There are so many things to say about KT Queenie Bellini that it is hard to know where to begin. She is out of one of our favorite mares and by one of our favorite stallions, so Mom and Toni were already arguing over who would get her from the start!

Her sire, Doll Docsan (“Leroy”), was a big, lovable marshmallow with a performance-packed pedigree. He was smooth to ride, quiet, trainable, and tremendously talented, with beautiful movement and a huge stop. He consistently passed those qualities along to his foals, producing good-looking, colorful horses with excellent conformation and willing minds.

Leroy was never shown because of a serious wire-cut injury that required a long recovery, but his offspring have proven the ability in his pedigree. He produced an NRHA money-earner, as well as a horse that successfully competed in Western Dressage, placing third in Canada in July 2016 and earning multiple first-place finishes.

Leroy was sired by Dolls Union Jac, an AQHA ROM and NRHA money-earner whose offspring have earned more than $310,000 in NRHA competition, along with earnings and accomplishments in NRCHA, the Buckskin Association, and at the AQHA World Show. Leroy’s dam, Docsan Jeany, also produced money-earners and AQHA point earners.

Bellini’s dam, KT Copper Queen Cleo, comes from one of our most treasured ranch-horse families. Cleo is by Docs Sizzle Bar and out of Copper Queen Robin, an outstanding all-around mare. Dad roped and worked cattle on Robin, Toni barrel raced her and showed her in 4-H, and she was not added to the broodmare band until she was in her twenties. She was truly one of our all-time favorite mares.

Cleo bowed a tendon as a weanling, but we were able to put some rides on her as a two-year-old. She has been a wonderful mare to have around and has consistently produced athletic, hard-working foals with plenty of cow. Her pedigree includes Docs Dee Bar, Sizzlin Hot, Gusdusted, and Ed Echols.

Bellini represents generations of horses our family has ridden, worked, trusted, and loved. With her striking black-pointed dun color, movement, cow sense, and dependable disposition, she carries forward the qualities that built our ranch-horse program.

Toni reminded me that we need to get the camper pulled into the yard and start packing it for the Benton-Franklin Fair. Fair is right around the corner, whether we are ready for it or not!

We have also started bringing mares and foals up to the house to prepare for weaning. This weekend, we will begin hauling mares out to winter pasture—another sure sign that summer is winding down and fall is sneaking up on us.

It has been a smoky week here in Washington. For everyone who has checked in or been worried about us, we are located in the middle of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project, so we are relatively safe from any major wildfires. We are fortunate to have a lot of irrigated ground and water surrounding us.

Unfortunately, many people near Kahlotus have not been as lucky. Dad, Kaine, and Kade finished wheat harvest there, but fires in the surrounding dryland country have burned wheat fields and pasture. Please keep the farmers, ranchers, and everyone else affected in your thoughts. Losing an entire crop or grazing ground is devastating

Our last outside mares have officially headed home, bringing another breeding season to a close. Thank you again to everyone who trusted our stallions and breeding program with their mares this year!

I traveled to Boise for the National Water Resources Association Summer Conference and had a great time. From there, I headed north to Grand Coulee Dam for another work meeting and a tour. It was a busy stretch, but both trips were well worth it.

While I was gone, Josslin came down to pick up Macy’s show heifer. I still haven’t heard what Macy named her, so we may have to stay tuned for that announcement!

Back at the ranch, Kade is working with my horse, KT Smokin Hottie (“Gucci”), again. Chad stopped by to put shoes on her, so she is ready to get back to work. Electra continues to heal well following her surgery, and Kade was able to take her for a short ride. Toni has also been riding Holly, who was featured in this week’s Ranch Horse Monday post.

Ben bought a new Longhorn from his cousin Andee, because apparently we needed one more mouth to feed and one more set of horns around here! Ben and I put the gates on the freestanding panels so we could finish that fence line. Afterward, I turned Sagebug out to stretch his legs and eat down some weeds before we turn the bulls into that area.

A few yearlings also left for their new homes this week. Yo Gun will be staying with us for a few more weeks because her new home is near Spokane, where the fire danger is currently a concern. We are happy to keep her here until it is safer for her to travel.

I finally took some updated pictures of the puppies. If anyone is looking for a cow-dog puppy, let me know—they are growing quickly and getting cuter by the day!

Anna is still working with the steers she has available, and they are coming along well. We managed to get a few new pictures of them, too. Kade and Jaxsen have also been busy working with their show steers as the Benton-Franklin Fair gets closer.

Kaine has the week off, but “off” clearly doesn’t mean much around here. He has been working on several welding projects for Toni and even got his welding truck running again before he heads back to work.

Between traveling, harvest, horses, cattle, puppies, fencing, welding, and watching the fire conditions, it has been another busy week. We are especially thankful for the water surrounding us.
