Fall = Football, weaning, halter breaking, cattle sales and more

Monday was still in the 80s and it is October. Weather is beautiful, grass is still growing, however, the circles are getting tired of running and keep breaking down. Toni and Tulip, with Kade’s help, worked on Mug, Call and Blaze. Mom, Dad and I went to Kaine’s football game in Connell. Mom and dad brought Jaxsen in to practice on their way. Toni reported that these three are not as easy as the last three, the last three were unusually easy and these three are normal. Men and Anna did cow and show animal chores. Kade went up and helped when he got done helping Toni.

Tuesday the beautiful weather continued. Marty came and picked up Stormin, he is the first foal to leave to his new home. Kade had a game on Tuesday, so Toni worked on the foals then Meachams and mom went to the game. Kade played a good game, they played a hard team. Anna did the cattle chores, Kaine and I did the horse chores, I worked on the foals some more and moved the water and Kaine fed. When we got home Anna, Kaine and I cleaned out the red trailer from the show supplies, so it was pretty late by the time we got in. Ben got home and worked on circles, then they had a picker vs semi accident at work (everyone is ok) so he had to go back. He got home at around midnight.

On Wednesday morning Toni took Wild and Mug into see Sheena. Wild got injured in the eye so needed at lavage and Mug needed travel docs. Tulip went with Mug because it was just the third day of halter breaking. Mug was so good and Tulip was a good sport like always. When she got home she practiced loading Call and Blaze as well. This is only day three in halter breaking, so they are all are doing very well. Toni and mom continued to dr Wild and Absolute throughout the day. With these eye injuries it is recommended that the horse (foal) be medicated 3-4 times per day, so we are doing 4 every day. Anna had an FFA Officer retreat in Quincy after school, so Jaxsen rode the bus home. Toni has been going to get magnetic therapy on her hip, so she had that in the afternoon. She brought the trailer down when she got home, we got to moms around the same time, and we practiced loading the three colts some more. Call and Mug probably would have done a lot better if they had not had the same pickup weekend and got weaned at different times. They are pretty mothered up. After the boys finished chores, they went up and did cow chores. Circle 8 had to be restarted Wednesday night, I guess it is getting tired of running. Mom made a rhubarb custard bar on Wednesday, it was really good.

Thursday the colts were worked on twice, Jaxsen had a makeup game in Ephrata, so Toni worked on them before she left, then I worked on them again when I got home. They did really good. Kade, Kaine and I did horse chores, then the boys went up and helped Anna with the cattle chores. Toni and Jaxsen got home pretty late from their game.

Friday mom and I went to Tennelles and got our hair done in the morning. We doctored the two fillies before we left and when we got back. Dad did not go into work until later in the day. I hooked up the gooseneck and fed the show cattle, so when Anna and Kade got home we could head into Evergreen sale. Marlo, Jaxsen and Toni worked on the colts and did horse chores. Blaze was Marlo’s to work on, and he knows no strangers, he has been a typical Double. Easy and funny. Shasta also came in with her colt, Dun Bug, who we have been trying to wean for a week now. Shasta recognized the trap as soon as she went in the gate, but it was too late. So Toni and Marlo got Dun Bug weaned. The men did the cattle chores. Kaine went to Toppenish for a football game, and caught a ride home with Jade. Kade, Anna and I got to Ellensburg, unhooked the trailer, Anna got in her Queen clothes and we went to the banquet. We had a good time, sat with cousins, Lyyskis, Wanda Burris, cousin Jill. Mom sent lemon bars and rhubarb custard bars for the dessert auction; they were very good. Toni and the men sold the Titan trailer, to cousin Jill’s best friend’s son. We had never met Luke and Eric before but I hear that we know all kinds of the same people so they were at the house super late talking.

Saturday McCall, Stacy, Kathy and Adrian brought Kaine to the Evergreen sale. Kade, Anna and I got up earlyish to have breakfast at the palace with cousins. Toni got up earlyish to doctor the fillies. Wild is getting really bad to doctor. She is not mean, she is just big and wasn’t halter broke before this injury situation, so she just kind of runs a person over. Absolute has been in almost a week longer so is resigned to her fate. The kids all judged, you get a sale credit if you do well, Kade won and received a $500 sale credit, which he used to buy Payton’s heifer. Kaine bought a Steve Jachetta heifer. We bid on a few others. Adrian bought a heifer, and a heifer for her brother. We hauled two heifers back for Kim and a steer back for Mike. We also stopped by Jarmins and picked up two clubby steers, one for us and one for Adrian. We had a great time at the sale talking to people and bidding. The Seldom Rest sale in Michigan was the same time on the same day. We were also able to get 2 heifers for the kids at Seldom Rest. Our good family friend, Ryan Cotton, has been very good to us in sifting through those heifers and helping us select that best heifers in our budget at that sale. Scott and Andrew at Seldom Rest treat the kids great and really help them at the Junior National Show. Jaxsen had a good football game, got some tackles, had fun. He had his special cousin Kasen come watch him (he calls Kasen his mini-me) along with Leslie, Jolene, and Reese. Toni left as soon as the game was over to load out Call with Hunter. Call loaded really well and he was off to his new home. Hunter has been out a bunch to play with Call since he put his deposit down so Call already liked Hunter. Hunter was really surprised at how big Call was. Call and Mug are on the bigger end of our weanlings. They may be the biggest two. Anna also got to go to Homecoming on Saturday night with her boyfriend Lane. McCall got Anna home from the Evergreen and then Anna wen to Toni’s for hair and makeup. Anna looked amazing and Lane looked pretty good too. Anna got to do some teenager stuff and enjoy herself.

Sunday morning Toni loaded out two more colts. Wes and Beth showed up to get the steer Mike bought. Ben made his own birthday lunch. McCall came out and her and Anna worked on the heifers going to the Nile. Marlo came and had birthday lunch with us. Dad was working so not there. Mom made fresh apple pie and rhubarb custard pie. After lunch Toni and Kade went down to halter the next group of foals. Anna and McCall packed for the Nile. Kaine, Ben and I sorted out heifers, Spokane steers and fall show steers and moved a bunch of stuff around. Kale came and picked out his Nile heifer and his mom came with him and bought a heifer. Kale did not like the one Krystal liked, so they needed to get both. Ben had to go back to work to fix a picker right as Kale got there. Anna and Kaine started the cow chores, I went down and helped Toni finish the horse chores. Kade went up and helped Anna and Kaine when he got done. Wild broke her pick line on the last dose of meds Sunday, so a new pick line had to be put in, but there was no new port, so medicating Wild got worse. We also needed new video of Cappy for a gal, so got that. Cappy is another typical Double and every time we work on him, Toni again says she doesn’t want to sell him. Cappy looks like a Double, moves like a Double, acts like a Double. Tons of personality and potential. He is going to be a hard one to sell for us.

We are in the thick of it now. Probably 1/3 done weaning foals, more like 1/4 done (at best) halter breaking foals and thanking Tulip every day for her contribution to the program. It is amazing what a donkey does for the halter breaking. She just helps the foals learn to give. We normally leave her hooked up to the foal once or twice for 15 minutes at the most, that is really all it takes. Every once in a while a foal may need more time with Tulip, but it usually doesn’t take much for the result you get. Tulip is pretty patient and has been a great protector and companion for the foals on top of being useful.

It is once again time for a Molly update. Molly has been cut back to three feedings of grain per day. No, no other foals get that much grain unless they are will Molly. Molly is also shedding out a dark bay or possibly a brown. Mom is very unhappy with this color change and would like Molly to go back to a blood bay. We were told today that we need to be loading Molly because she may want to travel. Maybe she does, maybe she doesn’t. We will be informed when we are informed as to what Molly wants. The reality is that Molly is a really great filly. She could be a spoiled brat, and maybe she is, but she loves all of us so we can’t see any devil in her.

Monday was a beautiful fall day. When Toni went down to doctor Absolute the tube was broken in the lavage. Toni texted Sheena and scheduled to take her in on Tuesday for repair. Mom and Toni doctored Absolute all day without the port. Toni also had court on Monday. Kade and Jaxsen had football practice. Kaine had a game in Connell, Marlo, Leslie, McCall and I all went to it. It was a good game. Ben and Anna went and looked at a couple of steers for Spokane after they got done with chores at the neighbors, he buys bulls from us so they are by our bulls. A guy also came by and bought Kaine’s mini bike on Monday.

Tuesday I had a meeting in Ephrata first thing, so I headed that way. Toni, Mom and Marty took Abs and Absolute in to get her lavage fixed. Because Marty had never been, they made a side trip to Cow Path Bakery to introduce Marty to the sugar heaven. Then they loaded Stormin and Lacey in the trailer since it was at mom and dads and Marty wanted to work on her colt. On my way back to the office I drove by mom and dads and saw a faucet was broke in Annie’s pen, so I called the men and they had me shut off the pump. The circle was already off anyway. Kade had a game Tuesday night, they won 14-12 and Kade ran both touchdowns. Good job buddy! Toni worked on Lacebug, Lilo, and Stormin before she left, and fed Annie. I worked on Lacebuy, Stormin and Lilo when I got home, so they got lots of work on Tuesday. All three tied and lead great. Of the three only Lilo was tied to Tulip, Lacey and Stormin were just born halter broke I guess. Lilo was really good too. Mom and I did the 4^th doctoring on Absolute’s eye. Kaine did the horse chores, Anna did the cow chores. Ben worked on circles. Matres finished bailing our 4^th cutting and got it up.

Happy Birthday dad. Mom made peach trifle for dad’s birthday, it was AWESOME, and I brought home Magills for dinner since dad wanted chicken fried steak. Toni and mom continued to doctor Absolute. Toni had court, which was supposed to be at 2 and she was called at the last min that it was moved to 1, so she had to rush to town. Just football practice on Wednesday, no games. We were also continuing to shop for show animals. We do love shopping for show animals. The men worked on circle 8 and fixed a faucet for us at mom and dads. The three foals are all rockstars. I can’t imagine any other group being this good.

Thursday was a beautiful day. Circle 8 was turned on again, so we had water to move, which is good, water means grass and less hay to feed. The foals were awesome to work on. Mom made peach turnovers, that were AWESOME. Also, on Thursday night we found out Kaine was playing varsity on Friday in College Place. Since it has been a while since I got groceries, I had to rearrange the coolers into the Yukon and arrange with Marlo to bring Butte down on Friday and take the groceries home. Not a big deal since Marlo was able to get them.

Friday was another beautiful September day. Toni went down to Larrys and got the two extra Spokane steers. One looks good, we are hoping he will make a Spokane steer, the other is alright, just an extra Spokane steer. Anna decided she wanted to apply for the Youth Development Program, so her and Toni got her application in on Friday. Chad came out and trimmed up a bunch of horses and Tulip. Since Absolute gets handled 4 times per day, she also got her first trim. She is still in getting her eye worked on. Dad and I went and watched the varsity game in College Place. Marlo came down with dad to take my vehicle, and the groceries home, and I rode with dad. The GPS took us down a windy road through some houses, but it was scenic. Diane also came and watched. We got home around midnight, but it was a good game. Toni and Marlo worked on the foals and Kade and Anna did chores. Marlo is great to have on Fridays because she exposes the foals to new people. Lacey knows no strangers so walked right up to Marlo and put her head on Marlo’s shoulder.

Saturday morning the men took the big boys and Coco duck hunting. It was Cocos first time out, she did good for her first time. Mom and I doctored Absolute’s eye. Anna went to Umapine to help Lane with his cows. Kaine and I got in our cows to sort the couple of calves off that had gotten out. While the cows were going down the alley, which we were not even sorting them just pushing them down, the 40-year-old alley gave a groan and fell over. So, that killed any weekend plans for us. The Meachams went to Jaxsen’s football game and then dropped the boys off and went on to Republic for Toni to speak at the WCA Annual District meeting up in that country that was held at the K Diamond K Dude Ranch. So Kade and Jaxsen came down to help with the fence repair. We did not have any posts big enough, so Kaine and Kade made some out of some logs we had, while Jaxsen and I dug holes, and Jaxsen cut the wire off of the old fence. We got some of the poles off and then tied the fence back up for the night, to our new posts that were planted in the ground and went to do chores. Kaine did the cow chores and Kade, Jaxsen and I went to do the horse chores. Kade and Jaxsen went back up to help Kaine when they got done. Mom and I doctored the eye. I worked on the babies. Kade helped me move the yearlings over with the old horses before he left and then we turned Stormin, Lacebug and Lilo out into the bigger weaning pen. They were happy to be in a bigger pen and ran around and around.

Sunday Anna, Leslie, Jolene and McCall went to the Dixon/Williams club calf sale. Ben did not have to work on Sunday so was out fixing circles early, since 4, 7 and 8 were all broke down. Dad went and picked up Camas from Todd and Kade came down and we continued fixing fence. I went down and mom and I doctored the eye. When Ben got done with circles and Toni got home they helped on the fence. We got the alley fence back up and had a couple of pole remnants so we used them for a section that is broke on Gunners pen. Anna was not home yet, so Kaine and Camas did the show animal chores and helped feed grain. Kade and Jaxsen did chores and then went up to help Kaine and Camas. Toni and I haltered Mug, Call and Blaze. We weaned Wild and Gucci and put Peppy and Ninja in the bigger weaning pen with the other 3. We had a great weekend overall and got a lot done.

Fall is officially upon us. Football, sweatshirts, early evenings, and less mosquitoes prove that we are into fall.

I was still sick on Monday. Toni and the kids went back to work and school. Everyone had fair lag. Toni had court and then got back to help dad start the pump. The primer broke so they did not get it started. When Kade got home from football he went up and him and Toni fixed the primer pump. Kaine had a football game in Royal in the afternoon, Connell won. Maki came and picked up her mare that was being bred to Sagebug. The weaned foals are still not overly happy about being weaned. We also had Absolute hit her eye on something and have been doctoring it, but it wasn’t getting better so we put a call into Sheena about what our next steps are.

Tuesday I was feeling better, but stayed home. Toni had court. Toni went to help dad with pump issues in the morning again. Kade had a game Tuesday in Connell against Royal, he had a big audience, Marlo, the Meachams and mom and dad. Marlo and I did the boys chores and Toni did her chores and then I waited for Kaine to get back from the activity bus so he could help Anna with the cattle chores. Ben worked on circles and fed.

Wednesday I finally made it back to work, I still did not sound great, but felt fine. Wednesday was a fairly normal day, chores, football practice, etc. Toni had more court. The weaned foals started to settle down and really started eating good.

Thursday Toni took Abs and Absolute to the vet. We have been doctoring Absolute eye and it was not getting better, so she went in to see Sheena and get a lavage put in. Mom and Toni had to push her onto the trailer. Toni went and picked her up around 5, so the boys and I set up a pen for her. Absolute now gets doctored 4 times per day.

Happy Birthday Kade, on Friday Kade turned 14. When Toni and mom doctored Absolute’s eye, it became apparent that Abs was in heat, so Abs and Absolute got moved back to the corral until we could move Leroy. We had a guy show up on Friday to look at fillies, so mom called me and mom and I walked around and showed him the few fillies we have left. Jaxsen had a game on Friday, so Kade got to go watch Jaxsen play football in Royal for his birthday. We also moved Leroy up to Toni’s house and Slick back with the other riding horses, so Leroy was not next to Abs and Absolute. We took Twiggy and Zoie with their colts back to Mom’s and weaned Blaze. He was the last one we needed to wean with the first group.

Saturday the Meachams got to go and watch a WSU game, lots of fun except WSU Couged it. Kaine and Anna went and helped Aram with his steer and heifer in the morning. Mom and I doctored Absolute in the morning, then mom, dad and Skip with to town for lunch, so Anna helped me when she got back. After lunch Anna and McCall went to Ellensburg to look at some steers, and Kaine and I worked the bull calves. Then we did chores.

Sunday we had a birthday party for Kade and Dad, but dad had to end up going to work, so he was not at the party. Kade got lots of great things, Toni said for playing and not working so she was not impressed. Like fishing lures, roping dummies, things that I guess a 14 year old boy needs. After the party Lane showed up and asked Anna to homecoming. Then Toni and I went down and started halter breaking. Kaine went with Daisy and Aram to Tri Cities to ask Camas to homecoming. Ben, Lane and Anna worked a few heifers and Kade and Jaxsen came down and did chores. We haltered 3 foals and only one got hooked to the donkey. All three were great for their first day. Hopefully our whole halterbreaking season goes this well.

Fall is officially upon us. S Football, sweatshirts, early evenings, and less mosquitoes prove that we are into fall. It is always exciting to get the foal crop in and see how they do with the halterbreaking and added pressure. We are one pen short on halterbreaking because we have been informed by the head boss that the Unsinkable Molly Brown gets her own pen. Ninja is with her, but nothing else is going in that pen, so we hear. If anyone has questions on foals that are available or if you are looking for a bull, heifer, or steer, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We just had a repeat buyer reach out yesterday asking about a colt. We are going to wean him and make sure he will work for her, as we know her well, before she comes over. November is the month to remind us to be thankful for the many positive things happening in our life.

Monday was windy and warm for November. The corn field was done being harvested, so it is time to move the cows over, and work them. They are ready to go. We had email on Shi Monday morning, then a Facebook message asking if he could stop by, so Toni thought she had two people coming, but it was one. I did not know she had been talking on the phone with someone and thought it was all the same group. The guy looking came in a semi, but it was all good. Toni just brought him through the double gates on Hendricks. The only confusion was that the horses in the pasture thought the semi should be hauling hay so were surrounding it and had to be asked to move when he was ready to go. Kade had basketball practice after school. Jaxsen got to help with chores before he left, and told his mom that Kaine and Anna let him get hurt. I said I did not know how him running face first into a gate was a someone else issue. LOL Gen Again left on Monday, and headed to Oklahoma. His shipper was a little late getting there due to the high winds, but Gen loaded great in the dark. Anna’s club calf heifers from CA got here after dark, they actually got to Connell, and then Ben and Anna went and got them after chores. So we had a pretty busy Monday. None of us got home very early. Luckily we are getting used to the dark and have all dug out our headlights.

Late Monday night our great uncle Don lost his battle with cancer. He got pneumonia late last week, and due to his already weakened immune system he was not able to fight it off. Don was 87 years old. Don was a great uncle and we all miss him. We have been very blessed to have such a tight knit family, growing up our great uncles and great aunts were just another set of grandparents. Our second cousins were just another set of cousins. Uncle Don lived in Hermiston so we were able to see him pretty frequently. We are thankful for the time we had with him.

Tuesday morning Kaine went with Kelten before school to lift weights. The kids are all growing up way too fast. I told Toni I wanted a ragdoll kitten from Marcy for my birthday. She told me I have too many cats…. She found it extremely amusing. She is just so funny. She may have gotten me one, but the $300 cost (which is cheap for this type of cat) was just too much for her. The bus has been getting the kids home late, they switched the route around so they are the first ones on and last ones off, or something like that?? So they have not had enough time to get chores done before dark. We are really looking forward to Anna getting her license on Thursday and being able to drive everyone so they get home an hr earlier. Frank and Susie are in getting halter broke, but being Double babies, that was basically done when they were born. Toni is getting to have an easy week.

Wednesday morning was brisk, but it was a sunny day. Kaine and Kelten went and lifted weights early in the morning again. Toni did her chores early, Kade had a basketball game after school. Frank followed Toni into the shed during his walk about Wednesday, I guess he was just going to help himself to the feed. He is quite the character.

Happy 16^th Birthday Anna! Thursday morning Ben took Anna to Moses Lake to get her driver’s license. I am not old enough for this. They then went out to eat and dallied around, so she never made it to school, but you only turn 16 once. However, as a fun birthday treat they built fence in the corn field for the afternoon. Kade had another basketball game, they won Wednesday and lost on Thursday, but he played great both days. Anna wanted chicken teriyaki for dinner, so I had uber eats drop it off at work. And Door Dash brought burgers for the rest of us.

We had lost another member of our family on Thursday, Ben’s brother’s wife, Trisha Gail, passed away. Trisha and Chad lived in Hermiston about 15 years ago and worked for Uncle Don and his twin brother, Uncle Doug. So we used to get to see them frequently, and in more recent years just annually, or biannually, depending how frequently we got to make a run down there. We all grew close with them and kids when they lived up here.

Happy Birthday Toni. Anna got to drive to school for the first time, exciting. Toni did not get to do anything new with her new age. I took Lynn into Sheena to get an ultrasound. No puppies, so we are all sad about that. Then Whitney and I took Anna and friends to Richland for nails and dinner. The boys did chores, Toni helped even though she was supposed to take the day off for her birthday. She did go out and ride her horse for a bit alone and have some quiet time. She is in the middle of working on a bankruptcy motion, so really just had a normal day. Benjamina and Kit Kat came in and started halter breaking. Benjamina is a power house, but is super smart. Kit Kat is out of Leroy and Izzy, so she is a Double Leroy combo which has been really good. Toni is trying to claim that Kit Kat is one of hers.

Saturday we worked cows and turned them out on the cornstalks. Pintos came and got Slugger in the morning, it was foggy most of the way for them. Brock and Renee came and looked at Shi in the afternoon and bought her. We now only have a few weanlings for sale, and Jackpot. Jaxsen had basketball in Moses all afternoon. Kade got a mild concussion at bb on Friday so had to rest all day Saturday with Mom. Toni, Kicker, and Jax got to go to Michael’s Bistro for dinner Saturday night between the bb games. Jax was the starting center for the second game as the tallest kid, Sam, wasn’t there and Jax is the second tallest. Even though we think he is small, he is actually tall for his age.

We also started calving on Saturday. The Hereford bull calf is a few weeks early, but is doing ok. He is living in the barn with his mom. She is a really good cow, but is a dog hater, so we have to be really careful around her to keep the dogs out. This bull calf is an AI calf.

Anna, Kaine, Ben and I finished up the cows, heifers we bought and steers we bought on Sunday. We weaned the three summer calves and turned the bulls out into circle 4. We had the big party Sunday at noon for Toni, Coco and Anna. Mom and I gave Toni some custom Hey Dudes with Rocky on one side and Dude on the other. They are really cool. After lunch we wormed the riding horses and turned them out into the corn field with the cows. We moved Gunner down by the house and put the three old horses at my house in his pen, Cad, Shimmer and Cleo. Toni came down and we hauled Tuilp and Dream Truffle (the mini filly the kids are keeping) to moms, and put three heifers in the back of the little 4 horse trailer to haul down with the other weanling calves. Lightening Bug still has a bad leg, but we turned her out with the weanlings to get her out of the mud. We are still hopeful to see her improve.

We were pretty excited that we got the papers on our little bay colt. We had bought Shorty bred with an understanding of who she was bred to. The DNA came back she was bred to a different stud- LW Playguns Diamond. AQHA has been really great to us and helped us work through this to get papers for him. He is a super well bred colt with Young Gun, Freckles Playboy , Fanta Lena, and much more. The colt is named KT Ima Freckled Son if anyone is interested in a really well-bred bay colt. We also have the last Colonel colt left out of Blue. He is priced a touch high, but that is because we think he is worth it. He is one of those just really cool colts that is going to be easy to break, but still have some style. Other than that we are down to fillies that are actually priced high because we don’t care if they sell. They are the fillies that we would like to keep, know we can’t keep them all, so priced accordingly. As always, we welcome visitors if anyone wants to come look at the foals.
