Thursday Thoughts

Sorry for the slightly lame Thursday Thoughts this week! I’m in Boise for a work conference, and Toni doesn’t slow down long enough to sit down and write an update.

Jaxsen is happy we have the new chore pickup. It has lots and lots of lights, which will be handy during those dark winter chores. I’m not sure that part thrills him, though! I’m sure he is hoping Kade will be back to helping with chores this winter.

We had lots of people come out to look at horses this past weekend and throughout the week. Toni has also been making plenty of trips to see Sheena for Coggins tests and health papers as horses prepare to head to their new homes.

We still have a great selection of foals available, so come out and claim yours! Kade plans to start Astra as soon as wheat harvest is over. If you’ve had your eye on her, now is the time to come take a look—her price will go up once training begins.

The Benton Franklin Fair is coming up toward the end of the month, and both Kade and Jaxsen have steers headed to the fair. This is Kade’s final year, so if you’ve been wanting to purchase one of his steers, time is running out!

Even from Boise, ranch life keeps rolling right along!

Feature Foal Wednesday -KT Sugar Shootin Kat

KT Sugar Shootin Kat
2026 Blue Roan Filly
Sire: Midnight Kat DR
Dam: KT Gun in a Million
Date Born: 4/15/2026
Color: Blue Roan—possibly homozygous black.
Price: $10,000

I absolutely love this filly—she is easily one of my favorites from this year’s foal crop. She has the color, shape, movement, and presence to catch your eye, but her pedigree is what really seals the deal. She is bred to have the athletic ability, cow sense, and versatility to excel in the arena, on the ranch, or eventually in a top-quality broodmare band.

KT Sugar Shootin Kat is sired by Midnight Kat DR, “MC,” a stallion loaded with proven performance genetics. MC is by Starlight Midnight, an NRHA money earner, AQHA World Show qualifier in Junior Heeling, earner of more than 60 AQHA points, and holder of his Register of Merit. Starlight Midnight is a son of the legendary Grays Starlight, whose offspring have earned more than $10 million across the NRHA, NRCHA, and NCHA.

MC’s dam, Slick As A Cat DR, is by Magneticat, a powerful red roan stallion known for his bone, size, stop, and cow sense. Magneticat is a son of Metallic Cat, one of the most influential cutting horse sires in the industry. This top side brings generations of proven cutting, reining, roping, and cow-horse ability.

Her dam, KT Gun in a Million, “Mil,” adds even more color, cow sense, and foundation breeding. Mil is by KT Gunpowder N Lead, a son of Cue Bars Laddie—an AQHA All-Around Trophy winner and CCHA Hall of Fame stallion known for his ability in reining, cow horse, and roping. This line also traces to great horses including Peppy San, Doc O’Lena, Docs Jack Frost, Dandy Derby, and Imperial One.

Mil is a smoky black mare with unique brindle characteristics and an outstanding maternal line. Her dam, Wright On Sugarnic, “Stinger,” won the Pro Division of the Cascade Cutters Futurity and is an own daughter of Lenas Wright On. The pedigree continues through Just Plain Sugari, an NCHA money earner and AQHA point earner, with Smart Little Mesa, Slide Me Again, and Just Plain Colonel farther back.

This filly brings together elite cutting, reining, cow-horse, and ranch genetics in one gorgeous blue roan package. She is athletic, balanced, and bred to be trainable and versatile. Whether your goal is the show pen, ranch work, roping, or a future broodmare with serious credentials, she has the pieces to go on.

Color, class, cow sense, and a pedigree to back it all up—KT Sugar Shootin Kat is the real deal. 💙

Ranch Horse Monday – KT Smokin Hottie, “Gucci”

KT Smokin Hottie, “Gucci”
2022 Palomino Mare
Sire: KT HotTimein Cowtown, “Tank”
Dam: Blue Eyed Reflection

We loved Gucci from the day she was born, and she has continued to live up to our expectations. This cross between Blue and Tank produced a dark, flashy palomino with plenty of chrome, athletic ability, and a performance-packed pedigree.

Gucci is now under saddle, and Kade has been riding her and tracking the roping dummy. She is coming along nicely and showing the ability, willingness, and versatility bred into her from both sides of her pedigree.

Her dam, Blue Eyed Reflection, is a daughter of Colonels Reflection, an AQHA point-earner and son of the legendary Colonel Freckles. Blue is out of Reba Lynx, a daughter of Docs Lynx with One Gun on the bottom side. Blue’s full brother earned his AQHA Register of Merit, while her sister became a barrel horse—proof of the versatility behind this mare.

Gucci’s sire, KT HotTimein Cowtown (“Tank”), is by KR Gun Powder and out of KT Cow Cuttin Hottie. KR Gun Powder, a son of Colonels Smoking Gun (“Gunner”), was the 2016 APHA Senior Reining World Champion and earned nearly $13,000 in NRHA competition from only nine shows.

Tank’s dam, KT Cow Cuttin Hottie, is by accomplished cow horse performer Cow Cuttin Colonel. His résumé includes NRCHA Superior Cow Horse honors, AQHA Open and Amateur Performance ROMs, multiple championships and reserve championships, and several NRCHA World Show finalist appearances.

Gucci combines proven reining, cow horse, ranch, and speed genetics in one eye-catching package. She was born with the looks and pedigree—and now she is proving she has the mind and ability to go with them.

We said this filly had a future full of purple when she was born. So far, we still believe it.

Sunday Filly Spotlight – KT Cowtown Gold Digger

KT Cowtown Gold Digger
2026 Palomino Filly
Sire: KT HotTimein Cowtown, “Tank”
Dam: KT Coys Doll
Date Born: 4/30/26
Price: $5,000
Also available as part of a three-way package.

KT Cowtown Gold Digger has been a standout from the beginning. She is pretty, balanced, and built with the shape, bone, and presence to make a versatile performance prospect. Add her gorgeous palomino color and proven pedigree, and this is a filly that is hard to overlook.

Her sire, KT HotTimein Cowtown (“Tank”), is a talented young stallion backed by elite reining and cow horse genetics. Tank is by KR Gun Powder, the 2016 APHA Senior Reining World Champion and an NRHA money-earner. His dam, KT Cow Cuttin Hottie, is a daughter of accomplished NRCHA performer Cow Cuttin Colonel. With influences including Colonels Smoking Gun (“Gunner”) and Cow Cuttin Colonel, Tank brings athletic ability, cow sense, and trainability to this cross.

Her dam, KT Coys Doll, is by Doll Docsan (“Leroy”) and out of KT EllyDoubleMelody (“Elly”). Elly has been a dependable trail and family horse, participating in clinics and safely carrying children—the kind of disposition everyone wants in a working horse.

Leroy adds another strong layer of performance and usability. Known for his smooth ride, big stop, trainability, and exceptional mind, he consistently sires attractive, well-built foals with plenty of brains. Leroy is by Dolls Union Jac, an ROM and NRHA money-earner whose offspring have earned more than $310,000 across NRHA, NRCHA, AQHA, and other competitions. Leroy’s offspring have successfully competed in both reining and western dressage, proving the versatility of this bloodline.

KT Coys Doll joined our broodmare band after suffering an eye injury as a foal, but she has all the quality, disposition, and pedigree we want in our program.

KT Cowtown Gold Digger has the pedigree, disposition, conformation, and color to excel as a reining, cow horse, ranch, or show prospect. She should mature into a dependable, versatile mare with plenty of performance ability and long-term broodmare value.

Saturday Colt Spotlight – KT Nells Knight Star

KT Nells Knight Star
2026 Buckskin Colt
Sire: Midnight Kat DR
Dam: KT Miss Benelli Girl, “Nellie”
Date Born: 4/24/26
Price: $6,000

That wide blaze and striking buckskin color may catch your attention first, but KT Nells Knight Star has plenty more to offer. He is balanced, stout-made, and already showing the hip, bone, presence, and personality we like to see in a young prospect.

He didn’t go unnoticed for long—cousin Patricia has already tried to call dibs. One look at him and it’s easy to understand why.

His sire, Midnight Kat DR (“MC”), is backed by elite cutting, reining, and cow horse bloodlines. MC is by Starlight Midnight, an NRHA money-earner, 2007 AQHA World Show qualifier in Junior Heeling, and earner of more than 60 AQHA points and his Register of Merit. Starlight Midnight is a son of the legendary Grays Starlight, whose offspring have earned more than $10 million.

MC’s dam, Slick As A Cat DR, is by Magneticat, a powerful red roan son of Metallic Cat known for his bone, size, athleticism, and cow sense. Her maternal line also carries Smooth As A Cat, adding even more proven cutting ability.

On the bottom side, this colt is out of KT Miss Benelli Girl (“Nellie”), a big, impressive buckskin mare we have always thought a lot of. Nellie’s dam, Pepper, is by Dry Spec A Pepper, the 1986 Eastern Idaho Quarter Horse Association Senior Cutting Champion and a grandson of Dry Doc—an NCHA Futurity Champion, AQHA Reserve World Champion in Cutting, Hall of Fame inductee, and earner of more than $85,000.

Nellie is also a granddaughter of Cue Bars Laddie, a versatile roan stallion shown in reining, cow horse, and roping competition. He earned an Open AQHA All-Around Trophy and was inducted into the CCHA Hall of Fame. Nellie is also a full sister to the dependable buckskin mare everyone rides—but Kade claims as his own.

Performance on top. Cow on the bottom. Brains, bone, and presence throughout.

KT Nells Knight Star has the pedigree and natural ability to excel as a cutting, cow horse, reining, ranch, or rope horse prospect—and the kind of mind that should make him a dependable partner.

Finally Friday!

I hope everyone has some great weekend plans!

Today, Toni, Erina, Anna, Mom, and I took a little break from ranch life and enjoyed facials followed by a late lunch. Now it’s back to ranch work!

We have more people coming out this weekend to look at horses and steers. We also sold all four show heifers this week and will be delivering three of them on Sunday. A big thank-you to our repeat buyers, Eddie and Gabby—we truly appreciate your continued support!

Anna is headed to Oregon on Saturday to put on a showing clinic for a 4-H group that invited her. We’re proud of her for sharing her knowledge and helping young exhibitors build their skills.

Hopefully Ben has the mower running again because this weekend brings Me vs. the Thistles: Round Two. Let’s hope the rocks stay out of it this time!

Have a great weekend everyone.

Thursday Thoughts

Another great week of July is gone, and somehow we’re already knocking on August’s door. Summer is flying by, and the foals, calves, and puppies are all getting big!

I tried mowing thistles on Saturday with the new mower. I made it about no time at all before mowing a rock and knocking a blade off. I found the blade, loaded everything up, and brought the tractor and mower back for Ben to fix. Not exactly the successful first outing I had pictured!

Toni hauled Blue Devil to John’s and brought Nutter and Butter home. We also had lots of people out looking at foals, yearlings, and two-year-olds over the weekend, with more sales pending!

Frappe headed to her new home, and we let her new family borrow Scooter for the rest of the year. Scooter is open, and their 4-H horse is lame, so it worked out well for everyone.

Jexy got to go to another playday and qualified for State in several events. Go, Jex

I also got pictures of Kade and Jaxsen with their CBJLS steers. Fair will be here before we know it!

The Canyon chore pickup finally died—and it has plenty wrong with it—so if anyone wants an old Canyon, let me know. In true ranch fashion, I replaced it with a 26-year-old S-10 from Musser Bros. Newer clearly wasn’t the goal.

The puppies are growing fast, too. Let me know if you’re looking for an Idaho Shag-cross puppy!

Toni and Jaxsen hauled Charlie, Abs, and Gina in to see Sheena and find out whether they are pregnant.

Dad, Kaine, and Kade are all still busy with wheat harvest, although they aren’t all working at the same place this year. Anna is also learning a lot and gaining some great experience through her summer internship.

Just another busy July week filled with horses, cattle, harvest, puppies, equipment trouble, and plenty of miles on the road.
