It is insane to think that we are looking at the end of 2023. How has the year gone by this fast? I guess time doesn’t slow down when we are having fun.

On Monday Ben was home to check cows with Anna and then he tagged calves. Which was good because we had been moving things out of the bedroom all weekend and did not get any of the calves out in the circle tagged. He texted he was out of tags. The kids and Ben did chores. Toni and her family went to Vegas for the NFR. I hear they had a good Monday. They went to South Point and watched roping, which Kade was really excited about.

Happy 16^th birthday Kaine. Toni got him a gift card to Applebees for Date night, since he hates the song Fancy Like. Mom reported that when he opened it Kaine said, “they think they are funny don’t they??” Yes, why yes we do. Ben and I got him a leveler kit for his pickup, that did not work on his pickup, so he is now going to sell it on marketplace. Him, Kade and their friend Cyson worked on it for a few days before it was determined it would not work. Dan was out working on my floors again, he is almost done with this winter project, just one more day left. Kaine helped me move some things back to the bedroom while Anna and Ben made chicken fried steak and onion rings. Kaine had two of his cows calve on his birthday, both bull calves. Toni and family went to the rodeo and had a great time. Toni always likes to say that NFR is the superbowl of rodeos. Her and Kade also went to Cowboy Christmas as the convention center and had a great time.

On Wednesday Ben worked on the mixer for the shower, I guess it mixes the hot and cold water?? It was leaking behind the shower. Dan was out to finish the floors. Dad took Red into commercial tire to get “new shoes” as dad put it and the oil changed. We are having lots of calves every day, the AI cows are calving and the ones bred to the bulls. Toni and family came home from Vegas. They were there by chore time. The dogs all missed them a bunch.

Thursday was Jaxsen’s last basketball game, the boys played well but they had a trick ball that would not go in the basket. Jaxsen played really well, especially since he hadn’t been to practice since the week before. He was disappointed they didn’t’ win but overall they had a great season and we are proud of him for getting out there and playing. Cammie got herself stuck in a circle track on Thursday, so Toni, Kade and dad got her out. Then she walked into the corral and waited for Toni to give her grain. We feel pretty confident that she will be fine. When she was wedged in we were all a bit worried, but someone she came out of it fine. Kaine went and got a haircut on Thursday. Now Kade and Kaine both have mullets. We have told them that a mullet is not cool. They disagree. Toni also got Capone and Baby Blackie in so we could get them worked on a few times before they left on Saturday. They are both pretty easy to catch and deal with, the mud was the biggest factor. The boys put a bale of straw in the round pen and it barely dented the mud collection. It did give the foals a nice, warm, dry spot, but it was still not ideal.

The sun was out on Friday. Toni, Marlo and the kids did chores, I went and stayed with grandma. Toni and Marlo got Baby Blackie and Capone in, worked on them and practiced loading them to leave on Saturday morning. Baby Blackie had never been loaded before, but really did quite well. Capone was a typical Gunner colt and would throw himself into the trailer. Everything he does, he does whole heartedly. Both were great. Baby Blackie has always been a Marlo favorite so she really worked on her a bunch.

Foals loaded great on Saturday and headed to their new home in La Pine. We had a handful of new calves to tag on Saturday, and we cleaned out the heavy heifer pen and turned all those pairs out. Toni and Kade fixed the hot fence at their house. I brought the red trailer down on Saturday and Toni and I practiced loading Halo and Mouse and For practiced loading himself. Ben, Kaine and Kade put out grass bales with the horses. We had Kaine’s birthday party Saturday night, and Kendra and Lane both came to it. So we all got to meet Kendra. It was an exhausting day for Leo.

More babies on Sunday to tag. The ram was trying to distract cows while Ben was tagging and got chased around the pickup. The ram’s owners showed up on Sunday and finally picked him up. Trena and Kenny from Tonasket came on Sunday a little before noon and bought Mouse and Halo, Mouse is Trenas and Halo is Kennys. They also both loaded great. Ben and Anna got the steers and heifers in out of the alfalfa field to sort off and weigh the heavier ones for a buy looking for some show steers. They kept them in and are waiting to hear back. Toni and Kade had wormed most of the horses left out in the pasture when I got down there. Then we got For and Ghost in to halter break. Toni tells be we have to continue in the mud, the halter breaking fairy has not shown up and they are not doing it themselves. Added to the fact that the foals just keep growing and getting bigger, so not easier to halter break. We are down to 8 left to get done, so not terrible. I had taken Rosie back to my house to Tulip is going to have to get the last 8 done herself. Hopefully they aren’t going to be bad.

Another busy week here, the NILE show, homecoming, weaning and halter breaking, trying to keep up with chores and feeding, shipping foals, what is next?

Bright and early Monday morning Anna, Ben and McCall headed to Billings Montana for the Nile Cattle Show. They got there and got checked in. Toni had court. Dad and Mom headed to Addy to get Dad’s new side by side, or new to him but used, from Gary and Ruth. Monday was the start of homecoming week at school and Kade participated in the homecoming events at the assembly. Toni and I hooked the three foals to the three donkeys Monday night, Basil got Capone, Rosie got Bailey and Tulip for Mercades. These are three pretty big foals. Capone is the size of a yearling already and the other 2 aren’t small. We are thankful for donkeys. Very thankful. Toni picked Kade up from school to do horse chores and then ran him back in for drivers ed. Kicker was fixing circles so Kaine ran up to do cow chores after he got home from practice.

On Tuesday we turned the circle off and dad drove his new side by side up to the pond and out into the circle. He had fun. At the Nile Anna showed Mini Herefords, the mini-Hereford bull she showed won his division and the heifer got 3^rd in her class. She had fun. I saw on Facebook that Kade participated in the homecoming events again. Good job buddy and having good school spirit. Jaxsen had a game, they beat Othello, Jaxsen played great. Mercades did not need to get tied to the donkey on Tuesday, I led her all over one handed while we moved the colts around. Capone was tied to Basil again and Bailey to Rosie. Kade drove after school then had drivers ed. Kaine went up to help with cow chores after he got done with horse chores. Kaine forgot to let the kittens out on Tuesday and they were little devils when we got home.

On Wednesday Mom and Toni went to see grandma, she has moved over to the rehab. Morgan and Tel came to the Nile to watch Anna show Char and hang out with Ben, Anna and McCall. Tel preferred Ben but Morgan would not let him keep him. I did get a text congrats on the grandbaby, how old do you people think I am?? Anna had fun showing the char heifer on Wednesday. I think they were third in their class in the Jr Show, I think third in showmanship and middle of the class in open. They did great, she showed really well and looked really good. Kade’s PVF heifer came on Wednesday over to Connell, Joe and Kade evaluated her at great extent. Toni was given some mixed soft Australian licorice when she took Kade to get his heifer, so she was happy. Kade didn’t do the horse chores since he was picking up his heifer and then had drivers ed, so Kaine did horse chores and then went to help with cow chores. Jaxsen is still just doing water. We tied Bailey to Basil and Capone to Rosie on Wednesday and led Mercades. We then let Basil and Tulip out with the other foals and just left Rosie in for Thursday pulling. Rosie is by far the toughest of the lot, hardest to catch, but the toughest.

Great day at the Nile on Thursday. Anna showed a Gelbvieh heifer from Ledgerwood Gelbvieh, they won their class in the Jr Division and made it back. They were Grand Champion Sr Showman in showmanship. In the open division she was second in her class. Anna also got to show another heifer for Ledgerwood Gelbvieh and a bull, the bull was the Reserve Grand Champion overall bull. In the Angus division Anna’s bred and owned heifer won her division and her bull won his class. In showmanship Kale made it back to the championship round and Anna did really well. I went and had lunch with grandma, I shared a grilled cheese sandwich with her and she had soup. Thursday night Toni and I worked on the foals. Kade did not have drivers ed so he did most of the chores. The foals are really starting to make progress. Tulip wanted to be done. She is kind of turning into a quitter.

Friday Anna and McCall showed at the Nile and Kale Cordill showed his Nile Merit heifer. McCall had Queenie and Baby Cow and Anna showed Blondie and her bull. Queenie got 2^nd in her class and Blondie was in the same class and 3^rd. Baby Cow was 5^th in a deep class. Kale and Berta were 3^rd in their class. The bull won his division and got to come back to the championship round. Kale and Berta were 4^th Overall in the Nile Merit Program and Reserve Champion in Showmanship. Marlo came and her and Kade did chores. I worked on the foals, Toni had court on Friday, but she got there as we were finishing up and took some pics of the foals. Mom, Marlo, Kade, Jaxsen and I met Dianne in at Kaine’s football game. Kade got to record the film for the team. It was Sr night and we got to see a lot of fiends be honored in Sr night. It was a great game and Connell won.

Happy birthday Jaxsen. On Saturday Kade went hunting and Kaine went with his friends to Tri Cities to play golf before homecoming. Toni and I loaded out Mercades on Saturday, she went home with Juan. Jaxsen wanted to invite friends over for his birthday, so Toni went around and gathered them up. Then Robby and Ed came with daughter Cheynne to get a clubby steer. Then I fixed fence with the dogs, cleaned some stuff up, fed the cows a few old 2 string bales that were left over from shows and hanging around the show shed. Kade got home and did chores early so I could take him down to meet the boys for homecoming. Toni and I took pics of Capone and then finished up chores, which included getting Blaze and Dukey in and haltered. We had to chase the pen around a bit, but we got them. Both were pretty easy to halter. Bailey gets another week. I then ran to Kennewick with Kade and took homecoming pics and dropped him off with the other kids and came home. The boys had a good time at Homecoming. Ben, McCall and Mckenna went to Morgans in Wyoming to pick up the steers at Morgans house. They look really good, we are really happy with them. Then they went to the Angus sale to bid on some heifers but did not get any. Which the trailer was pretty full so maybe for the best, even though we really liked some of Zane Barragree’s heifers in the sale and some of Lacey and Chads from 3C (they donated Anna’s Nile Merit Heifer from last year). McKena flew out of Billings that night home to Kansas. Toni took Jax’s friends home. A few wanted to stay the night but she said she couldn’t deal with it. Our friend Robby said that she read somewhere that raising boys is like raising a pack of squirrels. That seems accurate. 2 boys is ok, more than 2 and you wonder what type of hell life has become.

On Sunday McCall, Ben and Anna headed home with the trailer load, and one heifer of Kelly Cordills that they dropped off. Toni, Kaine and Kade went to Pomeroy to pick up the Spokane steers from Dixons. Both boys took a turn driving with the trailer, they really can’t get too much experience driving with a trailer before they are turned lose on society. Once in Pomeroy, they spent some time with John and Jerry looking through the weaned calves. John Dixon does have some calves left that would work for a fall show if anyone is looking. I worked around the place with the dogs. Everyone kind of got home around the same time. We had to move pens around a bit to get pens for all of the steers and critters we have accumulated. Toni and I worked on group 4, Bailey, Blaze and Duke. All three donkeys had to come back in for a bit. We also put out big bales in the White tractor. I guess that happened this week too, we have sold the White tractor so putting out bales Sunday may have been its last job for KT Ranch. We also got Cog caught, practiced loading him, and put him in a pen at the house for him to leave on Monday to his new home. I weaned Mouse when she came in for grain, so another foal weaned.

We are down to four long yearling colts and one filly. We think they are all pretty good ones and each has a unique trait that sets them apart. The Judge is a big gray colt out of John Hallowell’s PD stud- so Apache Blue Boy on the bottom and Dash for Cash on the top. This colt is made for performance. He is big, strong, smart, and pretty. King Two is a stout shorter colt, clearly made for breakaway, calf roping, healing. He is more reactive, but again, really smart. He is more of a project type, but is going to make a fantastic horse. King Three is a true-blue roan that carries a crème gene. He is EE, so can’t have a red foal. Again, super smart colt. Very fancy, has the right look. Joker is a joy to be around, has the pedigree, and ability. We had originally thought Joker would be our next stallion, but we are going to go a different route. Joker has that potential, or would make a great gelding. Joss is a buckskin filly. She was a later born filly, but is stout, smart, curious, and just a fun filly. She isn’t going to be huge, should mature 14.2 with lots of natural grace. These are all really great foals that we are ready to move before winter.

KT Just Plain Spot On

KT Just Plain Spot On is by Just Plain Starlight, “Colonel,” and out of KT Major Sunshine. Colonel is a son of Tamalight and is out of Wright on Sugarnic, winner of the Cascade Cutter’s Futurity. Colonel has a pedigree that speaks for itself with Lenas Wright on, Grays Starlight, Docs Tamarak, Just Plain Colonel and more. KT Major Sunshine is a really nice mare out of a Sonny Dee Bar Too mare and by Zinks Major Kid. We have shown her in-hand trail at the NFQHA show in Ellensburg. This is a great mare that the kids all love, she has a great disposition. This is a great cross that has the pedigree to perform, but the size to also work a ranch. He was born 3/19/19. This is a colt with some fun white markings and body sports, he is a really cool colt. $2,500

I am a little behind getting this written. Wednesday one of Kade’s cows, “Sweet Apple,” had a cute Hereford bull calf by Rocky. I would like to say we are not disappointed that it is not a heifer. But we are. She has had two black white faced heifer calves in a row, so I guess it was too much to ask for another heifer. Also, we got the yearling colts in and West Niled them and wormed them. We also took new pictures of Major and Whim, both are still for sale if you are looking for a summer project. They are also huge. The good news is that they both remembered that they are halter broke. Smokey was perfect, but that isn’t new. He is considerably smaller than the other two, but even when you feed an orphan the way mom did, they still take forever to catch up.

Friday was my Friday off, so I took mineral out to most of the horses and cows. I may or may have not gotten temporarily stalled in Gunners pen, due to some run off last year that made a small ditch that I had forgotten about. Also, cousins Linda and Patricia showed up Friday night on their way home (to California) from visiting Yellowstone, Glacier and the Tetons National Parks. It is on Patricia’s bucket list to visit ALL of the National parks in the US, so they go to a few every year. Patricia and Jaxsen also got into a would you rather contest, on who can come up with the most extreme, would you rather have a short faced bear or a grizzly bear in your back yard. That type of thing. Dinosaurs also played a big part in the hypotheticals. Patricia never seems to get tired of Sonny’s far reaching imagination.

Believe it or not, Patricia wanted to build fence while she was here, so we decided to FINALLY finish the fence on Hendricks Rd. So Saturday we had a LONG day of fencing and sunburns. Luckily Chad showed up to shoe my horse so I got to adios vaminoos at about 2. The rest of the family and the kids kept at it until the fence was up enough that the pasture could be turned back out. We used that 5 foot no crawl horse fence. It is expensive, but it is good for a perimeter fence. I was nice and also put fronts on Fancy, to take more time so I did not have to get back to fencing.

Then we had “The Twins” graduation party Saturday night, and for course we had a good time there. We are going to miss our Twinners as they head to Oklahoma for college. People ask what we are going to do without them. We really don’t know. Literally, no idea.

Sunday, Ben, Kaine, Anna, Patricia and I built a horse fence for the riding horses so we could get them out on grass and stop feeding them. Then we took Patricia to Othello for lunch and Checos so we could get some more fencing supplies. Next, Toni and I took Patricia to move horses and finish the fence along Hendricks. We still had some areas that we needed to attach the fence to the posts in a more firm manner. That fence is so tight in a couple of spots it would take one person to hold it correctly while the other got the clips on. Kicker took the kids out on the lake in the boat for a Sunday Funday. The kids were happy to have a break from fencing. Sunday night we had a farewell dinner for Linda and Patricia. We love having them come up from California to visit us. Patricia always keeps us laughing. This year she was amazed by seed potatoes. Patricia never complains about the ranch work and always seems to enjoy herself. By the end of their visit, that Patricia could put a fence clip on with the best of them.

Tuesday morning the kids had their last assembly. All four kids got student of the month awards, so that was really cool. Sonny didn’t think he was getting one, but he did. It was really fun to have all four get awards at the same assembly. Tuesday afternoon Anna had her 6th grade promotion, I guess it is not graduation anymore. We officially have a Jr Higher on our hands. I don’t know if we are ready. I made dinner for everyone that night and Anna wanted tuna casserole. That isn’t everyone’s favorite, but the pie mom made for dessert sure was. Also on Tueday, dad’s cousin Jill came out with her sister, Lisa, to look at the horses. Today the kids got out of school at 10:10 so we are officially on summer break. Toni took them to Michael Jay’s for brunch before she went to court. Summertime here we come!
