So, this is the last call, the last chance to see the kids show steers or buy some beef for 2021 from the kids.Β

Happy Labor Day. Monday we got Gunner’s pen in and pulled him and took the 3 pair home that needed to be weaned. We had some people show up to look at the two yearling fillies we have left, and they took Dime, now we are just down to Shi of the yearlings for sale. Dime was a hard one to sell because she is our last Sissy foal, but she needed lots of one-on-one work and we didn’t have time to give it. This is better for her and sometimes you just have to make those hard choices. Next we went to CBJLS to set up for the show in the coming week with the 4H group. We ran downtown and got a coffee or smoothie, I was the only one that got a coffee, when we got done. Then we went home and did chores.

Tuesday I took the camper to work with me to get worked on by the Mobile RV Dr. It is having slide issues. He could not fix it, mobily, since the whole slide has to come out. So I called Broadmoor and made an appointment for Oct 29th. We always go to Broadmoor because they are a big supporter of the community, donating money to the livestock shows and buying kids’ animals. They support us so we support them. Toni, Leslie, Traci, and the tiny girls worked on steers to get them ready for CBJLS and Othello. You know stuff is real when the adults are having to work on the kids’ steers. Leslie and Traci hauled them over to my house so their steers could have a β€œtrip” before their final trip to the fair. Toni worked on Big Boy Brad and Kaine’s steer. Anna’s steer for CBJLS is a bottle calf she raised so no one feels the need to work on him, which may be a mistake, we will see. Ben is back to harvesting, so 2:30 AM mornings. Kicker is also harvesting and checking spud sheds, so Toni and I did not know if they would be there for chores, but they were. So we went and fixed some fence after horse chores.

Wednesday was steer weigh in for CBJLS. Toni and Dad did chores way early. The weaned foals had somehow broken one of our big sprinklers into three separate parts, yet none of them were hurt at all.Β  Kaine and Kade had football practice, so Anna, Jaxsen and Toni loaded the steers and took them in and met the other two. The steers all weighed in great and were acting unremarkable, which is what we want. Leslie and Traci brought their steers in. The 4-H group had 16 steers at CBJLS. For the most part all of the steers were acting really great.Β  We had dinner with the 4H group after weigh in to discuss the week.Β  Our good friend Leonard joined us for dinner even though his daughter has moved to FFA. We must be entertainment or something.

On Thursday Toni and the kids got up early to go in and wash. I went to work for a board meeting. The kids had market classes on Thursday, they all did great. Natalie and Kaine made it back to the championship round, and Kaine was Reserve champion. All of the kids showed great. I went home and did chores. Dad went and picked up the older kids, and Leslie and Toni took the younger kids to the movies, it was part of the fair activities, so was free to the exhibitors. The movie theater was absolutely packed with kids. CBJLS has amazing community support making it very relaxed along with a great experience for the kids. We were pretty worried that the late night movie was going to make some people grouchy, but it was a movie Jaxsen really really really wanted to see and continues to talk about now that he has seen it. Toni and Leslie said it was good. There was action, humor, and of course the popcorn and candy made it worth it.Β  The movie was called Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

On Friday the kids had Fitting and Showing. They started with oldest to youngest, FFA then down to PeeWees. Anna was Reserve Champion Senior, Kaine was Grand Champion Intermediate, Kade was 3rd overall.Β  Natalie was Grand Champion Jr and Julian was Reserve Grand Champion Jr. All of the kids showed great. Then we had PeeWees, Kayla showed Kade’s steer, Hannibal Hays, and Savannah showed Jaxsen’s steer, Big Boy Brad. Then Big Boy Brad and Kaine’s steer, Ike, were used in adult showmanship, where Toni won and Wes was reserve. Toni wasn’t going to show but Wes and Jesse Fletcher were trash talking so she said she had to do it. It was a 60/40 split on entries so she won enough money to buy us Chinese food, clearly worth it.Β  Natalie and Kaine went around and learned how to show the other animals and Anna, Kade, Ady and Julian washed all of the steers. Big Boy Brad was also used to teach the kids from the other species how to show, so that AJ and Ike could rest.Β  Clearly the real winner here is Big Boy Brad, who may not have been the prettiest steer at the show, but clearly was kind and easy.

Friday night was the Round Robin, it was great, 3 out of the 4 winners were beef kids, George Dress (who is just an all-around good kid), Kaine and Natalie, we are proud of all of them. Our entertainment for Friday night was axe throwing. Toni, Traci, Manny, Natalie, Ady, Julian, Jaxsen Savannah and Kayla all participated after waiting in line for over an hour. They say it was pretty cool. Manny told us that for $12 we could all go to Pasco and throw axes without waiting in line in the cold, but that wouldn’t be free.Β

Saturday started with livestock judging, then the Connell parade down town, next the livestock sale, then we loaded out steers and finished with the banquet and dance. The sale was great, and thank you to all of our buyers. Koncrete Industries bought Kaine’s Reserve champion steer. Danz Farms (JJ and Judy Danz) bought Natalies, Bar None bought Adys, Grain Acres bought Julians, Corrales Ag (Erica Corrales) bought Kades, Broadmoor RV (thank you for being a repeat buyer) bought Annas, and Ed Poe (again, thank you for being a repeat buyer) bought Jaxsens. We got the livestock judging results were we learned that our boy Flaco (also known by his real name of Trinton) got a 297 out of 300 and was the overall winner. We were so excited and proud for him. Anna was no slouch with a 295 and winner of the FFA division.Β  All of the kids did great. Then we all hung out and waited to load the steers and then went and ate and the kids danced while we laughed the laugh of the overly tired. We all had a great time, getting to see some great friends that we only see at CBJLS.

Sunday we picked up the stuff from Connell and moved it to Othello and decorated there. It is our last terminal steer show, then we are back to jackpotting the 2022 show steers and heifers. We went out to eat at Checos after setting up and then went home to rest for a few minutes, do homework, starting cooking for Othello and work on the CBJLS pictures.

The kids are going to get a couple of days of school and football practice before we head to the Othello Fair for the rest of this coming week.Β  So, this is the last call, the last chance to see the kids show steers or buy some beef for 2021 from the kids.Β  We have some great steers headed to Othello with some great showmen doing their best to bring home the buckles.Β

School, Working calves, Cattle Showing and more, much, much more.

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  Back to the daily grind after fair week. Kade and Jaxsen started school Monday. Kaine and Anna got to rest a little and then caught the CBJLS and Othello steers to get them back onto their schedule. Anna found out she won a Nile Merit Heifer, she is very excited, we get to go to Stephenson, MT late October to pick her up. Thank you 3C Cattle Company for your donation. Anna and Kaine met Jaxsen and Kade at mom and dads at the bus stop for a picture. Then they did chores really early. Toni and I doctored Doll’s eye and moved water.Β  Then Toni had to take Kade to the doctor for some school stuff that should have been done before he started school. I guess time just got away from them.

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  Tuesday Anna and Kaine started school. Dad and Toni took the steers, Big Boy Brad and Ike to Connell to go on a trip.Β  Because they were going over, they also unloaded Leslie’s tack with Leslie and Joe. I hear Dad and Joe weren’t the best help unloading heavy tack. There was some grumbling about how Dad and Joe were too old to want to unload crap.Β  I don’t think Toni and Leslie cared.Β  Toni bought Dad a burger from the Burger Factory on the way home, so I am pretty sure Dad’s good spirits were restored.Β  Mom invented some new muffin recipe on Tuesday. She is really getting into making us breakfast stuff for the fairs.Β  We get to be her guinea pigs for the new recipes. It is a real hardship to taste three new muffins every day. Kade and Kaine started football practice. Anna and Jaxsen did chores, and Jaxsen wanted to know why Toni did not sign him up for Grid Kids so he could get out of chores too. We got Hottie’s feed and tried feeding that to her. This is our latest experiment to try and get Hottie’s sarcoid removed.Β  We are in consultation with our awesome vet, Sheena, along with the inventor of this great new product that is supposed to get rid of sarcoids. When we can release the info, we will. Anyway, Hottie is a no go on the feed, so we are going to try applesauce tomorrow.

Wednesday Toni has a deposition on Zoom, and she found out she is supposed to be going back to court in person.Β  She is the opposite of happy about having to go back to court. Jaxsen started Grid Kids Wednesday because he wants out of chores so badly, he is willing to play sports. Dad ended up helping Anna with chores and then took Jax to practice. Kaine and Kade had practice after school. When they got home they worked on their steers, Anna had already worked on hers. Toni and I doctored Doll’s eye and got Hottie to eat her medicine, with a cup cull of sugar (a spoon full was not enough for her). Ben and Kicker are still working on circles at night.

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  Thursday Kade and Jaxsen went in and got their physicals and Kaine went to practice, so now all the boys can really play sports. Anna started chores, and Kade and Jaxsen got home in time to help. Toni and I tried sugar and apple sauce to get Hottie to eat her medicine, she is still a no. So we put it in water and helped her take it.Β  Kicker and Ben were still working on circles. It is a never-ending chore.

Friday Toni had meetings, but she got to go and help dad load up mom’s embroidery machine to take in and get fixed. She will be without it for a week or so. Jaxsen did not have Grid Kids practice, so he got to help Anna do chores. However, Kaine and Kade still had Jr High Practice. Marlo went to Kansas and Oklahoma for her birthday, so we did not have our Friday chore helper.Β  We discovered Dale Brisby has a show on Netflix called β€œhow to be a cowboy.” Normally we don’t like those type of shows because they aren’t realistic or are dumb. This one had enough sarcasm and real stuff that it is actually decent. So if you want a laugh and have Netflix, it is worth watching.

Saturday the kids clipped their steers and heifers going to Connell and Othello. Toni ran to Othello and got the Othello fair tags for the 4-H group, we get to tag our own steers before we go this year. Toni, Ben and I got the bull calves in and worked and weighed them and then the show calves.Β  We banded a few of the calves that we had on our list to make steers and just hadn’t gotten around to it. Kicker was down knocking down the beaver dam and smoothing out some of our ranch roads. When we got done working calves Toni and I went out and got circle 5 in and hauled those mares home, except Rosie B who is dry, we left her down there. We took the mares from Toni’s and moved Tank into the back pasture. Next we hauled some of the other dry mares down with Rosie B and began our fall protocol, which is just a dose of Ivomec that says it tastes like apples on the box. The horses do not believe it.Β

Sunday Ben, Toni and I finished working the calves.Β  The calves were pretty sticky and didn’t want to go up the alley, so it took a little longer than we planned. Kendel came down and helped a bit. We also worked the bulls. It is always interesting to see how the horned bulls maneuver up the chute. I also get to listen to Toni talk about how we need to keep every single one of the heifers, or listen to her try to convince Ben to sell her the ones she really likes that are mine.Β  The kids finished clipping and then worked on their steers with show halters. Kicker continued with his projects and fixed the end gun on Dad’s circle. Ben, Kicker, Kaine and Kade built a new pen for Sagebug, Toni, Kendel, Anna and I got in Sagebug’s pen and pulled him out and hauled the mares and foals that are getting weaned home. Sagebug was not happy about being pulled. We weaned the 5 foals we had in to wean, getting to a total of 9 foals that we weaned. This is our first group.

I am not sure working calves all weekend after the fair then the start of school was the best plan, however it had to be done. We are all pretty tired. Next week we head to CBJLS where all four kids will have steers for sale, after which we head straight to Othello.Β  No rest of the wicked.

A great Teddy Roosevelt quote- β€œNothing in this world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty.”

We had a great week last week. We normally haul into Benton Franklin Fair in the morning, but this year it was a little different and everyone had times. So we did not leave until the afternoon. Toni was able to get some work done in the morning. Anna and Kaine washed their steers in the morning. We have a had a few sick calves, I got the ones that were still out in and doctored them before we left.Β  We hit the road and met up with the cousins for our short trip down to the BF Fair, we let uncle Joe take the lead as he had the longer trailer so needed to find the right path. There were lots of people, but the cattle all came off the trailer great.Β  This was Monica’s first show, she has only been halter broke 3 weeks and she was scared but solid.Β  We got the cattle settled in, steers weighed in and had tacos with the 4H group. The campers were still parked way out, so lots of walking.

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  Tuesday was market, Anna was showing FFA, and she showed first. Her and Cupid were Reserve Champion in market. This is Anna’s first year showing FFA and she did great. The coolest part is that Cupid is a calf she raised out of her cow, so a bred and owned calf. It is always awesome to win, but to win with a calf you raised out of your own cow is even cooler. Jaxsen and Kaine were in the light weight class, Jaxsen won his class and got to come back, Kaine was third. Jaxsen has been showing Dagger all summer but had never won a market class with him before so he was stoked. He promised Dagger a churo if he did well. Why Jaxsen would think his steer would want a churo is anyone’s guess. Kade and Ady also won their classes and got to come back. Ady was Reserve Champion 4H. All of the kids did a great job.

Wednesday was showmanship and then open cattle. FFA was first again, Anna was Grand Champion and got to go to the round robin. My boy Kelten was Reserve Champion Senior. Kaine made it back to the championship round in Intermediate, Kade’s steer, Clark, did not like the pigs and was next to them. So he did not do great in showmanship and was middle of the class.Β  Two members of our 4H group were Grand and Reserve in Showmanship for intermediate, Kassandra and Adrian.Β  Jaxsen, Natalie and another member of our 4H group, Emmet, all made it back to the championship round in Jrs. Natalie was grand and Emmet Reserve, all of the kids showed great.Β  As Jaxsen left the show ring, he commented on how great the 4-H club had done overall and how excited he was to be part of it. This is a really great comment coming from a kid that we had to drag to the showring at the beginning of the year.Β  His showing and attitude have improved 100% this year.Β  Ady and Julian also did a great job, their steers just were not working with them.

Then we had PeeWees and the kids all showed their heifers.Β  We also had some good friends bring their kids in to show as well, so we had a full pee wee class. We had a quick lunch break and then open cattle. Kasen’s heifer, Peanut Butter, was grand champion Hereford heifer. Anna’s heifer, Belle Star (or 6 like we all call her) was Grand Champion Angus heifer and overall heifer. Kade’s heifer Vixen was Grand Champion AOB heifer. Jay’s bull, who Toni wants to steal, was Grand Champion Hereford bull and Supreme Champion Bull.Β  Toni told Joe he looked bad and that Joe should just give the bull to her. We convinced her that Joe will probably just let her borrow him so she can stop trying to convince him his favorite bull isn’t any good. It wasn’t working anyway. (I have not gotten to the Open cattle pics yet, I am currently half way through the peewees).

Thursday we let the kids sleep in and the parents fed the steers, heifers and bulls. Then everyone came out and washed after breakfast. Then the kids went on rides, and Anna and Natalie went and learned how to show the other animals to get ready for the round robin. Thursday night was the round robin. Kaine was standing there in boots, and the horse department needed a person to stand in, so he got nominated. But, little did he know he was going to have to go around and show each animal with the horse people. So he got a participation ribbon. Delanie Shattuck, another Connell FFA member, won the FFA division, we were all happy for her.Β  Natalie and Anna were exceptional. They didn’t win but we couldn’t have been prouder of them if we tried. Per their tradition, Anna and Toni went and got dinner after round robin. On round robin right we eat chicken sandwiches because we usually have someone we are helping/cheering for, which neither of those two like very well. After the round robin, the kids all tried to go on rides with their bracelets one last time but the lines were so long that after waiting 40 minutes they didn’t get to go on any rides.Β  They did however, play lots and lots of laser tag because the set up was super cool. Kaine and Kade say that they are the best. Probably in their own minds they are.

Friday was the sale, the champions sell first, so in our group Anna and Ady. Burns Family Estates and Corwin Ford bought their steers, thank you to both. Then the pigs sell on one side and the sheep, steers and goats on the other, in that order. All of the kids’ steers sold great, it was a great sale with tremendous support from our wonderful community. Watts Construction bought Kade’s steer for the third year in a row, Mr. Watts says Kade raises tasty animals. We also found out this year that the Watts are related to some of our friends, it was a small world moment. Our good friends at Farmers Electric bought Kaines, Rhodes Heating and Air bought Jaxsens, Ray Poland and Sons bought Julians and Koncrete Construction bought Natalie’s. Thank you to all of the buyers and a big thank you to the community that came out and supported all of these kids. It was wonderful to be part of such a successful event. Even though numbers were down in animals, numbers were very high in price.

Saturday was another dead day. The kids played games, Anna’s friend Kassidy came down and her, Kassidy and Edie hung out. Traci sold Anna’s ride bracelet, since Anna did not want to go on rides, and let all of the other kids go on one more ride with it. The guys came down that night and we all went to the rodeo.Β  Per the norm, we saw great friends, met some interesting people, and had a great time at the rodeo.Β  Afterwards, the kids and I went to bed, and everyone else stayed up until about 3 to load steers.Β  It is always entertaining to load steers when everyone is lacking sleep. The steers loaded great and it was bittersweet to see them go.

Sunday, we got up at 6, packed up stuff, and went home and took a nap. We got back up in the afternoon and started working again. Even though Ben and Kicker were doing our chores, we needed to do a walk through on all of the horses, get pictures of specific ones, do our chores, and figure out how much we can get done in the one week we are home before the next two back-to-back fairs. BF Fair is a marathon fair and is so exhausting and hard on a person’s feet that it makes it hard to be enthusiastic about the next two.Β  A great Teddy Roosevelt quote- β€œNothing in this world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty.” But I don’t think he was talking about our feet!
