Last show of 2023 is in the books, we had a lot of fun. But never fear, still lots of work on the horizon for us.
The kids did not have school Monday for grade prep, so they finished getting ready for the Western Showcase Jackpot. Mom called Toni when she was on her walk to tell her that King 2 and gotten in with King 1, they are half-brothers, both out of Izzy. So Toni went down and her and mom got him out, mom went with Toni because she heard a kitten and wanted Toni to get the kitten out of the tree. The kitten was not tame and did not feel like it needed assistance. Later in the day Kade, Jaxsen and Toni got more videos of Kade roping off of Gen. So this is Gen’s 2nd time being roped off of. He did great. Kade also roped on Electra. Jax only agreed to pull the TufKaf for a brief time then got off the 4-wheeler and went in the house. I got home from work and we worked on Capone, Hammer, Oak and DJ. Capone we just worked on because we had someone wanting to know how tall he was. The donkeys led Hammer, Oak and DJ on Monday.
On Tuesday it was a bit colder, I was out in just a sweatshirt Monday night but Tuesday required a vest and stocking hat. The donkeys led the colts again on Tuesday, but we also led them. The colts did great. Anna and Ben started feeding the cows Tuesday night after work/school. The corn was not harvested yet and they are getting hungry out on the grass. Happy Halloween on Tuesday. I guess we are all too old for trick or treating, but at least Coco sent us pics of Shea and Morgan sent us pics of Tel. The kids still got bags of candy from our neighbor Roxanne which they love. She brings them each their own bag of candy and a treat bucket. Kade had his in the side-by-side with the bucket for his trash so he could eat his candy and do chores.
Happy November, and it feels like November. We turned Basil out and just kept in Tulip and Rosie, they led Hammer and DJ and then we led them all and Oak. Oak is super easy. We got our last two clubby steers Wednesday night, they are by Sweat Baby James. Toni started working on the foals before I got there because it is getting so dark, however, it is our last of spring forward so I at least got to work on them some. Next week in the hateful fall back time I will not get to work on them at all unless it is in a headlamp because Toni has court. With November starting, we needed to start figuring out what do to with Jackpot. He was being ridden by Ty Decker of TD Performance Horses. She did a great job on him. We originally had him trained as a cutter, but Ty took Jackpot and started running cans. Jackpot is so good minded that he took right to it. Ty hauled him around and we got some good video of him getting a feel for it. We have been so happy with how well Jackpot has gotten back into the riding game after being used just as a stud for the last several years. We are sad to market him, but we have kept fillies out of him and we need to bring a non-creme, not related stud into the program.
Toni went down and spent some time with Grandma who is still at the rehab place. I went over on Wed during lunch. Toni then took Grandma’s laundry to Cousin Traci so had some ice cream with Kayla, that was Toni’s lunch. The colts all got tied and worked on Thursday and then we turned them out in preparation for the weekend and being gone. We are getting Hammer back in Sunday when we get back, he needs a full week. The kids finished up getting everything loaded and ready to go. Looking forward to the last show.
Friday morning Mike came and harvested an Angus steer and an Angus grass fed heifer. I finished packing our stuff then headed to Moses Lake to help set up for the show. Toni, Anna, Kade and Jaxsen followed with the cattle. Kade had to go have his MRIA on his shoulder Friday morning before they could come to Moses Lake. Leslie and McCall were not far behind them with BB Cattle and then Traci, Natalie, Ady and Juju. The three heifers we took are all pro show calves as they just got back from the NILE a few weeks ago. The steers were all kind of newbies, but a couple of them had been to shows before we got them. All of our calves did really good. We had dinner at Rock Top then headed to our Air Bnb and BB headed to their hotel. Ben and Dad went to Yakima to watch Kaine play football. Connell won and is headed to state. Kaine played an awesome game. Spirits were high after the big win. They are playing Lyden Christian on November 10th in Blaine.
Saturday we got up early and spot washed, since there was no water pressure, the heifers and steers that were going to be in showmanship. Ben’s light I got him worked great in the wash rack. Dad brought Kaine up and Deb and Whitney brought Savannah up and Kicker showed up to watch the show. Dad ran the in gate to the show ring. Cordills brought their mini aussie puppies out to play. They were a lot of fun. I think that Leo would have liked it if we got one. Show was good. Anna’s baby heifer Blondie won her class and made it back to the championship round and Kade’s baby heifer Queen was second. They flip flopped from the Nile. Baby Cow was 4th in her class. All the kids showed great in showmanship. There were 305 entries at this show and the competition was deep. We got to see lots of friends, some family, and some other people too. Lots and lots of really high quality cattle. We went to the 509 BBQ that night for dinner, it was catered by Long horn. Anna was the Youth Breeder of the Year and she got a $500 scholarship from 509. The quarterly newsletter came out the next morning, and Kade is also featured in it as a spotlight member. And we bought an ad and it is also in there. Alyx did a great job putting our ad together.
On Saturday we had the dreaded fall back. Joe and Jay came up to the show. The steers all showed great, Anna’s was third in his class and Natalie had two 2nds, so were on standby for the championship round. Everyone else was middle of their class, but they all showed great. Then we loaded up and headed home. Ben had built the corn field fence in the part that had been harvested, so he had the cows turned out, so back off of the feed bill. They were all happy. Toni and I went down and got Hammer, Yo Chic and Mage in. Yo Chic and Mage are for our Youth Kid, Kane, to pick from. And DJ is going to our second youth kid, Camas. We are really excited Camas got into the program. We are looking forward to meeting Kane as well.
We always have a big sigh of relief when a successful show season comes to an end. It is bittersweet because the heifers are turned out to calve and become cows, so unless shown cow-calf they don’t get to come back in the barn. Baby Cow was a favorite, so we may see her on the show circuit again. Also bittersweet because we won’t see our show family for a few months. Most of the 2024 show calves are in and will stay in through the winter. The kids still have work to do, cattle to care for, we just don’t go to the shows for a few months while we do other important stuff. Next on the ranching cycle is finishing to ship the sold foals, start calving, get the cows bred back, start foaling, building corn field fence, feeding, draining horses, the show season is over for the winter because no one has time to show taking care of all the animals in the cold. Also during the winter there are lots of winter projects inclusive utilizing feed and putting up temporary fence. So never fear, still lots of work on the horizon for us.

Another whirlwind week of lots of adventures and all-around fun stuff.
Monday was a nice sunny day, and it seemed a shame that water was turning off. Toni had someone out to look at Rich, and he bought him and they looked at a bunch more stuff for him to tell his family and friends about. Rich loaded great. Rich has always been a favorite, he is the one that Toni called COG- her colt dog. Toni had court Monday afternoon, she has court pretty much all week. Anna is home, so she brought Kade home from school, Toni and dad had been switching off the week before. Anna was selected as one of the finalists for a Coca-Cola scholarship. Which is awesome, now we will see how she does. Kaine and Jaxsen had football practice. Monday was also the first day for Blaze and Dukey being halter broke. Bailey was on the beginning of week 2. We only needed 2 donkeys on Monday, so Basil got left out.
On Tuesday if felt like fall. It was rainy and cold. Toni went down and worked on the foals before Jaxsen’s football game since it was not raining at that moment. I just did a few chores, fed the old horses. Kade is on his final week of drivers ed, so testing. Ben took the three two year old bulls in to get semen and trich tested. Dad went to work for Todd mowing wheat stubble. Tuesday was Jaxsen’s last game, they played hard, it was a good game. Jaxsen really loves football and was sad to see it end. He tells us he is going to be a GOAT, everyone has to have goals. Blaze got hooked to Rosie but Dukey was already basically halter broke. He was born that way.
Wednesday was a half day and then parent teacher conferences in the afternoon. Toni then had to hurry home for court on webex. As she waited for the court she was notified the power was out at the courthouse so it was canceled. I had parent teacher conferences after work, so Toni worked on the colts. Duke is the best. Toni discovered the donkeys and Bailey Bug love treats. Which made them much much easier to catch. They had tying lessons and all did great.
On Thursday Toni had court in Spokane. Kade did chores and Anna was ready to help him work on the colts, but Toni made it home just in time to tell them she was going to do it. The three foals got to go outside of the corral into the driveway. Because it had rained, there was some mud and puddles that Toni took them through. They are all really really good foals. It is always fun to have foals in with different sires and compare, but for the most part the foals are all smart, willing, and able. Kaine had a football game in Royal City so dad and I went to that. It was COLD and Royal City didn’t play an honest game. We made it across the whole field in penalties once play. We might be 2nd in the league and they might be 1st, but we can at least be proud of our sportsmanship and how we played. The refs even sent Connell a letter on how great the coaches and kids were. It is on the Connell High School Facebook page if you want to read it. We are proud of Kaine and his team. The coaching staff has high expectations for these kids and the kids are stepping up, on and off the field.
On Friday Toni, mom, Anna, Lane, Kade and Jaxsen went to see grandma. With it being Grandma’s big 93rd birthday weekend, we were trying to break up all the celebrations and keep people with her for the bulk of the weekend. Kaine was still asleep when they left so Toni didn’t want to wake him since he is a growing boy and played a hard-hitting football game. When Kaine got up he ran to Othello to get pastries from Cow Path Bakery in Othello, cousins Linda and Patricia were coming for the weekend. When they got back from grandmas Jaxsen pulled the tufkaf around for Kade and Kade practiced roping. Marlo and Patricia helped Toni work on foals that night, they did it early since Toni had so much help. Marlo led Bailey and Patricia led our Dukie boy. All the foals did great with the “new” people. Then we went up to Meachams for dinner.
On Saturday we got Sugar in to halter break and load, she did really good. We had a communication failure and she was not on the schedule to leave but Cody and Kyra had driven a ways to get her so took her anyway. She did really great. Then we went to BB for a Halloween party. Then we came home and worked on the foals. Saturday night we had dinner at Meachams again and had Jaxsen and Ben’s birthday party. The kids also worked on their calves to get ready for the show next weekend.
Sunday morning Blaze and Bailey Bug left. Patricia needed to lead Duke some more before they left. Then we moved the heifers down to the alfalfa field since it froze, Patricia had fun doing that. She went out to see her horse Nellie. We got some new videos of Gen and the white steer we have for sale. Chad came out to reshoe Electra. Patricia and Toni went to see the Eagle nest. And we got our new halter breaking victims in. The kids worked on their calves all weekend, they have their Spokane steers in to get them ready and the calves that they plan to show all of 2024. Lots of calves in the barn getting the royal treatment. We actually accomplished quite a bit for a busy family fun weekend.
Another whirlwind week of lots of adventures and all-around fun stuff. We are making really good progress getting the foals weaned and halter broke. We weaned a few more, Ghost and Yo Chic, over the weekend and just have a few more to go. We are really excited about how this foal crop looks and acts. We do have some really good ones left that haven’t sold. One of our favorite questions is, why hasn’t this foal sold? We have realized over the years that sometimes our favorites just haven’t had their person come along yet. This is a truly wonderful group of foals.

Another busy week here, the NILE show, homecoming, weaning and halter breaking, trying to keep up with chores and feeding, shipping foals, what is next?
Bright and early Monday morning Anna, Ben and McCall headed to Billings Montana for the Nile Cattle Show. They got there and got checked in. Toni had court. Dad and Mom headed to Addy to get Dad’s new side by side, or new to him but used, from Gary and Ruth. Monday was the start of homecoming week at school and Kade participated in the homecoming events at the assembly. Toni and I hooked the three foals to the three donkeys Monday night, Basil got Capone, Rosie got Bailey and Tulip for Mercades. These are three pretty big foals. Capone is the size of a yearling already and the other 2 aren’t small. We are thankful for donkeys. Very thankful. Toni picked Kade up from school to do horse chores and then ran him back in for drivers ed. Kicker was fixing circles so Kaine ran up to do cow chores after he got home from practice.
On Tuesday we turned the circle off and dad drove his new side by side up to the pond and out into the circle. He had fun. At the Nile Anna showed Mini Herefords, the mini-Hereford bull she showed won his division and the heifer got 3rd in her class. She had fun. I saw on Facebook that Kade participated in the homecoming events again. Good job buddy and having good school spirit. Jaxsen had a game, they beat Othello, Jaxsen played great. Mercades did not need to get tied to the donkey on Tuesday, I led her all over one handed while we moved the colts around. Capone was tied to Basil again and Bailey to Rosie. Kade drove after school then had drivers ed. Kaine went up to help with cow chores after he got done with horse chores. Kaine forgot to let the kittens out on Tuesday and they were little devils when we got home.
On Wednesday Mom and Toni went to see grandma, she has moved over to the rehab. Morgan and Tel came to the Nile to watch Anna show Char and hang out with Ben, Anna and McCall. Tel preferred Ben but Morgan would not let him keep him. I did get a text congrats on the grandbaby, how old do you people think I am?? Anna had fun showing the char heifer on Wednesday. I think they were third in their class in the Jr Show, I think third in showmanship and middle of the class in open. They did great, she showed really well and looked really good. Kade’s PVF heifer came on Wednesday over to Connell, Joe and Kade evaluated her at great extent. Toni was given some mixed soft Australian licorice when she took Kade to get his heifer, so she was happy. Kade didn’t do the horse chores since he was picking up his heifer and then had drivers ed, so Kaine did horse chores and then went to help with cow chores. Jaxsen is still just doing water. We tied Bailey to Basil and Capone to Rosie on Wednesday and led Mercades. We then let Basil and Tulip out with the other foals and just left Rosie in for Thursday pulling. Rosie is by far the toughest of the lot, hardest to catch, but the toughest.
Great day at the Nile on Thursday. Anna showed a Gelbvieh heifer from Ledgerwood Gelbvieh, they won their class in the Jr Division and made it back. They were Grand Champion Sr Showman in showmanship. In the open division she was second in her class. Anna also got to show another heifer for Ledgerwood Gelbvieh and a bull, the bull was the Reserve Grand Champion overall bull. In the Angus division Anna’s bred and owned heifer won her division and her bull won his class. In showmanship Kale made it back to the championship round and Anna did really well. I went and had lunch with grandma, I shared a grilled cheese sandwich with her and she had soup. Thursday night Toni and I worked on the foals. Kade did not have drivers ed so he did most of the chores. The foals are really starting to make progress. Tulip wanted to be done. She is kind of turning into a quitter.
Friday Anna and McCall showed at the Nile and Kale Cordill showed his Nile Merit heifer. McCall had Queenie and Baby Cow and Anna showed Blondie and her bull. Queenie got 2nd in her class and Blondie was in the same class and 3rd. Baby Cow was 5th in a deep class. Kale and Berta were 3rd in their class. The bull won his division and got to come back to the championship round. Kale and Berta were 4th Overall in the Nile Merit Program and Reserve Champion in Showmanship. Marlo came and her and Kade did chores. I worked on the foals, Toni had court on Friday, but she got there as we were finishing up and took some pics of the foals. Mom, Marlo, Kade, Jaxsen and I met Dianne in at Kaine’s football game. Kade got to record the film for the team. It was Sr night and we got to see a lot of fiends be honored in Sr night. It was a great game and Connell won.
Happy birthday Jaxsen. On Saturday Kade went hunting and Kaine went with his friends to Tri Cities to play golf before homecoming. Toni and I loaded out Mercades on Saturday, she went home with Juan. Jaxsen wanted to invite friends over for his birthday, so Toni went around and gathered them up. Then Robby and Ed came with daughter Cheynne to get a clubby steer. Then I fixed fence with the dogs, cleaned some stuff up, fed the cows a few old 2 string bales that were left over from shows and hanging around the show shed. Kade got home and did chores early so I could take him down to meet the boys for homecoming. Toni and I took pics of Capone and then finished up chores, which included getting Blaze and Dukey in and haltered. We had to chase the pen around a bit, but we got them. Both were pretty easy to halter. Bailey gets another week. I then ran to Kennewick with Kade and took homecoming pics and dropped him off with the other kids and came home. The boys had a good time at Homecoming. Ben, McCall and Mckenna went to Morgans in Wyoming to pick up the steers at Morgans house. They look really good, we are really happy with them. Then they went to the Angus sale to bid on some heifers but did not get any. Which the trailer was pretty full so maybe for the best, even though we really liked some of Zane Barragree’s heifers in the sale and some of Lacey and Chads from 3C (they donated Anna’s Nile Merit Heifer from last year). McKena flew out of Billings that night home to Kansas. Toni took Jax’s friends home. A few wanted to stay the night but she said she couldn’t deal with it. Our friend Robby said that she read somewhere that raising boys is like raising a pack of squirrels. That seems accurate. 2 boys is ok, more than 2 and you wonder what type of hell life has become.
On Sunday McCall, Ben and Anna headed home with the trailer load, and one heifer of Kelly Cordills that they dropped off. Toni, Kaine and Kade went to Pomeroy to pick up the Spokane steers from Dixons. Both boys took a turn driving with the trailer, they really can’t get too much experience driving with a trailer before they are turned lose on society. Once in Pomeroy, they spent some time with John and Jerry looking through the weaned calves. John Dixon does have some calves left that would work for a fall show if anyone is looking. I worked around the place with the dogs. Everyone kind of got home around the same time. We had to move pens around a bit to get pens for all of the steers and critters we have accumulated. Toni and I worked on group 4, Bailey, Blaze and Duke. All three donkeys had to come back in for a bit. We also put out big bales in the White tractor. I guess that happened this week too, we have sold the White tractor so putting out bales Sunday may have been its last job for KT Ranch. We also got Cog caught, practiced loading him, and put him in a pen at the house for him to leave on Monday to his new home. I weaned Mouse when she came in for grain, so another foal weaned.
We are down to four long yearling colts and one filly. We think they are all pretty good ones and each has a unique trait that sets them apart. The Judge is a big gray colt out of John Hallowell’s PD stud- so Apache Blue Boy on the bottom and Dash for Cash on the top. This colt is made for performance. He is big, strong, smart, and pretty. King Two is a stout shorter colt, clearly made for breakaway, calf roping, healing. He is more reactive, but again, really smart. He is more of a project type, but is going to make a fantastic horse. King Three is a true-blue roan that carries a crème gene. He is EE, so can’t have a red foal. Again, super smart colt. Very fancy, has the right look. Joker is a joy to be around, has the pedigree, and ability. We had originally thought Joker would be our next stallion, but we are going to go a different route. Joker has that potential, or would make a great gelding. Joss is a buckskin filly. She was a later born filly, but is stout, smart, curious, and just a fun filly. She isn’t going to be huge, should mature 14.2 with lots of natural grace. These are all really great foals that we are ready to move before winter.
