Here is another phenomenal colt out of Lona by Leroy. Lona is out of Docs Sizzle Bar and Copper War Chic, “Chicken”. Chicken was a great cow horse and show horse that we had for many years. We did not start breeding Chicken until she was in her 20s, so we only got three foals out of her, one filly and two colts. We broke Lona to ride and have used her as a broodmare. Lona’s grandsire was Willie War Chic, ROM Race ~ SI 95. Loan’s breeding also includes, Sizzlin Hot, Docs Dee Bar, Ed Echols and more. Leroy is a stallion with a performance packed pedigree along with a very good disposition. He was a very smooth ride with tremendous talent, beautiful movement and huge stop. He was quiet and trainable which he passes along to his foals; he consistently produces fantastic foals with looks, color, conformation and brains. Leroy was unshown due to a wire cut injury that took a long time to heal; it happened just before hitting the showpen as a 3 year old and as a result he was turned out to the studpen. Leroy has produced 1 foal that has NRHA earnings. He also has a 3 year old competing in Western Dressage, was 3rd in Canada in July 2016 and has racked up more 1st place finishes since then. He is sired by Dolls Union Jac- ROM, NRHA earnings, and sired foals that have earnings in excess of $310,000.00 in NRHA, as well as earnings in NRCHA, Buckskin Assoc., and the AQHA world show. Leroy’s dam is Docsan Jeany who has produced foals with earnings in excess of $3700.00 and AQHA point earners. Leroy is also double registered with NFQHA at 92%.

Monday dragged on, since at 4 it seemed like 5 and I should be off of work. We were all still tired for the show, so that didn’t help the situation. WSU had a shift change on Monday, so we had new vets call with the Molly update, however, she still got the OK to come home on Tuesday. I had them contact Sheena with continued care, like blood work orders, etc. We are excited to get her home. Kaine had to stay after school to turn in his football gear, but besides that he is done with sports for a bit. It is nice with darkness coming so early to have them home for chores. Toni got Naughty, Dual and Duke back in to work with. Toni also did chores so the 3 kids that were home could wash their steers and heifers.
Tuesday Toni and mom headed to WSU to bring Molly home as soon as the kids were on the bus. I took Wild to Sheena to get her eye port taken out, then Wild was turned out with the other weanlings. Mom did not want Wild in with Molly. Wild isn’t wild, but she is big and can be pretty active. The old white trailer was brought down for Molly to spend nights in. Mom and Toni took a blanket for Molly so she did not get too cold on the way home. Molly was pretty lethargic acting up at WSU. They said she had not been super active, but was pretty resistant to getting her bandage changed. When Toni took her off the trailer at home, Molly was back to herself. Prancing, bucking in place, acting like she was pretty happy to be home. And of course mom was really happy she was home. We all were, but Mom especially. Because the trailer was at the house from bringing Molly home, we practiced loading Naughty, Duke, Dual, and Lilo. Since the weather had gotten cold we also put Double’s blanket on him. Kaine washed his heifers after school and Kade and Jaxsen did chores.
Wednesday Coco got sick, so Toni watched baby Shea from 6:30 am to about 10:30. Kendel watched Shea while Toni had court. Anna went and got her when she got home from school from Kendel. They all had lots of fun watching her, but we are still sad Coco was sick. Coco ended up going to the doctor to try to get some meds and get better. Toni and the kids did chores. Naughty, Dual, and Duke were all progressing really well. Toni was getting ready to go to a convention, so she had Kade and Kaine help her with the colts as they would be working on them on Thursday. We forget how much stranger danger the foals have until you go to introduce someone new to them. But the boys did really well with the colts. Dual is very chill. Duke, who is still really young, just needed more time to get used to the boys. We call them boys, but they are both about 6 feet tall and probably look pretty big to the weanling colts.
Thursday Coco was still sick, Toni had court so Kendel watched Shea and took Coco some chicken noodle soup. Toni and Leslie left for WCA conference at noon in Wenatchee. The kids did most of chores. I did some when I got home, not a lot, what they left for me. The boys worked on the colts themselves. They said they did fine. Someone also has to help mom lead Molly who is feeling her oats now that she is home. We still have to give her meds, change her bandages, but she is much improved. We just hope we can keep her moving in the right direction with her healing.
Happy Veterans Day. On Friday Ben the kids and I left for SE Idaho to see the Geddes family. We stay with Ben’s sister Candice, her husband James and the 4 girls. Kaydance is the only one of the 4 that does not do dance, she is in to animals, so we are trying to convince Candice and James to let her stay with us for a while in the summer. Toni got home late in the day and the Meachams did chores while we were gone. McCall came and house sat.
We had a great time in Idaho, for the few days we were there, and visited as many people as we could. We took Nugget the mini down with us for Andee.
Toni and the boys did a lot while we were gone. On Saturday, Kade went shooting. Jaxsen and Toni went and loaded out Duke, Dual, and Naughty. It was a cold but sunny day. After the three colts left, Toni and Kade got Lilo, Groot, and Rich in. Groot and Rich were the two options for Jeshua for the AQHA youth program. The Meacham men put out straw for all of the horses. They did chores.
Jeshua ended up selecting Groot on Sunday. Groot is quite a bit bigger than Rich at this point and he is bay. Jeshua likes bays. Really who doesn’t? Toni and Kade got the next halterbreaking victims in, they ended up being Judge, Gunnie, and one last sold filly that is staying awhile. Then Toni and Kade pulled Shadie and Cammie in, weaned those 2 foals, put a blanket on Shadie. Then went and caught Blue and Lendy, weaned those 2 foals. So the only foal left to wean is Summer. She is just too tiny to wean. They were supposed to haul a load of mares out after that, but ended up riding out to check the heifers instead. Kade is really wanting to ride his horse Minnie quite a bit before he has to quit because she is ready to foal. We bought her bred, so probably won’t breed her back unless Kade has moved to something else to ride, but he likes her a lot. Then they cleaned out the red trailer before winter. After that it was time for chores.
Seven foals left to sell. We are still debating keeping as many as we have selected to keep. So we may have some others for sale at some point. Toni tried to buy a few at the Millionaire’s sale but wouldn’t bid high enough. We had the Shining Spark 2022 colt for all of 5 minutes before we got outbid. I think he sold for $51,000.00. Yeah, we were an early bid! A person might wonder why we would bid on another horse. There is nothing that makes a person happier than buying livestock. With 290 entries for the Western Showcase, it was a long weekend. The individuals that organize the show, Ruth, Gerry, Scott, and everyone else, do an amazing job.
We are definitely back to season temps on Monday. We are supposed to have a La Nina I hear, and it is rainy and cold. Not that we don’t need the rain, the rain is good. It just does not feel the best when you are working on the foals. Monday the kids did not have school, so they clipped and got ready for the upcoming show. Kaine had football practice, so dad ran him in and brought him home. Toni and the kids did chores early, Toni worked on Duke and Naughty and tied Groot since he was the biggest to Tulip. She quickly discovered that Groot was the easiest, so traded Duke and Groot. When I got there, we only had to get Rita in for dad and mom to take her home on Tuesday. I guess she does not want to leave because that took 30 min and we had to run the whole pen across the driveway. Then of course they couldn’t go back into their pen, all the horses wanted to run around the driveway and see what they could see.
Tuesday morning Toni loaded Cappy and Rita into the trailer. Mom and dad took Cappy to Jason Hicks to start and Rita went to Marcy’s so she could go home. Jaxsen and Kade did horse chores and Anna did the show cattle chores. Kade and Jaxsen went up to help her finish. Kaine had a game in Royal City, it was moved up to 4, luckily Heidi texted a bunch of us so we made it in time. Toni worked on the colts; they worked on tying in the rain. Rain makes it hard to work on foals because you really can’t get a good grip on the lead rope and have no traction. The three weren’t trouble for Tulip so Toni just had to work through it. It rained all day Tuesday, but not in Royal, it was dry there. Which was good for the game. The game was good, the boys played hard. Molly report from WSU was not as good as it has been. She had some fluid buildup at her incision area, so they put a sleeve on her. And she still has fluid in her lungs so they are still monitoring that.
Wednesday was a little brisk. Kade are Jaxsen are done with football, so they got home and helped with chores, Kaine had another game on Friday, so he still had practice after school. Molly is doing well at Pullman, but still has fluid in her lungs and a slightly elevated temp, so it does not look like she will make it home this week. Toni worked on the colts and did chores with the kids. The colts were leading pretty good, tied pretty good. Groot is pretty chill. Naughty is really soft, like a typical Jackpot. They are pretty sensitive and have lots of give. Duke is good too, he is just a little guy and more scared. We got home and helped her doctor Wild and Absolute. It is getting so dark so early, and next week will be worse. That is the worst thing about fall. The kids were getting the trailer packed to head to Moses Lake for the weekend. Last week when it was in the 70s I was looking forward to the show. Now that we are back to seasonal temps, my excitement has been dampened.
Thursday morning we woke up to a heavy frost, snaps from people from other parts of the NW show snow. It was a cold and windy day, but we had better weather than a lot of other people. Kaine had practice, dad picked him up. The kids packed the trailer and got their show animals ready. Toni worked on the colts, they were all lead out in the corral pen for at least a couple of laps. Again, Thursdays are the best because the foals pretty much lead and you are just introducing them to new concepts- like going through a small gate, or stepping over something. Thursdays in general are pretty fun in the foal pen. McCall has been coming out and helping the kids get ready for the show.
Friday I finished getting everything packed up, food, drinks, etc. Then went and picked Kade and Jaxsen up from school and we headed to Moses Lake to set up, with Leslie, Whitney and Deb. Traci, Natalie, Julian, Ady and Savannah were an hr or so behind us, then McCall got there and Toni and Anna an hr or so behind them. Dad was already up in Moses Lake helping set-up at the show. Kaine had a football game, so we did not see him on Friday. It was big drama to not have Kaine. The little kids wanted to know where Kaino was. We got everything set up, animals blown out and a few washed. We checked into our hotel, went out to eat and went to bed. We had a really good dinner, it was just late by the time we got everything done and the cattle take care of.
Saturday we were up before the sun, got the animals washed and ready to start showing. The wind was howling and there were high wind warnings in effect. Saturday was the steer show. The judge got stranded in TX due to a lightning storm, so a local guy from Ellensburg filled in. There were 18 classes of steers, so the show lasted all morning and into early afternoon. Marlo brought us all coffees and chai’s in the morning, and I for one needed it. Jolene showed up with 4 boxes of donuts, yeah 4 boxes. We had to tell the kids only two and then wait an hr. Natalie was first in her class, so got to go back into the championship round. Anna and Julian had seconds, so were on standby. We had a great team, that included Jay, McCall and everyone listed above that showed up on Friday. Everyone did a great job showing. Only Anna and Jaxsen had steers from our group. Because Kaine did not have a steer, Kaine and Ben worked the heifers, moved them to a fresh pasture, and then Ben brought Kaine down after. We washed everyone, including heifers, when we got done showing and then went to the 509 banquet. We had a great time seeing everyone. Anna was a 509 ambassador this year which was a great experience for her. We think Alyx Corey does a great job on the program and the banquet is always a highlight for us.
Sunday we were up again, we got to sleep in an hr with fallback, so we could have an hr of darkness and despair in the evening. The medium kids got to sleep in since they only had steers, so showmanship after the heifer show. The rest of us got up and washed and got everyone ready to show. The judge made it in from TX. Lane showed up and helped fit. He was a lot of help, and we all convinced him he needed to show in showmanship, since he was already signed up. The kids all showed great. Kade and Baby Cow got second in their class, so were standby in the championship round. Kade, Kaine and Anna all made it back to the championship round in showmanship, Kaine was 5th overall intermediate. 4th was cousin Parker and 6th was cousin Delany. The medium kids, Traci, Leslie, McCall and Deb started packing stuff up while the big kids were still showing. Ben and the big kids helped some in-between classes. Afterwards we packed up and headed south to do chores in the dark. FYI everyone, kid with the camera, Julian, is my camera intern. He shows and then grabs my camera and takes pictures. He is doing a great job. Toni, Marlo, Leslie, Traci, McCall, probably Whitney also all took pictures. Savannah even took a few, she is 5 so can not be turned loose with it yet, but she would like to be. She would also like to be turned loose with a fitting comb, some adhesives and clippers as well. It is one of the biggest and best shows in the Pacific Northwest with kids from Montana to Oregon and everywhere in between. Of the 290 entries, our group (us and the cousins) had 16 head. For many of the cattle we took, it was their first show and they were excellent. This was Jax’s first time at this show and he is already planning to show again next year. It is a fast paced highly competitive show.
The other big news that we got when we got home was an email from our AQHA youth recipient. We are excited to meet Jeshua and get the right foal selected for him. Anna was also selected to participate in the 2023 program, so we are excited to see how she does. We are thankful that AQHA has a youth program to keep young people interesting in quarter horses. Being part of this program has been something that we have valued as breeders, as it allows us to expand the impact that the American Quarter horse has to influence future leaders. There is nothing more important to any breed organization than ensuring success by influencing youth. Programs like the NILE Merit heifer program and the AQHA youth program ensure agriculture’s tomorrows. We are proud to say that we support both of these programs. Kale Cordill is our Nile Merit Heifer Recipient and Anna was a Nile Merit Recipient last year with a heifer from 3C Cattle.
Also, Cappy is doing great with Jason Hicks, we are excited to see how he does.

For a little donkey that didn’t love people when she got here, she has become a great asset as well as a pet.
On Monday we finally got the Conley heifer Kade bought back in the middle of September. We were happy with how she looked and we got to meet a new shipper. Dean Libheart lives in Centralia and goes all over if anyone needs a shipper. Really nice guy. He had some longhorns in the trailer, so Toni tried to buy a heifer for Ben. Kaine’s football games were postponed to Tuesday, so just practice for everyone after school. Anna, McCall and Ben packed their last few items before they were leaving early on Tuesday for the Nile. They are going to have a good time. I am sad I am not going with them. Anna has her Nile heifer, “Lacy,” 7, 166 and a char heifer. McCall is taking Mayhem, Kaine’s heifer. We are also getting ready for the Western Showcase the beginning of November. Toni and I continued to work on the two colt and two fillies.
Tuesday was a cluster of a day, but did not end up too bad. Ben, McCall and Anna headed out at 12:30 Am to the NILE show in Billings, MT. The got there at around 11:30 MT. They got the char heifer checked in, beds made, and went to the club calf sale with Morgan, who met them there. Toni and mom took Cappy and Absolute to the vet. Absolute had the lavage removed from her eye. She kept her eye and hopefully has some vision in it. Cappy was getting travel papers, he might move to Oregon. Absolute was tired of going to see Sheena, so was not the best to load. Kaine and Kade both had football games, so all of adults left at home divided and conquered. And we hustled to get it done. Mom, Jaxsen and I went to Kaine’s game, the rest went to Kade’s game. Both boys played like the super stars they are. Jaxsen, mom and I ran down and got pizza, per dad’s request, for dinner and then picked Kaine up and went home. During the night Dude got out at Toni’s and ran around the house.
On Wednesday Anna showed the char heifer and her and McCall fit her. She did a great job, the heifer looked awesome, and she showed really well. I would say she was the best behaving heifer in the ring. We were all able to watch on the livefeed. I thought she should have won hands down, however, the judge liked them a little bit more moderate framed. Mini Tank left on Wednesday and took his time loading. However, Kendra said he hauled like a rockstar, exited the trailer gracefully and started grazing. Toni and I worked on the foals, Toni went up and got the trailer and we practiced loading them, they all did great. Boys got home and did chores, the man and boys did the cattle chores.
Thursday early morning Dude started getting out again. So Dude and Leroy got to switch pens. When studs start going through hotwire, you just have to do something different with them. Dude is really easy to get in and seemed to be more interested in the grain he found than anything else. At the Nile, the Jr show started at one, so Anna, McCall and Ben got up and got them ready. Anna and her team did great, Gamora was a division champion, Lacey won her class and 7 was 4th in her class. Anna and Lacey showed well in showmanship. Anna had her Nile interview in between showing. I think they got done around 6 Montana time, then still had to wash and feed. McKenna flew in on Thursday. At home, Jaxsen had a BBQ for grid kids. We all pitched in and got chores done. We got a new mare on Thursday, Gracie. Gracie is a great mare and we are excited to get her. We have known Gracie for a few years now and she is one of the sweetest kindest mares out there. She also has a very nice pedigree out of a money earning cutting stud, Cats Stormin Oak.
Happy Birthday Jaxsen! Last year before you are a teenager, the big 1 2. Friday Anna and McCall showed open in the morning. They did not do as well with the open judge as with the Jr judge, however, they both did a great job showing and the heifers looked great. The Nile Merit heifer competition started at 1 with the progeny parade. We also shipped out Dun Bug to a long time buyer, Janice. He loaded amazing and they were loaded and gone quickly. Kaine had a varsity game at Ki Be, I forgot my camera, Kaine was supposed to take it down to moms with him, and he forgot it. So when Jade came out to get the camera we found it missing, so Toni ran to my house and got it. The Nile Merit Heifer show started, Anna and Lacey won the black Angus class. They were 3rd overall in breeding. The other WA girl, Alyssa Williams, with a Hangin A heifer from Alan Alexander, was Grand champion. We are proud of both of the WA girls. Anna made it back for the final round in showmanship as well. We are so proud of how well Anna and Lacey did. Thank you 3C on your generous donation. Jaxsen was student of the month, so Toni went to that assembly and picked-up Jax and Kade. Meachams did chores. It rained Friday, Diane and I went to Ki Be to watch Kaine. The weather has been so nice for the football games. It was a great game besides the rain and seasonal temps. Diane, Kaine and I went to Bob’s Burgers after the game. Toni made finger steaks for Jax’s bday so Marlo had dinner with the Meachams.
Jaxsen’s last Grid Kids game was Saturday. They had a good game and he rocked it like normal. After the game, Jaxsen’s two best friends came out for a small bday party. Because boys are boys they mostly ran around and fought each other with sticks. Kaine and I went and picked up Jessie, Truffles and Nugget at Cecil and Debbies house, all of the minis are back home now. We had someone out looking at bulls on Saturday, so Kaine and I got the bulls in and sorted out the Herefords and older bulls, since they wanted a yearling Angus bull. They picked 204. Toni was then back from football and I took Kaine down to his second homecoming, to Camas’ school. Ben, Anna and McCall were on their way home from the Nile, they picked the Seldom Rest heifers up at Midland Bull Test. The also ran into some snow on the way home. But they made pretty good time.
Sunday Anna left again at 2:30 in the morning to head to FFA Nationals. Ben took her and Brandy to the airport. Our 11 oclock horse pickup got lost, so she was a little late. But Jethro loaded like a champ. We had Jaxsen birthday party at noon, pizza, it was great. Jaxsen got lots of great presents. Both of the afternoon people were also late, however, only one of them was lost. And the lost one we saw drive by, and they went clear around again. We wormed 6 foals while we waited and haltered three. We moved the Conley heifer up with the other show cattle. We quarantined her for the week just in case she got sick from the trip. She didn’t. After everyone left we notice Molly was laying down, she was one of the six we gave Zimectrin Gold to. So we got some meds down her and we walked her for about an hr. She seemed better, so Toni and I went home. Mom texted at 10:30 she was down again. We went down to give her more meds and Toni told me she could walk her. Well, I found out the next morning that they had walked her all night. I hear it got decently cold and windy. So Monday morning Molly was in at Sheenas at opening. That saga continues next week.
We are getting really into the halterbreaking. We are probably half done? Maybe less. Tulip has been nothing but exceptional. For a little donkey that didn’t love people when she got here, she has become a great asset as well as a pet. She still doesn’t let Kade catch her, maybe either big boy actually. Toni forgets Tulip doesn’t let him catch her, so sent him out to grab her the other day, Tulip ran off. We called Tulip over and she ran right to us and in the gate. Tulip is very amusing.
We are down to having 9 foals left for sale. We always find it interesting which foals don’t sell right away. Some that we think should sell quickly don’t. Others that we think might take longer to sell, don’t. We think all of the foals have been exceptional. I challenged Toni with telling me a foal she doesn’t like, she can’t. She has also wanted to keep all of them. It has been hard getting her to agree to sell anything. The colts are a little easier to sell since we don’t like riding geldings. The fillies have been like pulling teeth. And now that we are halterbreaking them, it has been extra hard because you get to see their personalities. These foals are just so nice. So if you see one you like and want to hear everything bad about it in an effort to get you not to buy, call Toni, she will tell you all bad things. Take them with a grain of salt.

Here is another phenomenal foal out of Izzy. Izzy is out of Captains Double Coy and by KT Copper Queen Cleo. Izzy is our first 4th generation mare. We were able to show her prior to her being injured, then we use her on the ranch for a few years before adding her to our brood mare band. She is a really nice mare that we love, she is one of our favorites. She is really cowy and goes after the cows and dogs. We love her foals, they are very smart and trainable as well as having great confirmations. She is 83% NFQHA and her pedigree includes Sizzlin Hot, Major Bonanza, Ed Echols, Coys Bonanza, Major King and more. KT Jackpot City is out of Lenas Abbie N Charge and is by City Smarts. “Abbie” is a daughter of Smart Like Lena with Mr. Charge Bar on the bottom side. Smart Like Lena is a son of Smart Little Lena and has lifetime earnings of over $89,000.00 a ROM in cutting, and has sired offspring earning over $100,000 in NCHA money. Mr. Charge Bar was an NCHA money earner, had 33 AQHA performance points, 11 halter points, and an SI of 75. City Smarts is by An Educated Guess, 385 reining points, and the highest point earning son of Smart Chic Olena. City has a full brother that is a reiner and priced at $13,000. This is a pretty moving colt with tons of ability and a performance deluxe pedigree.

Fall = Football, weaning, halter breaking, cattle sales and more
Monday was still in the 80s and it is October. Weather is beautiful, grass is still growing, however, the circles are getting tired of running and keep breaking down. Toni and Tulip, with Kade’s help, worked on Mug, Call and Blaze. Mom, Dad and I went to Kaine’s football game in Connell. Mom and dad brought Jaxsen in to practice on their way. Toni reported that these three are not as easy as the last three, the last three were unusually easy and these three are normal. Men and Anna did cow and show animal chores. Kade went up and helped when he got done helping Toni.
Tuesday the beautiful weather continued. Marty came and picked up Stormin, he is the first foal to leave to his new home. Kade had a game on Tuesday, so Toni worked on the foals then Meachams and mom went to the game. Kade played a good game, they played a hard team. Anna did the cattle chores, Kaine and I did the horse chores, I worked on the foals some more and moved the water and Kaine fed. When we got home Anna, Kaine and I cleaned out the red trailer from the show supplies, so it was pretty late by the time we got in. Ben got home and worked on circles, then they had a picker vs semi accident at work (everyone is ok) so he had to go back. He got home at around midnight.
On Wednesday morning Toni took Wild and Mug into see Sheena. Wild got injured in the eye so needed at lavage and Mug needed travel docs. Tulip went with Mug because it was just the third day of halter breaking. Mug was so good and Tulip was a good sport like always. When she got home she practiced loading Call and Blaze as well. This is only day three in halter breaking, so they are all are doing very well. Toni and mom continued to dr Wild and Absolute throughout the day. With these eye injuries it is recommended that the horse (foal) be medicated 3-4 times per day, so we are doing 4 every day. Anna had an FFA Officer retreat in Quincy after school, so Jaxsen rode the bus home. Toni has been going to get magnetic therapy on her hip, so she had that in the afternoon. She brought the trailer down when she got home, we got to moms around the same time, and we practiced loading the three colts some more. Call and Mug probably would have done a lot better if they had not had the same pickup weekend and got weaned at different times. They are pretty mothered up. After the boys finished chores, they went up and did cow chores. Circle 8 had to be restarted Wednesday night, I guess it is getting tired of running. Mom made a rhubarb custard bar on Wednesday, it was really good.
Thursday the colts were worked on twice, Jaxsen had a makeup game in Ephrata, so Toni worked on them before she left, then I worked on them again when I got home. They did really good. Kade, Kaine and I did horse chores, then the boys went up and helped Anna with the cattle chores. Toni and Jaxsen got home pretty late from their game.
Friday mom and I went to Tennelles and got our hair done in the morning. We doctored the two fillies before we left and when we got back. Dad did not go into work until later in the day. I hooked up the gooseneck and fed the show cattle, so when Anna and Kade got home we could head into Evergreen sale. Marlo, Jaxsen and Toni worked on the colts and did horse chores. Blaze was Marlo’s to work on, and he knows no strangers, he has been a typical Double. Easy and funny. Shasta also came in with her colt, Dun Bug, who we have been trying to wean for a week now. Shasta recognized the trap as soon as she went in the gate, but it was too late. So Toni and Marlo got Dun Bug weaned. The men did the cattle chores. Kaine went to Toppenish for a football game, and caught a ride home with Jade. Kade, Anna and I got to Ellensburg, unhooked the trailer, Anna got in her Queen clothes and we went to the banquet. We had a good time, sat with cousins, Lyyskis, Wanda Burris, cousin Jill. Mom sent lemon bars and rhubarb custard bars for the dessert auction; they were very good. Toni and the men sold the Titan trailer, to cousin Jill’s best friend’s son. We had never met Luke and Eric before but I hear that we know all kinds of the same people so they were at the house super late talking.
Saturday McCall, Stacy, Kathy and Adrian brought Kaine to the Evergreen sale. Kade, Anna and I got up earlyish to have breakfast at the palace with cousins. Toni got up earlyish to doctor the fillies. Wild is getting really bad to doctor. She is not mean, she is just big and wasn’t halter broke before this injury situation, so she just kind of runs a person over. Absolute has been in almost a week longer so is resigned to her fate. The kids all judged, you get a sale credit if you do well, Kade won and received a $500 sale credit, which he used to buy Payton’s heifer. Kaine bought a Steve Jachetta heifer. We bid on a few others. Adrian bought a heifer, and a heifer for her brother. We hauled two heifers back for Kim and a steer back for Mike. We also stopped by Jarmins and picked up two clubby steers, one for us and one for Adrian. We had a great time at the sale talking to people and bidding. The Seldom Rest sale in Michigan was the same time on the same day. We were also able to get 2 heifers for the kids at Seldom Rest. Our good family friend, Ryan Cotton, has been very good to us in sifting through those heifers and helping us select that best heifers in our budget at that sale. Scott and Andrew at Seldom Rest treat the kids great and really help them at the Junior National Show. Jaxsen had a good football game, got some tackles, had fun. He had his special cousin Kasen come watch him (he calls Kasen his mini-me) along with Leslie, Jolene, and Reese. Toni left as soon as the game was over to load out Call with Hunter. Call loaded really well and he was off to his new home. Hunter has been out a bunch to play with Call since he put his deposit down so Call already liked Hunter. Hunter was really surprised at how big Call was. Call and Mug are on the bigger end of our weanlings. They may be the biggest two. Anna also got to go to Homecoming on Saturday night with her boyfriend Lane. McCall got Anna home from the Evergreen and then Anna wen to Toni’s for hair and makeup. Anna looked amazing and Lane looked pretty good too. Anna got to do some teenager stuff and enjoy herself.
Sunday morning Toni loaded out two more colts. Wes and Beth showed up to get the steer Mike bought. Ben made his own birthday lunch. McCall came out and her and Anna worked on the heifers going to the Nile. Marlo came and had birthday lunch with us. Dad was working so not there. Mom made fresh apple pie and rhubarb custard pie. After lunch Toni and Kade went down to halter the next group of foals. Anna and McCall packed for the Nile. Kaine, Ben and I sorted out heifers, Spokane steers and fall show steers and moved a bunch of stuff around. Kale came and picked out his Nile heifer and his mom came with him and bought a heifer. Kale did not like the one Krystal liked, so they needed to get both. Ben had to go back to work to fix a picker right as Kale got there. Anna and Kaine started the cow chores, I went down and helped Toni finish the horse chores. Kade went up and helped Anna and Kaine when he got done. Wild broke her pick line on the last dose of meds Sunday, so a new pick line had to be put in, but there was no new port, so medicating Wild got worse. We also needed new video of Cappy for a gal, so got that. Cappy is another typical Double and every time we work on him, Toni again says she doesn’t want to sell him. Cappy looks like a Double, moves like a Double, acts like a Double. Tons of personality and potential. He is going to be a hard one to sell for us.
We are in the thick of it now. Probably 1/3 done weaning foals, more like 1/4 done (at best) halter breaking foals and thanking Tulip every day for her contribution to the program. It is amazing what a donkey does for the halter breaking. She just helps the foals learn to give. We normally leave her hooked up to the foal once or twice for 15 minutes at the most, that is really all it takes. Every once in a while a foal may need more time with Tulip, but it usually doesn’t take much for the result you get. Tulip is pretty patient and has been a great protector and companion for the foals on top of being useful.
It is once again time for a Molly update. Molly has been cut back to three feedings of grain per day. No, no other foals get that much grain unless they are will Molly. Molly is also shedding out a dark bay or possibly a brown. Mom is very unhappy with this color change and would like Molly to go back to a blood bay. We were told today that we need to be loading Molly because she may want to travel. Maybe she does, maybe she doesn’t. We will be informed when we are informed as to what Molly wants. The reality is that Molly is a really great filly. She could be a spoiled brat, and maybe she is, but she loves all of us so we can’t see any devil in her.
