Meet KT Leroys Copper Bunny — barn name Copper — a dunalino filly by Leroy and out of one of our all-time favorites, Izzy. We’re calling this one “Ranch Horse Monday” with an asterisk: Copper took a devastating injury to her right rear leg as a foal, and honestly, we won’t know if she’ll make a ranch horse until she’s further along. We’ll keep you posted.
What we do know is her dam is about as good as they come. Izzy (KT Copper Isabelle) is our first fourth-generation mare, and she’s earned every bit of her spot in the broodmare band. We showed her before an injury of her own sidelined that career, then put her to work on the ranch for a few years, and now she’s raising foals that are just as smart, trainable, and well put-together as she is. She’s cowy enough to go after cattle and dogs alike, and she’s 83% NFQHA with a pedigree running through Sizzlin Hot, Major Bonanza, Ed Echols, Coys Bonanza, and Major King.
On the sire’s side, Leroy (Doll Docsan) brings the kind of résumé and disposition breeders dream about — a smooth ride, tremendous talent, beautiful movement, and a huge stop, all wrapped up in a quiet, trainable mind that he hands down to his foals. He’s a son of Dolls Union Jac, an NRHA Register of Merit horse whose offspring have earned more than $310,000 in NRHA, plus money in NRCHA, the Buckskin Association, and the AQHA world show. Leroy himself is double registered with NFQHA at 92%.
So Copper’s got the pedigree and the family history to be something special. What she needs now is time to heal and show us what she’s got — and given who her dam is, we’re not betting against her.
