Ranch Horse Monday: KT Watch Miss Zella

This buckskin filly is one of Toni’s picks to keep, so if you were hoping every filly would eventually land on the sale page, Toni would like a word.

KT Watch Miss Zella combines ranch horse breeding, an eye-catching color, and a family known for personality and trainability. It’s easy to see why she earned a spot on Toni’s keeper list!

Her sire, Dude, is a son of Zinks Major Kid, with Pana Dude, Major Bonanza, and Skipper W in his pedigree. Jordan Crabtree in Ferndale, Washington, started Dude and enjoyed riding him. Dude has been a great horse to be around, and his foals tend to have size, great personalities, and plenty of trainability. He brings the combination we appreciate: pedigree, personality, and conformation.

Zella’s dam, Twiggy, was a daughter of ID Watch, a red roan AQHA stallion who earned his ROM. Her pedigree also included Two Eyed Jack, Watch Joe Jack, Mr. Baron Red, and Do Jack—a strong foundation for a versatile ranch and performance prospect.

Twiggy was a visitor favorite who loved attention and passed that personable nature along to her foals. She consistently produced fancy prospects, and Zella gives us another reason to appreciate what she brought to our program.

Sunday Filly Spotlight: KT Smoken Hottie

Apparently, our idea of “keeping a few fillies” and the actual head count were two very different things. So, after some tough decisions, we’ve added a few more to the sale page—including KT Smoken Hottie!

This gorgeous chestnut filly has chrome, a pedigree packed with performance, and plenty of potential. She was on our keeper list for a reason, but even we have to draw the line somewhere. Apparently.

Smoken Hottie combines proven reining and cutting bloodlines with a practical ranch horse foundation, making her an exciting prospect for ranch riding, versatility ranch horse, cow horse events, or a future ranch and trail partner.

Her sire, Tank, is by KR Gun Powder and out of KT Cow Cuttin Hottie. KR Gun Powder is by Colonels Smoking Gun and out of A Bueno Poco Dunit. He earned the 2016 APHA Senior Reining World Champion title in just nine shows and accumulated nearly $13,000 in NRHA earnings.

Tank’s dam, KT Cow Cuttin Hottie, is by Cow Cuttin Colonel and out of KT Copper Comet. Cow Cuttin Colonel’s accomplishments include NRCHA Superior Cow Horse, AQHA Open and Amateur Performance ROMs, and a third-place finish at the 2006 NRCHA World Show in Non Pro Hackamore. That gives this filly some serious performance credentials in her family tree!

Her dam, Red Robin, is a daughter of Docs Gunsmoke, a Reserve World Champion in both Open and Amateur Cutting. He earned 130 APHA points, had lifetime earnings exceeding $51,000, and produced a World Champion. Docs Gunsmoke is by Mr Gunsmoke and out of a Docs Cowboy daughter. Red Robin’s dam, Regarding Robin, is by Whiskey River Run, an AQHA race performer with an 87 speed index.

Red Robin has also put her breeding to work as a ranch and trail horse. She’s a flashy mare with a great disposition, bringing practical experience to a cross already loaded with performance breeding.

This April filly is by KT Gunners Sage Bug and out of KT Major Sunshine, “Shiny.” Shiny is a family favorite with a kind, willing disposition. She’s also been featured on the cover of the AQHA Journal and shown in-hand trail at the NFQHA show in Ellensburg.

Ladybug brings together Sagebug’s foundation breeding and Shiny’s pedigree, which includes Zinks Major Kid, Sonny Dee Bar Too, Major Bonanza, Lads Image, and Blondys Dude. With her bone, substance, and versatile breeding, she’s a good prospect for ranch work, roping, or the arena.

We absolutely love this filly. In fact, we keep talking about keeping her—but our keep list is already far too long, and apparently, we cannot keep them all. Someone else had better buy her before we talk ourselves into making another exception!

KT Sages Uptown Girl is developing into a stout, correct and beautifully balanced filly. She has plenty of hip, strong bone, natural shape and the kind of presence that immediately catches your eye. Add in that gorgeous red dun roan color, and she is awfully hard to overlook.

Her dam, Franks Uptown Zoey, is a sweet, kind gray mare and an absolute pleasure to have around. Zoey is by Frankly Majestic, a son of Too Bee Frank and grandson of Okie Leo. Thursday Thoughts from Kellie

Thursday Thoughts is going to be a little weak this week because I’ve been at the Benton Franklin Fair all week with Toni, Kade and Jaxsen.

Meanwhile, we left Mom, Dad, Ben, Kicker and Kaine at home to handle all the chores on top of their regular full-time jobs. I’m sure they’re thrilled with us. Anna also went back to the University of Idaho, which gets a big blah from me. Not the school, the fact that she is not at home.

Since today is Thursday, if you haven’t made it to the fair yet, you missed watching Kade show for the final time at Benton Franklin.

The good news is that you can still watch him show at CBJLS—for free—or at the Othello Fair. He is saving the steer he considers his best for Othello, so there is still more to come. He showed my favorite here.

You also missed watching Jaxsen show, but thankfully, you can catch him again next year.

You haven’t missed everything, though! Kade’s steer sells tomorrow. He is out of our cow Foxxy and by Trump Train, and we would love to see you at the sale. It starts tomorrow morning, so come support these hardworking kids and the livestock they have spent months raising.

Full disclosure: I wrote this before fair started—but I am SURE we had a great week. That is positive thinking…or tempting fate. We’ll find out.

Good luck to everyone competing at their county fairs this season, no matter what kind of animal you are showing. Fair week takes a tremendous amount of work, dedication and family support. Enjoy every minute of it—even the early mornings, late nights, dust, exhaustion and inevitable fair-food decisions you’ll regret later.

Thursday Thoughts from Kellie

Last Thursday, Kaine finished welding the gate panel for MC’s pen. Ben brought it down with the tractor, and we got it set in place. One more project officially crossed off the list!

On Friday, I hauled mineral out to the cows and horses and took advantage of the trip to get some new pictures. Toni showed horses on Saturday and managed to get even more pictures—because around here, getting good horse pictures is practically a full-time job.

We also tattooed the bulls on Saturday and moved them out of the weaning pen and into the bull pen. They’re growing, looking good, and ready for the next stage.

The Tomrens came out to look at the horses, and Toni took them around the ranch. The kids had an absolute blast!

Toni and Kade also moved Mocha and Bean up to the house. They were the last of the sold foals still out in Circle 5, so we’re making progress getting everyone where they needs to be

On Sunday, Kaine and Ben got Skip’s old pickup set up as the welding pickup. It may be an old pickup, but it has a new job—and on a ranch, that means it is officially back in business.

Jexy competed at the State Finals Games over the weekend and had a great showing! He placed fourth in both Keyhole and the California Stake Race and won two candles. We’re pretty proud of him!

Emma is borrowing Reina for the rodeo season, and she and her sister, Maddie, have been busy getting her legged up and ready to go.

And then there is Toni’s latest adventure…

Toni won a champagne filly in a raffle and we had already purchased another champagne filly. Our quest is now complete: every color of the rainbow is either already here or currently in transport!

Of course, plenty of time has also been spent playing with the puppies—which is not exactly a hardship. They are growing fast, full of personality, and looking for their own families.

I absolutely love this filly—she is easily one of my favorites from this year’s foal crop.
