Happy Spring Forward!!! Best day of the year.

No new foals Monday. Toni had people out looking at bulls and people out looking at horses. So she was out of the office most of the day showing the livestock off. Both sets of people have been here before and bought from us before so that always makes it easier. Kade and Jaxsen made it to regionals in Ag Sales and Ag commodities, so they were gone there. Toni and Abby (Toni’s Idaho Shagg) did most of the horse chores. I got there in time to help her feed the pasture and then we went and checked mares with mom. Kaine texted us that one of the Hereford cows calved, he actually just sent a pic, and 947. Kade and Jaxsen both were third individually in their competitions and their teams both were first, so they are off to the next level, which I think is State. Toni stayed with grandma Monday, she is still not sleeping.

On Tuesday Toni went about checking and went down to circle 3. Circle 3 got planted to alfalfa last year but has an amazing stand of volunteer wheat that we are thinking about baling as good cattle feed with first cutting. We just got done checking the desert when Kendel called to tell us we had a new foal in circle 5. Kendel told us the foal was bay and when we got down there, we could tell she was bay. It is always nice to be given good color information. Kendel didn’t tell us that the foal was huge and a filly, but we figured that out.  Shasta has a nice bay filly by Sagebug. No new calves, we are down to the last few cows to calve.

On Wednesday Ro foaled and had a fancy buckskin colt. It was Savannah’s birthday, so she named him Bolt. This is the second tine that Ro has foaled on Savannah’s birthday. Mean Jean (Savannah Jean) was also born on her birthday. Ro is very consistent. Toni bought a Shiner Named Sioux filly in Tx on Wednesday, she was a good deal and I have wanted one. We had a breeding to Shiner Named Sioux, but Annie did not take last year or the year before, so we are giving up on it. On the National News scene, Toni’s mentor and friend Karen Budd-Falen, an attorney and rancher from Wyoming accepted the associate deputy secretary position for the Interior Department. We are all excited to see what good Karen can do in that position for agriculture.

On Thursday Kaine was getting his Wisdom Teeth taken out, so him and I did that. Toni checked like normal. No new babies on Thursday. After Kaine and I got back and I got him all set up on the couch, I went out and tired to get pics of the bulls, but there was a cow in heat in a neighboring pen, so they all just wanted to stand at the gate and beller and ride each other. So did not get much. I went and got some pictures of the calves while I checked the cows. Then I did Kaine’s chores and fed barn hay. Then Toni and I fed the desert, and she finished our chores, while I went back and helped Ben feed the cows. Kaine was doing pretty well until the pain meds wore off then he was feeling the pain. He had an impacted tooth making it important to get those wisdom teeth out.

On Friday three horses showed up from Asotin that Toni said she would rehome. Kade rode the two geldings, the mare came off the trailer a little lame. Ike, the 17 hand 25 year old was great. Roanie the 20 year old red roan was Ok, and Honey the 18 year old mare was also ok.  They are all big. Kade and Toni both rode Ike the 25 year old and thought he was really cool. And he is super pretty. I went to stay with grandma and Toni and Marlo checked.  Marlo was excited to see Bolt. He is a really cute colt. And Anna made it home so Marlo got to go and see the puppies along with Anna. Anna is home for spring break so we are all happy to have her home.

On Saturday Electra foaled before dad and Kade went to trap. She had a cute red filly. Goldy also foaled on Saturday and had a fancy red dun filly. Toni hauled Ike over to Leslie for Julian to have. We tagged the two weeks worth of calves that we had neglected tagging due to AIing cows. Ben was fast on Saturday and got them all caught. We put out big bales, moved some horses around etc. We had some bull buyers out and they picked Anna’s bull Haul, the bull she showed in 2024. Saturday was a big sale day. Moses Lake was having a horse sale and Toni ended up buying Cousin Leslie a paint gelding that is really gentle. We were also trying to buy some Hereford heifers at a Hereford sale in OR. Toni had her phone going, the laptop, and an extra monitor. The heifers went a touch above what we wanted to spend but we have some other heifers to look at. Saturday afternoon we started putting old open mares out with studs. We like to see if the older open mares that are in decent shape will breed before the herd comes in. We got mares put out with Cappy, Tank, and Dude, and moved Jex and Spark. We decided to give them their spring ivomec and give a west nile shot so that we are getting ahead of our spring work. It was a good start. The studs all thought it was spring so acted like spring fever was upon them but they are all good boys so did fine. After moving everything around we did chores and checked. We are still trying to mess with Bolt every night along with the other foals.

Happy Spring Forward!!! Best day of the year. We are waiting for the day we no longer have to fall back and just remain forward. Toni and Kade got panels put out at their house and got Electra along with her little filly (Kade is working on names) turned out of the foaling pen. We decided to try to put big bales in all of the corral pens. That was entertaining. We put a tow strap around one bale and pulled it into the pen with a pickup. Another pen we could back in and pretty much got stuck in the mud and had to rock the pickup and trailer out of the mud. We moved Breezy and her colt Mighty back in with the old mares. Now the little guy has room to run around. He needed a bigger pen. Mom went with us to check so she got to see the four foals in the desert then we went and looked at the puppies. Anna was practice loading Rhoda so she can go to her new home next week. She is a pretty little mini but she likes to jump in the trailer. Then we went home to finish chores and finish off the weekend.

Foals are on the ground so 2024 foals have been moved to the for sale page if they are for sale. The 2025 foals are all on the website. Per the norm I am keeping the website as up to date as possible with new pictures and information that we have on the new foals. Currently the count is 2 colts and 4 fillies.
