Cousin Leslie says she doesn’t like to get her long johns out until it is really cold because once you start putting them on, you put them on until winter is over. Well it is officially long john wearing season. It isn’t just winter, it is a cold winter.

Sunday night Anna, Ben and I switched off and on getting up all night checking the cows. We had 3 cows calve and two didn’t get up and nurse right away, the cold wind will just suck the spirit right out of them, so we gave them colostrum. Ben is off until January, he has to use up his vacation days, so he gets to check them all day. It snowed through the night, so the kids had a two-hour delay. Anna used that time to check cows with Ben, Kade to practice roping, Kaine to sleep and Jaxsen to catch up on his shows. The main roads were not bad, so I came to work on time. The kids got home and did their chores, Toni worked on The Joker and T, and Joss is getting an additional week to wean her and her sister, and she was mad her sister went out and she did not. I got up and checked Monday night, Anna checked around midnight and Ben checked in the early morning, due to the cold we are checking the calving cows at night.  The weather is actually pretty good for calving, there have just been a few days that have been less than ideal.

Tuesday I did not go to work, we were going to a funeral. In the morning Ben and Anna went and checked early, after all night of checking cows due to the cold. We had a number of new calves Monday night/Tuesday morning. Anna went to school and Ben and I ran 338 in the chute and helped her graft calf, he is a char/jersey and could not figure out how to nurse. Then we ran the cows in the smaller calving pen in and tagged the ones that had calved and turned them out. 241 had lost her calf and 541 had twins, so 241 got a new calf on Tuesday. Then it was time for me to get ready, Toni stopped by and picked me up around 11:30, she had picked Kendel up on the way. Kendel and Leslie made a bunch of jello for us to take at the request of the deceased’s family. Glad those two stepped up. We picked up Grandma and Diane at Grandma’s house. Then we all caravaned over. The funeral was really well attended and a lot of great memories were shared. On our way home we stopped and chatted with grandma for about an hr then came home to do chores. I worked on The Joker and Joss and Toni worked on T. Joss was not mad at me, so she must think Toni turned out her sister.  Jaxsen started basketball practice. He is the only one playing bb.

Wednesday morning, we had a few more calves during the night. When Ben went out and 3:30 there was a big coyote in with the cows. And the cows are literally right next to our house, we walk out and checked them. We have lots of calves being born, but luckily he spooked the coyote off. Toni worked on the foals, she has to tie Absolute up or she “helps” her with T.  That means Absolute nips at Toni, nips at T, and gets in the way. Absolute can be an absolute pain in the butt. She was in getting her eye doctored for months so she has no concept of personal space. And for some reason most of our grulla fillies have had lots of personality. Both Joker and T are doing awesome.  Joss is pretty much at a standstill. She is very brainy, but she isn’t ready to realize that she isn’t the boss. Turning her sister out didn’t help.  We will win her over, it is just going to take a bit. Sometimes that best thing you can do for foals like this is to turn them out and let them mature. The basics are there- she leads, ties, catches, etc. She just needs to accept that she is not the alpha. Time can work wonders.

It snowed on Thursday, and with weather change new babies seem to be born. Dad hauled the youngest Hereford bull to Connell, Uncle Joe is going to take him, we are unsure about the terms right now, trade for a heifer, money, we take him back, etc. He just needs to be out of here. For those that don’t know, Kicker and Ben do not appreciate the Herefords. As in they don’t like them. They want Angus. This bull happened to also be younger than our other bulls so he was already on their list. We are waiting to see how he looks in the spring. He is a pretty dark red bull. Really a perfect specimen, but we kept a bunch of sisters to him, so we could only use him for one year.   Toni, Kaine and Kade wormed the yearling fillies, except for Doll who got by the boys, and the old horses. We had a water leak under a cement pad in the heavy cow pen, so Ben went to Othello and rented a jack hammer and fixed the pipe. It is always interesting to realize that we see Kade and Kaine as kids, but the horses don’t. The yearling fillies did not like the boys trying to help catch them.

Friday the kids had no school, due to all of the snow. So both Toni and I got lots of new pics with our new lens. Ben and Anna went to the Medonca dairy to get a jersey/char heifer for Anna and mom, mom is paying but Anna is doing the labor from what I hear?? While Ben and Anna were gone Kaine and I got the couple  of calves in from the heavy pen and tagged the calves and tuned them out. Then we moved all of the heavy cows together, so we could lock the new group in a separate pen. Marlo came to do chores, and Marlo, Kade, Toni and I got pics of T and Absolute. Kaine went to spend the night with his friend Cyson, who was taking him hunting the next day.  We got Doll in and got the wormer down her. So we are done at Mom’s getting everything done. We also got some new pictures of the studs at the corral. Hey, they had halters on, might as well get pictures.

Saturday we got the cows in the sorted the new heavy group out. Then they all really started calving, I think we had 15 calves on Saturday. Ben and Anna had to pull one during the night, I  seen her on my night check, so when Anna went out at midnight the feet were out and they could see it was backwards. We got some more tagged and turned out. Basically, most of Saturday was making sure the cows were with their own calves. When the red clubby bull was born everyone wanted him, I guess because he was different, so MC01 and her calf got moved. He is a very pretty little red clubby bull. Kaine always gets the first shot at claiming the red clubbies so we will see. We had bought this red cow to breed to a clubby bull so we are excited to see how this goes. We actually have 3 red composite cows to breed to the clubby bull. 710 took her calf up the hill into the snow, that was where she was born in 2017 in a snow drift and I guess she wanted her calf in the same spot. A heifer calved in a mud hole. You know, normally calving stuff. At chores on Saturday Toni, Kade, Kaine and I got new pics of The Joker and Joss. Then we turned them out. We are done halter breaking for a while. Foxxy had a bull calf Saturday night, so Anna was pretty excited about that. Really there are a bunch of exciting calves and these cows are doing a great job

Sunday we had Kaine’s birthday party, Uncle Skip could not come down due to the roads, and he did not have his snow tires on yet. Marlo came out to party with us. MC02 was calving during the party and had a big ol club calf, so we had to go and pull him mid party. We brought Foxxy and her calf in to hang out with her so she was not in by herself.  Another big red clubby bull calf, so now Kaine has 2 to chose from. Anna, Kaine, Kade and Camas went out and checked the cows, Kade wanted to see Vixen’s calf. He is a cute one too. Also a clubby, but more Angus than clubby. We did the Christmas pictures Sunday, Camas got to be in them since she was out.

Last Week in Pictures – Toni and I both got new lens, between us both and Anna, we may have gone picture CRAZY

As ranchers we have to make hard choices, deal with the results, and keep going. Sometimes easier said than done.

Everyone was back at school and work on Monday. Tulip and Toni worked on the 3 fillies, the two buckskins were pretty easy, Joss being the easiest. Gucci wasn’t terrible, but the worst of the three. Toni says we are selling the easiest and smartest one, I said that is because her mom is not old and the other two are out of old moms. Kaine and Jaxsen did horse chores. Anna and the men did cow chores. Kade had CCE practice after school for FFA. Three people came back from the last years team and they had three new kids. I have not had any reports on Molly for a week or so. She has been doing really well, she is now on spore probiotics. We discussed with mom moving her to a slightly bigger pen and not locking her in at night, so mom is considering it.

Tuesday morning dad went and had coffee with his friends (old people). Toni and I joined Roberta’s Fantasy NFR, separately, and have argued each person we have picked for each team, I think. We did not consult on anything. Kade, Kaine and Anna also joined fantasy NFR at school with his FFA teacher. They did not ask for our advice on their teams either. We know Kade has Shad Mayfield because he loves Shad. Toni had the boys help her with the fillies, so they got used to other people. She had Cog help her get grain in the shed.  Cog (I call him Rich because that is his actual name) will pretty much go anywhere. He is one of he most mild-mannered colts ever. We had a skiff of snow and Toni and the fillies did not enjoy it.

On Wednesday I went to Spokane to a work conference, the roads were not good up around Spokane. Toni and Kade worked on the fillies. Kaine had a football program after school where he got awarded for making it as an Honorable Mention on the All Star team. Dad went and picked him up. Toni, Kade and Jaxsen put up their Christmas tree. I was at the Davenport, so saw LOTS of fancy Christmas trees.

On Thursday Toni’s pickup didn’t start, so she drove down to check cows in Barry’s little stick-shift 1980’s pickup that he has at their house. Miranda did not recognize her in that pickup, but she took the Colorado out to check cows, so Murtaugh went, she will go with anyone. Miranda was mad when they got back that she was left. We started calving and had a cute heifer calf. Toni texted me that Molly was not feeling well, so her and mom were taking her into Sheena. Sheena diagnosed her with an infection from the surgery. Toni said the fillies are doing awesome.

We lost Molly Thursday night/Friday morning. Many of you read the post, and thank you for all of your kind works. Losing Molly was very hard on all of us. We knew that there were impacts from the colic surgery, we had just thought she was out of the woods. Having her go downhill so quickly, getting her over to Sheena right away, and still losing her was a real blow. Friday I came home from Spokane, the roads were much much better than Wednesday. Marlo came out and Kade and Marlo did chores, Toni and I worked on the foals, then Marlo came over and helped. Kaine went snowmobiling with his friend Maxx, he was really excited to get invited. Friday night we had a cow calving and pulled dead twins, they had both been trying to come out at the same time. We started feeding the cows Friday night because it was so cold and they would have some straw for the calves as well.

Saturday we checked early due to the cold wind. Lots of heavy cows. After Ben worked on watering, Anna and I ran to a local dairy to get a jersey/char bull to graft onto the cow that had the dead twins. He is a cute little guy. Diane Schuler also stopped by on her way by to say hi and see some of the horses. After lunch I had some coworkers come out with Hamish Howard. Hamish is from New Zealand and we, at the Irrigation District, are looking at some work flow software, it is called Assura Software. He took a ranch tour, which is not as good in the winter, he fed Foxxy the cow and rode Gracie the horse. Eric also jumped on Gracie. Mom made them an apricot pie and then they headed on their way. We then did chores and worked on the foals. We also cleaned up all of the stuff related to Molly.

We had a bitterly cold wind Saturday night, so lost two calves. So Ben, Anna and I got all of the cows in and sorted off of the heavy cows. We locked the heavy cows up by the house, so we had to combine a lot of show steers and heifers to make room. We have around 90 heavy cows locked in. Toni, Kade and Jaxsen went and checked the yearling heifers and rode around some on their horses. I went and picked Kaine up from Maxx’s house and then we did chores.  We turned out Gucci and Holly, haltered the Joker, Tee, and left Joss in. These are the last two of the weaned foals to be halter broke. The only one left after this is Summer, who is not weaned. Luckily by the end of Sunday the wind had lessened.

After a hard week, it always makes a person question decisions, question choices, put some self-reflection time in. In the end if we made choices because they were in the best interest of the animal, without considering cost, time, energy, or emotion, we have done our best.  Could we have done things differently? Sure. Would it result in a different outcome? We don’t know the answer to that. What we do know is that as long as we do our best by these animals that have been put in our care, we can’t second guess that. As ranchers we have to make hard choices, deal with the results, and keep going. Easier said than done, but something to keep in mind. Watching new calves being born helps to brighten a person’s spirits and keep focused.  Again, a big thank you for all of the support that we have been given through this ordeal. It helps.

I love seeing all those memes about how if you like winter/snow you probably don’t have livestock. TRUE! We don’t love winter or snow.

Monday was bitterly cold. When Ben did the 3 AM heifer check 926 was calving so he got her in the barn. Him and Anna ended up pulling it. Lots of calves Monday, I guess because they all want to calve in the cold? Gloria, Baby Arcee, Pinda, 931, 926 and Autumn all calved. Ben, Anna and Kaine worked on thawing water, feeding, putting out straw and trying to keep everyone warm on Monday. Sometimes that is all a person can do in a day, and it is the priority, keep the livestock healthy. Meachams came home from Clarkston and were home in time for chores, and for Mike to come and look at their furnace, which he wasn’t able to fix. When mom has time to sit down, she is sitting in her chair with her heated vest on (in the house) under her heated blanket. But she likes to stay really warm. Sometimes when we go in the house after chores we start sweating. Maybe that is why Dad got himself a new tv and now watches tv in the other room?

Tuesday the cold and snow continued.  Ben tells me it is not as cold. Toni tells me her house is very cold, except upstairs. She has a big trial on Wednesday, so is trying to stay warm in her office working. A few more cold babies born on Tuesday. Ben and the kids just worked on keeping water in front of the animals, keeping the calves in straw, and anything calving going into the barn. The Meacham’s furnace got fixed Tuesday night. We are so thankful that we Mike Niles of Ringold Refrigeration to use for these types of repairs. We went up to Nists Tuesday night and had our annual Christmas dinner. We got dessert to take up with us from Cowpath Bakery in Othello. It was a huge hit.  Kenzie and Daniel are having a baby girl so we are all excited about that.

Wednesday, guess what, big surprise for winter, still cold and snowy. Toni had to drive to court, but the roads were not too bad. The baby born at 3 am Wednesday morning got to come in the house and warm up. He was a cold little fella. Toni was done by noon and came back home earlier than expected. She won her case, yeah.  None of us feel great. I think we are all just tired and cold. It is hard to be energetic and in good spirits when the weather is dark and cold. Anna worked on her show heifers on Wednesday, since we had some sun. The good news was that Wednesday was my last day of work until 2022.

Thursday we checked in the AM, and then ran to Othello to get my pickup that was done at Deweys. It was nice having my Colorado back and having working 4 wheel drive in the snow. After that we got the cows in and sorted off the heavy ones and locked them up by the house, so when we get up all night to check them it is a lot closer and we do not have to drive all over.  We still have to check the cows during the day, but when we are checking all night now we just go out to the run. Todd, Garrett and Camas came over and played games.

Friday was New Year’s Eve, Happy new Year everyone. We were supposed to go to grandmas and hang out with everyone in the show barn, but due to the cold and checking all night we did not go. We are checking every two hrs so we could not have stayed long. We spent the day putting out straw, feeding and thawing ice. Normally Ben gets some good fence built when he is home from work but this year it seems like it got really cold really fast and we spend time just keeping everything going. So we were boring on Friday night. Someone let off fireworks about 7:00 pm ish and Toni’s dog ran off, but she ran to Mom’s so Toni went and got her. Lucy does not like big bangs. She has a tendency to run off when there is shooting. During hunting season Toni kept her in the garage quite a bit. For anyone that doesn’t know Lucy, she is Toni’s Idaho Shag with all the hair

Saturday Kaine’s friend Camas came over and helped. After checking we went down to mom and dads and got some of the smaller calves in to sell to a repeat buyer. We get them in to the corral that holds Jackpot and Stetson. Jackpot tries to bite the calves over the fence. Stetson isn’t quite as aggressive. A calf got in with Jackpot and Ben had to run over and save it. Jackpot will get them. That is a sign of a good cowhorse.  Then Kaine, Camas and Ben went and picked the 5 up and Anna and I put straw in with the show steers and let the cows and calves out of the barn. Then we did chores and played card games until late. Even with how cold it is, the weanling foals are doing pretty good, as are the weanling calves. The calves are all really gaining well.

Sunday the cold continued.  No new babies, just trying to keep everyone warm. The old Hereford bull Scrat died. Scrat, Betty White and Shining Spark, we lost a lot of greats at the end of the month. For those of you that know Rocky the Hereford bull, he is older than Scrat, but still doing ok. We are going to miss Scrat.  Otherwise everything is doing pretty good. One of the weanling colts, Starlight, seems to be impacted by the cold and acts a little colicy, but we have hit him now twice with that Zestera product and he has gotten better right away. Also on Sunday the men put out more straw to all of the horses. In memory of Scrat below.

I love seeing all those memes about how if you like winter/snow you probably don’t have livestock. TRUE! We don’t love winter or snow. Yes, it can be pretty. Yes, we can get some neat pictures, but it is hard on animals, humans, everything. On a positive note Jaxsen loves breaking ice with an ax. No joke. Toni went down to help him one day thinking that he would be having a hard time, nope. He told her to be useful and go do something else. 1) He has an ax, which we don’t really let him have sharp things in general because we are afraid of what he is going to do to the other kids; and 2) He gets to break things and it is a positive thing. So we have finally found something on the ranch he likes to do.

The end of 2021! No crystal ball here, but we hope that prices will stay up. If you made a New Years resolution to get back into horses, let us help you. We have a few for sale and they are all great. We have 2 weanling colts, some fillies with prices, and we can do 2022 in vitro contracts if you have a favorite mare that must have the foal out of. Let us know!

We hope everyone had a good Christmas, we sure did, and Happy New Year.

Monday we woke up to more snow, yea, I know it is December, it is too be expected. More snow babies, the heifer that calved was moved to the barn and her calf warmed up. Ben, Anna and Kaine ran Ben’s other work pickup into the mechanic to fix it and the kids school driving car into get studded tires. They said the roads in Othello were a sheet of ice. Ben and the kids worked on more fence around the corn fields, to move the cows to new stalks. The farmer that grows the corn where our cows are mows the stalks, so in the wind storm on Saturday we lost a lot of stalks in the pen they were in, it is a hill side and the stalks were just blowing away. Ben and Anna went back in to get the car and it was not done yet, so they had an hr to kill in Othello. Kaine and Kade went down and did chores.

Tuesday morning, we had a few more calves. Ben and the kids continued working on the new fence line. They pounded a lot of posts on Tuesday and laid a lot of wire. They finished the wire fence and turned the cows our on some non mowed stalks. The cows were all happy. They had to get 002, she is a heifer, and her calf into the barn and nurse it. Normal ranch work on Tuesday.

Wednesday more snow and cow checking. Mike Chubbs came out and butchered our last three for 2021, we will have another steer in May. Ben and the kids worked on rebuilding some of the wood fence on Wednesday. Ben’s half ton was done getting fixed on Wednesday so they ran into Deweys in Othello and picked it up.

Thursday I was off of work, since Christmas Day is Saturday we got Thursday and Friday off for our holidays. We checked cow and then Ben went to the skin Dr. Anna and I checked circle 7 and made sure everyone was paired up. Then kids went to Connell to help clean and decorate the show barn for Christmas Eve. I ran into Othello and picked up two tires, one was a fix and one was a new tire. The dogs and I ran to NW Farm Supply and got some tags and went home to make a few.

Friday was Christmas Eve. I put clam chowder in the crock pot and Toni put stew in to take. Skip got here. We checked cows, tied Jack Frost and the orange and white steer up. We hauled calved heifers out again to the alfalfa field, since we had done it Sunday there were only 5. We tagged calves. Then went to Connell and had soups and stews and did the White Elephant Gift exchange.

Merry Christmas everyone. We opened our Santa stuff and then went and checked cows before heading to mom and dads to open presents. We all got way too much stuff. The Meachams headed to Clarkston for the Meacham Christmas. Ben, Anna, Kaine and I went home to cook the ham, make potatoes and clean up Christmas presents. Terry, Erina, Grandma and Joe all came over, in addition to mom, dad and Skip. We had a great dinner, then mom, dad, grandma, Kaine, Erina and I played pinnacle, Erina and Kaine had never played, so Erina played with mom and Kaine played with me. Jewels paid by grandma and was her lucky charm. Grandma got 100 aces is almost every hand. Ben, Anna, Joe and Terry all went out and looked at steers and heifers and checked cows.  Then everyone went home, Anna and Ben did the cow chores and Kaine and I did the horse chores.

Sunday we woke up to be being cold and snowy. So we tried to get straw out to as much as possible. Anna and I took wheat straw out to the cows, Ben and Kaine used the tractor and hauled straw around the barn, and cleaned out pens. It was a long day of keeping everyone warm.

For anyone that wants to know where I got Anna, Toni and my shoes:

Categories: Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Next week is Christmas. Where did the time go?

Monday started really early for Ben and Toni, at around 12:53, Frank and Firecracker’s buyers were turning onto Hendricks Rd, finally after a terrible trip up, of breakdowns, snow, car wrecks, etc. So Ben and Toni went out and loaded them, they loaded great, and they turned and burned for CA. Most of the details are on last week’s post. Anna and Kaine had Dr appts in the morning, so Ben took them to that, since he is off for December. They checked cows first, and 947 and 847 had both calved. 947 had actually calved when Ben checked them and 12:53, and it was already up, dry and nursing. The cows that did not take in the first round of AIing are calving now to the bulls, and the 2nd round of AI cows are calving. So lots of calves Monday.  After Ben and the kids got back they got in the heifers from circle 7 to bangs vaccinate on Tuesday. Hank texted while they were at the dr that he could come out Tuesday afternoon and bang the heifers. So the kids did not go back to school but helped get heifers in, sort and haul them. Mom made a REALLY good éclair cake, it was so good. Toni wants to call it white salad or something so it can go in the salad category and be eaten with every meal. Kade had a bb game after school. So Toni and Dad went to that.

More calves on Tuesday. Toni canceled her afternoon meeting to help bangs vaccinate heifers. Toni had a morning meeting so took off for that then was a tad late for bangs vaccinating, but she did get there.  They did them in record time and then Kendel helped them push them back down the road. Then Toni worked on Memphis, she tied her to Tulip, and the kids did chores.  Memphis is really tame and nice, but has some fire to her. It took Toni and Tulip quite a long time to get Memphis across the road. Memphis wasn’t into leading. But we know by the time she leaves to move to Alvina’s house, she will be good.

Wednesday Anna went to Josie’s house after school to make cookies for FFA, she brought Kaine and Jaxsen home first so they could do chores. Toni had a big hearing in the afternoon, but did get her chores done and worked on Memphis before Dad and Toni went to watch Kade play bb. Mom only had to crack the whip a little bit to make Jaxsen help with ALL the chores. Anna finished the family calendar for grandma Wednesday night, so I got them ordered for Grandma, and everyone that wants one.  The weather has been pretty cold, but still good weather for calving vs February which is historically our worst month of weather.

We woke up to snow on Thursday, but it was not too cold, just barely freezing. Of course we had a handful of calves in the snow. Ben tied up a bull we are halter breaking and Anna’s clubby steer on Thursday.  By Thursday Memphis was leading, tying up, and acting like a pro. That is the great thing about the Leroy foals, they are super smart and they want to be people pleasers. Memphis just needed to know she wasn’t the alpha, once she got it, she got it. We decided to see if Alvina would trade Memphis out of Kit Kat, but it was a no go, so Kit Kat is still here. Memphis and Kit Kat are ¾ sisters, so Kit Kat will be great for us. Memphis just has a really cool color and markings on top of all the other good stuff. Kade had his last bb game on Thursday (finally) in Warden. His best game yet, he had the first 4 points of the game, and Connell beat Warden. Kade was a rebounding machine.  It helps that he is pretty tall.

Friday Ben, Anna and I got up and checked cows. Then the kids went to school for their last day before Christmas, except Kaine, because they were only watching movies all day so he wanted to stay home and help Ben. Then I ran Ben and Kaine into Othello to get Ben’s pickup from the mechanic. Kaine learned out to catch calves to tag, which is a skill if you have ever jumped out of a moving pickup to run after a calf to catch it and then have their mom right behind you. Ben is really good at it and is freaky fast. Kaine said he caught the slow ones with tame moms. I went and had a hair appt in the morning and then Mom, Toni and I went and got mani and pedis in the afternoon. Dad went with us, then we got Applebeees to go and ran by Tation and Cami house to get dad’s Christmas present and coffees and came home. Mom and Dad had never had mani/pedis before and they seemed to really enjoy themselves. It was really nice to have an afternoon and just do something fun. The kids had done chores, since they are such wonderful children. Mom left them fresh cookies and apple sauce for after school. Marlo was there to help do chores.

Saturday more checking. Then we got the calved heifers in, tagged their calves and hauled them down to circle 7. Alvina came and got her new horse, Memphis, and took her back to Pullman. In the afternoon Anna and Kaine went to Richland to watch a basketball game. We continued to work around the house until chore time. Anna’s retired show heifer Amora calved while Anna was gone. It was backwards so we had to get her in and pull it. Now that we have a good freeze, Toni is getting serious about deworming everything so Kade and Toni got Leroy, who Kade is calling LaRoy (Dale Brisby reference) and Dude done. Kade held LaRoy by hugging his neck, so a super wild stud, but they had to catch the wild man Dude with a piece of string. Dude isn’t as good about the dewormer, maybe because it is gross? Chores were fine. We decided to wait to get a new foal or two in for halter breaking, so things are relatively easy. Just normal stuff with some extra due to the weather.

Sunday was snowy, we had to get some of the heifers that calved in the barn on Sunday, they don’t get up fast enough and get them licked off to keep them warm like the cows. Then we go the herd in and sorted off a new batch of heavy heifers. And put them in the heavy heifer pen. We decided to get the old mares all blanketed, because it is cold. Most of them did pretty good. Smoke, our old trusty dusty pony that we have had her entire long life, was the worst. She didn’t kick us, but she didn’t want a blanket.  The kids helped. Then we put up the lighted letters, let the kids pick their horses and got our annual KT Ranch Christmas pic. The snow wasn’t quite a thick, but it was good. They all picked their 2 year olds that they are working on. Jax elected to hold the letters. Haha. We put straw out for the horses to have some extra protection against the elements.

Next week is Christmas. Where did the time go? With Christmas around the corner a person can get caught up in the commercialization of the holiday, but that isn’t what it is about. The kids have done a great job in the last few weeks volunteering to help where needed. They helped the FFA wrap presents, donated their own funds to the fund raisers, donated their own things or helped pick things out for others that needed them. And by things I mean coats, hats, mittens, things that are needed. November is the thankful month and December is the mindful month. We need to be mindful of what we have, how we can help others, our impact on other people, and overall to be good stewards of the land and of our society.

We are looking forward to a great holiday with family and friends. We are blessed to be able to spend time with our Grandma who is 91. (Those are Christmas pics from last year) Merry Christmas to all!
