It is crazy to think we are already into the middle of August!

Monday the three older kids worked on their steers and then went over to Connell with McCall and McKenna to say good bye to them, and give Leslie and Jay a present with the twins for taking them to Nebraska. They then came home and did chores. I went to Othello for a working meeting and then back to Pasco.Β  We still have a mares on regumate, Cancan getting doctored, water to move, and lots of other fun fun projects. We are also getting Slugger tamed down to start halter breaking him so moved him to the corral so he can see humans.

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  Tuesday morning Mike Chubbs came out and butchered three heifers and a pig. Dad went to Allie’s to pick up Stinger. Toni texted and said Chad was bringing some wheat straw out today. Anna and Kaine caught Monica and Addy to start halter breaking, we are going to try to take Monica to Benton Franklin Fair.Β  Toni texted me that she wanted to turn out Dime and Shi, they have been in with the old mares, so she turned them out in the big pasture with the other yearling fillies. Once Stinger was unloaded the kids decided which one of them was getting a driving lesson pulling a trailer on the way back to my house, Kaine won that so he got to drive.Β  On the way they saw a cow in heat and the bull calves riding her. So Toni and the kids went out to get her in. They had her in and she jumped through the fence and in into a different pen. Then Anna said that they already had her in once, she pushed the gate open into the wash rack and jumped the wash rack fence and got out. Guess who gets to go on a trip to town?Β  Jaxsen was not impressed with the cow and talked about how dumb she is for quite a long time after that.

Wednesday the kids worked on their animals. Toni and Jaxsen got down to do chores when the other kids were already leaving, so Jaxsen did not go and work on his steers, it was getting hot, so I feel like he was ok with this.Β  Dime and Shi had gotten the round pen open so were back in with the old mares, I guess they don’t like being in the big pasture. I got there in time to help change water.

By Thursday Monica and Addy were so great the kids lead them to their pen and back without setting any panels. Jaxsen got stung in the eye lid while doing chores, so he went home with Toni. We got more wheat straw from Chad on Thursday and the Jon Mastre bailed our hay. The water pump went out in the stacker so it all did not get stacked. Murtaugh went with Ben on the tractor to work on a circle and then try to help with the stacker.

Friday Jaxsen was milking the wasp sting, and could not look up what school supplies he needed, or go work on his steers due to his eye. In the afternoon mom and the kids went over to Connell to see grandma. Marlo came to do chores, after chores Marlo went with the kids to work on steers. Jaxsen’s eye is still swollen.Β  Mom also got stung by the wasps in the arm. I guess the wasps are getting aggressive.

Saturday Leslie, Traci, Anna, Kaine, Kade, Ady, Julian, Natalie, Joe, Dad and I went to Jana Kollers to look at steers and heifers. We met Bill and Kayla there. So we spent the morning looking at 2022 show animals. Then Dad, Anna, Kaine, Kade and I left and went and had lunch at Lyon’s Ferry Mariana. Everyone else went and looked at Bill’s fall bulls. We got back to the house and Kade went home for a bit as Toni had some friends over with their little boy. Anna and Kaine washed their steers. Kaine went and helped Ben worked on the fence in the weaning pen. Anna and I went out and checked the cows and horses. Comet needed to come home, so Anna and I took her to mom and dads. She is getting old and somehow hurt herself and has a swollen shoulder.Β  Kade and Jaxsen came down and washed their steers. Then they went and helped move stuff around so we could wean on Saturday. Then we went down and did chores, and the kids worked on their two and three year olds.

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  Sunday morning we weaned the bull calves. We sorted off some cows to send to Toppenish, and so then we got the heifer calves in to sort some cows off that were in there to send. Terry and Erina came and picked up Livvy. Toni and I went out and caught Dolly and brought her to the house, she needs to go in to Sheena and get her travel papers so she can go to CA. We haltered Slugger, we are getting him ready to go to the Midwest. Toni got stung in the hand by a wasp while we were down at the corral. We also moved the yearling colts to the middle pen and King back into the back pen. Kicker and Jaxsen fixed fence between circles 5 and 6. The kids came down and did chores and then worked on their three year olds. Anna rode Jag out of the round pen with the saddle. We make them start the horses without a saddle, so this is the first good ride Anna had with Jag saddled. Toni and Anna even rode down the driveway then around to the back of the house. Jag did really good.

It is crazy to think we are already into the middle of August! We are beginning our last week of summer with the kids before we start the marathon fair season.Β  We are making our foal weaning schedule, shipping mares home, and getting ready to gear up for fall. Anyone with a foal purchased, please get in touch with us so we can get that foal weaning schedule complete. We do have some really fancy foals left for sale as well. We also have two Hereford steers, that are around 300 lbs for $400.

Anyone looking for beef? The kids will be selling their steers at Benton Franklin, CBJLS, and the Othello fairs with sales on Aug 28, Sept 11, and Sept 18. For those that don’t want to go in person, you can call in, have someone bid for you (we can help with that), or call the fair office for options. There are lots of hard working kids out there with animals for sale, so please support your local fairs as many of these kids depend on the funds they earn.

Monday everyone was exhausted from the long show weekend.

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  Monday everyone was exhausted from the long show weekend. Anna fell asleep in the barn in the chair, Toni found her when she got there to help catch and work on the Othello steers. The Othello steers are doing great, only Kaines and Jaxsens had not been worked on a lot, Kade has been showing his. Gunner’s pen was out again, so Toni and the kids got them back in and fixed the fence. It looks like the Express cow is the one that keeps breaking the fence, she tried to jump in with Gunner, but, she does not know that she can’t jump and lands on the fence. Toni was not pleased with her. The kids did chores, Toni and I doctored CanCan and moved the water. Brad and Ady went home on Monday, it was nice to have them for a week.

Tuesday it seemed more smoky and hazy, but, I don’t know if that was actually true. Anna and Kaine got circle 5 in and sorted out bad eyed cows. Ben doctored them when he got home. Anna, Kaine and Kade washed their steers and heifers. Toni was really busy Tuesday so did not take Jaxsen down to work on his steers. But, he did go down and take care of Dagger and help do night chores. The end gun on the circle would not shut off at mom and dads, so the alley was flooded and the kids had to go around. I am still going through pictures from last weekend, Coco and Whitney took 1847 with my camera of all the kids. I really appreciate Coco and Whitney taking pictures.

Wednesday Anna and Kaine got circle 4 in and sorted them for bad eyes. Kade came down and they caught the steers and washed them. Jaxsen’s steer, Anti-Venom, kicked Kade, so Jaxsen just wants to show Dagger and Big Boy Brad now, less risk and all. Anna and Kaine put together the new patio furniture and made the patio look nice. Toni and the boys sat on it so she could send me a snap. Toni and the kids had chores done when I got there, so we went home and did the steer chores.

Thursday was cloudy and called for rain and thunderstorms. Toni took pictures of the kids to upload to the Benton Franklin website for their buyers’ pictures.Β  Brita and Austin came out to look at their foal Ivy, one of the last two Colonel foals. They have a full sister to her as well. The kids worked on their steers and then went down and did chores before the elusive thunderstorm. Candice, James and the kids came up from SE Idaho for the weekend. But while we were waiting on them the bull calves went through the fence and started riding the heifer calves. So, we had to get them in and lock them up. We heard some thunder but did not see any rain.

Friday Ben stayed home with the kids and hung out with Candice, James and the kids. They were going to go down to the lake but it was too windy.Β  They are a card family, so while James napped, Ben, Candice, and the kids all played Candice and Ben’s favorite card games, like Phase 10. Toni, Marlo, Kade and Jaxsen did horse chores. Ben and the other kids did cow chores and Kicker checked the circles. I brought Costco home and dad ran into Connell and got tamales from Martha.Β  Martha has been selling tamales at the Connell Farmer’s Market and they are extremely good.

Saturday morning Toni, Kicker, Kade and Jaxsen went to Leavenworth for the weekend. Anna and Kaine washed their steers in the morning, then we all went down to the lake. We took the Slammer, the kids’ little boat, and Ben and Kaine rode around on it. And James, Candice, Cristy and Kaydence were on one paddle boat and Anna, Lydia, Aeliana and I were on the other. We went down to the dock and the kids jumped off and swam there. Then we paddled back to the other end and the kids swam some more. Then we went back and did chores.

Sunday James, Candice, Cristy, Kaydence, Lydia and Aeliana all headed home. Anna, Kaine and I went to Cecil and Debbies and got Apache and brought her home, she was being mean to Dreamer. Then we went and got Camas and brought her out to help. Next, we went and got Jackpot’s pen in and pulled Jackpot and got Piper and Slugger in to halter break Slugger. We moved Gunner’s pen into Jackpot’s pen, put Jackpot’s mares back out with the cows. Then Yutzy’s came and got Midnight, the appaloosa mare at the house getting bred, and she went home. Anna, Kaine and Camas finished up chores and Ben and I went to Sawyer Brown in Kennewick. Toni, Kicker, Kade and Jaxsen got home and Toni had a guy come out to look at horses.Β  Then Toni and her kids went and got Gunner’s pen back in and fixed fence.

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  It was awesome to be home for a weekend and actually get something accomplished. We are slowly starting to halter break foals that are at the house. We are also slowly trying to pull studs and get the breeding season over. We are gearing up for the AQHA Youth Program as well and talking out which 2 foals we will donate this year. We donate 2 every year and feel that it is a great program to support youth in the horse industry. Because it is a scholarship program, we recommend that kids going into their Junior or Senior year apply, just because they are older and have a better chance at getting a scholarship. For anyone that wants more info, we have posted about it on our website and the AQHA has information at aqha.com This is a great program for a kid that wants to get their own foal and take it from weaning all the way to ready to start. We are extremely pleased to be involved and invested in the future of AQHA through our AQHA youth.
