, she got it. We decided to see if Alvina would trade Memphis out of Kit Kat, but it was a no go, so Kit Kat is still here. Memphis and Kit Kat are ¾ sisters, so Kit Kat will be great for us. Memphis just has a really cool color and markings on top of all the other good stuff. Kade had his last bb game on Thursday (finally) in Warden. His best game yet, he had the first 4 points of the game, and Connell beat Warden. Kade was a rebounding machine. It helps that he is pretty tall.

Friday Ben, Anna and I got up and checked cows. Then the kids went to school for their last day before Christmas, except Kaine, because they were only watching movies all day so he wanted to stay home and help Ben. Then I ran Ben and Kaine into Othello to get Ben’s pickup from the mechanic. Kaine learned out to catch calves to tag, which is a skill if you have ever jumped out of a moving pickup to run after a calf to catch it and then have their mom right behind you. Ben is really good at it and is freaky fast. Kaine said he caught the slow ones with tame moms. I went and had a hair appt in the morning and then Mom, Toni and I went and got mani and pedis in the afternoon. Dad went with us, then we got Applebeees to go and ran by Tation and Cami house to get dad’s Christmas present and coffees and came home. Mom and Dad had never had mani/pedis before and they seemed to really enjoy themselves. It was really nice to have an afternoon and just do something fun. The kids had done chores, since they are such wonderful children. Mom left them fresh cookies and apple sauce for after school. Marlo was there to help do chores.

Saturday more checking. Then we got the calved heifers in, tagged their calves and hauled them down to circle 7. Alvina came and got her new horse, Memphis, and took her back to Pullman. In the afternoon Anna and Kaine went to Richland to watch a basketball game. We continued to work around the house until chore time. Anna’s retired show heifer Amora calved while Anna was gone. It was backwards so we had to get her in and pull it. Now that we have a good freeze, Toni is getting serious about deworming everything so Kade and Toni got Leroy, who Kade is calling LaRoy (Dale Brisby reference) and Dude done. Kade held LaRoy by hugging his neck, so a super wild stud, but they had to catch the wild man Dude with a piece of string. Dude isn’t as good about the dewormer, maybe because it is gross? Chores were fine. We decided to wait to get a new foal or two in for halter breaking, so things are relatively easy. Just normal stuff with some extra due to the weather.

Sunday was snowy, we had to get some of the heifers that calved in the barn on Sunday, they don’t get up fast enough and get them licked off to keep them warm like the cows. Then we go the herd in and sorted off a new batch of heavy heifers. And put them in the heavy heifer pen. We decided to get the old mares all blanketed, because it is cold. Most of them did pretty good. Smoke, our old trusty dusty pony that we have had her entire long life, was the worst. She didn’t kick us, but she didn’t want a blanket. The kids helped. Then we put up the lighted letters, let the kids pick their horses and got our annual KT Ranch Christmas pic. The snow wasn’t quite a thick, but it was good. They all picked their 2 year olds that they are working on. Jax elected to hold the letters. Haha. We put straw out for the horses to have some extra protection against the elements.

Next week is Christmas. Where did the time go? With Christmas around the corner a person can get caught up in the commercialization of the holiday, but that isn’t what it is about. The kids have done a great job in the last few weeks volunteering to help where needed. They helped the FFA wrap presents, donated their own funds to the fund raisers, donated their own things or helped pick things out for others that needed them. And by things I mean coats, hats, mittens, things that are needed. November is the thankful month and December is the mindful month. We need to be mindful of what we have, how we can help others, our impact on other people, and overall to be good stewards of the land and of our society.

We are looking forward to a great holiday with family and friends. We are blessed to be able to spend time with our Grandma who is 91. (Those are Christmas pics from last year) Merry Christmas to all!
