Another week in the books.

Monday some of the kids went back to school, and Ben had to go back to work after his long break. But, it is never long enough. We had a very reasonable list of things we thought Ben could get done while he was off of work and even though he worked his butt off, the list is not done. Mike Chubb came out and butchered the last of our fat steers, Toni and Channie went down to point out the right ones. Then they went out and checked cows. No new calves in the AM. Anna started Drivers Ed Monday, so after school she had to run home and get on her zoom meeting. Toni and the boys did chores. Anna was still on her zoom class when I got home. Ben and Kicker texted that Kade’s cow he had bred to the Char bull calved, he had a cute bull calf, soon to be a steer. Kade was really hoping for a heifer, but we weren’t going to let him keep it, so not sure what his plan was if it was a heifer. 803T also calved, she had a fancy Hereford heifer. Ben said when he got in one more Hereford cow was calving, so Anna, Kaine and I went and checked her after dinner. Another cute heifer calf. I was hoping one would have twins, 806T lost her calf Sunday night and she would really like one. But, no twins. Toni is still really busy with court cases. AND, she is on the cover of the Ruralite this month, and there is a really nice article about her in it.

Tuesday morning Anna and Channie went and checked, 802M had an Angus heifer calf. Anna had her first drive on Tuesday, so after she logged onto school Channie rode with her in for her drive. Mary brought her home, or Anna drove Mary’s car to our house, for part of her drive. Toni, Channie and the boys did chores, Anna had Drivers Ed Tuesday night again. Toni and Channie tried getting anything salvageable out of the old saddle shed at mom and dads, the roof started leaking and some of the saddles got wet, and a lot of the stuff in it.  It is pretty nasty so not sure we are going to get much out of it. The other big decision is the commercial freezer. We decided we need more freezer space so trying to decide what to get and where to put it. We are looking at all options available.

Wednesday Anna spent a few hours checking the cows and talking to the calves. No new ones. Anna had Drivers Ed again in the evening. Toni, Channie and the boys did chores. Kaine and Kade had to climb to the top of the stack to get hay off. Toni asked them if they did not plan appropriately and knock some off earlier. They said they use this as exercise to climb to the top of the stack. So they got another safety talk, they get them frequently. Boys can be scary.  After chores the three boys and Channie practiced their roping, it sounded to me like the two boys practiced roping Jaxsen, and Channie spent her time getting the ropes coiled back up.  Toni is trying to organize the front saddle shed now that she has given up on the old saddle shed. Jaxsen spills lots of grain doing his one chore, which is to feed the old horses.

Toni got to check on Thursday, but there were no new calves. And it was foggy. We ordered an outdoor walk in freezer for all of the beefs that are in at Bryans, the two from last week are getting cut up, so are available for out of the freezer price. But, there is still one grass and two grain fed for next week if you want to give your own cutting instructions. We sold another bull on Thursday to a great repeat customer. Channie and Toni made a bosal from the pieces they found in the shed for Anna to use on Jag, Jag was not thrilled. Toni tried it on Shady first and she was good with it for a little grain. Rocky broke part of the KT Ranch sign and the end of the driveway digging to fight with the bulls across the road. Toni is blaming the other bulls, LOL.  Rocky is never to blame. Scrat had also gotten the blue gate off the hinges, but we are wise to that game and also tie the gates, so the gates don’t go down if they get knocked off of their hinges.  The boys are continuing to practice roping. Jaxsen worked out a cease fire with them. Things were getting a bit rough. One boy would try to head the other to heal, so then Jax would arm himself with sticks, a crowbar, things of that nature. Luckily they are under constant supervision because of this type of behavior so no children were hurt in their shenanigans. Anna was there on Thursday for chores so got exposed to the boys’ roping. She was not amused.  The family also said goodbye to Chanie as she was heading home on Friday. It was nice to have her for this short visit.

Friday was nice in the morning and then rained. Toni was going to take the bull 922 and Slider, the colt, in for a semen check (on bull) and health and coggins on colt to go to Canada, but Sheena’s battery died in her semen checker, so only Slider went in. Slider had not been loaded in a while, and he did not think he should go by himself. So it took a while for dad, Toni and Kade to load him, but they got him. Luckily we still have Sonny, the old gelding, so he got to go to the vet too. Slider did really well at the vet’s office, especially since he hasn’t been anywhere. He is a really fun colt.  Toni practiced loading him when they came back and he did much better.  We had three calves on Friday, 717T had a Hereford bull, 533 had an Angus heifer and 639 had an Angus bull. Channie went back home to Pocatello on Friday.

Saturday morning we checked cows and then Anna and I went to Grandmas, Anna drove, and took Grandma her calendars and Kaine and Ben went to Othello to get Kaine’s hunting license and some parts for Kaine’s bike. Ben and Kaine brought home Checos for lunch. 717T’s calf was not nursing very good, so after lunch Anna and I went and go them in and put them in the barn so we could watch them. Ben and Kaine worked on Kaine’s bike. Kicker went down to mom and dads and put out grass bales and cleaned up some more out back with the tractor. Kicker also cut off the poles we had used to fix some fence that were sticking out on the road side of the fence. It is much easier for those poles to be cut with a chain saw vs Toni’s reciprocating saw. Toni had some law work to do. Before chores Anna, Kaine, Kade and Toni rode  Jitter, Jag and Friday around for a while. The weather was really nice.  Muddy, but nice.; We also moved Whinney over to the old horse pen and put Payton back over in the pasture. She needed to gain a little weight back after raising the “Twins.” We also bought a mare at the Eugene sale on Friday night, and she showed up a Saturday night. Her registered name is Miss Hollowpont and dad renamed her barn name to “Shorty” from Missy. She is short but stout. She is also used to a herd setting because she came out of the corral ready to rumble and establish that she is not the lowhorse on the pecking order.

Sunday we had two groups of people come out to look at foals. Toni and Kicker took the boys to Richland to get their new puppy that Shannon got for them. It is a cute lab female. So she helped me sort out the sold foals before she left and then they headed out. Ben and Anna tagged calves and got in heavy heifers. Then Anna and Kaine went and checked the cows and Ben cleaned out the heavy heifer pen and the pen that Pocket and Tulip the donkey is in. John stopped by and he went with us to check cows and then to do chores and look at Shorty and the other horses. Marlo came down and helped with chores and brought brownies. Mom also made us Lemon Curd cheesecake.

Another week in the books. Dare we say that the weather has been awesome for January? Or is that jinxing it? Good weather makes us want to show off those foals we have left for sale. Come out and take a look if you are still in the market for a foal.

So far we really think this foal crop has been great and will be hard to top in 2021, but lets hope we do!

Kids all had school Monday so Toni was in charge for checking. We had some freezing rain first thing, but it melted off. Nothing new in the AM. She had to run into Walmart in Othello and she said it was a zoo, then Taco Bell was closed so she went to Burger King for lunch. I said after the whole lemon grass scandal I would have starved before I went to Burger King, if you don’t know what I am referring too must Google Burger King and Lemon Grass. Toni had lots of client meetings on top of that. Then when they went to do chores Jag was out in the circle 7 with the weaned calves, the fence was not hot, the fencer would not work. Jag ran through the fence and broke it, so Toni was super impressed with her. There may have been cuss words. Ben came and got the old one to charge the battery and Toni went and got a different solar one from the shed. I got there in time to shut the lid on the fencer, LOL. Ben texted that 218 had twin bull caves by Fur Trader, a black one and a white one. 203 also had bull calf by Coleman Knight. Then we went to Grace’s surprise birthday party, it was just a small family gathering, Grace is our other niece and Tennelle is like our extra sister.  Sometimes love is thicker than blood and we are pretty blessed to have this extra “niece.” We can’t believe she is 18.

Tuesday morning the sun was shining. One new bull calf in the AM by Justified and out of a Stunner daughter. Mike came out and butchered two steers, only 7 left to go. Toni and the kids practiced loading the foals that are supposed to leave on the weekend, Shiner, War Bug, Kitty, and loaded Cappy for fun.  All of the foals were excellent to load. Kitty is the first of our Canadian foals that we have halter broke and we are pretty impressed with her mind.  Cappy is our stallion prospect out Double and our Shadie mare. He is a little spitfire. He is basically a reincarnation of Double, even though Double is still alive.  On Tuesday when the halter came off, Anna dropped it on the ground while she worked on Kitty. Cappy picked it up in his mouth and started whipping Anna in the back with it because HE wasn’t done. Everything needs to be on his terms, so at times he can be a challenge. But in a good way.

Wednesday I got a flat tire on my way to work, by mom and dad’s house. Ben came and changed it for me, my hero. Kade texted Toni from the bus, using Toti’s phone, that there were horses out, so she drove around looking for them. There were none out, Kade just didn’t realize which field they were in and thought they were in the wrong one. Anna went out and checked the cows, no new calves. The bottle calf is named Malcom and is brother is Teal, they are villain brothers on the TV Show Yellowstone. Toni and the kids did chores. They loaded Kitty and Shiner again to get them ready to leave.  Again they both did great. Especially considering they are basically being loaded in the dark because it gets dark so early.

Thursday was cold. Dad checked the cows in the AM, two new ones. Toni headed back to Yakima for court, possibly staying through Friday. Ben was called that the cows were out in the duck pond and had to run home and get them in and fix fence. When he got home, after he went back to work, there were 2 or 3 new calves including Kade’s cow had a heifer Dark Night and Anna’s cow, Mischief. The kids did chores after school and worked on the foals.  Anna is getting tired of Cappy and would like to turn him out. He chases Kitty if he isn’t tied up because he is a jealous critter.

Toni had to stay in Yakima for court again on Friday. In the morning Anna and I checked the cows, Baby Mo had a set of twin Herefords. We grabbed the heifer and she rode around in the Colorado with us until we got done checking. Next, Kaine and I ran Crème and Puff into Sheena at Sagehill vet for a spay and neuter while Anna took care of the calf, “Ash” the brother is “Lee.” Kaine and I got home and went and picked up mom and we went in and got our hair done. Dad went to an Eye dr appt. We picked up Mei Lings on our way home for lunch. After lunch Chad and Andrew came and we trimmed horses the rest of the day.  Ben picked up Crème and Puff on his way home and Marlo came out and helped do chores, and hold horses. Kade and Jaxsen got home from school in time to assist as well.  Toni rolled in right when it was getting dark but was wearing her court clothes so didn’t help.

Saturday we checked first thing and had a pile of calves. We had someone coming out to look at bulls so we went down and got them and sorted off the sold ones and took them back down.  War Bug left on Saturday, so I met Toni down at mom and dads and we loaded him out and sent him on his way. We tagged calves after lunch and got them all caught up. Dad called because Jaxsen had not drained the hose very well at the corral so the yearling colts were out of water.  When he got to mom and dad’s for chores he said he might as well go in the house and get it over with- meaning that he needed to go in the house and get the lecture on draining hoses, animal stewardship, weather, etc. Toni and I went down and rearranged animals so that all had water, then had Jaxsen drag the frozen hose back to the house to get it thawed. Then we did chores.

Sunday Kitty and Shiner were leaving early. So we got up early to check cows, they texted they were on their way after 3 new calves, so Ben and Anna took me to my Colorado and I went down, and they continued to check. Toni and I brought Shiner up to the house and noticed Crossfire and Jean running around in the circle. We called them back over and put them in, and put a panel where they had broken some poles. The reality is that Scrat, the big Hereford bull, has been breaking the poles because there are neighbor bulls across Hendricks Rd so bulls have to act like bulls and need to be macho and break fence like jerks. After they left we went and got 5 weanling calves in to feed out for Morgan and Joe. Then Leslie came and took the 4 kids online shopping at Traci’s house for their parents, their annual shopping extravaganza. Toni went home to get her billing done and Ben and I got in heavy heifers. Kicker continued his battle with the beaver, breaking it’s dam and letting the water down. Then we tagged the new calves and Toni and  I went down to get two new halter breaking foals in, take some pictures, do chores and wait for the kids.  We put Black Eye and Mean Jean in to halter break. We just had to put them both behind the gate, not up the alley. Mean Jean was a little angry about the process but after a baby fit she did really well.

We just have one more foal to ship, this one to Canada, then we can focus on selling the remaining colts. With Kitty leaving Sunday, we are officially out of fillies unless someone convinces us to sell one we have labeled as a keeper.  We may convince ourselves because we have quite a few right now, but time will tell.  So far we really think this foal crop has been great and will be hard to top in 2021, but lets hope we do!

We have a lot to be Thankful for.

It is a good thing we got most of our riding in over the weekend, we woke up Monday to a skiff of snow. Then it rained and snowed most of the morning. The kids were all back at school on Monday. Ben had the week off, his work gave them the whole week off for Thanksgiving, so Dr Wisse came out to bangs vaccinate. Toni and Ben had a whole crew, Kendel, Toby, Kolton, Scarlett, and Emma (Toni’s office person). They got them done in record time and pushed them back down to the alfalfa field.  We had gotten the heifers in on Sunday, so they were all at the corral.  Ben had them penned and ready to go. Kendel and Toby brought their two down as well, and those two were done first. Kolton had a great time helping “Uncle Ben” work the chute. Toni then took the gooseneck to mom and dads, where the kids were already mostly done with chores, and practiced loading King, for his trip on Tuesday.

Tuesday Toni and Kicker left early to head to the Dusty area, they took Ollie back to Jeannie and King up to Tim Johnson for training. Toni had a meeting with a judge and the Army Corps of Engineers, which was the purpose of going.  And then she brought back 4 pigs for Anna’s birthday, Anna is really excited but the boys don’t think it is fair. She did let them help her name them. Ben is also not excited.  Toni also brought back a pony and dog food. Kicker wasn’t excited about taking 2 animals up and bringing 5 back. Also on Tuesday our good friends at Western Pleasure Guest Ranch brought us a broodmare named Rosie. Since we already have a Rosie we are calling her Rosie B because she is bay. She is open for 2021, so we won’t get a foal out of her until 2022. But she is a great addition to the broodmare herd.

Wednesday Kade and Jaxsen had a half day and Anna and Kaine were only online, so Toni went and got them Mei-Lings. Anna and Kaine went to her house to eat. Kade and Jaxsen were already fighting so Toni sent Kade with Anna and Kaine when lunch was over.  Dad and Ben went to Yakima to get more hop poles so we can finish the weaning pen.  We only have 50 feet left and want to get it done in 2020 so we can start new fencing projects in 2021. We put out a few big bales, but the big pen needed to clean theirs’ up so we didn’t do too much with the tractor.

Happy Thanksgiving! Really this is a great year to be thankful for what we do have. We are lucky to have a close-knit family that is supportive and caring. We are thankful for our lifestyle and love of livestock.  We are thankful for our wonderful friends, customers, and supporters. We are thankful that our family is healthy.  We are thankful for so many things.

Thanksgiving was at Toni and Kicker’s and included copious amounts of food, with two wonderful briskets- one hereford and one angus, both grass fed.  After eating and watching the dog show, which we loved watching, we went down and loaded out Rosie the foal, out of Rosie the mare and Double. We also got Queenie back, a mare out of Cleo and Genuine Dun It to add to our broodmare herd.  Baby Rosie loaded like a pro and she was off to her new home. Chores got done and everyone was full from our big dinner.

Friday we shipped out Blue Bug to his new home. Toni, Kicker, and the boys headed to Clarkston for the Meacham Thanksgiving.  We got the bulls in out of circle 3 and sold three 2020 bull calves. Anna and Kaine got the show calves tied up in the barn.  We checked the cows and made a heavy list for Toni on Monday. Toni likes to have a list. We brought Leroy and Pinky to the house. We hauled Leroy home and put Pinky out with the mares. Kendel sold her cow and heifer, so she got her cows in out of the corn field. She thought she might have the other cow sold so we left the cow in the corral. Our Friday chore girl, Marlo, came and she worked on Star Solider, I worked on Kitty, and Anna fed down the driveway. Kaine stayed and helped Ben with the cattle chores. Then Marlo did Jaxsen chores and we continued to the corral. We moved Hottie up to the house with the old horses, put Leroy in Hottie pen and moved Pocket and Colonel both up a pen. Leroy is NOT happy to be locked in. Marlo came down and had dinner with us and we played Texas Holdem and Spoons.

Saturday we had another repeat buyer come out and look at the bulls, they bought Anna’s bull, Theodore. Then Anna, Kaine and I rode and pushed the bulls back down. We checked the cows and Ben and the kids rearranged the straw in the barn. We had some unexpected people show up to look at foals, but they wanted a pali or black yearling colt and we don’t have any left for sale. The kids tied up the steers and heifers, Morgan came over to look at them, so the kids and Morgan stayed and messed with the steers while I went and showed the horses.  Morgan, Coco and the kids came up and did chores. Dad and Kaine ran into Timeout pizza and got us pizza for dinner. Morgan and Anna went home and let the steers and heifers go. Kicker, the boys and Papa Berry went to the mountains and rode Razers on Saturday, Toni and Grandma Sherri went shopping

Sunday Toni, Kicker and the boys came home. Ben, the kids and I went and got new straw. Thank you, Tim and Brian, for the straw. It had to be hand loaded and hand unloaded in the barn. We were pretty close to Othello so went through the Checos drive through on our way home. At chore time we turned Star Soldier out and got Cappy in for halter breaking. Kitty is still in and doing great. We did our chores and put out hay.  This has been a wonderful beginning to winter with our calving started a little early. We shoot for Dec 1, but already have a few calves on the ground. Nothing makes a person happier that seeing a newborn. So far the calves have been lively little buggers.
