Another week of summer gone.

Monday was a lot cooler then it has been, it was great, except then the wind came up. Candice, James, Lydia and Aeli (they left Cristy Kay at home) came up to get Kaydence. They came though Montana so James could stop and Candice could look for rocks. Poor Mini, John’s mini mare, is not feeling well, so the kids got Rainy and her colt in, in case Rainy needed to foster another baby. Rainy is a sweet mare and the only one we thought might do it. Kade decided to jump on one of the unbroke minis and got bucked off, then he decided to ride one of his steers and got bucked off. It was just a bucked off kind of a day. Dad took Butte back up to Pullman for the new turbo, our turbo started going out on the way back from Filer and brought back the loaner minivan. Jeana came and got “Bay Mare,” so Toni led her down to the corral with a string, since that is her new thing. Toni fixed a pole and made a creep feeder for Monte, and made him go in it.  Monte is still not thriving. But getting stepped on in the first few days of life takes a long time to get over, if ever.  Jax started football camp on Monday and that added another element to otherwise already long days. He was so excited to play football and see his friends that we aren’t sure he actually played that well.

We waved goodbye to Candice, James, Kaydence, Lydia and Aeli Tuesday morning, then headed off to work. Anna and dad went to Bryans to pick up some more meat, if anyone needs some our freezer is getting full, check out our website and got-beef.net. On the way to get meat, somehow the keys got locked in the pick-up, but with a tool they were able to get the pickup unlocked and back on their way.  Dad took mom over to stay with grandma on Tuesday, and Coco and Shea went over before they left. We also had some more night of Shea before she left us. She has been so fun. She loves the dogs, cats, and horses. Isn’t as sure about the cattle. She absolutely loves to ride already. She has no fear and thinks it is great. We put her on Gracie and led her around for a while. She also ran around petting all of the younger horses who thought she was great.

On Wednesday Toni and Kade went for an evening ride on Stormy and Friday. Toni hauled Friday down to ride with Kade. She decided Gen was too tall for her. Sagebug’s pen is also out of feed, like Gunner’s pen, so they keep getting into the corn field, but they do not want to come in so they take off of the backside of the lake when they see you coming. The problem with having horses out of pretty rough country is it isn’t easy to get them in when you need to. Especially if they don’t want to come in. Jax had his third day of football camp and was starting to let his personality shine. Somehow he managed to get the whole team some extra push-ups, but boys his age think he is funny so it wasn’t a big deal.

Anna and Kade went to grocery outlet on Thursday to get the water Grocery Outlet in Pasco, WA  donated for Anna’s senior project. Kaine has been chopping down Russian Olive Trees so he did not go with them. Mom and Anna printed off posters for her clinic and mom and dad ran to Othello and got her poster board for posters. Kaine and I went to a work dinner Thursday night. Ben was working on circles so he could not go. Toni and Kade went for an evening ride again. Ben and Anna got Sagebugs pen locked in on Thursday.

Anna, Kaine and Kade went into the CBJLS fairgrounds on Friday to set up for the clinic, with Burl Booker. They also ran the mares from Sagebug’s pen to circle 5. Toni, Uncle Joe and I went to Hunters for Dave Dashiell’s funeral. It was very well attended. Dave will be missed. As with anytime we attend those functions, we got to see lots of friendly faces but it is always sad to have to see them at a funeral. The kids did chores since it was late when we got home, and we got them pizza. Toni had to be even later because Jax had his last day of football camp. Luckily her friends know her and Holly brought her an ice cream sandwich when she picked up Jax. Friday was long.

Saturday was the big day for Anna’s Sr Project, she had lots of help getting it together.  Added to our crew, Lane came in to help as well. Toni, Kaine, Jax and I hauled in Marvel the steer and Roxette the heifer for Anna to use as demo animals. There were kids from Ephrata, Tri-cities, and all over that came. Anna had our family in the steer barn, Mackenzie Shattuck and Mrs. Shattuck on sheep, and Hanah Muhlbier and Mr. Palmer on pigs. The clinic was full and lots of positive results. Mr. Danzie and Mrs. Danzie, along with Ben and Jara and Cade Scott got the meal together. We didn’t really go to the other species, but we had a great time in the steer barn, parents helping parents, kids helping kids. Jara took Toni’s camera to get some pictures of the other species since we did not leave the steer barn. It was a huge success, lots of people came and we think they learned a lot. Now we are trying to find a Sr to do it next year.  Hopefully Anna gets an A. She put in tons more time than required to make it as great as it was. She had lots and lots of support. Our local grocery store, Harvest Foods donated part of the meal, Grocery Outlet donated, Jara and Cade Scott, 509 Show Circuit, just to name a few. Added to all of the volunteers that donated time, which is really a precious commodity. Anna had lots of help, but the majority of the work fell on her shoulders and she squared those shoulders and did a great job. It was also a reminder that our fair season is around the corner. We had some pretty deep discussions with other adults about our concerns regarding fair support. We have been talking about putting together a Livestock Booster club for about a year now to help with kids that just don’t have the necessary support for their livestock project. With that, the North Franklin Livestock Booster was born and took shape on Saturday. Toni, Kameron Jenks, and Erica Corrales are the board members. Now they just need to get donations and put a list together of kids that potentially need assistance on sale day at the fairs. Toni has more work to do to make it official, but consider it done.

Sunday we did lots of ranch work that we are behind on. Fixed fence, Ben worked on circles, kids worked on steers. Kade practiced roping, Kaine worked on his pickup, Anna helped Toni and I fix fence. Toni and Anna videoed Anna and Gunnie for the AQHA Youth Program. There was an In-Hand trail pattern that Anna was required to do and she got to have the extra trail element of pain in the butt heifers in the way. The two angus heifers in that pen decided to make themselves part of the trail course. Gunnie didn’t care and hopefully AQHA sees the humor in it. At one point the heifers were eating the straw bale that was part of the course. And Kade and Toni went for another ride Sunday night. But Toni rode Gen.  Gen loves attention and isn’t happy to be left out of the loop, so Toni said she will ride him sometimes. We also worked on my two-year-old Cash. Cash is a really cool filly out of one of our Apache Blue Boy daughters and Brays Eye Full. So she has the performance bottom combined with the run top. When working on training, a person must be aware of the horse they are working with. Cash has more react than our other fillies so has taken some extra time. You want to push that comfort zone when training without crossing the line into blowing up your horse. Because we know Cash and understand the training game, we have taken it a bit slower with her and know that going at her pace will make her a better horse in the long run.  She is really coming along, just not as fast.

We are super excited with how well KT Jackpot City is doing with TD Performance Horses, call Dillion at 509-398-7272 for more information. After years of being used just as a stallion, Jackpot has gone right back to being ridden. Saddled picture is at TD Performance Horses. Thanks to his excellent mind, great foundational training, and of course, Ty Dekker, Jackpot will hopefully continue to excel. Here are some links to the new riding videos, including him running at the rodeo grounds: https://www.facebook.com/tylar.decker/videos/698230048602651

Foreal is a big fancy red dun colt out of KT Major Sunshine and by KT Gunners Sage Bug. Shiney is a fancy palomino mare out of Kathys Sonny Dee to, a Sonny Dee Bar Too mare, and by Zinks Major Kid. Anna picked Shiny to keep when she was just a toddler, since we still had her we must have wanted to keep her too. Shiny was featured on the cover of the AQHA Journal. We have shown her in-hand trail at the NFQHA show in Ellensburg. This is a great mare that the kids all love, she has a great disposition. KT Gunners Sage Bug is out of Continental Lady Bug and is by KT Gunpowder N Lead. Gunner is a roan dunskin son of Cue Bars Laddie, AQHA point earning and producing stallion. Gunner’s dam, Pistol, has been shown NFQHA, has been featured on rule book and in the NFQHA magazine. She is a great working ranch horse, rope horse, and the kids can ride her as well. Pistol’s sire, Gold Country Charro is a dunskin stallion that was shown in 1998 and 1999 in halter at local shows. Lady Bug is a big boned Continental Cad daughter going back to Mr Blackburn on the bottom. This is a colt that is already showing a lot of personality and is very sweet.

Really what we need to schedule is some down time. Too bad we can’t fit it in!

Monday everyone was tired form the long hot weekend. Of course, it was still hot at home too, so that didn’t help with any anticipated recovery. The kids worked on their steers and heifers for the show on Saturday. Toni had a lot of voicemails on her machine from while she was gone, so she was busy working and catching up. Dad was harvesting wheat in Kahlotus. Ben’s pickup broke down 2 miles from his work, so his coworker Pete picked him up and then he fixed it after work. It may be on its last leg though. Ben probably needs a newer one. Circle 8 had a flat time on Monday, so the men took it off so Ben could take it in Tuesday to get fixed. A pole was broken on Dude’s pen, so Toni and I took it off after chores and went and got a new pole to put up. Luckily for us Kade and Jaxsen showed up in time to help, we should have grabbed a few more poles. Toni also started receiving sale catalogs so she keeps sending me horses that she wants to buy, like we need anymore. I tell her how many we have. She tells me how old they are, it is the circle of ranching. We also went out to the circle and got pictures of Sting for a guy that wanted him, took pictures of some others, and tried not to get mauled. We have a bunch of spoiled brat babies.

On Tuesday Ben took the circle tire in to get fixed. The kids worked on their animals. Sagebug came back to my house, so Anna and Kaydence went down, fixed fence, and checked. Super puncher  had hurt his leg pretty bad so they brought the herd back to the house, sorted, and got him and Shasta sorted out. Toni came down, saw the bad leg, went and got the white trailer and had the boys help her load. The tire on the white trailer shredded on her way to mom and dads with the horses. Mom helped her move Super Puncher and Shasta in with Blue and they left him alone. It is one of those injuries that is hard to tell what happened. It was too hot to change the tire, so the trailer got unhooked and left in the driveway as a constant reminder that it had a bad tire, but still made the trip. It was hot, so Toni and I did not put up any fence after chores, but we did grab mom and go out and check Gunner’s pen, and try to catch Bay Mare for Goodwins. They were way out there where they had found some green grass, so too far to lead in. Kade came down and worked on Stormy.

On Wednesday the kids got circle 4 in, there were a few sick calves, we need to preg check the sale heifers and one of the bulls had gotten back out and was in there. So they sorted them and then worked on their show animals. I think Kaydence might be getting worn out. After chores I told Toni it was still too hot to fence. So we moved water and talked to mom. Then I went home and packed some stuff out to the camper and noticed that a bottle of spaghetti sauce had spilled and no one told me. I was thrilled. Kade rode Stormy and Toni rode Gen bareback in the heat. Stormy is really coming along and Toni likes to ride with Kade so a win-win.

On Thursday Dad was off from harvest, so he took his pickup in to get serviced and Toni went and picked him up. Then him and mom ran Suzie, the dog, in to Othello to get clipped and then Toni ran him back into Connell to pickup his pickup. Dad found a good deal on water troughs at the Grange, so we have 2 new water troughs to pickup.  The kids clipped and got ready to go. Then Toni went down to watch them practice showing. The kids are all taking different steers to the next show, Jax hasn’t been working on his big steer for very long so we all wanted to make sure he could handle him. Ben got propane for the camper and shavings. We got it hooked up and ready to go.

Friday, I took the camper to work with me, and then Luis came over and picked it up after he unhooked his, and him and Toni parked it. Toni and the kids headed to the fair ground around noon. Traci and the medium kids went over late morning to get started on the beds. When I got there everything was set up and ready to go. And I found out we had a 110 outlet to plug the camper in to, so no AC, we hooked it up to the generator for a while and at least got it so it was not hotter then outside. But it was a long hot night.

Saturday we showed after sheep were done, so around noon. The show was good, Ady made it back to the championship round in market. Anna, Natalie and Julian were on standby. Kaine and Kade showed some other kids steers on the championship round. Ady was in the top 5. They started with Sr Showmanship, Kaine was Grand, Anna was reserve, Pepper was third, Kade was fourth and Aram was fifth. In Intermediates, Ady was grand, Chloe was reserve, Julian was third and Jaxsen was fourth. Jax’s steer decide he had enough of showing in the championship round and really started throwing his weight around. Jax did a good job with it.  Kaydence showed very well for her second show. In Jrs Natalee was grand and Savannah won novice and got her first buckle. For the round robin Natalee was grand champion in Jrs, Kaine was reserve champion senior, and Tesa (who showed a pig not a steer) was grand champion intermediate. For the heifer show Kade had grand champion overall heifer with Roxette, his fall heifer, Natalee was reserve champion with her heifer. Then we packed up and headed home. Ben had done chores for us, Toni went down and moved water and Ben and I got the camper backed in and set up. We had Lane with us all weekend, and he was a huge help. It was a good show but way too hot. We saw lots of friends and even with the heat, there was a good turnout for the jackpot.  We also got Coco and Shea up from California, so we were all super excited about that. We haven’t seen little Shea in months and now she is walking and talking. She still has bright red hair.  We were so busy on Saturday that Toni forgot to bid online at the Billings sale so she was pretty irritated when she realized that. She can’t figure out how to see what the horses she wanted sold for, so that is also irritating her. She hopes they sold high.

On Sunday most of us slept in to some extent. Ben was out killing weeds in the horse pen. The kids washed their steers and heifers. Toni did billing in the morning to try to catch up. Toni and I went out to get Gunner’s pen in since they were out of grass. Kade came out and helped us. Kaydence rested some more in the afternoon, Anna started cleaning out the trailer. Jaxsen was helping Coco with Shea. Toni and I hauled Gunner, Bay Mare and Bunny down to the house. We moved Lily with the other yearlings. Gunner got the pen with the shed in it since he is the oldest stud down there. King and Gunner aren’t too happy to be in the corral and done breeding, but it is time. We hauled Flint the Watusi bull home and Friday to mom and dads for Toni to ride with Kade and Stormy.

This week was the last jackpot show for the 2023 show season, next we are on the fairs starting the 4th week in August. Anna has her senior project this coming weekend, a show clinic. The next jackpot the kids will go to one in November, but we call that the beginning of the 2024 show season. Anna, McCall, Ben and maybe McKenna will go the Nile in October as well. Anna took her baby heifer that she is selling in the Evergreen Sale and she was a trooper. We are excited for a couple weeks off from showing before the fairs start, but looking at the schedule there is no down time. We have tons of activities to fill the rest of the summer up. Really what we need to schedule is some down time. Too bad we can’t fit it in!

We came home to even hotter weather, and the market is getting hot too.

Monday I worked from home so I could rest some more. Toni also worked from home, but that is where her office is. The kids went to work on their cattle for the following weekend. Ben and Kicker had gotten Fatness in for Kaydence to show so her and Anna got her caught and washed to make sure she wanted to be back in the show string. The next pick was for her to show Reece’s heifer, who is only entered in Peewee so far. But, as long as Fatness got grain she was good to go. Monday was also the day that Jax had to get back into work mode. Not an easy thing when a kid does not want to show at all. After some pep talks he went to work on his steers in the afternoon.  The men got our hay baled while we were gone, and the stacking area by the corral is overflowing again. We have told the boys multiple times you can’t feed freshly baled hay to the horses, and thankfully they have listened. We also have Lily quarantined from her long trip home. She can see other horses and is getting treats from mom every day, so she is decently happy. I am sure she wants to go out with the other yearlings, but at least her best friends are horses now and not show heifers. We were all a bit worried when she seemed bonded to the heifers that she was having an identity crisis.  Kade got his horses caught and rode and roped a bit on Monday.

Tuesday back to work in person. I still think I am too tired. Toni had told her clients she would not be back until Tuesday, so even though some were calling her Monday, she was able to catch up. So Tuesday the calls picked back up. The kids started cleaning out the trailer and repacking. Also working on their steers and heifers to go to Sagebrush. Dad and Mom went to Spokane to a funeral on Tuesday. Kade went back to roping and riding. Hunter, who bought Lura’s colt last year, and his gf Miah, came by for a tour Tuesday night, so Toni went around with them checking the horses and looking at them all. Miah ropes so all three had a good time looking at everyone.

Wednesday Toni and dad took a steer to Mountain View Meats for Erina and Terry in CDA. On the way home they stopped at Ally’s and picked up Cammie and Cinder. Both are bred to Goodbye Blues, a running stallion standing at Ally’s. Cammie is confirmed in foal and Cinder was just bred. However, it is mid July, we are done. The kids switched the circles, circle 4 and 5, and sorted out the bad eyes to get doctored. Toni took Anna and Kade to a horse show at Saddle Club with their Double daughters, Gunnie and Stormy. Both fillies did awesome. Toni reminded us all that the last time she showed at the Saddle Club she also showed a Double daughter, Flecka, and was pregnant with Jaxsen. So the tradition of Double daughters at the Saddle Club continues on. Traci and the girls came over and watched and then they went back to Traci’s for ice cream. Kaine finished up the chores at our house. I asked Jaxsen where his mom went when I got there, I knew but was checking him. This is like 6:30, so she had been gone for a while, and he said I don’t know, wait, I think I might have found her, did she go to the horse show?? Do not depend on him to notice if you are stuck in the ditch. I asked him if my pickup was back, which it was and he was at my house when it showed up, and he said I do not think so.

On Thursday the kids cleaned out the trailer and packed it to go again. They clipped and got ready. Kaine and Kade put the hitch in for the 5th wheel and the men put the tv up, the old tv broke, we had to get a new tv for the camper. Of course that did not fit on the wall mount, so we had to get a new wall mount.  We don’t even watch the tv that much, but if you need it you need it. Everyone was still really tired from Jr. Nationals, but was resigned to going again.

On Friday I took the camper to work, then was headed to Colfax after. Toni, the kids and the BB Crew headed over earlier. Grandma is back home from the rehab facility, so everyone got to see her. She still needs help and is having to recover from a broken hip, but on the road to recovery. I had a bunch of water in my Costco cart, that the shopper said was sold out,  100 degree heat and no water…super impressive. So after our arguing through messages, he dropped my order, I got a new shopper, and guess what, EVERYTHING on my list was in stock. I have had Hugo before, he is great at picking out produce, etc. Then I loaded up and met them in Colfax. Thanks to the men, we left them behind to do chores again.  All the cattle unloaded really well. Kade and Kaine took their extra steers that had never been anywhere before, and they really didn’t like the little kids, but they were fine. The steers didn’t look the best, but I guess that is what happens when you leave a 14 year old and a 15 year old to manage their own cattle. They have been showing long enough now they should know what to do.

On Saturday we did not show until afternoon, so we slept in until 6 and then got everything washed. We had a great time visiting with everyone. Even Uncle Skip stopped by in the morning. The show went well, Ady, Anna and Kaine made it back to the championship round as standbys. Aram and Luis came with Aram’s steer, so we stalled him with ours. This is Aram’s first year showing and he did great. He improves tremendously every show.  Natalie and Aram both made it back to the Washington Cattle Feeders Class. Kaine and Kade made it through their classes with their steers.

On Sunday we started showmanship at 9, so we got up at 5. The kids all did great, Julian was 3rd overall in Jr, Kaine was 4th overall in intermediate and Anna was reserve champion in Sr. It was Kaydence’s first time showing ever and her and Fatness did great. Then we had the heifer class. Kasen made it back with his fall Hereford heifer, Kade’s heifer did pretty good for how green she is and coming back from Jr Nationals. Kaine and Kaydence were first in their classes so made it back and Anna was 2nd with Stormy so 2nd in her class. Then we packed up and headed home. It was a hot hot weekend.  We had lots of friends at the show and even more came to see us. The kids all did great helping the younger kids that were at the show for the first time. Most of the older kids were in the pee wee classes with kids helping them out. Overall it was a really good weekend.

We came home to even hotter weather, and the market is getting hot too. We have had lots of calls on the foals. For some reason people are just buying and not coming to see them. Totally fine with us, but we are always willing to give the tour when our schedules permit. Like always we are very pleased with the foals and think they are all great.

It was a long trip, but worth it. The kids made new friends, new experiences, showed their best, and had a good time. We got to spend quality time with them. Time in the pick-up where they can’t escape us. It was good to get home, but the trip was great.

On Friday June 30th Toni, Anna, Kaine, Kade and I headed for Grand Island, Nebraska for the 2023 Angus Jr Nationals show with 6 heifers. On day one we went across WA, Idaho and Montana. We stopped in Missoula and had lunch with Pete and Samee, who were headed to Gelbvieh Jr. Nationals with Samee’s niece and nephew’s steers.  We continued our trip, staying the night at Millers’ Horse Plaza in Laurel, Mt. On day two, July 1st, we headed down to Wyoming, and cut across South Dakota and then South to Nebraska. We had a great trip and saw a lot of country. We made it to Grand Island on the 1st in time to get our stuff unloaded and the heifers fed then over to our Air BnB.  Some of the highlights of the trip: 1) spending good quality time with Anna, Kaine, and Kade. We did play some travel games- like if you got stuck on a deserted island who is the one person you would want with you? Questions like that. We got some really great answers. At times we were all laughing so hard we were crying. 2) We saw lots of new areas and some really cool sights as we cut across South Dakota. Everyone but Toni wanted to pick up a stray dog in Montana and take it with us on our trip. She was the fun killer. 3) We have now been told that Kaine and Kade want a ranch in the mountains. We pointed out lots of snow fences, they weren’t phased by snow fences. Maybe one winter off butt deep snow will change that.

On Sunday we finished getting all set up got the heifers washed. Vjeraskas got there and we helped them get unloaded and then headed out to dinner and back to the air BnB. We had lots of our friends at the show. The Grand Island facility was a million times better than what we got the year before in Kansas City, MO. The boys and Anna all had friends that they had met in past years or at other shows. Kaine and Kade have a good friend Teegan from South Dakota that they met back up with. Toni and I have met lots of people and of course made it our mission to become friends with the parents stalled on either side of us. We had Mississippi on one side and Utah on the other. The Utah people are actually good friends with some of our friends, the Uznays. Small world. The Mississippi people were really talkative and we went back and forth to each other’s tack areas. The one Mississippi guy’s cattle liked our alfalfa hay better than the hay he brought so he got hay from us for the week.  The WA parents also got the stall decorations up, which was entertaining. Lots of opinions, but it all went up.  Our friend Kat had bought Toni a present- a t-shirt that said “purebred taste on a sale barn budget.” Super fitting and funny shirt.

Monday we washed and got the heifers ready again. The kids talked to Scott from Seldom Rest, he came over to see the heifers. The vendors were open so the boys went over and spent way too much money on shirts, jeans, ballcaps, and cologne. Toni about fell over at the bill, but boys clothes are expensive. Anna also got some stuff. We tried to find stuff for the people back home. The men are a pain in the butt to shop for. We had opening ceremonies and the tail gate. WA brought Apples and Cold Brew coffee again. We had a great time. Thayers, Vjeraskas, William and us poured coffee for people and kept the apples out. The kids ran around and to all of the states and tried their wares. Then we tore down, took the heifers out to the tie outs and went to bed.

On Tuesday our McKenna came and took pics of the Team Fitting. Kade, Kacey, Cora and Alyssa were our Team Fitting team. They did really good, we are proud of them. Toni went with Anna back to the house to get dressed for the delegate question and answer session, Anna and Kady were our voting delegates. And Happy 4th Everyone. Lots of fireworks and excitement in Grand Island. That is an area that really puts on a fireworks display. Because of thunder and lightening warnings, along with a tornado warning, the fireworks were less than they could have been but more than we are used to.

On Wednesday we started showing with Bred and Owned heifers. Anna had McKenna to help her fit Gamora and Kaine had his team of Kade and Teegan. Kade also flipped around and did Gamora’s front leg as well. Teegan also trimmed Kade’s hair a bit. Teegan is the boys’ good friend from South Dakota. At noon Kaine and Anna went over to get their Angus Foundation Scholarships for LEAD. Mayhem and Gamora were in the same class and both did really well. They were 5th and 6th in their class. McKenna left Wednesday when we got done showing to go to work.  She is working nights right now for KDOT. It was a three hour drive one way so we were really thankful she was willing to come see us. It was also colt on July 5 so Toni and Anna got sweatshirts from the vendors. Lots of people wearing sweatshirts on Wed. To add to the excitement, Toni had bought a yearling filly out of Kansas in an auction, so we went over to the main office and talked our way into renting a stall for the filly, named Lily, so she could be delivered to the fairgrounds then go home with us.  The gals at the office were pretty nice about it and let us rent a stall. Wed night we went to Italian dinner and Teegan and his parents were there along with our friends the Rylaardams. Teegan and his parents sat by us, which was the first time we had met his parents. They were great people. We had tried to feed Teegan a tamale at lunch on Wed and found out at dinner that none of them had ever had a tamale. So our mission for Thursday was to get the tamales cooked and make sure they got to try them.

On Thursday we had PGS classes, Kade showed Baby Cow in class 5, Teegan, Kaine and Kade fit her again. She danced around like a deer, but looked good in the show ring. Mayhem was 2nd in PGS Bred and Owned and Gamora was 3rd, they were 5th and 6th in regular PGS, but Mayhem made it back to the championship round, so we were really excited about that. Kady’s big heifer Spike won her PGS class, we really like Spike. Kacey showed cow and calf (Kady showed her calf) and they were 3rd in class, which was awesome. Teegan showed his steer, the boys went over to help him. He did a good job showing him. We had showmanship in the late afternoon, both Kacey and our good friend Sydney Rylaarsdam were in showmanship. They both did a great job showing. Sydney got an honorable mention, we are proud of both girls. Also on Thursday our new horse, Lily, showed up. She is a tall yearling filly.  Anna’s friend Kaydence also got a borgie puppy on Thursday, so Petey the borgie was also hanging out with us for the rest of the week and we were in charge of taking him home. We were full up when we headed to Nebraska but going to be much fuller going home.

McKenna came back to help fit on Friday. Kade was in class 5 with Roxette the fall heifer. The rain started coming down after we got them in the barn and it was pouring when they took her over to the open air barn to get fit. After a couple of large pop-up tents flew by in the rain and wind, Toni decided they were done in that barn.  So they came back. Roxette was a rockstar in the showring. Next was Baby Cow, who was still a deer, was sorted into the top 5 (which is AWESOME) but danced herself into 6th. Kade did a great job showing her. Next was Electra, who was also a shit show, more so than Baby Cow. Last came Nebula, who did great, we she was second place in the second tier. Or you could say 7th, which is also really good. After we got done showing the kids washed, Kady and Anna went and voted for delegates. We started packing up the trailer, and then the boys went to closing ceremonies. We were all tired when we got done and we had the gooseneck hooked up, so we ordered uber eats from Applebees for dinner. The kids had a great day of showing.

Saturday morning McKenna helped us pack up the house and then she headed home and we head to the Fairgrounds to feed and load out. Then we hit the road. Lily the horse was in the front compartment with the tack, the six heifers in the next two compartments. The three kids and Petey the borgie in the backseat. We jumped on I-80 and headed to Candice and James house in SE Idaho. We crossed ¾ of Nebraska, hit the corner of Colorado without going in, went across the bottom of Wyoming, looked at Utah and turned north without going in. Jake and Shannon let us keep the heifers and horse in the corral for the night. It was a long 12 hour trip, but pretty much uneventful. We got a tiny bit of rain after we got into Idaho. We saw some stunning country. The corner of Wyoming next to Idaho and right when you cross the border into Idaho is probably some of the prettiest there is. Again, looks like there is way too much snow in the winter, but in July it is pretty. We made a few stops during the drive, but mostly drove straight through. Mom had packed us enough baked goods that we had plenty to eat. Just had to stop to fuel up and bathroom.

Sunday morning we threw Kaydence in the back seat with the other kids and the puppy and headed north through Idaho, crossed into Oregon and got home before 3. The men and Jaxsen did chores again, we unloaded and got the horse settled and turned in for the night.  It was only about a 9 hour drive on Sunday. Again, pretty uneventful except lots of pretty scenery, mountains, plains, sand, etc. Most of our friends left Grant Island on Saturday and some had hail coming out of Cheyenne. Glad we missed that.

It was a long trip, but worth it. The kids made new friends, new experiences, showed their best, and had a good time. We got to spend quality time with them. Time in the pick-up where they can’t escape us. It was good to get home, but the trip was great.

Interesting Monday.

Interesting Monday. Toni was supposed to have to go to court in Ellensburg on Monday and did not have to go. So it was decided the boys needed a haircut before we left on Friday, she had been trying to get them into Tennelle but that had been falling through. So we called around and could not fine anyone to cut two long haired boys hair. Chad texted and said he could fit in a few more trims at the end of the day. Anna and the boys worked on their steers and heifers. Kaine went fishing for a bit with Keegan, and they got stuck, and Anna had to go and pulled them out. She was really impressed. Kade’s girlfriend Abby was out on Monday. While Chad was at the house we had a lightning storm roll up, and sit there, so they only got two trimmed and waited at hr, it was still pouring rain and we had lightening, so Chad rolled home. Anna was working on the Youth Development program paperwork when I got home.

On Tuesday the kid ran the heifers into Sheena to get their travel papers. After that Kade helped Jaxsen with his steers, and he actually led them, so Anna took a picture. Jaxsen says he leads them all the time. He leads Joker all the time, but I do not know about the Angus steers. I think Kade just leads them when he helps since it is faster than having Jaxsen lead them. If Kaine helps him Jaxsen is pretty much on his own, maybe some encouraging words, like don’t let go, I am not helping you catch him. Anna only helps him if he asks, but she makes him lead them. I think that is why Jaxsen normally asks Kade, so Kade will just do it. Whitney is putting grandma house back in order after the new flooring went in, I am sure it is more then just Whitney, but Whitney is the one that sends pics of the treasures she finds. She sent a really nice treasure of mom and a polled Hereford bull. Anna ran over to Egberts and grabbed some barn kittens, we are always looking for barn kittens. After chores Toni, Jaxsen and I put in two more posts on our newest fencing project. Jaxsen was really excited to get started on it.

On Wednesday Anna took the boys to get haircuts, Toni finally got them into a barber. So Anna ran them in and picked up the travel papers from Sheena. We were told the new haircuts were NOT to be posted. Toni and dad took Jackpot to Ellensburg, he is getting some more riding and then TD Performance Horses will market and sell him. They also picked up cotton seed hulls while we were there and ran across the street to Old Mill. Toni went through the clearance rack and bought the kids some pants for $25, a fur lined vest, hose clamps and more. Ben took the red pickup to work to pick up more feed for the kids on the way home to take on our trip. The men and three older kids started packing the trailer. Toni, Jaxsen and I put the last three posts up the hill, now when we get back from Nebraska we are ready to put up poles. We told Jaxsen he could start with out us, I do not think that is gong to happen.

On Thursday Toni and mom went and saw grandma. On the way home they stopped and Wilco and got black dye for the heifers, then I called Wilco and ordered more since they only had 2 in stock. The kids continued getting ready and packing for the trip.

On Friday Toni, Anna, Kaine, Kade and I headed for Nebraska. So Friday-Sunday will be with next week so all of the Nebraska trip is together. We left the men, Jaxsen, mom and dad home to hold down the fort and do chores.
