KT Dancing Bug Filly Sire: KT Gunners Sage Bug Dam: KT Major Shasta Dais Date Born: 3/21/24 Click here for more pictures Color: Possibly Red Roan Price: 4,500 Here is another impressive Sagebug filly, that is out of Shasta. Sagebug is out of Continental Lady Bug and is by KT Gunpowder N Lead, “Gunner.” Gunner is a roan dunskin son of Cue Bars Laddie, AQHA point earning and producing stallion. Gunner’s dam, Pistol, has been shown NFQHA, has been featured on rule book and in the NFQHA magazine. She is a great working ranch horse, rope horse, and the kids can ride her as well. Continental Lady Bug is a big boned Continental Cad daughter going back to Mr Blackburn on the bottom. Shasta’s dam, Totchie was a daughter of Poco Cisco Bueno, shown AQHA, and a Sonnys OO Buck and Codys Royal Dancer (AQHA point earner) granddaughter, as well as a granddaughter of Annies My Granny, an AQHA point producing mare, and a Docs Superstar Bar and Docs Adonis great granddaughter. She threw really big, growthy foals that had a good mind and were easy to break. Shasta’s sire, Zinks Major Kid, was shown at local show before we got him. He was a producer of cow horses and performance horses and his foals continue to live on in many arenas. He was a great stallion, with an award winning personality that he passed on to his foals. They have a lot of try and like to please. This is going to be a fancy filly that will excel in many arenas.
Monday was not as hot as it had been. I had an industry tour at work and we went to Ice Harbor Dam, Kennewick Irrigation District to see where they are going to put their reservoir and Lamb Weston. It was all pretty cool. The kids washed their animals and did ranch work. Kade has been riding as many horses as he can since he is home. He rode Honey on Monday. We also heard from our friend Roy that has a Gunner daughter that they are showing that his mare did great in her show over the weekend with Christy riding her. Super fun to have them showing their mare on their own. Dad is still harvesting. Toni and I attempted to get some good pictures of Blue Star Monday night, but there were wasps everywhere and I got stung about 8 times and I emptied two bottles of wasp spray on them. You have to love wood fences in this heat because all of the continuance fence and the gates are wasp habitat and those bad words can make a nest and be ready to attack in no time flat. We got some ok pictures.
On Tuesday morning Allie was coming out to ultrasound mares. It did not go great, but it went. To say we were disappointed would be an understatement but we try to look at the bright side. The studs were great to pull the mares out of their pens. We did have most of the outside mares bred, so they can go home. We had a mare go over the stantion, which is everyone’s nightmare, and yes she got caught. But with fast thinking we were able to get her out with no injuries. Then the kids cleaned the show supplies out of the back of my pick up, did their normal washing, tree chopping and riding. Kade convinced Jax to pull the TufKaf so roped a little. Once of the risers blew the hose off so Toni got that fixed. To be a rancher, you really have to be a jack of all trades. My conference at work did not start until the afternoon on Tuesday, so I got some work stuff done first. Toni had to go to the Franklin County planning meeting Tuesday night.
On Wednesday Sagebug’s pen came up to the house, I guess they decided they were out of feed. We were already talking about pulling him and moving the mares anyway, so the timing really worked out. They actually still had feed, but with the heat and no rain there was no point in waiting until the feed was all the way gone. Especially with some older mares in that pen. So Toni and Anna put Sagebug in his winter pen, which really upset him, and hauled the mares down to mom and dads house. All of the foals loaded like champs, so it went really well. They went slow and easy, so no wrecks, no injuries, and they got them moved in 2 loads. Because they were all captive, Toni pulled hair on the 2 out of that pen that we needed samples to send for testing. She was able to touch all of the foals before turning them out in the irrigated pasture. Toni and mom also fixed some poles down the driveway. I was still at the work conference.
On Thursday Toni and the kids ran the yearling colts to the house to get pictures, they could not do it in their pen because the panels were full of wasps. Anna and Kade helped the most. Anna also got some video for tiktok. Kade had some funny quotes so Anna is hoping to make a couple of videos. The colts all did pretty well getting their new pics. They are all really looking great. Kade got some new pics of Honey so he could work on selling her. Thursday was my last day at the work conference. Anna came up and got video and pictures of Honey too.
On Friday I caught up on some ranch book work. Toni called me and I went down to moms. Dad’s recliner had been broken for quite a bit and the repair guy showed up while mom and dad were gone. Mom says he wasn’t scheduled to come then. He declared the recliner a loss so Macys is sending out a new recliner. Still hot on Friday. A group of foals came into the corral to start eating grain so we got to get some good handling in. We then debated which ones we want to keep. Spoiler alert- it is all of them! I stayed with grandma Friday night.
On Saturday Toni and Jaxsen went to a good friend Karl Smiths funeral. He worked for grandpa when we were kids and we grew up with them. I loaded out some horses to leave on Saturday, they were outside mares getting bred. Kade and dad went to Mr Dansies to rope, Kade was really excited to go. Dad and Kade had a good time. Kade is working on being a healer. He took Electra. What was really cool is that Hadley Dansie was riding the colt they got from us out of Fancy by Leroy, so that was really cool. Anna went in to the Mike Meads Memorial jackpot show to help and take pictures. Kaine and I got the cows in that have bull calves and pulled blood on them for pregnancy testing. It was hot dirty work but doing the smaller field is going to make Sunday go a ton better.
On Sunday everyone came down and we pulled blood on all of the rest of the cows. The big field has all the cows with heifers and steers, the bred heifers, and Ben’s longhorns- which there are 3. This is significant because we have a strong dislike for the longhorns. Ben always has excuses for them. So the first one he got, Fred, is a steer and isn’t terrible. Then he got the two heifers, Wilma and Betty and they are loco and have way bigger horns than Fred. I was sorting everything with Kaine and Anna helping me, Kade ran the alley, Toni and Jax ran gates. As I was sorting the yellow and white long horn, when she ran by me she kicked me. And yes, she got me. Ben says- well she didn’t hook anybody. She is getting better. I have threatened her life. Overall pulling blood on the cows went well. We also sorted off the prospective show heifer calves, the three club steers, and Anna’s potential Evergreen entries. We also left a calf in that needs some extra groceries. Then we had to go sort out all the mothers to those calves. Again, hot dirty work. Whatever tan we obtained was really just dirt and it washed off in the shower. The horses all did good, the dogs did good. It was a really fun day. Toni and I also ran out to the desert and pulled hair on Playin and Alota to send in for disease panels. I think we have like 22 tests pending at this point? Some are for the same foal but I feel like quite a few of our foals are getting tested. Again, if you have an interest in something and want to see disease panel, just let us know.
The heat warning has been extended. So it is still in the 100s. Isidro texted some of the horses were out in circle 6, so Anna went down and fixed the fence. Kade was worn out from the heat and shows, so he slept, washed his heifers, went back to sleep, then did chores. Kaine washed his heifer, steers and pair and then chopped down trees since he needs to pay for the transmission in his pickup. I keep telling him he should get up earlier and do it early, but he has trouble getting himself out of bed. Lynn, the mini aussie, will try to sneak into his room in the morning so she can sleep in as well. The men unloaded the freezers from Skips on Monday and dumped the contents into the dumpster, since it was getting dumped on Tuesday. Hopefully to keep the smell down to some extent.
Dad started wheat harvest for the Roach/Moore family on Tuesday. The Simmental steer (the one that was supposed to go to Spokane in May) and an Angus steer were harvested Tuesday. We got another outside mare in to bred to MC. Kade rode Friday and Stormy. Jax went out and pulled the TufKaf for Kade to rope off of Stormy for a bit. The kids worked on their show animals. Toni stayed with grandma Tuesday night.
On Wednesday the air was smokey and heavy and a warm wind was blowing. Anna and mom ran to Moses Lake in the morning. Then Toni and mom went and picked Skip up and brought him back to mom and dads. The kids went to Debbie and Cecil’s house in the afternoon and brought Rudy and Pepper home and took two minis out instead. The little pasture is on a hill side so can only really keep two minis happy all summer. When we were doing chores, the lightening started so we hurried up and finished and got to the house. As I was leaving mom and dads there was a fire just south of their house, the local volunteer firefighters got it out quickly. We were watching it but it never got close to the ranch.
Thursday was a hectic day. I brought meat to work with me for a coworker, he always buys his meat from us. Anna told me that morning she had a cattle feeder’s dinner to go too, so she was going to pick me up at work. Toni ran her boys down to the dentist, they got lunch, then came home to catch horses. Chad was out to trim horses in the 100-degree heat. There was just a lot going on. Kade rode Joss, which was the first ride since we have been home. He put her into a bosal instead of riding her around with a halter. She did great and acted like she hadn’t had any time off. She is really great for a young horse. We were also supposed to ultrasound but it was just too hot.
Friday Toni and the kids went to the Benton Franklin Fairgrounds to set up for the jackpot. They got shakes at Burger Ranch on their way home and did not bring me one. However they were out of huckleberry so I did not really want one. Marlo came out and helped with chores, she had not been out in long time either with work. Toni only let Kade ride one horse Friday evening due to the heat, so it was Stormy.
On Saturday we loaded out at 4:30 am and headed into the jackpot in Kennewick. We had a great time, even thought it was hotter than hell, and everyone did great. However, I do not think it was hotter then last year. Kade won a buckle with Simmi (who Toni now calls Simba) and one with Queen. Anna won a knife and a jacket. Kaine won a show halter and a show stick (which was good because they did not remember show sticks and we were borrowing everyone’s show sticks). Natalie had grand champion overall steer and Anna was reserve. Kade was grand champion Sr showman, Anna was reserve, Kaine was 3rd and Aram was 4th. Kade had grand champion heifer and Kaine was reserve. Julian was grand champion intermediate showman, Natalie was reserve, Ady was 3rd and Jaxsen was 4th. Kade and Julian got to do round robin, where they did a great job representing the beef barn. When we left it was 105 in Pasco. We got home, did chores and I went to stay with grandma.
On Sunday mom and I went out and put mineral with the horses and cows and got lots of pics. It was 108 on Sunday so we did our bare essentials. Bare essentials with livestock means to check ALL water, make sure there is some shade, a sprinkler, something to relieve the heat, make sure everything is doing ok. Luckily most of that can be done from a vehicle. Bad news is Toni’s pu has no ac so she rolls with the windows down. Mine does so we take it most places. Kade rode his one horse about 8:30 that night and the cat went with him on his ride. The dogs refused. All in all it was a good end to the week.
This year we have had more requests than usual for disease panel testing. Our policy has been that if people want it, we will get it done if able. Luckily we have hair in already on a few and got 4 more samples ready to send in on Monday. We also have some color tests out to confirm or tell us what things really are. Sampling can be very expensive with the numbers we have but in today’s market many people want to see those tests. Lots of opinions about the disease panels and way too much bad info out on the internet. Information is always good as long as it is used correctly. If you have a foal that you are interested in and the only thing holding you back is a disease panel, let us know. We would love to see if there is something we can do to help make your decision easier.
Monday was a bit of a haze, I do not think I was fully awake. We unpacked our bags and coolers from the trailer. The boys caught and fed their animals, Anna washed all of hers. Kaine went and helped our dad with the pump. The pump ended up burning up, so the next step was calling the pump mechanic and getting the pump in to see if it could be rebuilt. One of the main factors with irrigation water is when something goes wrong, you get it fixed asap. There is no time to be without water ESPECIALLY with the “severe weather” (National Weather Service’s words not mine) we had starting while we were gone and we got home just in time to enjoy. It is always amusing when Mom says things like it is just 100 degrees, not too hot. No Mom it is 106, that is way too hot. We fed, moved water, etc. It was 76-83 degrees in Wisconsin while we were there. It is 100+ at home. I think I am ready to go back until it cools off.
On Tuesday it was still hot hot hot. We had some people out to look at colts on Tuesday afternoon, so Toni did most of the chores before I got home. Mike Niles came and put some Freon in our AC unit, so now the house is getting cool again. It seems like when it gets that hot, it is hard to get it to cool down. Kade rode in the late afternoon evening. He is pretty dedicated to making his horses into great rope horses. He only rode Stormy on Tuesday and she did great considering that she was off for the entire time we were gone. Amazingly Jax did not keep Kade’s horses legged up while we were gone.
We still had a heat warning on Wednesday. Dad went to St John to get the freezers that they had taken out of Skip’s house, since the disposal company did not pick them up after they said they would. They said they were too heavy. So dad got to the dump in Othello, and they also would not take them since they were not empty. So they are on the flatbed trailer still. Anna cleaned out the gooseneck trailer. Everyone lethargically worked on their show cattle because yes, we had another show to go to. Kade rode Stormy in the late part of the day again. We did chores, moved water, petted horses. I will say that moving water when the weather is this hot can actually be kind of dangerous. The metal on the sprinklers gets really got and you worry about getting burned when you touch it.
On Thursday dad and mom went to see Skip and then Dad went to Ritzville to deliver the last Angus bull, he has been sold for a while, but he was just delivered. Kaine went with him. The kids have been packing up to go to Colfax this weekend and washing and clipping. Bill Bailey came out on Thursday and Toni showed him our yearling colts and one weaning that we are pondering keeping. Kade convinced Jax to run the 4-wheeler with the TufKaf so he roped on Stormy then grabbed Electra. Electra has a chipped hoof so has had quite a while off and it showed when he rode her. She is a very pushy mare and likes to be the alpha. Once she remembered she isn’t, the ride and roping went really well. Both Stormy and Electra are sired by Double and you can see his stamp on them. We have multiple full and ½ siblings to Electra and have only managed to keep Stormy out of our Blackie mare. Thursday evening Dad also sprayed weeds. I am not sure the weather was cool enough, but it was the coolest day last week, so do what you gotta do.
On Friday we finished packing, got the two goosenecks hooked up to Toni and Kaine’s pickups and the fifth wheel hooked up to Butte, met up with Leslie and Tracies and headed to Colfax for the Sagebrush show. I still do not think I am awake. We took two pair of Angus cows and calves, two steers and 4 heifers. Leslies took 6 steers and 4 heifers plus Emmett and his steer. And then we also had Aram with his steer and heifer. I guess go big or go home. It was hot hot hot, so we rinsed everyone when we got there to cool them off. The two char heifers hadn’t been to a show before, but they came off the trailer really great. Kaine’s calf hadn’t either, but as long as he can be next to his mom he is fine in general. Ady also had a steer that was new to the game, and I hear he did pretty well. Traci had made street tacos per my request so we had a really nice dinner with the family. We all were pretty tired and hot so made an early night of it.
The show started on Saturday at 1 so we got to sleep in to 6. The steer show was Saturday and we only took two steers so we helped the Leslie, Tracis, Aram and Emmett. We had a great show, Natalie was grand champion steer and cousin Delanie was Reserve champion with a steer raised by cousin Cade Lyyski. All our kids made it back to the feeder steer class, Kade was grand champion overall, Delanie was reserve and Natalie was 4th in the feeder class. Kade had his Simmental steer and he was grand champion Simmental steer. Kade and Anna had really worked on fitting Sim (the Simmental steer) so he looked his best. He is one of Kade’s all-time favorite steers and has a personality similar to a dog. Kade takes him jogging and out for walks. Kade looks good showing Sim because he is big enough to walk the same speed as Kade. Jax had his good steer Gunz and they also did great. Gunz and Jax are a really great pair and Gunz is very patient with Jaxsen. After the show we sent Kaine and Kade to Colfax for ice and ice cream. The show fed us pizza and we had a showmanship talk. Us adults got to sit around and visit with friends. Our friend Kimmy came out for a visit and our good friends Terry and Erina brought their grandkids out to watch the show. We also got to see our good friend Sarah. Due to the heat, no one stayed long.
On Sunday all cattle were being shown, the steers were in for showmanship. Showmanship was first. All of the kids showed great. Savannah was reserve champion peewee major. Kade was 5th and Natalie 4th for intermediate, and Kaine 5th and Anna 1st for Sr. Next, we went into the heifer show. The younger char heifer won her class and Queen won her class, so both made it back to the championship round. We had grand champion pair with 006 and Haul and reserve champion with Sylvia and Oat. We had a car full of visitors/helpers for Sunday. Lane even got to come up and help Anna fit the char heifers. Thankfully we had him because I am sure we wouldn’t fit them correctly if we didn’t have a char expert on hand. All the cattle showed awesome. We are really proud of how hard the kids work and the effort they have put into their show cattle. Then we packed up, headed home and did chores. Again, it was crazy hot and a long weekend. I feel like the kids are just all exhausted from the back-to-back to back-to-back shows and heat.
Now that we are back from the big show, it is time to get serious about selling foals. We are also looking to expand our market and try new things, so if anyone has any ideas please let us know. Having our FB account get hacked last Dec has really hurt our business as we lost all of our FB followers and have had to start fresh. To go from 5000 friends on FB to 0 was a big hit, but we are rebuilding and trying to reshape our brand. Instead of looking at this as a negative we are trying to be positive as it allows us to rise from the ashes of social media. Anyone that can help share our new page and our for sale ads would be very appreciated.
I left for work early on Monday to meet a mobile detail service at work at 7 to get the pu cleaned up before our big trip. On my way I saw that Crystal foaled, Toni told me it was a colt. I texted her back again and she said it is still a colt. I said I am waiting for a different response. She said well, it is still a colt. So I guess Crystal had a colt. Dad named him Santana. Dad and Toni ran down and spent some time with uncle Skip who is dealing with some health issues. Kade worked on Joss and T Monday night. The men started irrigation circles and fixed circles. Kids fed and did chores. We got another outside mare in to breed to Cappy. Cappy is up to three outside mares which isn’t bad for a cute little chestnut stud.
Butte was in Pullman (Butte is my pickup) getting its oil changed on Tuesday to get ready to go to Wisconsin. Toni and dad went to see Skip again. Mom was making items for us to take to Jr Nationals. Kids have been busy packing and getting ready to go. Kade has been riding his keeper horses at home and roping and dragging tree limbs, which is always good experience for his horses. Toni stayed with grandma Tuesday night.
Our compressed hay for the trip was ready Wednesday, so Kaine and Kade went and picked it up. Dad went to St John for a funeral and meet with a Heidi to clean the house in St John. Mom went to stay with grandma. Toni went to see Skip Wednesday. Anna and Kaine went to Corrales and brought the miniature horses home. Mike Corrales didn’t know the minis were leaving so wanted the kids to bring something back to keep the mini jack company, so that was a funny call. The men were chasing water, it looked like they were fixing circle 4 when I got home. Mom calls herself NOT creative but embroidered some really cool hats for us to take to Wisconsin. We will be the envy of everyone! Mom also made Toni a Ride Sally Ride shirt.
The kid continued packing to go to Jr Nationals. Kade got all his horses ridden before we left. Toni rode “her” horse as well for a bit. Toni and I moved Crystal and Santana in with MC. Chad came out and trimmed the donkeys and some minis. Mom wanted her donkeys done and that was the main priority. Anna took Misty and Blue Devil back to Corrales. It was a long last day before we left. Toni also had a big hearing before the Court of Appeals that she has been prepping for. It feels like we are never ready but we are always ready, meaning we prepare and the cattle and kids are ready. The adults are probably not ready! During chores Ben called that one of the tires on the pu was leaking air. We were very thankful he saw that before we left and was able to get it fixed.
Friday morning early we hit the road the Madison, WI. We drove a little over half the first day and made it it Dickenson, ND. We stalled the heifers at a rodeo grounds, we had called ahead and reserved pens, but there was literally a rodeo going on. So that was interesting. We got some real side eye from people that couldn’t stall their horses because we had the show heifers taking up stalls. We had 6 head on the trip to WI. The first day is always big because it sets the tone of the trip. The other family from WA going, Kat and Kady Verjaska, also stayed the night there. We left the men folk, mom and dad and Jaxsen at home to take care of all the animals, circles, etc.
On Saturday we made it to Madison by around 6:30. You cannot get into the grounds until 6 pm so our timing was great. While we were checking in the heifers we noticed that the valve stem was leaking on the driver side back tire. It held out until we got everything unloaded and the trailer unhooked. Then Toni and Kaine changed the tire while we got a few things set up. The cattle unloaded great and we were at the end barn 3 bays from the end, which also correlated to being on top of the hill for tie-outs. We put the cattle in tie-outs, watered them, and the trailer got parked close enough that the kids could pack hay from the trailer. The weather was warm but not crazy hot like we had been told to expect. WI was experiencing cooler weather and lots of rain and flooding. There was a bar and grill on the way to the air BNB, so we stopped and ate there. We had cheese curds and hamburgers. On the way to WI we promised the boys we would eat lots of cheese curds. Jaxsen went to Kasen’s birthday party at home and got to hang out with grandma.
Great news is that we now have 2 drivers over 16 that can legally drive. Sunday morning we sent the kids over to get the cattle in the barn, fed, and washed while we slept in a bit. The kids got to sleep in the pu while we drove so they were way more rested than we were. Just so everyone knows this was a huge concession for Toni who doesn’t think the kids are old enough to do anything on their own. Luckily none of them were stolen, they didn’t wreck, didn’t get hurt, and it all went well. Maybe she will let them go somewhere without her at some point before they are 40, maybe. On Sunday we got everything set up and ready for the show. We got checked in and the boys both got super cool windbreakers from Select Sires for having heifers at the show out of Select Sire bulls. Always a fun thing to get a bonus item at check-in. We also got our 7th heifer Sunday night about 9:00 pm that we had bought and arrived from Michigan. She is a super cute little October heifer for Anna to show.
On Monday Maria brought Aram to hang out with us for a few days. The adults ran to Walmart for necessities which included 4th of July sunglasses, hairpieces, necklaces, and all kinds of fun stuff for the kids to wear. We also bought bread for sandwiches, chips, anything else that caught our eye. On our way to Walmart we dropped the pu off at Discount Tire to fix the leaky tire and check the others as that was the second tire to have a valve stem issue. When we went to pick the pu back up they had fixed three leaky stems, replaced the tire, and charged us ZERO. Big thank you to Discount Tire of Madison WI for being awesome. It made us feel a ton better to know the tires were fixed and we could hit the road as soon as the show was over. We had opening ceremonies, luckily Kat had ordered a few extra shirts so we had one for Aram. After opening ceremonies there was a dance that Kaine and Kade went to for a while with their SD fried Teagen. The rest of us led the heifers to tie outs and got ready for the night.
Tuesday it poured down rain. If we had soaped the heifers before we put them out they would have been washed. Kade competed in Team Fitting with Oregon, so he was pretty excited about that. The team had some great mentors that gave them advice like Justin Click and our boys Coulson and Dalton Chambers. The team used Kade’s heifer Queen so that was also fun. Because it was raining so hard the competition took extra long as they had to blow the heifers hair out before they could start to fit them. There were 44 teams I think. They did really well. Kat and I went and bought rain jackets to try to stay dry. Anna and Kady were Angus delegates so we also got to meet most of the kids running for green coat positions which is always fun. We tried to eat out near the capital building that night but couldn’t get parking so went to the bar.
Wednesday was our first show day and the first day we had McKenna to help us. She was originally flying in on Tuesday but due to weather didn’t get there until Wednesday. It was awesome to have her with us helping wrangle the children. Wednesday the kids showed bred and owned heifers. Kaine had two, Gabby and Johnny, Kade had Queen and Anna had Blondie. All of them did great, especially Gabby since she is a baby and this was her 2nd show. The weather had also gotten nicer so that was a huge help. We had a really fun upscale dinner. By Wednesday we also had Kacey and her dog. Kacey is a sister to Kady and daughter of Kat. We once again had cheese curds. We tried to have cheese curds at every place we ate. Leslie and Traci took the kids to the 4th of July rodeo at home, Jaxsen had a great time.
Happy 4th of July. We had the PGS show (Phenotype and Genotype) and then tail gate that night. At the PGS show Gabby, Queen and Blondie all made it back to the championship round in bred and owned PGS and Queen made it back to the championship round in the regular class as well. This was awesome for us to have that many in the championship round. They all did great. Anna had showmanship as well on the 4th. At Angus Jr Nationals you just get to show in showmanship once when you are a senior. Next year Jr nationals is in Tulsa and the following year in Lexington, so we have not decided if we are gong to those two, so she decided to do it while she had the right age of heifer. She did a great job. We are so proud of her for her composure and immense skill that was reflected in how she handled her heifer and the other heifer that she got to show for her round. There is truly nothing more rewarding than seeing a child that was as shy as Anna was when she started, become the showperson she is today. We know she did her absolute best and left everything she had out in that showring. It was raining again so the tail gate was moved inside. We had a lot of fun and way too much food. At home most of the family and Erina and Terry go to my house for a 4th of July bbq. We hear they all had a great time.
On Friday we started the owned heifer show, we only had one Friday, Hazel, our Seldom Rest heifer. She did great for her first time out. She is just a little green. In fact the only thing the Judges said was she is too green. But she did great in a big deep class and we are pretty excited about her future. Added to the fact that she is really sweet, eats great, doesn’t seem to stress too bad and is just fun overall. We started to pack up on Friday knowing we were leaving at the earliest opportunity on Saturday. We were hoping to be done showing on Friday so we could leave early Saturday, but this year they didn’t split the showring so things ran long, they ran late and there was no getting done on Friday. In fact we were like the 6th class on Saturday and the classes were not fast. Closing ceremonies were Friday night and we learned that Anna had won a $1800 scholarship! So that was really exciting. We also got to say goodbye to some of the friends we had made that week.
On Saturday Kade showed REM and Anna showed Devo, and Kady’s heifer Missy was also in that class. The April classes are pretty deep, but they all did a great job. Kade’s heifer was bought from PVF so they fit her for us. Funny thing when Toni was over talking to Alan and Theresa it turns out that Toni’s other niece is doing an internship in WA DC and so is Alan and Theresa’s daughter, so they exchanged the girl’s numbers hoping they can meet up while they are both in DC. We got all of our new goodies that we had bought packed up along with all the stuff we brought and our Hazel heifer and headed home. I had also bid on and won a couple of baskets in the fundraising auction so we had some extra treats on the way home. We made it to Murdo, SD on the first night which was about 9 hours of travel after the showing.
On Sunday we spent a lot of time in the pickup, but we made it home by 9:30. Long day. Long trip. Lots of fun, lots of friends made and old friends seen. We had a great week being stalled near Kentucky and made some wonderful friends. We also got to see our CA and OR friends who were stalled near us, and the boys good friend Teagan hung out with them almost all week. The Jr. Nationals week is always a whirlwind of competitions, break-outs, showing, and taking care of the heifers. It is absolutely one of the best weeks of the summer to be with the kids, watching them build a strong foundation in the Angus industry and knowing that nothing can replace this time we get to spend with them. These kids grow up so fast and these memories are priceless.
