Midnight Cat Dr

We are excited to introduce our new stallion, we are changing his name to Midnight Cat Dr. Toni and I have wanted a Starlight Midnight son for a long time and we finally have one.

We are really excited to get this stud from the Davis Ranch in Logan, Utah. He is by Starlight Midnight, who is a 2002 Black stallion and a NRHA money-earner, he qualified for the 2007 AQHA World Show in Jr. Heeling. Starlight Midnight earned over 60 AQHA points and has earned his AQHA Register of Merit. Starlight Midnight is by the legendary sire Grays Starlight. Offspring of Grays Starlight have won over 10 million dollars. His offspring have made him one of the Leading Sires in the NRHA, NRCHA and NCHA. In 2007 Grays Starlight was the Leading Sire of Broodmares sold in both NRHA and NRCHA sales and the second leading sire of broodmares sold in NCHA sales. Midnight Cat’s dam is Slick as a Cat DR who is by Magneticat. Magneticat is a gorgeous red roan with a lot of bone and size. Magneticat has a fantastic mind and he can move around on a cow. He is a big stopper with great quickness. Magneticat has earnings with a limited show career. He is sired by Metallic Cat who is the hottest stallion in the cutting horse business. Slick as a Cat Dr’s dam is by Smooth as a Cat.

Midnight Cat DR was started by Clint Davis and is a great colt with a promising future. We are excited to add him to our breeding program as he embodies temperament, breeding, structure, and color. The biggest bonus of this stud is that we don’t have anything directly related, so can breed him to any of our broodmares. His pedigree isn’t something new, we have quite a few Gray’s Starlight bred horses, but his pedigree is enough different that he is very usable for us. He is quiet enough that he is a joy to be around. We love watching him move as he really extends, bends, is as quick as his pedigree implies. He also has a soft eye, loves everyone, meets his rider at the gate and couldn’t be more pleasant to be around. For us having the entire package is a must. Not only does a horse have to be usable, but they also must be presentable. One of our favorite things to do is give tours of the ranch, so all stallions have to be personable.

Down to the last weeks of the year

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  Monday morning bright and early Toni and dad ran Jackpot in to Othello to get Coggins and brand checked. We are waiting on a check from TX, but he might be headed South. Ben texted pics of new calves that were born, Monday was the due date for the AI cows, they have already started, but Monday was the official day. Dad made an appt for the red trailer to get rhino lined, it gets a little slick in there when it is wet. Toni started working on the next two foals, For and Ghost, in the mud. She said it was not pleasant.

On Tuesday Ben opened a box because it had his name on it, it was from our friends Terry and Erina, and had some really cool mugs in it with our brand. A handful more calves on Tuesday, one of which being a clubby heifer out of Foxy with lots of chrome, this is our second clubby, but the first one is solid black. Our neighbor Cicely came over with baked goods and to see the horses. The yearling fillies really liked the kids and were sad they did not stay. Toni hooked Ghost up to Tulip, Tulip was not thrilled. The money for Jackpot came in the mail on Tuesday, so we pulled the trigger and wired the money to Davis Ranch on the grullo stud.Β

Wednesday morning Ben and dad took the trailer in to get rhino lined after Ben checked the cows. Only 1 calf so far on Wednesday. Toni hooked For up to Tulip on Wednesday, it was muddy and neither were impressed.

On Thursday morning Mr Dansie’s parents, Charlie and Carol, came out and look at the long yearling colts, and took all 4 plus the filly Joss. They also took Jojo and PBJ home with them for their grandson Willy to break. Jojo is pretty started, but PBJ is just lightly started. We had two new Hereford calves and two Angus calves on Thursday. Mom and I went in and got our hair done. Ben was buiding hot fence around the corn field, so I got home and went out and helped him, them we tagged some calves. Toni and I worked on For and Ghost, Toni had tuned Tulip out since it was so muddy.

Dad and Ben went and picked the trailer up on Friday, it looks really good. We had two calves on Friday. Ben and I finished the fence and turned the cows over to the new section, they were pretty happy. Marlo came and all three of us worked on For and Ghost in the mud.

Tall John stopped by on Saturday, and helped Toni worm the long yearling fillies and they worked on Ghost and For. Then Toni, John and I hauled Cappy and his mares down to mom and dads house, in preparing of our new stallion coming Christmas Eve/Day. McCall and Mckenna stopped by on Saturday, McKenna was up for the weekend. Anna took them out to see Foxxy’s calf, Tweety, and 006’s calf. McKenna talked to Baby Cow to see if she wanted to show cow/calf, Baby Cow ignored her. I stayed with grandma Saturday night.

Merry Christmas Eve. No new calves on Christmas Eve. We checked, did chores, turned Ghost and For out. Then went to BB for the Christmas Eve party. We do white elephant and had a great time. Midnight Cat DR showed up at 11:19 that night and Toni and I met them in Connell, we were really excited to get him home. Β

It is insane to think that we are looking at the end of 2023. How has the year gone by this fast? I guess time doesn’t slow down when we are having fun.

On Monday Ben was home to check cows with Anna and then he tagged calves. Which was good because we had been moving things out of the bedroom all weekend and did not get any of the calves out in the circle tagged. He texted he was out of tags. The kids and Ben did chores. Toni and her family went to Vegas for the NFR. I hear they had a good Monday. They went to South Point and watched roping, which Kade was really excited about.

Happy 16th birthday Kaine. Toni got him a gift card to Applebees for Date night, since he hates the song Fancy Like. Mom reported that when he opened it Kaine said, β€œthey think they are funny don’t they??” Yes, why yes we do. Ben and I got him a leveler kit for his pickup, that did not work on his pickup, so he is now going to sell it on marketplace. Him, Kade and their friend Cyson worked on it for a few days before it was determined it would not work. Dan was out working on my floors again, he is almost done with this winter project, just one more day left. Kaine helped me move some things back to the bedroom while Anna and Ben made chicken fried steak and onion rings. Kaine had two of his cows calve on his birthday, both bull calves.Β  Toni and family went to the rodeo and had a great time. Toni always likes to say that NFR is the superbowl of rodeos. Her and Kade also went to Cowboy Christmas as the convention center and had a great time.

On Wednesday Ben worked on the mixer for the shower, I guess it mixes the hot and cold water?? It was leaking behind the shower. Dan was out to finish the floors. Dad took Red into commercial tire to get β€œnew shoes” as dad put it and the oil changed. We are having lots of calves every day, the AI cows are calving and the ones bred to the bulls.Β  Toni and family came home from Vegas. They were there by chore time. The dogs all missed them a bunch.

Thursday was Jaxsen’s last basketball game, the boys played well but they had a trick ball that would not go in the basket. Jaxsen played really well, especially since he hadn’t been to practice since the week before. He was disappointed they didn’t’ win but overall they had a great season and we are proud of him for getting out there and playing. Cammie got herself stuck in a circle track on Thursday, so Toni, Kade and dad got her out. Then she walked into the corral and waited for Toni to give her grain. We feel pretty confident that she will be fine. When she was wedged in we were all a bit worried, but someone she came out of it fine.Β  Kaine went and got a haircut on Thursday. Now Kade and Kaine both have mullets. We have told them that a mullet is not cool. They disagree. Toni also got Capone and Baby Blackie in so we could get them worked on a few times before they left on Saturday. They are both pretty easy to catch and deal with, the mud was the biggest factor. The boys put a bale of straw in the round pen and it barely dented the mud collection. It did give the foals a nice, warm, dry spot, but it was still not ideal.

The sun was out on Friday. Toni, Marlo and the kids did chores, I went and stayed with grandma. Toni and Marlo got Baby Blackie and Capone in, worked on them and practiced loading them to leave on Saturday morning.Β  Baby Blackie had never been loaded before, but really did quite well. Capone was a typical Gunner colt and would throw himself into the trailer. Everything he does, he does whole heartedly. Both were great. Baby Blackie has always been a Marlo favorite so she really worked on her a bunch.

Foals loaded great on Saturday and headed to their new home in La Pine. We had a handful of new calves to tag on Saturday, and we cleaned out the heavy heifer pen and turned all those pairs out. Toni and Kade fixed the hot fence at their house. I brought the red trailer down on Saturday and Toni and I practiced loading Halo and Mouse and For practiced loading himself. Ben, Kaine and Kade put out grass bales with the horses. We had Kaine’s birthday party Saturday night, and Kendra and Lane both came to it. So we all got to meet Kendra. It was an exhausting day for Leo.

More babies on Sunday to tag. The ram was trying to distract cows while Ben was tagging and got chased around the pickup. The ram’s owners showed up on Sunday and finally picked him up. Trena and Kenny from Tonasket came on Sunday a little before noon and bought Mouse and Halo, Mouse is Trenas and Halo is Kennys. They also both loaded great. Ben and Anna got the steers and heifers in out of the alfalfa field to sort off and weigh the heavier ones for a buy looking for some show steers. They kept them in and are waiting to hear back. Toni and Kade had wormed most of the horses left out in the pasture when I got down there. Then we got For and Ghost in to halter break. Toni tells be we have to continue in the mud, the halter breaking fairy has not shown up and they are not doing it themselves. Added to the fact that the foals just keep growing and getting bigger, so not easier to halter break. We are down to 8 left to get done, so not terrible. I had taken Rosie back to my house to Tulip is going to have to get the last 8 done herself. Hopefully they aren’t going to be bad.

Rain, Rain and more Rain

Monday was rainy but fairly warm for December. Anna checked cows before school and 033 had calved. We did not put anyone new in the halter breaking pen due to the mud. Toni, mom and dad went to Jaxsen game Monday night, then mom and dad brough him home and Toni went and stayed with grandma.

Guess what, Tuesday was warm and rainy. We were glad we did not leave any foals in the halter breaking pen with all this rain, hopefully we will have grass out in the sagebrush this spring. We had our first AI calf, she is by Square B Atlantis. We also had another heifer calve.

More rain on Wednesday. Anna went apple judging, she was 5th overall at state. Jaxsen had a basketball games, yes, there is 3 a week if anyone is counting. He is really doing well. Dan my carpenter finished the bathroom floor on Wednesday, it looks great. Wednesday was Ben’s last day of work for 2023, he does not have to go back until January. We had a few more calves on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday Anna went and picked up two puppies from neighbor Larry, he has posted they were dumped and Toni and Anna decided they needed to go and get them. They were cute, we called them Bonnie and Clyde.

Thursday we actually saw some sun. It was amazing. Our Express cow had a cute PVF Marvel heifer on Thursday. Ben had a dentist appt so he brought a coffee to me at work. Bonnie and Clyde and fun running around with Ben most of the day. Jaxsen had another basketball game. He did great, made a basket or two.

On Friday I was home from work. Ben and I went out to check cows and Lottie was calving but she was fighting with the ram so not calving. We had a repeat buyer coming to look at bulls. So Ben got the bulls in and sorted them. Toni came down and help me get the cows in. We got Lottie sorted off and the calf pulled right before Scott got there. Scott and his dad came and looked and pulls and picked out three pretty nice ones. Ben and I lead Sonny and Waffles, the mini colts, up the hill and put them in with Stina and Spicy, two mini mares. Then we did chores. Toni found someone interested in the puppies and they came out and liked and took them both. Anna was happy they got to stay together.

Saturday we checked cow, with 8 dogs in the Colorado. Then we got in heavy heifers, turned out the ones that had calved, etc. Toni rode Gracie and ponied Glow. Kade rode his horses. I went and stayed with grandma.

Sunday was more of the same, checking cows, etc. We cleaned out the master bed room in our hose to get the floors redone on Tuesday. Β Β
