For the first week of summer vacation, we hit the ground running.

Monday was the official start of summer vacation. Lots and lots to do. Fence fixing, halter breaking Jaxsen’s giant steers, riding horses, etc. There were 2 hours of school which Kade decided he needed to go to so he could see his gf. He admitted he didn’t even go to his classes, he went to hers. Toni took him in because the other kids refused to waste 2 hours of their life at school. Dad took the boys into football practice and picked them up. They had games on Tuesday and Wednesday and then we were headed to Filer for the Angus Regional show. Anna fixed King’s pen again, Toni moved Yo and Yo Chic back to the house to see if that would solve the problem. It did not, so after work I hauled King to my house, he is in with the longhorn heifers and watusi bull, and the mares to mom and dads. We are going to haul some old mares down to circle 6 later. We also kicked Sally and Saul out of the corral out into the pasture, Saul just ran and ran and ran.

Tuesday morning Toni took mom to see grandma. Anna and the boys worked on their steers. Kaine went fishing with his friend Keegan for a little while. Kade clipped his fall heifer. I went to see grandma in the afternoon. Toni and the boys rode with Jara to Royal for a football scrimmage. The wind had started blowing when they left, and it was blowing harder when I went, about 30 minutes behind them, and it was terrible when we all got there. However, the boys played a great game, they played some big schools, like Hanford and Moses Lake. Anna and the men started packing and organizing the trailer while we were gone to leave early on Thursday.

Wednesday morning Jarra texted that she was still digging dirt out of her eyes, I texted my ears too. Toni said people pay good money for that type of sand abrasion at spas. Toni took the boys to the tri-cities. Kade had an orthodontist appointment, then to see grandma and then they had a football scrimmage at 11. Abby, Kade’s gf, came and sat with Toni for the game. Jarra and another friend also were there roasting in the sun. Wind and dirt on Tuesday, hot sun beating down on Wednesday. The boys played Pasco, a 4A school and were on fire. Kade made a td, Kaine was told, as a sophomore, he will be a varsity starter, which he also was last  year as a freshman. They had a good game. Toni had forgotten her camera, so maybe they play better with no camera tracking their every move? Dad and Anna took the heifers and steers in to get their travel papers to go to Filer and then went to Bryans to pick up beef. 

Thursday morning early, we headed to Filer, Idaho for the Angus Regional Show. We needed to check in by 2 and made it in plenty of time. Kacey and Kady had saved us spots by them. We got unloaded and set up and checked in. Ben went and unloaded our bags at the air bnb then we went to Twin Falls for dinner at a Mexican Restaurant that was really good. Jaxsen got to help Toni for chores. He was complaining from the beginning. We had another outside mare come in for Cappy on Wed, so Toni and Jax checked everything, cut some trees, then when they got home they could hear a kitten somewhere. After searching, they found him in the trailer. Toni made Jax take off his shirt and lock her in the trailer, where she proceeded to trap the kitten and get scratched. Jax also requested to be allowed to go to the school and lift weights to get ready for football, so Toni had him load the trailer with hay. Jax did not think it was quite the same thing. Again, lots of complaining. Toni also wanted to start a fencing project while we were gone because the weather was cooler, Jax did not want to do that either. Too bad for him.

Friday we had showmanship in the afternoon. We washed and the kids clipped on their heifers and steers some before the show started. We were after the AORB and Herefords, but the judge went through them pretty fast. The kids did a great job showing and their heifers did well. Back at home Toni had people come look at the minis and sold one of the fillies. Then went to work. While we were gone she took her pick-up into get repaired as it smelled like burning oil. For anyone that doesn’t know, Toni has had one of her pick-ups burn up while her and the boys were feeding hay a few years ago, so she kind of freaks out when there is any burning smell. Luckily it was an easy fix and she had Kade’s pick-up to drive while hers was in the shop. Dad and Kick went and picked hers back up. Toni and Jax also put in more posts on the fenceline.

Saturday was the breeding classes and jackpot steer show. Kaine and Mayhem won their division. Everyone else was first or second in their class. So everyone did great. Then we packed up the trailer and got ready to head home on Sunday. We went to Twin Falls and had dinner again. Back at home Crystal foaled, so we got a really fancy chestnut (maybe gray) filly sired by Leroy. That was good because with Crystal’s pedigree, if she had a colt, it might have been a fight to see if we kept it as a potential stud. But because it is a filly no fight necessary. Some people came down from Spokane to look at the colts and got the grand tour. They couldn’t decide, so had to go home and think on it. Toni and Jax moved six old mares out to circle 6 in  hopes that they would stay in. Then chores.

Sunday Ben and Anna got up early and fed and watered the heifers and steers then came and picked up the boys and I and we headed for home. We made it home by around 3 and unloaded and assisted chores. The family back home went to Lyon’s Ferry KOA for lunch with Kicker’s parents for fathers day. After we all got back, Kade and Toni rode Gen for the first time since we got him back, and he is fun. Kade also rode Stormy then Toni and Kade went on a ride during the big storm. Stormy is doing really great.

For the first week of summer vacation, we hit the ground running. It seems like we have so many plans for the summer, but we just manage to accomplish work and exhaustion. We are down to one summer fencing project, lots of cattle shows, and just general work. We are still getting up to Spokane running mares back and forth about once every couple of weeks, so still lots of miles on the road. We are really excited to have the kids home for the summer which is our main chance to enjoy them as they grow up. Summer is our favorite.

Currently Coffee is the fan favorite at the ranch. He is a striking black colt, he is possibly a blue roan, that loves attention. In typical Mocha foal fashion, he comes up to see us when we were checking and likes a good scratching. Mocha is a favorite mare to everyone that meets her, and her foals are favorites to everyone that buys one. On the top side he is a grandson of Cue Bars Laddie, an AQHA point earning and producing stallion. On the bottom side his breeding includes Smart Little Lena, Docs Oak, Tuff Continental, Jackie Bee, Imperial Dixie, Thirsty Blue Boy, Coy’s Bonanza, Wimpy, Skipper W, Little Joe the Wrangler and more. This is a solid back colt without any white, nice sold black hooves and has a lot of bone.

It felt like this week just flew by.

Chad and I thought for sure Reba would foal Sunday night after being trimmed, no such luck. I brought Old Red to work on Monday to get the windshield fixed, it has a rock chip. Toni chopped some Russian Olive Trees Monday morning, and got a thorn threw her shoe. Then she heard a ruckus at the gate and ran down there, since we moved Queenie, CeeCee and Red Robin are in a herd by themselves. CeeCee does not like the rest of the horses in the pen, so she was down in the corner. Gunner felt she needed to be in his heard, since she normally is, so he was trying to break her out. He had the fence grounding out so Toni fixed it and he went back to his mares. Benelli is already in heat at Allie’s, so NZ Scotch Time semen is on its way to breed her.  We are so thankful for Allie and for Codi who owns NZ Scotch Time for everything they have done to get the mares bred.

Still no Reba foal on Tuesday. Toni cut down more Russian Olive Trees when she was checking. She wore her boots this time so no trees through the foot. Rob had some extra hours on the machines he rented, so the men and three older kids were out moving dirt after they finished chores. Kade on the Case, Kaine on the Kitten, Anna on the backhoe and the men on the big loader, I think Ben was mainly running gates. Toni and I checked, no new foals, we have Red Robin’s colt, Smokin, some scratches.

Guess what, still no Reba foal Wednesday morning, or Twiggy, Cammie, etc. We are in a foal drought!  Toni had court at 10 and 2, so she did not get a lot of trees cut when she was checking. The older 3 kids were still working with the equipment on Wednesday night. Kyle showed up and got his bull, M205. We had some rain showers, and they got in right as it started pouring.

Still nothing on Thursday. Kaine was home sick, I think he was overly tired from his late-night tractor driving. Toni cut down some more trees. Ben took 138 in to get semen tested so he could head to Montana the following week. Thursday we are still working on horses, feeding everything due to the lack of grass (cold weather), working on getting mares bred, and normal chores. We still go out and feed Gunner’s pen and the heavy horses in circle 5. Circle 5 went from 40 head of mares to 6 head, but they still want some hay.

The weekly theme of no foals continues on Friday. Dad and Kaine went to Soap Lake to get his steer’s feet trimmed before Spokane. I had a guy, Joseph, coming out to pick up his heifer, he was working in Olympia but headed back to Texas with her. We did a small tour before we got on his way. Dad and Kaine were back when we went on our tour, so dad and Kaine talked to him for a few minutes as well. Dad went home and Kaine and I went to Moses Lake to try to get his farmer’s permit, which I guess we were supposed to do the pre apply online and not bring in the printed forms, so that was a fail. So we went and picked up our pork at Block 40 Meats and then went and got pizza for dinner. We stopped at Basin Feed on our way home to get a smoker for Ben that would not fit in the Yukon, so an additional fail. However, I did specifically ask Ben if it would fit and he said yes. It was about a half inch too big. The  Kade left from school and headed to trap shooting state. His parents went separately so they could watch the competition on Friday night. It went very late. Jaxsen got to spend the weekend with his self-proclaimed favorite aunt. I doubt Stephanie reads this, his other aunt, to know I have announced I am his favorite. I am all my nieces and nephews favorite, since I am writing this I can definitely say that. Sometimes Candice reads this so she might have a response. Kaine and I got home and we went and did chores with Jaxsen and Marlo. Kaine and Jaxsen set up Kaine’s Gameboy in the camper, it might not be a Gameboy because I kept calling It the wrong thing??, they were going to sleep in the camper but Jaxsen came back in the house when Kaine fell asleep and tried to share the couch with Murtaugh. He said Murtaugh is not good at sharing.

Still no foals on Saturday, Toni thought for sure there would be one while she was gone. Mom and dad headed to Wenatchee to watch Kade and the Connell Team shoot. Dad has been going to a lot of his competitions, so has a lot of friends there. Ben, Anna, Kaine, Jaxsen and I got the cows in to work and sorted them. Then Kaine and Jaxsen washed their steers and heifers and Kaine finished slicking his heifers. Ben, Anna and I started working the cows. We got circle 4 done by the end of the day. Then Anna and Lane went on a date, and Lane picked up the smoker on the way down. Ben, Kaine, Jaxsen and I did chores.  Kade’s team got 5th at state, we are all very proud of him. They got home late and picked up Jaxsen and the dogs, 2 of their 3 dogs ended up at our house too. Mom made pies, as requested by the kids, so we had pie Saturday night as well.

Guess what, still no foals on Sunday. We got up to finish working cows. The boys went fishing in the morning with Keegan and then got back to help in the afternoon. The skidsteer was also used Sunday afternoon and destroy more Russian Olive Trees and piled them up. Toni, Jaxsen and I also caught Red Robin, we were going to put her in with Tank, but love little Smokin so much we wanted her by the house so she is in with Leroy. Leroy was happy to get another mare.

                It felt like this week just flew by. We are so busy, but aren’t we always? The kids are now done with “sports” for the rest of the school year and can focus on the main sport of showing cattle. With the weather being cold, it has been a slow start to spring, but things are starting to look and feel like spring has arrived. We are excited to show off the foals we have if anyone wants to come out and take the tour.

Twist had this showy buckskin colt on the first day of spring and Julian birthday. Juju’s sire, Witty, is a stallion out of Docs Peppy Anna, who is by Little Peppy Conger, an NCHA money earner of $9,184.08. He has his NCHA Certificate of Ability, 1993 NWCHA Reserve Champion Open Horse LTE over $25,000. Witty’s sire is Just Plain Starlight, a son of Tamalight and out of Wright on Sugarnic, winner of the Cascade Cutter’s Futurity. Witty has had some ranch riding and is a great all around stallion.  Juju’s dan, Twist, is by The Sheriff Dunit, a proven producer and performer, NRHA Earnings of over $3500, 2007 AQHA Hi Pt Sr Reining-8th, AQHA ROM Open and Amateur Reining, 51 AQHA Pts. He is sired by Hollywood Dun it. Her dam, Headin for Hollywood, is also a money winner and is by the great Great Red Pine (Great Pine x Nifty Jodieann x Nifty Bee), who was bred by Brenda Glassford, Galena, Ohio, earned $60,952 during a successful career during which he was shown by Larry Rose for Frank Caruso to third place at the 1991 Congress Futurity and fourth place at the 1991 NRHA Futurity. What an amazing week.

Monday was a day for the books. We woke up to snow and it was snowing hard, I guess a late April Fools Day joke?? Toni went and checked and Lura had a beautiful blue roan colt. Lura is a range mare, Toni attempted to get her into the barn, but she was anti. Luckily the colt was big, healthy, and was sucking, so at some point you have to weigh the stress of trying to get them in with leaving them alone. In this case, where Lura really didn’t want to come in, it made sense to leave her. The cows decided that they did not want to be out in the sagebrush anymore, and we do not want to have to feed them, so they continued to come home all day, they just have to cross a plowed field to come home. Toni and the kids fought with them most of the day before taking them home. Lane came to see Anna and got the spend the day running behind the cows. It had stopped snowing at that point, but they got to sort and document which cows and calves they had in the hail. Toni had Lane and Anna stand in the covered part of the barn while they sorted as Lane was a guest. Bull 134, who is in with the show heifers, somehow got out of the corral and went up to Gayles house in the middle of the night. Gayle thought it was Hayley’s bull, Hayley called Ben because it was not her bull, so Anna and Hayley got him in. Anna was leaving Wednesday morning to Reno, so trying to get packed. They finally got done and came down and we did chores. Throughout the day they had rain, snow, hail, lightening. We got chores done and went out to check. We went to hook up Butte to the red trailer, since dad was going to Inchelium and Daisy on Tuesday and the battery was dead. So we jump started Butte, unhooked the camper and hooked up the trailer. Here is hoping for a better day tomorrow.

Tuesday we just had frost in the morning, a big improvement. Dad headed North first thing after Anna loaded the bulls. A straggler cow, 813, was waiting at the house to be let into the pasture. Toni and Jaxsen went out to check and found Running Sparkles and her new blue roan colt by Gunner. I called to change our reservation to Reno to Wednesday instead of Tuesday as check in date and the guy I talked to changed it to be one day. So then I had to call back and they said they did not have any rooms. I said my reservation was literally just changed, so that room should still be available. What do they said about April, in like a lion and out like a lamb?? Toni, Kade and Kaine fixed a pole on Jackpot’s pen and a pole on King pen Tuesday night. And brought in enough poles to put up some hill fence. Toni wanted to get the hillside between the old mares and King replaced over spring break. That is her goal. Her and I have been putting in posts for awhile, slowly, so now it is just getting the poles up, some panels at the top, and packing the wire out. It doesn’t sound hard but it is time consuming. Anna packed to leave on Wednesday. She went and got a wool suit jacket from Toni as Reno is not known to be warm in April.

Wednesday morning bright and early Kat and Kady showed up to pick up Anna and head to Reno. Ben had a pot of coffee on and breakfast sandwiches made. On my way to work I saw that Shasta had foaled, so I texted. When Toni got down there she say Shasta and Zoie had both foaled. Zoie had a stunning filly with a big blaze and two blue eyes, so Toni got more pictures of that one than of Shasta’s. Both were really nice foals. After the kids worked on steers, Toni and the boys put up a couple more sections of wood fence on the hill and got the panels up. The boys actually thought it would be a good plan to wench the panels to the top of the hill and wasted quite a bit of time trying to make that work. The wench cable just wasn’t long enough, so everyone ended packing panels and wood poles up the hill anyway. They got all but the brace at the top done and taking down the old fence. Chores were still normal, doctoring the heifer, doctoring baby Blackie, and Double. Then feeding and checking.

Thursday I left bring and early for Reno, Anna and Kady started showing in the afternoon, so I had to get on the one flight out of Pasco in the AM. Toni and the boys planned to leave for the Pomeroy jackpot on Friday. So Toni called the boys to see when she should go down and watch them practice showing their steers. They were up working on their boat. She wanted to know which steer was named boat, but it was an actual boat. The boys went back to the barn and got their steers in show halters and did a mock round of showing. Toni said she wasn’t super happy, but they boys are big enough and tough enough that she wasn’t going to worry about it.  Toni and Jaxsen finished the fence, putting up the brace on the end; chopping and picking up all the barbed wire and getting it out. Then chores.

Friday was a busy day all around. In Reno we had the Jr Angus show and the PG&S. Anna and Electra were 4th in thier PG&S class and Kady had a division reserve champion with Spike. Toni, Kaine, Kade and the BB crew headed to Pomeroy for the Garfield County show.  They had a late start because Leslie had a tire issue. So the boys loaded their steers, then unloaded their steers. They did everything pretty much on their own. Took the pick-up and hooked it up, loaded everything, including the steers, then went and picked up Toni. Mom sent them with a bunch of baked goods and so did one of the neighbors. They got to Connell right when the BB crew was loading. So after a brief chat with grandma they were on their way. They had a good, uneventful trip and got to Pomeroy in good weather. All the steers unloaded great and acted like pros. Lots and lots of friends and some family were there. 75 steers were entered in the show, with many coming Saturday morning. Still lots of people on Friday. The crew visited and had dinner, then got ready for Saturday. At home Marlo and Jaxsen were in charge of horse chores. So a big thanks to Marlo for taking care of all of that.

Saturday was another busy day. In Reno we had the Open Angus show and we had a good time. Back in Pomeroy, for once the weather was actually good. No snow, no hail, no real rain. Most of the exhibitors showed up and the steers did great. Kaine and Kade, along with their cousins, all showed great. With 75 head entered, there were lots of spectators and people everywhere. The boys handled their steers really well and placed well.  While at the show, Toni received a text from Jaxsen with pictures of a pole down at the corral, her heifer out, and the caption, “We have a problem.” Luckily Mom and Jax got all the gates shut, so the heifer was locked in and Ben was able to come put everything back to what it should be. The show was done about 3, so after cleaning out and loading, they hit the road for home. Both boys napped while Toni drove. They planned for Toni to do chores while they washed their steers, but chores were done by Kick and Ben, so the boys went and washed steers and Toni went and doctored baby blackie and Double, grabbed Jax, and headed home. 

Happy Easter. We headed back from Reno. Mom and Dad had easter eggs hid in the backyard for the boys. The boys told Toni she couldn’t see the eggs so she couldn’t easter egg hunt so of course she did. She took Anna’s spot. She tied with Kade for the most eggs. After that Ben went and made dinner for the people staying home. No Easter foals. So that was disappointing. But a great Easter for everyone. Great food, good people. Uncle Skip showed up later in the day and spent the night. I got home around chore time and went down to help. Anna unloaded her heifer and started her chores. Ben had gotten the rim and tire fixed on my Colorado so I had that to drive again.

What an amazing week. Anna had a great trip to Reno. It was her first time there. We are so proud of all that she is doing and participating in. Anna has gone from being pretty introverted to pushing her boundaries to become the best version of her. The three boys really stepped up this week as well and took on extra responsibility to help keep things going on the ranch. All of these kids are hard working and dependable. Jaxsen may not love the ranch work, but he understands that we have a responsibility to take care of our livestock and be good stewards of our land. So all-in-all we had a great and productive spring break week!

It feels like a slow foaling year but I think every year feels slow when you are in a hurry to see what you get.

know everyone complains about losing an hr of sleep, but I would do it every day if it meant I had an extra hr of daylight when I got home from work. At school it was drive your tractor to school day, since none of us are taking the tractors in for the kids to drive, Kaine and Kade found friends they could ride with. Kaine rode with Maxx and Kade rode with Cyson. And Cyson’s mom Jarra sent us pictures. Thank you Jarra. Anna was in the golf cart in the front since she is the FFA president. Dad went to Tri Cities and picked up Anna’s glasses. Hank texted and set up the bull semen test day for Wednesday afternoon. It was rainy Monday night when we did chores and fed the mares.

Tuesday was a pretty normal day. Toni was trying to get to the FCC meeting, but needed to try to load Summer to get ready to leave.  She took the trailer down and took Libby out to the field to try and mother up to the heifer that is still out in the cattails with a hurt leg. Then she tried to load Summer, but the trailer floor in the red trailer is so slick.  So Summer tried, and progress was made, but no actual loading.  After everything, Toni gave up on the meeting.  We did have helpers checking the mares. Our boy Coffee let everyone pet him. Toni was still calling him Black Rifle, but the three kids we picked up on the road and I convinced her he should definitely be called Coffee. Their mom has a mobile coffee van, 509 Coffee if you need a coffee at your event, and she is magnificent.

Wednesday Shiney foaled and had a beautiful red dun colt, named KT Foreal Sage Shines. Anna calls him For Real, I call him Four, I think Toni said she was calling him Reals. He is a sweet boy like Coffee. Hank came out and semen tested bulls with Toni and Ben. Leo laid on the pickup dash in the sun. Jordan sent a pic of cappy and how much he likes him. Our good friend Joss came out and brought her mare, Gin, and traded her for Summer. So we got Summer loaded up. Then Joss drove around with us and looked at mares and of course, had to pet Coffee.

Thursday dad took old Red to Reardan and got a couple totes of feed. The men unloaded it with the White when he got home. Chores were pretty normal. We still have the Judge in and working on him, inclusive on trying to remove all of his winter hair. He was doing really well being alone in the working pen.

Friday was a hectic day. Kaine and Anna went to Pullman for a FFA Meats judging class all day, they were home late. Kade went to Moses Lake for an FFA competition, his team got second. Jaxsen had to go into school at normal time, but he was the only one, everyone else had to be there early. Dad and Steve went to Moxee to deliver a bull. Toni had court all day in Yakima. Marlo came out and helped with Kade with chores. Her and Toni worked with the Judge then I got there and we went out and checked the mares and foals and Marlo got to pet Coffee. So Coffee had three days in a row of getting petted by random people. And he loved it!

Saturday morning Kade had shooting. Ben and Anna rolled up fence and pulled out posts. I got the Angus cows out from with the Hereford cows. Toni went and took care of stuff at mom and dad’s so they could leave for Pendleton. Then Toni, the kids and I went to Connell for the birthday party, while the men continued to roll up fence. It was the Feb – May birthday party. The kids had a lot of fun. Then we got home and started moving horses around. We took The Judge’s blanket off and got pics and video of him, and pics of Wild and King 2. Toni and Kade rode out to see if they could find the heifer. Toni rode in her new saddle and Kade rode the new horse. I moved some horses around while they were gone. Rudy across the road, Shadie in with King. Toni and Kade got back and we put Blue and Bell in with Annie, Dally in with Tank, Lightening in with Jackpot. Then we did chores and checked the mares. Mom and Dad went to see Little Texas in Pendleton, so we took care of the dogs as well.

Sunday morning when Toni went down to do the dog chores, she saw that Lona was having issues foaling. So she called and Ben and I raced down and we helped her pull Lona foal. Then Toni and Ben went down to look at Double, he did something to his tongue we think. I took Sammy for a walk while they did this. Then we went home and sorted the bulls since we had someone coming to look at them. She bought M118. Then we started moving horses again while the men rolled up fence and the kids washed their steers and heifers. We put Mocha in with Leroy, so that we could have Coffee by the house.  We got all of the desert mares in and sorted and worked all the open mares and the mares with foals. We had a long Sunday. We got mares put out with all of the studs except Double and Dude. So we are officially started the 2023 breeding season.

It feels like a slow foaling year but I think every year feels slow when you are in a hurry to see what you get. So far we only have 1 filly and 4 colts, but that is good because we don’t normally keep colts so that keeps the squabbling on who to keep at a minimum.
