Kane and Yo Chic

Our second AQHA Youth got to pick up his foal over the weekend. His name is Kane and he is from Cottonwood, ID. He picked Yo Chic, and we are excited to see how things go over the next year. Kane got to chose between Mage and Yo Chic, both King foals. And Kane, I am apologizing in advance since I have already corrected it 5 times, I might misspell your name to like our Kaine.

Attention Youth!

Are you, or do you know of a young horseman, who would like to improve their hands-on horsemanship skills – and possibly get a scholarship to boot? The AQHA Ranching Heritage Young Horse Development Program offers AQHYA members exactly that chance, courtesy of the generosity of Ranching Heritage Breeders from around the country. Thanks to these breeders, the Young Horse Development Program is able to accept more applications for individuals interested in participating in the program. In addition to improving horsemanship skills and the possibility of a scholarship, selected individuals will receive a free weanling donated by an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder. The application deadline for this program has been extended to October 15.

Young Horse Development Program

AQHYA members can earn scholarships by raising a weanling from an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder; the deadline to apply, August 26, is approaching.

Do you know a young horseman looking to earn scholarships and bolster his or her résumé? If so, you need to tell them about the AQHA Ranching Heritage Young Horse Development Program.

This program gives American Quarter Horse Youth Association members the opportunity to participate in hands-on horse training that will teach the fundamentals of horsemanship. Then they will be able to showcase their learned skills and knowledge at designated events where they can earn scholarships and prizes.

For the project, accepted AQHYA members will receive a nominated weanling from an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder. Those who do not receive a donated foal can still purchase a weanling from a Ranching Heritage Breeder. The AQHYA members work with and train their foals, then show them at an AQHA show. Ultimately, the project participants have the chance to win back their investment in their foals through scholarships.

Several generous AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders have donated weanlings to this year’s program. To receive one of these donated foals, free of charge, AQHYA members must submit their application and waiver forms by August 26.

The Ranching Heritage Breeders who are donating weanlings this year will be announced soon.

“The Young Horse Development Program was developed to help youth gain hands-on experience in training horses,” said Craig Huffhines, AQHA executive vice president. “The program gives youth a mentor to learn from and showcase their hard work and dedication to their project. This will, in turn, give participants a skill set that will set them apart when applying for scholarships, college and jobs.”

The 2016-17 project participants are vying for $5,000 in scholarships and prizes.

• 1st place: $2,000 scholarship and a Montana Silversmiths belt buckle

• 2nd place: $1,500 scholarship and a pair of Justin boots

• 3rd place: $1,000 scholarship and a $100 Wrangler gift certificate

• 4th place: $500 scholarship and a $100 Wrangler gift certificate

Young Horse Development

The AQHA Ranching Heritage Young Horse Development Program showcases the stock being bred and raised by AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders, and provides an opportunity for youth to become engaged in the horse industry at a fundamental level that will be fun and educational.

AQHYA members are selected to receive a free weanling from generous Ranching Heritage Breeders. They then participate in the program, which requires monthly reports, record keeping, showing and education while competing for a chance at scholarships.

Alumni youth like Karli Knapp of Wardsboro, Vermont, are continuing on with the youngsters they received. Karli was chosen to receive weanling MRQH Dandy Hustles from Moreau River Quarter Horses in Mud Butte, South Dakota, and they were recently spotted competing at the Merial AQHA Region Six Championships. Read an update on alumni Sierra and Cheyenne Walter in the upcoming fall issue of the Ranch Horse Journal.

The 2016 deadline for youth to apply is August 26.
