What an amazing week.

Monday was a day for the books. We woke up to snow and it was snowing hard, I guess a late April Fools Day joke?? Toni went and checked and Lura had a beautiful blue roan colt. Lura is a range mare, Toni attempted to get her into the barn, but she was anti. Luckily the colt was big, healthy, and was sucking, so at some point you have to weigh the stress of trying to get them in with leaving them alone. In this case, where Lura really didn’t want to come in, it made sense to leave her. The cows decided that they did not want to be out in the sagebrush anymore, and we do not want to have to feed them, so they continued to come home all day, they just have to cross a plowed field to come home. Toni and the kids fought with them most of the day before taking them home. Lane came to see Anna and got the spend the day running behind the cows. It had stopped snowing at that point, but they got to sort and document which cows and calves they had in the hail. Toni had Lane and Anna stand in the covered part of the barn while they sorted as Lane was a guest. Bull 134, who is in with the show heifers, somehow got out of the corral and went up to Gayles house in the middle of the night. Gayle thought it was Hayley’s bull, Hayley called Ben because it was not her bull, so Anna and Hayley got him in. Anna was leaving Wednesday morning to Reno, so trying to get packed. They finally got done and came down and we did chores. Throughout the day they had rain, snow, hail, lightening. We got chores done and went out to check. We went to hook up Butte to the red trailer, since dad was going to Inchelium and Daisy on Tuesday and the battery was dead. So we jump started Butte, unhooked the camper and hooked up the trailer. Here is hoping for a better day tomorrow.

Tuesday we just had frost in the morning, a big improvement. Dad headed North first thing after Anna loaded the bulls. A straggler cow, 813, was waiting at the house to be let into the pasture. Toni and Jaxsen went out to check and found Running Sparkles and her new blue roan colt by Gunner. I called to change our reservation to Reno to Wednesday instead of Tuesday as check in date and the guy I talked to changed it to be one day. So then I had to call back and they said they did not have any rooms. I said my reservation was literally just changed, so that room should still be available. What do they said about April, in like a lion and out like a lamb?? Toni, Kade and Kaine fixed a pole on Jackpot’s pen and a pole on King pen Tuesday night. And brought in enough poles to put up some hill fence. Toni wanted to get the hillside between the old mares and King replaced over spring break. That is her goal. Her and I have been putting in posts for awhile, slowly, so now it is just getting the poles up, some panels at the top, and packing the wire out. It doesn’t sound hard but it is time consuming. Anna packed to leave on Wednesday. She went and got a wool suit jacket from Toni as Reno is not known to be warm in April.

Wednesday morning bright and early Kat and Kady showed up to pick up Anna and head to Reno. Ben had a pot of coffee on and breakfast sandwiches made. On my way to work I saw that Shasta had foaled, so I texted. When Toni got down there she say Shasta and Zoie had both foaled. Zoie had a stunning filly with a big blaze and two blue eyes, so Toni got more pictures of that one than of Shasta’s. Both were really nice foals. After the kids worked on steers, Toni and the boys put up a couple more sections of wood fence on the hill and got the panels up. The boys actually thought it would be a good plan to wench the panels to the top of the hill and wasted quite a bit of time trying to make that work. The wench cable just wasn’t long enough, so everyone ended packing panels and wood poles up the hill anyway. They got all but the brace at the top done and taking down the old fence. Chores were still normal, doctoring the heifer, doctoring baby Blackie, and Double. Then feeding and checking.

Thursday I left bring and early for Reno, Anna and Kady started showing in the afternoon, so I had to get on the one flight out of Pasco in the AM. Toni and the boys planned to leave for the Pomeroy jackpot on Friday. So Toni called the boys to see when she should go down and watch them practice showing their steers. They were up working on their boat. She wanted to know which steer was named boat, but it was an actual boat. The boys went back to the barn and got their steers in show halters and did a mock round of showing. Toni said she wasn’t super happy, but they boys are big enough and tough enough that she wasn’t going to worry about it.  Toni and Jaxsen finished the fence, putting up the brace on the end; chopping and picking up all the barbed wire and getting it out. Then chores.

Friday was a busy day all around. In Reno we had the Jr Angus show and the PG&S. Anna and Electra were 4th in thier PG&S class and Kady had a division reserve champion with Spike. Toni, Kaine, Kade and the BB crew headed to Pomeroy for the Garfield County show.  They had a late start because Leslie had a tire issue. So the boys loaded their steers, then unloaded their steers. They did everything pretty much on their own. Took the pick-up and hooked it up, loaded everything, including the steers, then went and picked up Toni. Mom sent them with a bunch of baked goods and so did one of the neighbors. They got to Connell right when the BB crew was loading. So after a brief chat with grandma they were on their way. They had a good, uneventful trip and got to Pomeroy in good weather. All the steers unloaded great and acted like pros. Lots and lots of friends and some family were there. 75 steers were entered in the show, with many coming Saturday morning. Still lots of people on Friday. The crew visited and had dinner, then got ready for Saturday. At home Marlo and Jaxsen were in charge of horse chores. So a big thanks to Marlo for taking care of all of that.

Saturday was another busy day. In Reno we had the Open Angus show and we had a good time. Back in Pomeroy, for once the weather was actually good. No snow, no hail, no real rain. Most of the exhibitors showed up and the steers did great. Kaine and Kade, along with their cousins, all showed great. With 75 head entered, there were lots of spectators and people everywhere. The boys handled their steers really well and placed well.  While at the show, Toni received a text from Jaxsen with pictures of a pole down at the corral, her heifer out, and the caption, “We have a problem.” Luckily Mom and Jax got all the gates shut, so the heifer was locked in and Ben was able to come put everything back to what it should be. The show was done about 3, so after cleaning out and loading, they hit the road for home. Both boys napped while Toni drove. They planned for Toni to do chores while they washed their steers, but chores were done by Kick and Ben, so the boys went and washed steers and Toni went and doctored baby blackie and Double, grabbed Jax, and headed home.

Happy Easter. We headed back from Reno. Mom and Dad had easter eggs hid in the backyard for the boys. The boys told Toni she couldn’t see the eggs so she couldn’t easter egg hunt so of course she did. She took Anna’s spot. She tied with Kade for the most eggs. After that Ben went and made dinner for the people staying home. No Easter foals. So that was disappointing. But a great Easter for everyone. Great food, good people. Uncle Skip showed up later in the day and spent the night. I got home around chore time and went down to help. Anna unloaded her heifer and started her chores. Ben had gotten the rim and tire fixed on my Colorado so I had that to drive again.

What an amazing week. Anna had a great trip to Reno. It was her first time there. We are so proud of all that she is doing and participating in. Anna has gone from being pretty introverted to pushing her boundaries to become the best version of her. The three boys really stepped up this week as well and took on extra responsibility to help keep things going on the ranch. All of these kids are hard working and dependable. Jaxsen may not love the ranch work, but he understands that we have a responsibility to take care of our livestock and be good stewards of our land. So all-in-all we had a great and productive spring break week!

April showers bring May grass. Yes the saying is April showers bring May flowers but ranchers care way more about grass than flowers.

Monday was an interesting day to say the least. Blackie had a beautiful filly that had some mystery punctures on her right leg. They look like a dog bit her, but no one can figure out how that could have happened. Toni had court then went down and mom and Toni got her moved into the shed. Dad went to fertilize the pasture, his old tractor broke down, so dad and Toni went up and got the Case, and he used that. But then the fertilizer spreader broke down. Toni felt like she was down there most of the day and was not productive getting her work done.  Coco and Shea made it up from CA on Monday to see everyone and Coco could finish packing up her house. Shea had a great time doing chores with us. Coco jinxed us and said we had not had any red colts yet, we got out to the desert and guess what, Lola had a red colt. He is a bright red flashy red colt. When we got back from checking the mares in the desert there was a pole down on the driveway, so we popped that up. All 4 kids worked on their steers, and Anna worked on her heifers as well.  Anna is headed to Reno next week to show her heifer and compete for the Western Angus Queen title. We know she will do a great job, but all four states will be sending really great girls for the coveted title.

Tuesday morning Rosie B had a cute bay roan filly. As it was the Twins’ b-day, they got to name the filly. When Toni was checking cows she saw a pair of eagles nesting across the ditch on some USBR ground. Toni went and got Shea from Kendel when she got back and Jaxsen got to watch her when he got home. Coco, Shea, Toni and I went out to check horses. Toni is teaching her horse colors so she can go to preschool knowing her colors. You know, red is sorrel- no such thing as white, only gray. Good thing Shea isn’t old enough to really be corrupted yet.

Wednesday the kids had a half day of school and we had parent teacher conferences. Toni went out to see grandma in-between conferences and grandma wants to see Leo. Mom and dad went to Wilbur to take bulls to Dan, Rusanne and Seth Wagner. Toni and mom fed the mares since I was at conferences. Toni also put in another post on the hill.

Thursday we got a skidsteer on tracks to help us with the Russian Olive Tree battle. The boys are really excited about it. Toni, Anna, Kaine, Kade and Jaxsen went to farm fair to help set up the Cattlemens booth, then went and got groceries for the cattle shows and then went to lunch. Then they went back to Farm Fair and picked up Shea from Coco. Jaxsen watched her for a while and then Anna watched her. She did not nap, so Coco and Shea did not check horses with us since Coco was trying to get her to nap. Bailey had a cute colt on Thursday, his name is Bailey Bug after Toni and Kicker’s niece who shares the same birthday. Toni and I turned Lightening Bug and Freida out of Jackpot’s pen and put Cinder in.

Friday dad used the Case and harrowed the pastures again. Toni helped him get in through the gates. While she was waiting, she worked on the hill fence for a bit. She was supposed to have a trial Friday but it got moved again. This trial has been moved 4 times I think? Toni is pretty annoyed about it. Marlo came to do chores and her and Toni went and checked, BB had a cute buckskin, possibly buckskin roan filly by King.

Saturday we got up early to get to work on fencing. It was April Fools day and Shorty foaled and had a cute little fooler. We got the bulls in and sorted Vern’s bull out so he could pick him up. Kade went to shooting practice then they went and got the skidsteer and got it running and out moving trees. Ben worked on fence and went and picked up the 5th wheel. The rest of the kids worked on their steers and heifers. Kade worked on his as well when he got home. Toni, Kaine, Jaxsen and I, and later Anna, Kade and Shea, worked on the fence on the bottom of circle 5 and 6. We had way too much fence work to do. We had to rebuild braces, restring wire, really almost a compete redo. We think we made it better. Kaine and Jax were really good help. We also cleaned up all of the old fence and boards that were down there and buried the jump wire part way across. The area that we were really having to do the most work in was very very rocky, so there were some real challenges. We also encountered wind, rain, hail, sun, then repeat the cycle. We decided to bring all of the mares in out of the desert once the fence was fixed so we would have less to do on Sunday. For some reason they missed their normal gate. Luckily Ben was down checking out our work and was able to get the gates open and let the mares in through the new gates. I drove over a rock trying to get the mares to go the right way and ruined my tire so had to walk back to the desert. Then we worked on the fence at the bottom of circle 6. Same weather- hail, rain, wind, sun, repeat. Once we got those fencing projects done we went back to get chores done.

Sunday the kids continued to work on heifers and steers and Kade had shooting in the afternoon. We got the Hereford cows and riding horses in off of the corn field. Ben and Anna rolled up the wire and the men and Anna picked up posts. Toni and I went to circle 5 and got all of the mares in. There were only 20, so they fit pretty good in the corral. Then we sorted and took the 4 red pairs down to the desert, the 2 crème pairs to Sagebug, and Shorty pair to Tank.  Toni and I moved Gunner and his mares to the desert, then went and got Rosie B and Revel from Mom’s and hauled them out as well. So Gunner has 10 mares.  It hailed on us, rained on us, the wind blew. Camas came over and asked Kaine to Sadies. Spoiler- he said yes.

Weekends here are not for resting.

Monday morning everyone looked like they were still where they were supposed to be when I left. Dad took Kaine and Kade to school early for weight lifting with the Football Team. The water went in the ditches at our house on Monday, the sand hill cranes are out and the water is in the ditch, happy first day of spring. Twist foaled Monday, finally another foal. Monday was Julian’s birthday so we named the colt, who is by Witty, KT Witty Twisted Jule, Julian’s nickname is Juju, so we have Juju. We also had some nice rain on Monday and things are starting to green up.

Tuesday I spotted the heifer on my way to work. So I took a pic and sent it out.  It was proof of life since she is still holed up on the cattails and we haven’t been able to locate her hidyhole. Dad took Gin to Jordan’s on Tuesday to meet John Gray. Gin is headed to the other side of the mountains to get bred to “Sonny,” KT Son of a Gun.  He is a really cool stud we raised out of Gunner and our old mare Big Mama. John has done a great job with him and is standing him over on the West side of WA. John’s ranch is bouldercreekqh.com The kids went to school at regular time on Tuesday.  We took lots of pics of Juju when we were doing chores Tuesday, he is a super cute colt. We are really happy that Holly Miller (she is on FB Rafter HR Quarter Horses) is standing Witty- a son of our Colonel stud out of our super awesome Peppy mare, Witty is Friday’s full brother.

Wednesday was a crazy day. Toni got a call Wednesday morning that the helicopter could come in and spray the Russian Olive Trees as long as they could do it that day. We were not ready since earlier they said we needed to wait until it warmed up. She called McCall, who works at Wilbur Ellis ( if you need a good agronomist or suggestions on chemical call her). Got McCall and the helicopter guy group chatting about getting the chemicals. Next, she called Kendel and Kendel, Toni and Scarlett went to work. They got the horses out of circle 5, moved panels down to block the hole in the fence. Got the riding horses in, who then got out in the drive way and the mares tried to get Gunner to bred them and the geldings tried to herd them away. They got them back in, in the meantime Noisy, Jaxsen cow, was calving so they were watching her. Then they went down and got Libby in, who has been at the bottom of circle 7 trying to get the heifer in. We were trying to use Libby to bait the injured heifer out of the cattails. When you are an old show cow you do not even get a real halter, Scarlett lead Libby out of the back of the pickup with a bailing twine halter. They got everything in just as the helicopter showed up and started spraying. We are really happy to get the trees sprayed while we have the cows somewhere else. The timing was really good for us. It just came together really quickly.

Thursday Truffles the mini mare foaled and had a cute silver black colt, he was the only foal on Thursday. Dad loaded up a Hereford bull and took it over to Central Ferry. He was tasked with going out with Sonny and picking out two longhorn heifers for Ben after he dropped the bull off.  The heifers were a touch wild, so they got in the ones they could. Dad wasn’t very impressed with them.  They are very fun colored, so that is good. The heifers need some work if Ben wants to keep them as pets. Dad wants to name them after his twin aunts, Jeffra and Zephra, but we aren’t sure that is a good idea. I want to name them Wilma and Betty. We fed, did chores, etc. We are still putting fence in up the hill, so trying to put at least one post in per night. We are pulling out another barbed wire fence that has been in use as long as we have had the ranch. We are replacing it with a wood fence to keep King on one side and the old mare pen on the other. So not a high-pressure fence, but we want it to look good.

Friday I went around and checked everything and saw that Fancy had a pretty new filly. Lots and lots of chrome, beautiful Tank baby. Fancy likes to have mini-mes. Last year she had a mini tank, this year she has a mini her.  I went to work on the riding horse fence after checking. Toni had a meeting in Othello and brought lunch home for us. I got quite a bit of the fence in.  I also sorted all the heifers, bulls, and steers at my house to get ready for steer weigh-in. Any of the steers that the kids want to take to BF Fair or CBJLS have to be weighed in. One of our friends was short a couple so he came over and bought the last two ½ clubs that we had. We also needed to select one more for Jax. So after chores Toni, Anna, Kade, Kaine, and I went out and looked at the steers. Very interesting that Jaxsen wasn’t there to select his own steer, but whatever. We got him a steer out of his old show heifer Zora.

Saturday had steer weigh in in the morning. We hauled 12 steers in, 3 for each kid.  Kaine and dad went to Camas’s game after, the rest of the kids worked on their steers and heifers. We worked on fence on Saturday and moved horses around. We also put the bulls through the chute to work them. The heifer had finally come out of the cattails and the men got her to the haystack area, so we got her into the corral to get her on feed and try and take care of any infection she may have in her leg. I took the trailer with 8 poles in it down to Mom’s and we put some poles up on the new fence. The worst part about putting a wood fence in is walking the heavy poles up the hill. Kade suggested that we hook a wench to the top of the hill and wench them up. It is a thought. Kade and Kaine left to untie their show cattle leaving Jax to help us put up the last few poles. Jax either needs to get good at using the power tools or get some muscle to hold the poles up. One or the other.

Sunday the kids worked on their steers and heifers again. We haltered the three that weren’t halter broke. Again, another long day fixing/building fence. Mom and Dad headed up to Allie’s with Abs who is going to be bred to Hired Gun (very exciting!).  We also had some friends out to look at Twists’ colt, Juju. They have 2 mares that are his ¾ sisters, they are out of Twist and Colonel. They come out to visit quite a bit. While Toni was driving them around she saw that Ellie had a dunalino colt by Jackpot and Pinky had a bay filly by Gunner. A bay with a blaze, our kryptonite. After we got all of our Sunday projects done, we needed to get Twist out of the desert because she was the only one that foaled out there that could be rebred. We decided to see if we could go catch her on the 500 acres and lead her to the trailer, then trailer her and the colt out in the middle of it all. Luckily it worked out fine. We hauled her to the corral to watch her for signs of heat to do a re-breed. We got the bull in to haul to my house to put out with the cows and Strawberry was in heat so she was brought in to go to Gunner. Anna and McCall clipped Anna’s heifer to go to Reno. They did a great job and she looked fantastic after. I am sure we did some other stuff but I can’t remember. Every weekend day is just stacked with stuff to get done. Weekends here are not for resting.
