And I missed some that Toni had uploaded.

No, the Featured image is not recent, I just thought it was fitting.
Monday Toni and Kicker headed to the NFR for a few days. Grandma Sherri came down to stay with Kade and Jaxsen. Anna and Kaine worked on Firecracker and did chores, Jaxsen did his chore. We blanketed Double since it is getting cold. I picked Kade up from the activity bus, at the end of mom and dads driveway, and we had some banana cream pie and Pina Colada pie that mom made. It was very good. Lots of calves born Monday, the synchronized cows are in full swing. Ben is off for December and is home to check them. Ben worked on more fence in the corn field on Monday to let the cows over to have some fresh. He got most of the way done.

Tuesday Ben finished the extended fence and let the cows have more stalks. Toni and Kicker had 12th row tickets to the NFR on Tuesday, so we all looked for them all night. We did not see them. Jaxsen, Kade and Sherri got mom and I some Christmas hand soap, it smells really good, or so I am told. I can not smell, and it is not COVID related, I have not been able to smell for about 10 years. I had Kade smell it for me. I am told it smells like candy canes. Frank and Firecracker are still in getting worked on so they can move to CA over the weekend. Both are great foals. Frank has been awesome, friendly, great since day 1. Like the day he was born. Firecracker has always been a firecracker, but it makes her entertaining. She is really smart and quick. Frank is like her big brother, keeping her calm and centered. They get to move to CA together so it is all going to work out great.

Toni and Kicker came home Wednesday, like I said, a few days. Sherri stayed to watch Kade play a basketball game. While checking Wednesday morning Ben found an extra calf. One cow that calved was in the second AI group, so she is 3 weeks early, so we are assuming she had twins, but we will DNA the calf to make sure. Dad took Sherri into the game so they got to watch Kade play some b-ball. He is the starting center and getting better and better.

Thursday Toni got initiated back into real life. Not quite first thing, Toni and Ben had to pull a calf out of Toni’s cow, 727. It was a very healthy heifer. 727 was Aied with sexed semen to the club calf bull, so the calf was supposed to be a bull (meaning eventually a steer). Instead, it is a cute, healthy, vigorous heifer with lots of hair. 727 has a way of finding ways to stay near the barn in the winter, so maybe this was her faking us out so she can live in the barn and not in the field. Ben continued to work on fence, watch cows, and do normal ranch stuff. Toni went down and did her chores but didn’t get to see the kids. Thursday Kade had another basketball game, this one in Royal City.

Friday was Kaine’s birthday party, somehow he is 14! Our biggest boy is the size of a man, does the work of a man, but is still our little boy. He had the privilege of going to school then coming home for chores. Uncle Skip drove down and Marlo was there. Ben made ribs, chicken and dutch oven potatoes. Mom made rolls, Apricot pie and sour cream lemon pie, it was all REALLY good. Kaine had a great party. He is kind of a bad age to buy presents for, but acted like he liked everything. We played Phase 10 until about 9 then everyone was tired. We are real party animals.

Saturday morning we got up early and checked, the wind was howling. 839 had a cute heifer calf in some weeds, to protect it from the wind. Then Anna, Kaine and Kade went to the Methodist church to wrap presents for a FFA Community project. Ben and I tagged calves while they were gone. There were a lot to tag. The kids got back and Anna helped us tag the last few, there is still one no tagged one that Ben could not catch. We caught Anna’s show heifer, 006, and led her into the heavy heifer pen. Toni worked and had clients out until chore time. We did our normal chores and got the two foals ready to leave. They were scheduled to leave early Sunday morning. We went down and did chores early, then went to Connell for the Sep-January birthday party, so it was almost everyone. While at the party we got a call that our CA buyers were broke down in Oregon. So they weren’t going to make it early Sunday.

Sunday was Kaine’s birthday, happy birthday Kaine! We checked early again, a few calves. Then the kids went to Connell and picked up Leslie and went to their annual Christmas shopping trip. They went to Bobs Burgers for lunch and got birthday Sundays. Ben and I looked for 839’s calf forever. Then got the heifers in off of the hill and tagged their calves and then hauled them down to circle 7 with the yearlings. Then got the show heifers in and sorted out the non show heifers and hauled them back down to circle 7. Went back and rechecked the pairs, the 2 year olds had hidden their calves down in the Russian Olive trees, so we spent a while looking for them. Then went down to do chores. The people that were picking up Frank and Firecracker had broken down in Oregon, got their vehicle fixed and were still on their way. They decided they wanted to load whenever they got to the ranch, then head back. So we hauled the two foals to my house for a middle of the night pick up. Sometimes ranch life isn’t too glamorous!

I am unclear if this would be on Monday’s blog or Sunday, but the CA buyers got to my house about 1 am. Toni met them out at Scooteney and Horseshoe and led them to my house so they wouldn’t get lost on the gravel road. Toni and Ben loaded the foals and let me sleep. I wasn’t planning on sleeping through it, so I had left my clothes on. Toni has been in good contact with the two families so she was glad to finally meet them. They seemed to really like Frank and Firecracker. Both loaded really well. The halters they brought were too big, so they got to keep the halters we had. We sent them off with a bale of hay, some grain, and hope to see them again in the future.

Two more foals off to their new homes. Wow. Only 5 more to ship out. Once the sold foals are gone we get to start halter breaking the ones we are going to keep. This next week it looks like Memphis is going to be brought in, probably her halter breaking partner will be whichever other foal comes in. We have a bunch of fillies we are keeping so probably one of those. We really have too many we want to keep. A couple of them are priced, but priced high. It is hard to rationalize selling a filly out of an old mare, or an AI foal. You just don’t know when you are going to get that cross again, if ever. We also needed to up our number of Leroy fillies, so we have kept a couple of those as well.

If anyone was wondering, the answer is YES- APACHE R HALI, the good gray mare that Junior Nogueira heals on and is a 2020 AQHA senior heading world Champion and AQHA senior heeling reserve world champion is a ½ sister to our two Apache Blue Boy daughters. Junior has said he has won about 1.5 on that mare. We do have a fancy black 2021 filly for sale out of one of those mares. Our mares have the same look as the Hali mare. For more on this great mare see the good AQHA article on her:
https://www.aqha.com/-/junior-nogueira?redirect=%2Fdisciplines-overview1
We are pretty excited about our 2 Apache Blue Boy daughters that we got from Bridgeman Land & Livestock. The reality is that we are excited about all of our mares, or they wouldn’t be here. Great mares are the cornerstone to any exceptional breeding program- maybe that is why we kept so many fillies this year?

Monday morning 303 had a cute heifer calf. Ben, Anna and Kaine went and picked M815 up at Bryans Meats, yea, we have meat again (other than hamburger). We decided to keep Shi and put Dime back up on our website for sale. Dime is a handful, so if anyone is looking for a handful, she is looking for a home. Kameron brought the heifers down that he bought at the Dixon sale so the kids could decide if they want to show them. They are pretty cute Clubby heifers. There are two of them, and we already have one Clubby to show, so this would allow each of the three older kids to have a Club show heifer. This is on top of their reg show heifers and steers. The twins came down to look at the kids’ steers and they helped do chores. Toni and Anna worked on Whiskey and Star, both did awesome and are already out in the round pen. Mom made apple bread pudding for after chore snack. The twins didn’t love it, but maybe bread pudding is an acquired taste?

Tuesday we had a Hereford bull calf out of 722 and by Flapjack, and 604 had a heifer by Summit. Ben, Anna and Kaine worked on fence and went to Othello to get mom some groceries for pies. Toni emailed me about all the rumors people are telling her about each other, I guess that means everyone is bored?? I told her we should write a series about it. Obviously the names would need to be changed to protect the innocent. Marlo came out and helped do chores, she is out house sitting at Kendel’s house. So we played Texas Holedem.

713T had a cute black ballie calf on Wednesday. After checking Toni and the kids went to Connell to help decorate the show barn for Christmas Eve. Kicker got a nice big tree for them to decorate. We had it in the show barn so there was lots of room. Grandma came out and ate pizza with them and approved how good the show barn looked. She said it was “festive.” They came back and did chores, I stopped on my way home and Mom, dad and I sampled the coconut crème pie.

On Christmas Eve Gloria and Zsa Zsa both calved, both ex-show heifers. We went to Connell for Christmas Eve in the show barn. We had soups and played games and did the white elephant gift exchange. We went home and opened up some presents and then went to bed to wait on Santa. With COVID-19 our Christmas Eve was smaller than normal, but we gave Grandma the best Christmas Eve we could and are thankful for those that could make it, and hope that those that couldn’t make it, also had a very Merry Christmas. The kids also opened up their presents from Cousins Linda and Patricia which were really cool shirts from Egypt with their names embroidered in Egyptian. FYI- Jax already knew some Egyptian, no one knows how. All of the kids thought the shirts were really neat. Grandma Sherri also sent some gifts that Anna and Kaine opened, Grandma Sherri always sends great gifts.

Merry Christmas. Santa brought the kids a lot of great gifts, they opened them all up and then we went to mom and dads for more presents and breakfast, mom made homemade bear claws, French toast casserole and a sausage casserole. It was awesome. Then we went home and Ben finished up the ham and made mashed potatoes, Anna helped him, and Kaine and I straighten up the house. Toni, Kicker, Kade and Jaxsen went to Clarkston for the Meacham Family Christmas. Dad, mom, Skip, Grandma and Uncle Joe came down for Christmas dinner. Mom brought 6 pies, they were all outstanding. Then mom, Kaine, Grandma and I played pinnacle. Dad and Skip went home to watch football. Ben, Anna and Joe went out to look at the steers. It started snowing and we went to do chores in the snow.

Saturday was snowy and cold. We put straw out in the heavy heifer pen and moved the calved heifers out. We tagged calves and moved animals around. Anna and I went down and took pictures of the bulls, and of the calves. Everything was alive and healthy. The bulls are looking good. Even though the weather isn’t the best, we are still getting prospective buyer out looking at the bull selection.

Sunday Evie had a cute bull calf and 522T had a clubby bull calf. Evie was Kade’s show heifer, and 522T we didn’t show, but we have shown some of her calves. This clubby bull calf is adorable and is sure to be in the showstring. We went out and tagged the last few calves so we are caught up. Then we moved the bulls up to the house since the lake was frozen since it is so cold. We put the fat steers in with the Spokane steers, moved the show heifers and steers to their pen, and locked the herd bulls up and put the for sale bulls in their pen. Then we put grass hay out, and the Meachams got home. We all went down and did chores and had more pie.

Monday was frosty and cold, but really not that cold considering it is December. Toni checked and Leapin Lily had a fancy bull calf by KT Small Town Kid 5051. Mom was busy working on embroidering hats and she is making a Eat More Beef patch to put on stocking hats. If you want any custom embroidery work done let mom know, but don’t wait until the last minute because she can’t handle that. Toni got the calendars ready to mail out. Toni and the kids did chores and worked on the foals.

Tuesday morning was still frosty and cold. The cows are actually due today, Anna checked, 633 had a bull, 338 had a bull. Morgan texted asking about sending the fat calves to her with the donkey shipper, so Toni begged Sheena to fit the calves in to get all the proper paperwork to go to Montana. Toni, Dad, Anna, and Kaine loaded the calves and Kaine and Dad took them to Othello. When they were done loading, Toni and Anna went out to check and Autumn hadn’t calved and she had been calving for 3 hours. They got her in, but Toni needed to go to have court on the phone, so Anna stayed to watch her. Ben got home and they ended up pulling a it. It was a healthy Hereford heifer. While the kids helped Ben, Toni did chores with her kids. Toni said Jean and Black Eye are doing really well, but are both bratty babies since they are spoiled and only want to do what they want to do. And they don’t like each other and have jealousy issues. Jean did not feel like she needed to be tied. Black Eye just wants lots and lots of attention and has lots of energy. They really aren’t too bad, but you have to watch out because they will kick each other and bite each other, so a person does not stand in between them.

Wednesday the sun was out, it was a miracle. The halter breaking donkey arrived from Iowa, maybe she brought the sun. Dad, Ben and Kicker went and got more hop poles to build fence. No new calves in the Am. But 534 and 201 both had calves in the afternoon. Anna and Kaine could not find Anna’s calf “Willa” so they spent the afternoon looking for her. They finally found her right before chores. Anna and Toni said Black Eye and Jean are doing great, but they really do hate each other, so you have to be careful to not get to close to the other one. In self-defense they turned Black Eye out. Now he just stands on the outside of the roundpen and gives Mean Jean stink eye. Anna has been working on picking up Jean’s feet so Chad can trim them on Friday. Wednesday Morgan also decided to get one of Leslie’s mares, so Toni begged Sheena again to fit Les’s mare in for paperwork to go to Montana. Les ran the mare over and hopefully everything will get done so the shipper can take them all to Montana.

Thursday morning 341 had an Angus heifer calf and Pinda had a club calf heifer by Fur Trader. We had used sexed semen, so hopefully this is the one and only club heifer, as we were hoping for zero club heifers. She is super super cute and the kids all want her. Except Jax, he graciously said the other three could have her. Toni won her bankruptcy court appeal that they argued Oct 21. Yes, it takes that long to find these things out in the law world. Coco’s dog in CA had 8 puppies. Lots of things going on on Thursday.

Friday the shipper came and got 6 calves to go to Morgan in Montana and one of Leslie’s horses. He had goats, pigs, sheep, etc on the trailer, so Toni and the kids took a tour of the animals. He was 2 hours early, so Toni had to cancel a couple of phone calls and run down to help load while Ben ran to Othello for the paperwork. The calves loaded really well and the trailer was full. 201M had to have her calf pulled, the head was down. She had a clubby bull calf that Jaxsen owns and wants to name Chocolate. He has been informed that the theme is Yellowstone He informed us that he doesn’t care. 635 had a bull calf by Basin Payweight Plus. Chad and Andrew came out and trimmed a few foals. Jean did not think Chad was Anna, so did not like him trimming her feet. After a battle of wills, which Mean Jean lost, they got her done. We had Kaine’s birthday dinner on Friday, meatball subs per his request. Ben makes a fantastic homemade meatball.

Saturday was Kaine’s birthday, happy birthday Kaine. We went out and got all of the calves tagged that had been born all week. Then Ben went and worked on extending the hot fence so the cows could have some more corn stalks. Anna, Kaine and I finally got our Christmas tree up, with all of the bottle kittens in the house I don’t know how long it will stay up. Then we went down to do chores and let Jean out.

Sunday no new calves. Ben had Kaine finished the fence extension and we let the cows over to a new section. We locked the horses in for a few days because there is quite a bit of corn over there. We got two of the three old cows in that are down with the calves and put them in the heavy pen. Toni, Kicker and Kade put grass bales out with the horses and burned the old tree piled down at mom and dads in the yearling pen. The yearling fillies were very helpful. Then we got Dime and Shi in to halter break, we are talking about selling one of them and just keeping one Bishop filly. We shall see what happens.

Kids all had school Monday so Toni was in charge for checking. We had some freezing rain first thing, but it melted off. Nothing new in the AM. She had to run into Walmart in Othello and she said it was a zoo, then Taco Bell was closed so she went to Burger King for lunch. I said after the whole lemon grass scandal I would have starved before I went to Burger King, if you don’t know what I am referring too must Google Burger King and Lemon Grass. Toni had lots of client meetings on top of that. Then when they went to do chores Jag was out in the circle 7 with the weaned calves, the fence was not hot, the fencer would not work. Jag ran through the fence and broke it, so Toni was super impressed with her. There may have been cuss words. Ben came and got the old one to charge the battery and Toni went and got a different solar one from the shed. I got there in time to shut the lid on the fencer, LOL. Ben texted that 218 had twin bull caves by Fur Trader, a black one and a white one. 203 also had bull calf by Coleman Knight. Then we went to Grace’s surprise birthday party, it was just a small family gathering, Grace is our other niece and Tennelle is like our extra sister. Sometimes love is thicker than blood and we are pretty blessed to have this extra “niece.” We can’t believe she is 18.

Tuesday morning the sun was shining. One new bull calf in the AM by Justified and out of a Stunner daughter. Mike came out and butchered two steers, only 7 left to go. Toni and the kids practiced loading the foals that are supposed to leave on the weekend, Shiner, War Bug, Kitty, and loaded Cappy for fun. All of the foals were excellent to load. Kitty is the first of our Canadian foals that we have halter broke and we are pretty impressed with her mind. Cappy is our stallion prospect out Double and our Shadie mare. He is a little spitfire. He is basically a reincarnation of Double, even though Double is still alive. On Tuesday when the halter came off, Anna dropped it on the ground while she worked on Kitty. Cappy picked it up in his mouth and started whipping Anna in the back with it because HE wasn’t done. Everything needs to be on his terms, so at times he can be a challenge. But in a good way.

Wednesday I got a flat tire on my way to work, by mom and dad’s house. Ben came and changed it for me, my hero. Kade texted Toni from the bus, using Toti’s phone, that there were horses out, so she drove around looking for them. There were none out, Kade just didn’t realize which field they were in and thought they were in the wrong one. Anna went out and checked the cows, no new calves. The bottle calf is named Malcom and is brother is Teal, they are villain brothers on the TV Show Yellowstone. Toni and the kids did chores. They loaded Kitty and Shiner again to get them ready to leave. Again they both did great. Especially considering they are basically being loaded in the dark because it gets dark so early.

Thursday was cold. Dad checked the cows in the AM, two new ones. Toni headed back to Yakima for court, possibly staying through Friday. Ben was called that the cows were out in the duck pond and had to run home and get them in and fix fence. When he got home, after he went back to work, there were 2 or 3 new calves including Kade’s cow had a heifer Dark Night and Anna’s cow, Mischief. The kids did chores after school and worked on the foals. Anna is getting tired of Cappy and would like to turn him out. He chases Kitty if he isn’t tied up because he is a jealous critter.

Toni had to stay in Yakima for court again on Friday. In the morning Anna and I checked the cows, Baby Mo had a set of twin Herefords. We grabbed the heifer and she rode around in the Colorado with us until we got done checking. Next, Kaine and I ran Crème and Puff into Sheena at Sagehill vet for a spay and neuter while Anna took care of the calf, “Ash” the brother is “Lee.” Kaine and I got home and went and picked up mom and we went in and got our hair done. Dad went to an Eye dr appt. We picked up Mei Lings on our way home for lunch. After lunch Chad and Andrew came and we trimmed horses the rest of the day. Ben picked up Crème and Puff on his way home and Marlo came out and helped do chores, and hold horses. Kade and Jaxsen got home from school in time to assist as well. Toni rolled in right when it was getting dark but was wearing her court clothes so didn’t help.

Saturday we checked first thing and had a pile of calves. We had someone coming out to look at bulls so we went down and got them and sorted off the sold ones and took them back down. War Bug left on Saturday, so I met Toni down at mom and dads and we loaded him out and sent him on his way. We tagged calves after lunch and got them all caught up. Dad called because Jaxsen had not drained the hose very well at the corral so the yearling colts were out of water. When he got to mom and dad’s for chores he said he might as well go in the house and get it over with- meaning that he needed to go in the house and get the lecture on draining hoses, animal stewardship, weather, etc. Toni and I went down and rearranged animals so that all had water, then had Jaxsen drag the frozen hose back to the house to get it thawed. Then we did chores.

Sunday Kitty and Shiner were leaving early. So we got up early to check cows, they texted they were on their way after 3 new calves, so Ben and Anna took me to my Colorado and I went down, and they continued to check. Toni and I brought Shiner up to the house and noticed Crossfire and Jean running around in the circle. We called them back over and put them in, and put a panel where they had broken some poles. The reality is that Scrat, the big Hereford bull, has been breaking the poles because there are neighbor bulls across Hendricks Rd so bulls have to act like bulls and need to be macho and break fence like jerks. After they left we went and got 5 weanling calves in to feed out for Morgan and Joe. Then Leslie came and took the 4 kids online shopping at Traci’s house for their parents, their annual shopping extravaganza. Toni went home to get her billing done and Ben and I got in heavy heifers. Kicker continued his battle with the beaver, breaking it’s dam and letting the water down. Then we tagged the new calves and Toni and I went down to get two new halter breaking foals in, take some pictures, do chores and wait for the kids. We put Black Eye and Mean Jean in to halter break. We just had to put them both behind the gate, not up the alley. Mean Jean was a little angry about the process but after a baby fit she did really well.

We just have one more foal to ship, this one to Canada, then we can focus on selling the remaining colts. With Kitty leaving Sunday, we are officially out of fillies unless someone convinces us to sell one we have labeled as a keeper. We may convince ourselves because we have quite a few right now, but time will tell. So far we really think this foal crop has been great and will be hard to top in 2021, but lets hope we do!
