And just when you thought it could not get any hotter.

It is HOT HOT HOT outside.  Anna rode Kadee and Kade rode Slick first thing Monday morning, after feeding the show animals and getting them tied up under the fans. They washed after. We got their Nile Heifer videos submitted, applications in the mail. The kids did chores and then went up to take care of their show animals. Toni and I moved water. After dinner Ben, Kaine and I went out and fixed the fence around circle 4, the calves were crawling through it and it was no longer hot.

Tuesday was even hotter. Toni and my internet were both down, for different reasons. Since Toni works out of her house, she got herself an AT&T hotspot for the days her internet is down. Toni’s ac also went out. Her and Jaxsen weren’t feeling very well. Anna rode Kadee early again. The kids went down and did chores early, and Toni moved water before I got home. Anna texted after they got home that Kade’s heifer had a swollen area, I texted the picture to Sheena at Sagehill Vet, we decided it was most likely a sting, put some topicals on it, and waiting to see what it looked like in the morning. Anna, Kaine and I went out to let the heifers and steers loose at round 9, when it got down to the 90s, and then played with the donkey and mini horses for a bit.

By Wednesday you are just thinking is it ever going to cool down?? Kendel took the kids down to Scootney to swim in the lake after they got down washing their steers and heifers. Toni was working in her attic, it is cooler up there since it is a smaller area, less windows, and has it’s own AC unit. None of the steers or heifers ate well, it has just been too hot and not cooling down.  Toni and Jaxsen were both still sick. Toni didn’t even move the water on Wednesday, just left it where it was. We had also put a sprinkler on a railroad tie at the corral to let the horses in the corral go under it and get some relief from the heat.

Thursday Anna got up early to ride Kadee, it was like 77 that early, woohoo. Since it cooled down a little at night the heifers and steers started eating again. Toni still has not AC and no internet. Jaxsen thinks he is close to death. The bull got out and it was a little dramatic for Jaxsen.  By the time he finished his hysterics Toni had the fence fixed. He said it was the worst thing ever and Toni said it would have been worse on Wednesday.

Friday, all three of the big kids washed their heifers and steers first thing. Anna and I went out and checked cows after she got done washing, and we fixed a little fence. Then Anna, Kaine and I went to the dentist, we tried to go to lunch first, but Double Dragon is still not open for dine in. So I guess we did not try to go out to lunch, we did, but just not where we wanted. We went to Panda Express since it was basically across the street. Then we went to the dentist, went and got some groceries, got dinner for everyone, and came home. Chad and Andrew were out, so Toni was already down with them trimming horses. Kade did not feel well, we think he had a little heat exhaustion, so he was home napping. Anna, Kaine and Jaxsen went up to do cow chores when they got done with chores.

Friday night/Saturday morning our hay was baled, Kick was up all night watching that. Ben, Anna, Kaine and I got up at 4 to get the cows in and doctor eyes.  Toni got up at a more reasonable time since Allie was coming to preg check horses and bring Queenie and Cammie back. We were done working the calves by around 11, left the calves the kids plan to show in 2022 in, we had an early lunch break and then Toni called to tell me Allie was a few hrs out, so I told her I was going to sleep. Ben, Anna and Kaine cleaned the yard for a little while, and then Anna and Kaine took a nap and Ben went to fix circles. We woke up and Toni and Allie had finished, and it was chore time. Six of the seven mares that were checked were in foal, so that is great news. The bad news is that one of them already shows signs of complications, so now Toni has to get three mares in to give Regumate to and one mare twice per day to try to keep the complications at bay. It is going to be a long 11-month gestation.

Sunday our cousins came over for our annual go to the lake on the 4th event, Anna, Kaine, Kade, Ben and I were not here last year, we were at New Plymouth at a steer show, but they all came anyway. LOL Marlo got there early to help us set up. Mar and Leslie brought over street tacos, Mom brought potato salad and apricot pie (apricots were fresh from Kameron and Christine Jenks), Erina and Terry brought finger foods, and Kendel brought Tres Leche cake. Then we all went down to the lake.  At about 5 pm Leroy brought his herd into the middle of the party so everyone could see them. The foals did really well around the floaties and loud children. Leroy got petted by all that wanted to pet him, then the horses left. Toni and I took a break at chore time to go and do chores, Ben and Anna also took a break for the cattle chores. McCall and Leslie ran home to do their chores, but basically everyone stayed until around 10:30. Happy 4th Everyone.

Optimism springs eternal.

On this Memorial Day, we will be taking a moment to honor those who served our nation and are no longer with us. Mom and dad went to the St John cemetery with Skip to put out flowers. Toni and Kicker loaded out Fly Guy first thing in the morning (5 am) up a funky, but cool, side load ramp trailer. Fly Guy has always been a wonderful colt and took it all in stride. It was sad to see him go as we all loved him, but he had the misfortune to be born a colt, so we really couldn’t keep him. Then Toni and Kicker took the boys to Sterlings for brunch. Anna washed her heifers and steer. Ben worked on circles and I finished up the pictures from Saturday. Then the kids and I went for a ride out to check cows. Ed Hayes brought his mare out to get bred, we put her in with King. King wasn’t supposed to get so many mares this year, but with Colonel passing, King has had to step up and pick up the slack. So far he seems to doing ok with the job.

Tuesday everyone was back to work and school. Kade was supposed to have a baseball game, but it was canceled, but he still had practice so dad took him in. Marlo went in to watch it. We had people out to look at Shi on Tuesday.  Shi is a really sweet filly, but is a touch hotter than our normal foals so is going to need the right person. Hottie’s stitches came out of her neck and she got turned out in the pasture. For those that don’t know, Hottie has sarcoids that we have had removed in the traditional method now twice. In the removal process, if the roots aren’t taken out, the sarcoids come back worse. For the last several years we have been trying alternative methods on the sarcoids to try to reduce or get rid of them. Some methods have had some success, others, not so much. Luckily, we have Dr. Sorensen who is willing to work with us to see what works. This latest test was inserting part of the sarcoid into Hottie’s neck to try to stimulate an autoimmune response to attach the sarcoids on her leg. This process could take up to six months, but so far so good. The kids did chores, mom made rhubarb pie, Toni and I hand bred the paint mare D, dad and Toni both moved water. Kicker and Ben worked on circles and did cow chores. The kids fed their show animals and cleaned out the barn.

Wednesday was HOT HOT HOT, as I am SURE you are all aware. Blue had a cute colt by Colonel, this is our last Colonel baby. We were hoping for a chromey filly, but you get what you get and hope that it is healthy. Toni and I took some new pics of Tank, since he is out on green pasture. He was not really that interested in getting pictures, he wanted to eat.  Kade also had a Jr. High orientation at 6 pm that Toni took him to. Not many people showed up, but Kade is now oriented.

Thursday the heat continued. Shady had a cute filly by Double, she is a full sister to the yearling colt we are keeping, Cappy.  When Toni did chores she noticed a railroad tie was hit out of line, she tried to push it back, but the railroad tie was too heavy.  Isidro brought Abril’s mare out to breed to Dude, as Abril wants a really gentle easy foal to deal with. Water got moved, chores got done, everyone thought that the heat was too much too quickly. Kade had a baseball game, Toni and dad went. Kade says they won.

Friday I expanded Leroy’s pen, with it being so dry out they were already running short on grass. He is out on a dry pasture, some desert ground. I do not know that he has a lot more grass now, but at least it has not been grazed yet. The kids got home from school, we moved water, did chores, etc. Kade had his last baseball game, Kicker came down and got him and took him to it. Marlo came out and brought out strawberries. She helped the kids with their steers, specifically Jaxsen. We tried to hand breed Dee the paint again, but King has been with her and acted like he had already done it. King also has Eddie in his pen getting bred. We had people come out to get meat Friday night.

Saturday we had people come out to get meat. Britta came out to look at her foal, she brought a friend for the tour. We had people come and put a deposit down on Gunz. The kids worked on their steers and heifers. The shags and I chased the cows out of Gunner’s pen and moved Gunner’s pen into the irrigated grass. They were happy to be in there. We moved Blue in with Tank, and Blackie into the heavy pen. Mom made us strawberry shortcake with homemade whipped crème.

Sunday we went and checked the cows in the morning, saw we had some bad eyes. So Ben, Kaine, Anna and I got the cows in and doctored the few eyes. Toni, Kicker, Kade and Jaxsen went out to breakfast and went to an escape room on Sunday, no, they did not make it out. On their way home they saw that some jackwad had wrecked a car through three sections of our desert fence. This is the second time in 2 years that Franklin County Sheriff’s office has failed to notify us when our fence is completely down. Last year Toni talked to the Sheriff about it and said that when a livestock fence is down, it is imperative that deputies notify landowners so that livestock is not out on the road. Needless to say Toni was not very happy on Sunday, especially after she found out it was the exact same deputy as last year that was out at this wreck, on the exact same fenceline, and once again failed to notify us. It is pretty disappointing that a Sheriff in a rural community isn’t taking livestock safety more seriously. If we hadn’t moved Gunner’s pen the day before, it could have been a real wreck since the car went through the fence right where Gunner’s pen has been hanging out. No one wants to see a wreck with livestock. Toni and I put a big bale in with King’s pen, did chores . Mom made us strawberry pie. It was awesome.

It was nice to have a weekend home to work on all the ranch stuff that gets pushed to the wayside when we have cattle shows to go to.  It hasn’t been great to go from hot to windy, chased away by more wind, but luckily we have irrigation water. Our friends without irrigation water are really hurting in this drought.  Hopefully we get some rain, not that any is in the forecast. Optimism springs eternal.

Sorry this is a few days late. Lots of fun and summer is just hitting its stride.

Monday everyone was exhausted from a busy weekend, Kade felt like they should get to stay home from school to rest. No such luck. It was a little bit breezy and chilly for May, but, not bad. Everyone was in Monday morning, so that was a win. Boys all had practice, dad took Kade and Jaxsen.  Anna went up and took care of the show animals. Caleb and Kelten came out to hook up the new pump Monday night for the yard and big run irrigation. Kaine went out and mowed Russian Olive trees, which is a never-ending job!

Tuesday Kaine and Kade had baseball games, and Jaxsen had practice. Kaine’s team played Burbank and they won. Kade’s teamed played Basin City, they did not keep score, but we decided they won. It started to pour down rain, so Jaxsen’s practice was canceled part of the way through, dad went down to get him, but he caught a ride with another mom up to the Junior High, so they missed each other. Jaxsen kept telling his ride that was his mom’s car, so they kept chasing people around Connell. So it took a few minutes to find him. It was Ben and my 19th wedding anniversary, so Ben brought home Checos for us all.

Wednesday we woke up to two foals, just as I was starting to wonder if they were every gong to foal.  Rosie had a big pali colt with lots of chrome out of Double. Peyton had a tiny little smutty buckskin roan filly out of Jackpot that had the umbilical cord dragging on the ground. Toni is calling her Spunky, mom and dad are calling her Twiggy. We already have a Twiggy, but I guess they are ignoring that. I call her Spunk, so I guess maybe she is the horse with too many names?? Toni got Spunk and Peyton in, got the cord clamped, and we moved them over to the old mare pen to keep an eye on the tiny girl. She is very friendly and maybe thinks she is a dog.  Kade had a baseball game at 5. Kaine was officially done and was home for chores.

Thursday was super busy as the kids got ready to leave for the Angus show. This is Jax’s first show of the season and the other three kids’ fourth show. After school and chores, the kids went to start getting the tackbox packed up, bags packed, food packed, and stick their heifers that hadn’t been sticked before.  There was also some concern about Jax’s steer (named Dagger on Thursday) and whether he had been sticked. Luckily Anna had stepped up and helped Jax more than he realized or cared about.

Friday we packed up the trailers and headed to Ellensburg to the Jr Angus Field Day. We got there and got everyone washed, checked into the hotel. The kids all had fun.  We had our four kids, Traci had her three, four adults, with 9 head of cattle. Our group was the largest. Due to the other shows in the area and farming, the Angus show wasn’t as well attended as normal, but it was still a great group of people, good quality cattle, and a good location.  Friday night we were provided free pizza and a fitting and clipping clinic put on by Matt Rosman and Tanner and Colter Meads.  Big shout out to Matt Rosman who told the kids that they need to rinse/wash their cattle twice per day. Thanks for that. Anna has taken you seriously.

Saturday morning we got up and washed the heifers and steer again. Anna, Kaine, Kade and Sydney Rylaarsdam competed in the fitting contest. Natalie and Jaxsen helped Eric as the judge. Our kids did not win. Eric told us afterwards that Jaxsen was all about his brother NOT winning. After that the show started, with PeeWees, then seniors, intermediates and then Juniors. All of the kids showed great, Anna was the Intermediate champion and Kade was the Jr Reserve champion. In confirmation, Jaxsen showed his steer first, he was third steer overall, and 2 months younger than the rest of the steers (in registered classes it is by age and not weight) so that was really good. Kaine had a bred and owned heifer, she was second in her class, so she went back to the championship round. Natalie and Savannah’s heifers were our first class of owned heifers. They were first and second in their classes, so both got to go back. Both of Kade’s heifers were second in their classes, so they both came back. Kaine’s Cox heifer was third in her class, so she did not get to come back. Anna’s heifers were 1st and 5th in their class, so one of Anna’s got to come back. All in all a great show. Then we packed up and headed home. D the paint came on Saturday to get bred again.

Sunday we had lots of people scheduled to come, so we were busy all day. However, first thing was Fly Guy leaving, and they postponed until Monday. Anna worked on her heifer and steer. Kaine and I took the minis over the Cecil and Debbies house. Toni and Kade showed horses while we were gone. Ben and Kicker were working on putting irrigation line in the riding horse pen. Toni and I then got Gunner in to bred the paint. D still does not like him, she is a maiden mare and is not inter Gunner. So we put King in with her, she liked him a little better. We hauled Gunner back out. Cousin Jodi showed up with Sam the gelding back. Her kids are nor riding him, so they are gong to sell him. So if you are looking for an older grey grade gelding we have one at the house looking for a new home.

With Fly Guy gone, we are sold out of yearling colts. We have the 2 fillies left for sale for the right person and Gangster. Lots of fun and summer is just hitting its stride. The kids have a few weeks left of school, and let me assure you, they are counting down. We still have some overbaked foals that need to come out, but we are down to the last few to foal. When it gets hot like this, it makes it hard to get excited about breeding mares, but we still get it done.
