Spring is here and that means one thing on the ranch…

Mud. Everywhere.

The horses are muddy, the dogs are muddy, the pickup is muddy, and if you step in the wrong spot your boots might stay there permanently. The only ones who seem to enjoy it are the cows, and Outlaw who is ALWAYS muddy.

But muddy mornings also mean green grass is coming, calves are thriving, and longer evenings are on the way. Hard to complain too much about that.

Sure, we lose an hour of sleep, but what we gain is evenings that actually last long enough to get something done. Suddenly there’s daylight after chores, after work, and after supper. It’s that time of year when you look at the clock, see the sun still up, and think, “Well… we might as well saddle one more.”

Around here, more daylight means more riding, more projects getting finished, and a lot more time spent outside instead of staring out the window wishing winter would hurry up and leave.

We wrapped up calving season, which always feels like a milestone. The calves are bouncing around the pasture and doing what calves do best—running, bucking, and generally acting like they’ve had way too much coffee.

Last weekend we AI’d the cows, which is always a ranch event in itself. It takes a crew, a lot of organization, and a sense of humor. If you’ve never spent a weekend artificially inseminating cattle, well… let’s just say it’s not a topic that usually comes up at dinner parties.

Now we’ve moved on to the ranch tradition of waiting on mares to foal, which is a whole different kind of patience. We check the mare… she looks normal. Then at some point she’ll foal during the exact 20 minutes nobody is watching.

But with longer evenings ahead, it’s hard to complain. Spring is creeping in, the horses are getting ridden more, and the ranch is starting to feel alive again.

Here’s to longer days, dusty boots, and just one more ride before dark. 🌾🐎

Spring on the ranch is always an adventure. We officially wrapped up calving, which feels like a big win. The calves are on the ground, everyone survived on coffee and stubbornness, and the cows are doing their jobs like they’re supposed to. That part of the season is always a little chaotic, so when the last calf hits the ground it feels like you can finally exhale.

Last weekend we AI’d the cows, which means the ranch spent a couple days playing matchmaker. There’s nothing quite like explaining to someone outside of agriculture what artificial insemination day looks like. Let’s just say it involves long days, a lot of organization, and conversations you definitely don’t have in an office job. The cows, of course, were less impressed with the whole situation than we were.

Now we’re in the next phase of ranch life: waiting on mares to foal. If you’ve ever waited on a mare, you know exactly how this goes. You check her… she looks normal. You check her again… still normal. And she stands there calmly eating hay like she has absolutely no plans of having a baby anytime soon.

Mares have a special talent for foaling the one time you finally fall asleep.

The horses are getting ridden, the calves are growing, and somewhere out there is a mare who is absolutely enjoying keeping us guessing.
