Thursday Thoughts from the Ranch

Thursdays around here are that funny in-between day…
Not quite the start of the week, not quite the weekend either.

The cows don’t care what day it is—
they still need checked.
The horses are still waiting at the gate like they haven’t been fed in years.
And somehow, the to-do list keeps growing faster than we can cross things off.

We might be a little tired, a little dusty, and running on coffee and stubbornness…
but we wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Because out here, even the long days come with good views, good stock, and a whole lot of gratitude.

Just another Thursday doing what we love.

Kade’s favorite show heifer now cow: Conley Sandy 2540 “Baby Cow”

My favorite show heifer “baby cow” who is now a cow with an interesting name. She was a heifer that excelled in the show ring and did lots of great things in her prime. Then she turned around and has been a great producing cow and has made a great impact in my herd.

McKenna favorite show heifer now cow: BK Zebo Queen 135 “Mayhem”

Anna told McKenna and McCall said 349 was the bestest, and McKenna said NO, Mayhem is the BESTEST. She halter broke her to take to the Nile and so she is much better then 349. I see a theme and the twins halter breaking Kaine’s heifers…..

Toni’s favorite show heifer now cow: Traynhams Barbara J2290

My favorite ex-show heifer is one we fondly call 7. Her sale tag number was 7 when we bought her for Anna from Traynham Ranches. We have been buying show heifers from Buckley and Brad for a few years and really liked what this heifer brought to the table. Our goal is to get show heifers that ultimately fit into our cattle herd. That is always a challenge but we have been lucky to find some really awesome breeders that we have been able to purchase heifers from year after year. Some of my other favorite ex-show heifers have come from Seldom Rest along with other breeders. I feel like we have been very lucky in our friends that we have gained in this chapter of the kids showing outside heifers. Back to heifer 7. Anna showed her all over and she did pretty well. Kellie and I continue to pick heifers that are probably more broody and future cow potential than true show heifers and 7 was no exception. After 7 was done being a show heifer, she did not calve as a 2 year old which is our goal. Always disappointing but not abnormal for show heifers to miss their first year in calving timely. They are under tremendous stress. To make up for the fact that 7 did not calve on time, 7 blessed us with twins when she was a three year old, again as a four year old, and this year as a five year old. In three years 7 has had 6 live calves. That is what I call a money making heifer.

Kellie Favorite Show Heifer now Cow: Foxxy Cleopatra

I think Toni wanted more current pictures, so I have three here with Foxxy’s current calf, Ella. However, Foxxy has been around for a long time, so it hard to narrow down the pictures. Foxxy is my favorite for many reasons. She produces outstanding calves every year, that Anna, Jaxsen and Kade have all shown. She loves being a tour stop and eating corn cobs out of the window of your pickup. She will give everything her all, and go to a jackpot to show cow and calf, let some kid feed her, show her etc, lead the herd to the next field, she is game for whatever you throw her way. I am going to start with my favorite so no one has too high of expectations for who is next.
