It has been a smoky week here in Washington. For everyone who has checked in or been worried about us, we are located in the middle of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project, so we are relatively safe from any major wildfires. We are fortunate to have a lot of irrigated ground and water surrounding us.
Unfortunately, many people near Kahlotus have not been as lucky. Dad, Kaine, and Kade finished wheat harvest there, but fires in the surrounding dryland country have burned wheat fields and pasture. Please keep the farmers, ranchers, and everyone else affected in your thoughts. Losing an entire crop or grazing ground is devastating
Our last outside mares have officially headed home, bringing another breeding season to a close. Thank you again to everyone who trusted our stallions and breeding program with their mares this year!
I traveled to Boise for the National Water Resources Association Summer Conference and had a great time. From there, I headed north to Grand Coulee Dam for another work meeting and a tour. It was a busy stretch, but both trips were well worth it.
While I was gone, Josslin came down to pick up Macy’s show heifer. I still haven’t heard what Macy named her, so we may have to stay tuned for that announcement!
Back at the ranch, Kade is working with my horse, KT Smokin Hottie (“Gucci”), again. Chad stopped by to put shoes on her, so she is ready to get back to work. Electra continues to heal well following her surgery, and Kade was able to take her for a short ride. Toni has also been riding Holly, who was featured in this week’s Ranch Horse Monday post.
Ben bought a new Longhorn from his cousin Andee, because apparently we needed one more mouth to feed and one more set of horns around here! Ben and I put the gates on the freestanding panels so we could finish that fence line. Afterward, I turned Sagebug out to stretch his legs and eat down some weeds before we turn the bulls into that area.
A few yearlings also left for their new homes this week. Yo Gun will be staying with us for a few more weeks because her new home is near Spokane, where the fire danger is currently a concern. We are happy to keep her here until it is safer for her to travel.
I finally took some updated pictures of the puppies. If anyone is looking for a cow-dog puppy, let me know—they are growing quickly and getting cuter by the day!
Anna is still working with the steers she has available, and they are coming along well. We managed to get a few new pictures of them, too. Kade and Jaxsen have also been busy working with their show steers as the Benton-Franklin Fair gets closer.
Kaine has the week off, but “off” clearly doesn’t mean much around here. He has been working on several welding projects for Toni and even got his welding truck running again before he heads back to work.
Between traveling, harvest, horses, cattle, puppies, fencing, welding, and watching the fire conditions, it has been another busy week. We are especially thankful for the water surrounding us.
