Cousin Leslie says she doesn’t like to get her long johns out until it is really cold because once you start putting them on, you put them on until winter is over. Well it is officially long john wearing season. It isn’t just winter, it is a cold winter.

Sunday night Anna, Ben and I switched off and on getting up all night checking the cows. We had 3 cows calve and two didn’t get up and nurse right away, the cold wind will just suck the spirit right out of them, so we gave them colostrum. Ben is off until January, he has to use up his vacation days, so he gets to check them all day. It snowed through the night, so the kids had a two-hour delay. Anna used that time to check cows with Ben, Kade to practice roping, Kaine to sleep and Jaxsen to catch up on his shows. The main roads were not bad, so I came to work on time. The kids got home and did their chores, Toni worked on The Joker and T, and Joss is getting an additional week to wean her and her sister, and she was mad her sister went out and she did not. I got up and checked Monday night, Anna checked around midnight and Ben checked in the early morning, due to the cold we are checking the calving cows at night.  The weather is actually pretty good for calving, there have just been a few days that have been less than ideal.

Tuesday I did not go to work, we were going to a funeral. In the morning Ben and Anna went and checked early, after all night of checking cows due to the cold. We had a number of new calves Monday night/Tuesday morning. Anna went to school and Ben and I ran 338 in the chute and helped her graft calf, he is a char/jersey and could not figure out how to nurse. Then we ran the cows in the smaller calving pen in and tagged the ones that had calved and turned them out. 241 had lost her calf and 541 had twins, so 241 got a new calf on Tuesday. Then it was time for me to get ready, Toni stopped by and picked me up around 11:30, she had picked Kendel up on the way. Kendel and Leslie made a bunch of jello for us to take at the request of the deceased’s family. Glad those two stepped up. We picked up Grandma and Diane at Grandma’s house. Then we all caravaned over. The funeral was really well attended and a lot of great memories were shared. On our way home we stopped and chatted with grandma for about an hr then came home to do chores. I worked on The Joker and Joss and Toni worked on T. Joss was not mad at me, so she must think Toni turned out her sister.  Jaxsen started basketball practice. He is the only one playing bb.

Wednesday morning, we had a few more calves during the night. When Ben went out and 3:30 there was a big coyote in with the cows. And the cows are literally right next to our house, we walk out and checked them. We have lots of calves being born, but luckily he spooked the coyote off. Toni worked on the foals, she has to tie Absolute up or she “helps” her with T.  That means Absolute nips at Toni, nips at T, and gets in the way. Absolute can be an absolute pain in the butt. She was in getting her eye doctored for months so she has no concept of personal space. And for some reason most of our grulla fillies have had lots of personality. Both Joker and T are doing awesome.  Joss is pretty much at a standstill. She is very brainy, but she isn’t ready to realize that she isn’t the boss. Turning her sister out didn’t help.  We will win her over, it is just going to take a bit. Sometimes that best thing you can do for foals like this is to turn them out and let them mature. The basics are there- she leads, ties, catches, etc. She just needs to accept that she is not the alpha. Time can work wonders.

It snowed on Thursday, and with weather change new babies seem to be born. Dad hauled the youngest Hereford bull to Connell, Uncle Joe is going to take him, we are unsure about the terms right now, trade for a heifer, money, we take him back, etc. He just needs to be out of here. For those that don’t know, Kicker and Ben do not appreciate the Herefords. As in they don’t like them. They want Angus. This bull happened to also be younger than our other bulls so he was already on their list. We are waiting to see how he looks in the spring. He is a pretty dark red bull. Really a perfect specimen, but we kept a bunch of sisters to him, so we could only use him for one year.   Toni, Kaine and Kade wormed the yearling fillies, except for Doll who got by the boys, and the old horses. We had a water leak under a cement pad in the heavy cow pen, so Ben went to Othello and rented a jack hammer and fixed the pipe. It is always interesting to realize that we see Kade and Kaine as kids, but the horses don’t. The yearling fillies did not like the boys trying to help catch them.

Friday the kids had no school, due to all of the snow. So both Toni and I got lots of new pics with our new lens. Ben and Anna went to the Medonca dairy to get a jersey/char heifer for Anna and mom, mom is paying but Anna is doing the labor from what I hear?? While Ben and Anna were gone Kaine and I got the couple  of calves in from the heavy pen and tagged the calves and tuned them out. Then we moved all of the heavy cows together, so we could lock the new group in a separate pen. Marlo came to do chores, and Marlo, Kade, Toni and I got pics of T and Absolute. Kaine went to spend the night with his friend Cyson, who was taking him hunting the next day.  We got Doll in and got the wormer down her. So we are done at Mom’s getting everything done. We also got some new pictures of the studs at the corral. Hey, they had halters on, might as well get pictures.

Saturday we got the cows in the sorted the new heavy group out. Then they all really started calving, I think we had 15 calves on Saturday. Ben and Anna had to pull one during the night, I  seen her on my night check, so when Anna went out at midnight the feet were out and they could see it was backwards. We got some more tagged and turned out. Basically, most of Saturday was making sure the cows were with their own calves. When the red clubby bull was born everyone wanted him, I guess because he was different, so MC01 and her calf got moved. He is a very pretty little red clubby bull. Kaine always gets the first shot at claiming the red clubbies so we will see. We had bought this red cow to breed to a clubby bull so we are excited to see how this goes. We actually have 3 red composite cows to breed to the clubby bull. 710 took her calf up the hill into the snow, that was where she was born in 2017 in a snow drift and I guess she wanted her calf in the same spot. A heifer calved in a mud hole. You know, normally calving stuff. At chores on Saturday Toni, Kade, Kaine and I got new pics of The Joker and Joss. Then we turned them out. We are done halter breaking for a while. Foxxy had a bull calf Saturday night, so Anna was pretty excited about that. Really there are a bunch of exciting calves and these cows are doing a great job

Sunday we had Kaine’s birthday party, Uncle Skip could not come down due to the roads, and he did not have his snow tires on yet. Marlo came out to party with us. MC02 was calving during the party and had a big ol club calf, so we had to go and pull him mid party. We brought Foxxy and her calf in to hang out with her so she was not in by herself.  Another big red clubby bull calf, so now Kaine has 2 to chose from. Anna, Kaine, Kade and Camas went out and checked the cows, Kade wanted to see Vixen’s calf. He is a cute one too. Also a clubby, but more Angus than clubby. We did the Christmas pictures Sunday, Camas got to be in them since she was out.

No matter how many years a person has owned livestock, and with knowledge passed down from generations of livestock ownership, there is always something new just around the corner to keep life interesting

Monday was a hectic whorl wind of a day. It started Sunday night with Molly colicing. Toni and mom lead her all night. Toni finally texted me at 4, which I did not see until 5ish, to bring the trailer down. While looking for colic remedies online Toni saw that you could haul them around and it could jiggle the air bubbly out. So I threw on some clothes and headed down. We drove her in circles until around 7, dropped Toni off at her house, because she had court starting at 9, and mom and I continued to drive her around until Sheena was open and 8. Sheena knew we were coming and met us out back. We dropped Molly off and headed home. Sheena texted me around 10 we needed to take Molly to WSU, she was getting it lined out. I had just hit 17 and was headed to work. So I turned around, woke up mom, woke up Toni (who had court after being up all night then went to bed), got the trailer, picked up mom, picked up Toni and headed to Othello. Sheena had Molly ready to go when we got there, so we got her on the trailer and headed out. It was around 1 when we got to Pullman, we had not been to the vet college since COVID, you have to call ahead now, which we had been told so we did, so they can open the gate and let you in. As we are backing up to bay 1 we had two vets, three students and a horse person waiting for us. They scooped her up and took off, mom did not even get to say goodbye, because you can no longer go back with your horse. We were sent to the waiting room. Dr Sanz came out about 15 min later to us know what that Molly had a blockage in her small intestine, which is what Sheena had already told us. I asked if Mom could go and tell her goodbye, since Molly at best case scenario would be there for 3 days. So, Dr Sanz took mom back while the intern person, Bree Brown, took down all of the info from Toni and I. We were then told that we needed a deposit, and guess what, Toni and I brought lots of snacks (our football snack bags) but no money. LOL. So, mom had to pay. We did come up with $63 in our pockets, but did not think that would work for surgery. At that point we were told Molly had at best a 50% shot, but we assured mom that the Unsinkable Molly Brown was not going down. WSU can only give statistics on horses, they couldn’t give a statistic on Molly. Toni said she had more like a 75-80% chance. We headed out and stopped in Colfax at 3 for subway and diesel. We then stopped at Dusty to pick up a new mare from Tim Johnson’s.  We thought Kaine had a football game, so started hot trotting it home, we called Ben to see what the status was and found out Kaine was not playing Monday, since he was staring on varsity on Friday. So we throttled down and stopped in Washtucna and got mom and I coffees and Toni chai tea. We got home around 5ish, Kaine and Kade got home off of the activity bus. So the boys, Toni and I did chores, then the boys headed up to do their show animal chores. Toni, Tulip and I worked on the three colts, Tulip got Rich then 2, Toni had Dual, and I had Rich. Monday night we got a call to let us know that Molly also had a twisted gut, due to the compaction, however, it was still in phase 1, so none of her intestine had died, so they did not have to cut any of it out. She got up on her own after surgery, so that is great. But the next 24 hours were very critical, that she did not get septic.

Tuesday was still raining, and season temps. We were waiting to hear an update on Molly, but no news is good news? We told Mom that a lot. Kade had his last football game, Meachams went to it, minus Jaxsen, who stayed home and helped do chores. It was the excitement of his day. Kade played a good last game. It was a tough but fun game to watch. Anna was having fun at FFA Nationals, they have gone to a lot of cool places. I worked on the colts, they all did great. We had tying practice. Jaxsen helped me dr Wild. Ben and Kade cleaned the barn when Kade got home from football. I hate that it is getting dark so early. Molly is doing good, she’s been stable, no signs of colic.  She’s still on antibiotic. She’s eating food mixed with water (which was good that she’s interested in food).

Wednesday was sunny. The kids had a half day of school Jana came up and picked up Pearl and the orange heifer. Toni had two hearings in the morning then went in to the school to pick up Kade and Jaxsen and attend Jaxsen’s parent teacher conference. He had a couple of Bs which are not acceptable so he only got four books at the book fair. The Bs were really unacceptable because they were for not turning work in that he had actually completed. That is pretty bad. (FYI, those sentences were from Toni). Kaine had football practice, Toni picked him up after parent teacher conferences. The boys did chores and worked on their show animals. Anna was still at FFA National convention. Her FFA advisor posted on FB that it was their first convention day. Update on Molly: she was doing really well, she’s eating and drinking, they took her tube out today and took her for a walk outside. She does have some fluid in her lungs so they have her on pneumonia meds, however, that isn’t uncommon for after surgery. She does still have some inflammation in her small intestine, so they are continuing to monitor that.

Thursday was sunny. Everyone went to work in the morning. Kaine had football practice, Toni took him in and picked him up. Dad was going too but ended up having to go to work. Toni, Ben and the boys bangs vaccinated heifers and semen tested the big bulls since the boys did not have school. It went really well. The cattle were all pretty good. Only one heifer was waspy, but she wasn’t that bad. The biggest issue was that the Hereford heifers are mostly out of Scrat, so they are big, and don’t move fast. They require patience. Anna was still at FFA Nationals. Toni and the boys had chores down when I got home, they went down and did them when they got done with the cows.

Friday Kaine and I had dentist appts at noon. So we ran to Sagehill vet and picked up Absolute first thing, then took her to mom and dads. Absolute went to the vet on Monday too, but that was overlooked due to Molly. Absolute ended up having a bad strep infection. So she had to stay at Sagehill for a few days then gets another 10 days of medication. Absolute is really easy to dr and be around but is awful to load in the trailer, probably because they only time she gets loaded is to go to the vet or come home from the vet.  Then we got ready and ran to down and had lunch at Foodies in Richland. Toni and mom had been bragging about the shrimp po’boy sandwich, but they were out of shrimp. The hamburgers there were really good too. We came home after, Kade and Jaxsen were washing their steer and heifers to get ready for the show the following weekend. We went down to do chores and then at 4ish dad ran Kaine in to warm up for his game. Marlo came out and we had her lead Rich, I lead 2 and Toni lead Dual, and we took them for a walk about. Marlo, dad, Ben and I went into the varsity game. They played Royal City, it was a good game.

Saturday the boys game down and all three washed their heifers and Jaxsen washed Joker. Then we put halters on the Spokane steers. At noon we went to Connell for the Halloween party/Grandma is 92 party, the kids had a lot of fun.  Grandma doesn’t like us telling people how old she is. She does not like to be reminded of her age either. After we did chores.

Sunday we were supposed to have someone come out and look at 2, but he rescheduled. The men and boys went hunting in the morning. Kade got a few. I worked on pictures. In the afternoon we hauled out another load of mares, weaned the mini colts again and haltered the next three, Duke, Naughty and Groot.

I am pretty sure we are all still tired. We have found out quite a bit about Zimectrin Gold since the Molly incident. The internet is full of information that a person has to wade through. Some good info some bad. We don’t plan to continue using it in our program. Luckily we have a wonderful vet that has continued to help us through the trials and tribulations of equine ownership. And Morgan from Old Mil is going to exchange the Gold for Equimax, that Sheena is having us use instead. No matter how many years a person has owned livestock, and with knowledge passed down from generations of livestock ownership, there is always something new just around the corner to keep life interesting.

For a little donkey that didn’t love people when she got here, she has become a great asset as well as a pet.

On Monday we finally got the Conley heifer Kade bought back in the middle of September. We were happy with how she looked and we got to meet a new shipper. Dean Libheart lives in Centralia and goes all over if anyone needs a shipper. Really nice guy. He had some longhorns in the trailer, so Toni tried to buy a heifer for Ben.  Kaine’s football games were postponed to Tuesday, so just practice for everyone after school. Anna, McCall and Ben packed their last few items before they were leaving early on Tuesday for the Nile. They are going to have a good time. I am sad I am not going with them. Anna has her Nile heifer, “Lacy,” 7, 166 and a char heifer. McCall is taking Mayhem, Kaine’s heifer. We are also getting ready for the Western Showcase the beginning of November. Toni and I continued to work on the two colt and two fillies.

Tuesday was a cluster of a day, but did not end up too bad. Ben, McCall and Anna headed out at 12:30 Am to the NILE show in Billings, MT. The got there at around 11:30 MT. They got the char heifer checked in, beds made, and went to the club calf sale with Morgan, who met them there. Toni and mom took Cappy and Absolute to the vet. Absolute had the lavage removed from her eye. She kept her eye and hopefully has some vision in it. Cappy was getting travel papers, he might move to Oregon. Absolute was tired of going to see Sheena, so was not the best to load. Kaine and Kade both had football games, so all of adults left at home divided and conquered. And we hustled to get it done. Mom, Jaxsen and I went to Kaine’s game, the rest went to Kade’s game. Both boys played like the super stars they are. Jaxsen, mom and I ran down and got pizza, per dad’s request, for dinner and then picked Kaine up and went home. During the night Dude got out at Toni’s and ran around the house.

On Wednesday Anna showed the char heifer and her and McCall fit her. She did a great job, the heifer looked awesome, and she showed really well. I would say she was the best behaving heifer in the ring. We were all able to watch on the livefeed. I thought she should have won hands down, however, the judge liked them a little bit more moderate framed. Mini Tank left on Wednesday and took his time loading. However, Kendra said he hauled like a rockstar, exited the trailer gracefully and started grazing. Toni and I worked on the foals, Toni went up and got the trailer and we practiced loading them, they all did great. Boys got home and did chores, the man and boys did the cattle chores.

Thursday early morning Dude started getting out again. So Dude and Leroy got to switch pens. When studs start going through hotwire, you just have to do something different with them. Dude is really easy to get in and seemed to be more interested in the grain he found than anything else.  At the Nile, the Jr show started at one, so Anna, McCall and Ben got up and got them ready. Anna and her team did great, Gamora was a division champion, Lacey won her class and 7 was 4th in her class. Anna and Lacey showed well in showmanship. Anna had her Nile interview in between showing. I think they got done around 6 Montana time, then still had to wash and feed. McKenna flew in on Thursday. At home, Jaxsen had a BBQ for grid kids. We all pitched in and got chores done. We got a new mare on Thursday, Gracie. Gracie is a great mare and we are excited to get her. We have known Gracie for a few years now and she is one of the sweetest kindest mares out there. She also has a very nice pedigree out of a money earning cutting stud, Cats Stormin Oak.

Happy Birthday Jaxsen! Last year before you are a teenager, the big 1 2. Friday Anna and McCall showed open in the morning. They did not do as well with the open judge as with the Jr judge, however, they both did a great job showing and the heifers looked great. The Nile Merit heifer competition started at 1 with the progeny parade. We also shipped out Dun Bug to a long time buyer, Janice. He loaded amazing and they were loaded and gone quickly. Kaine had a varsity game at Ki Be, I forgot my camera, Kaine was supposed to take it down to moms with him, and he forgot it. So when Jade came out to get the camera we found it missing, so Toni ran to my house and got it.  The Nile Merit Heifer show started, Anna and Lacey won the black Angus class. They were 3rd overall in breeding. The other WA girl, Alyssa Williams, with a Hangin A heifer from Alan Alexander, was Grand champion. We are proud of both of the WA girls. Anna made it back for the final round in showmanship as well.  We are so proud of how well Anna and Lacey did. Thank you 3C on your generous donation. Jaxsen was student of the month, so Toni went to that assembly and picked-up Jax and Kade. Meachams did chores. It rained Friday, Diane and I went to Ki Be to watch Kaine. The weather has been so nice for the football games. It was a great game besides the rain and seasonal temps. Diane, Kaine and I went to Bob’s Burgers after the game. Toni made finger steaks for Jax’s bday so Marlo had dinner with the Meachams.

Jaxsen’s last Grid Kids game was Saturday. They had a good game and he rocked it like normal. After the game, Jaxsen’s two best friends came out for a small bday party. Because boys are boys they mostly ran around and fought each other with sticks.  Kaine and I went and picked up Jessie, Truffles and Nugget at Cecil and Debbies house, all of the minis are back home now. We had someone out looking at bulls on Saturday, so Kaine and I got the bulls in and sorted out the Herefords and older bulls, since they wanted a yearling Angus bull. They picked 204. Toni was then back from football and I took Kaine down to his second homecoming, to Camas’ school. Ben, Anna and McCall were on their way home from the Nile, they picked the Seldom Rest heifers up at Midland Bull Test. The also ran into some snow on the way home. But they made pretty good time.

Sunday Anna left again at 2:30 in the morning to head to FFA Nationals. Ben took her and Brandy to the airport. Our 11 oclock horse pickup got lost, so she was a little late. But Jethro loaded like a champ. We had Jaxsen birthday party at noon, pizza, it was great. Jaxsen got lots of great presents. Both of the afternoon people were also late, however, only one of them was lost. And the lost one we saw drive by, and they went clear around again. We wormed 6 foals while we waited and haltered three. We moved the Conley heifer up with the other show cattle. We quarantined her for the week just in case she got sick from the trip. She didn’t.  After everyone left we notice Molly was laying down, she was one of the six we gave Zimectrin Gold to. So we got some meds down her and we walked her for about an hr. She seemed better, so Toni and I went home. Mom texted at 10:30 she was down again. We went down to give her more meds and Toni told me she could walk her. Well, I found out the next morning that they had walked her all night.  I hear it got decently cold and windy. So Monday morning Molly was in at Sheenas at opening. That saga continues next week.

We are getting really into the halterbreaking. We are probably half done? Maybe less. Tulip has been nothing but exceptional. For a little donkey that didn’t love people when she got here, she has become a great asset as well as a pet. She still doesn’t let Kade catch her, maybe either big boy actually. Toni forgets Tulip doesn’t let him catch her, so sent him out to grab her the other day, Tulip ran off. We called Tulip over and she ran right to us and in the gate. Tulip is very amusing.

We are down to having 9 foals left for sale. We always find it interesting which foals don’t sell right away. Some that we think should sell quickly don’t. Others that we think might take longer to sell, don’t. We think all of the foals have been exceptional. I challenged Toni with telling me a foal she doesn’t like, she can’t. She has also wanted to keep all of them. It has been hard getting her to agree to sell anything. The colts are a little easier to sell since we don’t like riding geldings. The fillies have been like pulling teeth. And now that we are halterbreaking them, it has been extra hard because you get to see their personalities. These foals are just so nice. So if you see one you like and want to hear everything bad about it in an effort to get you not to buy, call Toni, she will tell you all bad things. Take them with a grain of salt.

Toni’s Pics

The best part of scrolling through pictures on the Google Drive, is when Toni uploads hers 3 weeks after the fact and you see some you missed.
