Really what we need to schedule is some down time. Too bad we can’t fit it in!

Monday everyone was tired form the long hot weekend. Of course, it was still hot at home too, so that didn’t help with any anticipated recovery. The kids worked on their steers and heifers for the show on Saturday. Toni had a lot of voicemails on her machine from while she was gone, so she was busy working and catching up. Dad was harvesting wheat in Kahlotus. Ben’s pickup broke down 2 miles from his work, so his coworker Pete picked him up and then he fixed it after work. It may be on its last leg though. Ben probably needs a newer one. Circle 8 had a flat time on Monday, so the men took it off so Ben could take it in Tuesday to get fixed. A pole was broken on Dude’s pen, so Toni and I took it off after chores and went and got a new pole to put up. Luckily for us Kade and Jaxsen showed up in time to help, we should have grabbed a few more poles. Toni also started receiving sale catalogs so she keeps sending me horses that she wants to buy, like we need anymore. I tell her how many we have. She tells me how old they are, it is the circle of ranching. We also went out to the circle and got pictures of Sting for a guy that wanted him, took pictures of some others, and tried not to get mauled. We have a bunch of spoiled brat babies.

On Tuesday Ben took the circle tire in to get fixed. The kids worked on their animals. Sagebug came back to my house, so Anna and Kaydence went down, fixed fence, and checked. Super puncher  had hurt his leg pretty bad so they brought the herd back to the house, sorted, and got him and Shasta sorted out. Toni came down, saw the bad leg, went and got the white trailer and had the boys help her load. The tire on the white trailer shredded on her way to mom and dads with the horses. Mom helped her move Super Puncher and Shasta in with Blue and they left him alone. It is one of those injuries that is hard to tell what happened. It was too hot to change the tire, so the trailer got unhooked and left in the driveway as a constant reminder that it had a bad tire, but still made the trip. It was hot, so Toni and I did not put up any fence after chores, but we did grab mom and go out and check Gunner’s pen, and try to catch Bay Mare for Goodwins. They were way out there where they had found some green grass, so too far to lead in. Kade came down and worked on Stormy.

On Wednesday the kids got circle 4 in, there were a few sick calves, we need to preg check the sale heifers and one of the bulls had gotten back out and was in there. So they sorted them and then worked on their show animals. I think Kaydence might be getting worn out. After chores I told Toni it was still too hot to fence. So we moved water and talked to mom. Then I went home and packed some stuff out to the camper and noticed that a bottle of spaghetti sauce had spilled and no one told me. I was thrilled. Kade rode Stormy and Toni rode Gen bareback in the heat. Stormy is really coming along and Toni likes to ride with Kade so a win-win.

On Thursday Dad was off from harvest, so he took his pickup in to get serviced and Toni went and picked him up. Then him and mom ran Suzie, the dog, in to Othello to get clipped and then Toni ran him back into Connell to pickup his pickup. Dad found a good deal on water troughs at the Grange, so we have 2 new water troughs to pickup.  The kids clipped and got ready to go. Then Toni went down to watch them practice showing. The kids are all taking different steers to the next show, Jax hasn’t been working on his big steer for very long so we all wanted to make sure he could handle him. Ben got propane for the camper and shavings. We got it hooked up and ready to go.

Friday, I took the camper to work with me, and then Luis came over and picked it up after he unhooked his, and him and Toni parked it. Toni and the kids headed to the fair ground around noon. Traci and the medium kids went over late morning to get started on the beds. When I got there everything was set up and ready to go. And I found out we had a 110 outlet to plug the camper in to, so no AC, we hooked it up to the generator for a while and at least got it so it was not hotter then outside. But it was a long hot night.

Saturday we showed after sheep were done, so around noon. The show was good, Ady made it back to the championship round in market. Anna, Natalie and Julian were on standby. Kaine and Kade showed some other kids steers on the championship round. Ady was in the top 5. They started with Sr Showmanship, Kaine was Grand, Anna was reserve, Pepper was third, Kade was fourth and Aram was fifth. In Intermediates, Ady was grand, Chloe was reserve, Julian was third and Jaxsen was fourth. Jax’s steer decide he had enough of showing in the championship round and really started throwing his weight around. Jax did a good job with it.  Kaydence showed very well for her second show. In Jrs Natalee was grand and Savannah won novice and got her first buckle. For the round robin Natalee was grand champion in Jrs, Kaine was reserve champion senior, and Tesa (who showed a pig not a steer) was grand champion intermediate. For the heifer show Kade had grand champion overall heifer with Roxette, his fall heifer, Natalee was reserve champion with her heifer. Then we packed up and headed home. Ben had done chores for us, Toni went down and moved water and Ben and I got the camper backed in and set up. We had Lane with us all weekend, and he was a huge help. It was a good show but way too hot. We saw lots of friends and even with the heat, there was a good turnout for the jackpot.  We also got Coco and Shea up from California, so we were all super excited about that. We haven’t seen little Shea in months and now she is walking and talking. She still has bright red hair.  We were so busy on Saturday that Toni forgot to bid online at the Billings sale so she was pretty irritated when she realized that. She can’t figure out how to see what the horses she wanted sold for, so that is also irritating her. She hopes they sold high.

On Sunday most of us slept in to some extent. Ben was out killing weeds in the horse pen. The kids washed their steers and heifers. Toni did billing in the morning to try to catch up. Toni and I went out to get Gunner’s pen in since they were out of grass. Kade came out and helped us. Kaydence rested some more in the afternoon, Anna started cleaning out the trailer. Jaxsen was helping Coco with Shea. Toni and I hauled Gunner, Bay Mare and Bunny down to the house. We moved Lily with the other yearlings. Gunner got the pen with the shed in it since he is the oldest stud down there. King and Gunner aren’t too happy to be in the corral and done breeding, but it is time. We hauled Flint the Watusi bull home and Friday to mom and dads for Toni to ride with Kade and Stormy.

This week was the last jackpot show for the 2023 show season, next we are on the fairs starting the 4th week in August. Anna has her senior project this coming weekend, a show clinic. The next jackpot the kids will go to one in November, but we call that the beginning of the 2024 show season. Anna, McCall, Ben and maybe McKenna will go the Nile in October as well. Anna took her baby heifer that she is selling in the Evergreen Sale and she was a trooper. We are excited for a couple weeks off from showing before the fairs start, but looking at the schedule there is no down time. We have tons of activities to fill the rest of the summer up. Really what we need to schedule is some down time. Too bad we can’t fit it in!

To Be Roan or Not To Be, that is the question?

On Monday Anna, Kaine and I had dentist appointments, so Anna caught her steers and heifers and Kade and Toni caught Kaines for him. Kade also caught Jaxsen’s since Jaxsen at 12 can’t catch his own. Really unclear on that. We went and saw grandma after our appointments then the kids went home to work on their animals. Toni got the old horses in, Cad was the only one that did not get out, and fixed the fence. Toni, Jaxsen and I put up some poles. Kade rode Stormy Monday night.

Tuesday mom and Toni went to see grandma. Anna and Kade got circle 5 in and Anna and Kaine sorted out the bulls and a Hereford heifer that was limping. They also sorted out their bred and owned show heifers. Anna also got the old mares in and fixed the fence. I took Anna to a work dinner with me at Anthonys on Tuesday night, she was my DD. Toni and Jaxsen built fence after the horse chores while the boys went up and finished up working on their steers. Toni also worked on Glo and Fabby, two of the two-year-olds, while Kade rode Stormy and Gen.

Happy first day of summer.  Toni and I celebrated by building fence with Jaxsen. It was the highlight of his day. We also took some new pics of Joss and played with the yearling fillies. We love them all. We are keeping too many, but four of them are out of old mares. And they are all so special. We still have Monte in, but we aren’t really doctoring him now, just waiting and hoping he gets better. His leg is still an issue. The good news is that he is young. There is time. There were rumors that I was sick on Wednesday night, but I said I had allergy issues.

I was supposed to go to Spokane on Thursday for work and go on a tour of Grand Coulee, I was really looking forward to this, however, I was home sick and slept all day. From looking at the pictures it looks like Kade rode Gen in a halter and Stormy in her bosal. Toni and Jaxen put up a pole. It really was too much for Jax since the poles are heavy and he thinks it is stupid.  The kids also worked on their steers and heifers.  Kade is still catching Jax’s steers. The big huge steer named Loki (Jax has had like 4 steers named Loki), is probably the tamer of the two steers. He may already be 1300 lbs but he is pretty tame. We are hopeful that Jax will be able to lead the steer before we head to Jr. Nationals. I think we are all sure Jax is not going to work on his steers when we are gone.

On Friday Toni, dad and Anna went to Spokane. Dad and Anna went to the AQHA trainer Jennifer Ballard for Anna to do her AQHA Youth Development Foal program. They really liked Jennifer and Gunnie did great. Toni went to Allie’s and picked up Abs, who is bred to Silver Gun, and preg check Annie, who is open, so no foal by Shiner named Sioux.  Toni got to see “Cookie” the stud we are breeding Cinder and Cammie to and said how nice he is. On the way home they stopped and ate at Chaps which is one of Toni’s favorites and Dad really enjoyed his burger. Said it was one of the best he has had. Kaine chopped down Russian Olive trees after washing heifers and steers and Kade did some Angus Association paperwork after he was done washing. We also found some tadpoles on Friday where the sprinkler in the old mare pen had made a puddle. So we spent way too much time watching them. Marlo came out so she got to have fun with us watching tadpoles and discussing them.  We moved Crystal over with Tank so she can have a late foal again next year.  Toni and Kade went for a ride, Kade on Stormy and Toni on Gen, again in a halter.

On Saturday dad took the three older kids to Coulee City to get their heifers feet trimmed before we go to Jr Nationals. Toni and I went to a bridal shower for Kaycee Booth at Shannon’s house. We had a lot of fun, Grace did a great job planning it. In the afternoon Anna and I went to Cecil and Debbie’s house and picked up Benelli and Angel, they were there with two mini mares eating down the grass, the grass was getting short so we brought the big horses home. We put them down in circle 6 with Cad. I got a few new pics of Waffles the colt that is there. Then Toni, Jaxsen and I built some more fence. Kaine and Ben put out big bales of grass straw, thanks guys.

On Sunday Terry and Erina came out with Josie and JR to see the horses. We had a lot of fun “riding” the horses and catching and releasing tadpoles. Then we moved some panels and fence around and moved some horses around. I went out and checked Sagebug pen. The boys loaded some hay onto the flatbed trailer and bought it down to feed. Kids washed steers and heifers. Kolton and Scarlett were down so Kolton “helped” Jaxsen wash his steer and do his chores. Scarlett helped Anna, and Anna’s friend Brandy was out, so she helped her as well. They fixed the fence in the bull pen and moved the mini horses into the circle. Toni’s cat Harry took a ride in Kicker’s pu, then wouldn’t come to Kicker after he jumped out, so Toni had to run up and rescue her cat. And lastly on Sunday Chad came out and trimmed the three donkeys, Gunnie, Abs and Miss Gen.  We only had Chad for a small sliver of time, so had to prioritize what was getting done. Then Kade rode Stormy and Gen.

Silver BlackDuke is a buckskin roan, so that throws people off a bit when they look at him. Smokin is a funky color, but we haven’t color tested him. A couple of the black colts also have crème genes which makes them look not truly black. We are firm believers that a color doesn’t make a horse, but color can be fun. A good horse is a good horse, regardless of color.

And Summer Vacation has started

On Monday dad took Butte to Reardon and got more grain for the horses. When the grain was being unloaded the hydraulic hose broke on the tractor. Luckily all of the grain was unloaded first. Our little guy Monte got hurt, so we are doctoring him every night. He is really easy to work with, even though he isn’t very old, so it is an easy job. Kaine and Kade had football practice after school, dad picked them up. For some reason Kaine then took his shirt off to do chores, which prompted Kade to do the same thing. Teenage boys are interesting. Jaxsen went to Silverwood with his sixth grade class trip. He had a great time. He rode rides, spent money on a goofy hat, ate junky food and got to miss school. It may have been the best day of his life. Toni fixed fence in Kings pen and got it back up. Neighbor George came over and preg checked a couple of heifers and a cow we had sold. I went and saw grandma.

On Tuesday dad and Toni went to Otis Orchard and took Cammie and Cinder and brought Annie and Oak back. It was a quick, uneventful trip. We were all disappointed that Cammie was open, we had hopes that she was bred to Leroy before he passed away, but no such luck. The Goodbye Blues is a stud up at Allies that we have bought 2 breedings for to get these late mares bred, at least we hope! Then they took the Wilson into Othello to get the tie bar welded on. King’s pen was out again, the fence is not down and is hot. Damn those horses for not being afraid of flags. Dad brought the boys home from football practice. Kaine and Kade loaded up some hay on the flatbed trailer and hauled it down to mom and dads.

More football practice, chores and fence fixing on Wednesday. Wednesday afternoon we went to Dick Moore’s funeral in Kahlotus. The Moores have been long time family friends, before my lifetime ever began. Dick and his wife Melette used to play cards with Grandma and Grandpa and were two of our grandparents very best friends. Melette passed away about 6 months ago and now Dick. The service was very well attended. We were glad to be part of the celebration of Dick’s life. We saw lots of friends, ate a wonderful meal catered by Mike Corrales, and tried to support the family. Dad was not able to pick up the boys, we thought they were getting a ride home with their friend Kelten, but he was not at practice so they rode the bus. We were tracking them on our phone to see where they were on the way home, and it showed we were right behind them, but Kelten’s pickup was not in front of us. The bus stopped at mom and dads and guess what, two boys got off.  We then proceeded to do chores, get horses in, etc. The normal.

Happy Birthday mom. For mom’s birthday Toni and mom went to see grandma. Then they went to Red Lobster for coconut shrimp and the Euro bakery for cannoli. Toni also bought a cake for the birthday party on Sunday, a spartika cake with lots of layers and whip crème and goodness. Mom’s back had been hurting, but luckily it was a bit better for her birthday. We took her a couple of presents even though we weren’t celebrating until Sunday. Mom likes her presents, we all do.

Friday was the kids last day of school, except Kade who was going to go on the actual 2 hr last day to see his girlfriend. We all found that amusing. However, when you are not old enough to drive you have to do what you can. The kids had practice, fed steers, etc. Jaxsen came home with 12 awards that his class had voted on- things like most likely to be a lawyer, most likely to be a scientist, most likely to become a famous football player, best vocabulary, things like that. It was pretty amusing. He said one of the girls got more awards than he did. But not a competition or anything. Othello Welding called and our tie bar is in the Wilson, so pretty excited about that. We have been working on getting the tie bar for a while. It was more complicated that we expected to get it and get it installed, but Luft Trailer Sales in E-burg really helped, got it ordered and Shawn with Othello Welding is amazing and got it installed. Toni told Shawn to make sure the tie bar is tough and installed right and he took her seriously based upon the amount of welding and brackets that are up.

On Saturday Willy came and got the 4 heifers and the cow and calf. The kids got all their heifers and steers washed in the morning. Kade’s girlfriend Abby and Anna’s boyfriend Lane came out in the afternoon, so we spend the afternoon building fence since we had so many hands. We got a lot done. Then we did chores, Abby had not ridden a horse so Toni had her get on Gracie, then later her and Kade rode Slick. She got to feed hay, move water, etc. Lots of fun things.  But things that if you want to date a ranch kid, you had better get used to. Lane is a ranch kid, so he is used to our version of “fun.”  Mom wanted Libby, her pet cow (picture a 1700 lb black Angus beautiful cow) moved in with Dude so she had more shade from the hot sun.  I picked up a piece of baling twine, made a halter, and we led her out of the big pasture over to Dude’s pen. A baling twine halter on a fat cow that wants to graze as you walk isn’t a great way to move. Toni had to walk behind her and twist her tail quite a bit. Dude came over to see her but stopped about 15 feet away and ignored her after that. A big cow is not of much interest to a stud that is probably outweighed by a good 500 lbs.

On Sunday we had mom and Erina’s birthday party. Ben made bacon wrapped shrimp, roast, brisket and Dutch oven potatoes. Toni made rolls, salad a cheese tray and some infused vodka drink. I cooked a pie mom had made and was in the freezer. We all had a great time. After everyone left Anna, Kaine and I went for a ride. Anna rode her green broke horse Jag, who did great. Then we went down and did chores.

I went out and checked Gunner’s pen on Saturday morning. We try to get out there and check all of the pen’s, just to make sure everything is ok. What a view I had. We all joke about who owns which stud, whose stud is better, normal family banter.  Gunner is my stud. Gunner has the mares we knew were open, or the mares that were not crème based with the oldest foals. Gunner gets his mares and there are no mares coming in or going out, that is what he gets. So that pen has some Gunner foals, a Tank filly, a couple of Jackpot foals. It is impossible to pick a favorite.  What a fantastic group of foals. Then I went to the Sagebug pen. Same thing, wow. But they are not better than the Tank pen, or the King pen, or the Dude pen. These foals really look outstanding. You can go from pen to pen and just know that the quality across the board is outstanding. We have some weekends open before we head to Jr. Nationals if anyone wants to come out and take the tour to see these foals. It is worth the drive.
